[313] Jak security - the lowdown

2001-05-31 Thread Jim Bishop
I got into jak before doors opened because I was with a wheelchair friend.
The reason security took so long getting people in, and I know because we
waited to get in side also, they made us stand in almost a closet until
doors opened at 1. Security tore everyone apart on their so called pat
downs. Oh and if you were caught carying any ilicits management had set up a
separate cash register where you were charged a fine $6 for any drugs and
they kept them in a box. Security took forever because they were trying to
make some money.

Be glad they made some money instead of arrests. It's Detroit, and it's a
party by *professionals*. Leave the "illicits" at home.

[313] my DEMF highlights

2001-05-31 Thread jurren baars

well, where to start?

saturday:
- the guy on cruches (sp?),in front of the stage during dj B"len"D and TP's
set, having the time of his life, was a great way to start a memorable
weekend.
- UR party with Chaos live, and rolando mixing 'final frontier' and
'numbers' followed by 'computer world 2', and the two tracks after 'techno
drivers'.

sunday:
- watching IBEX play some realy groovy tunes, and this guy comes up to me
and asks who's playing, and i answer: "IBEX" so he asks: "is that his last
name?" "no, i think his real name is tony oliveira." and the guy reply's "my
god, i went to highschool with that guy!" and runs down to say hi!

- todd sines and titonton live.
- shake playing live for about 20 to 30 minutes. oh man, that should have
been 2 hours at least! he's THE BEST!!! that was a rock solid performance,
and by the look on his face he was having a great time.
- the trackmode/sound signature party @ detroit contemporary art. a lovely
venue, the place was packed when i got in at around 2 am. at 5 am i had to
get out, i was getting dizzy from dancing my a$$ off (both upstairs as
downstairs), and the heat. but what a party! didn't visit the corner where
theo was apparently selling some unreleased tracks, i hope nothing more then
SS012 & 013 'cuz i found those @ recordtime :)

monday:
- di'jital playing some sweet disco tracks at 45rpm
- innercity live
- all those classics juan played
- another night @ detroit contemporary art. rumour had it that basic channel
was going to do a live set, that didn't happen, but safety scissors live was
some funky s#!t, performing for about 20-30 people.

woke up on tuesday @ around 10 am, got a flight to amsterdam via london @
6.30 pm, didn't sleep on the plane, got home in utrecht round 4 pm on
wednesday, and am now working (it's 4 am), and my shift lasts till 7 am
(that's thursday), so don't be at all surprised if have forgotten certain
things.

hi to everyone i met, and maybe see you next time to everyone i missed.

Isn't that one of the most genuienely satisfying things about the festival?
That guy was groovin' out, and a guy in a wheelchair was bobbin' his head
furiously during Autechre. Also, cost is no barrier to the homeless or
unemployed citizens of Detroit. I loved it when an apparently homeless woman
plopped down her "garbage" bag and took over a circle from a bunch of
well-dressed white kids @ the CPOP stage. Nothing against those kids per se,
but somehow I think the opportunity to dance there may have meant a little
more to her and the guy that started gettin' down with her than them.
Lester's briliant commentary rings truer at these moments than any others.

[313] my demf thaughts

2001-05-31 Thread Scotto
I was really excited to get there on saturady. I wanted to catch TP but we
arrived a little late. tadd mullinx was brilliant imo he had the best sound
in the underground stage. kooky was my favorite on sat. autechre was good
but to crowded to enjoy. really liked d-wynn set. I wished the mc for bone
would of been a little less vocal (reminded me of mill on 3-1).
sunday arrived for acquaviva's set (after a quick optic nerve listen) I'm
really liking how he is using this new equipment of his. da la was alright
wished they played more. laurent blew me away on sunday his set was great.
kid keola was really cool. then went to jak (see previous post)
monday man was I dead tired we were kick out of our hotel at noon but we
sneaked back in for another hour. then we ate. (saw a oldham there little
surprised to see him so close to the demf) went downstairs for ollie (dont
know his last name ) good bangin techno. dj ditial was good. caught the tail
end of jim masters. . then random noise gen. was a high point for me on
monday. inner city man they had soul. jaun atkins wished he did not have the
problems there were but I enjoyed none the less but it was crowded. then the
hail and I split!!

a few thing that I really found annoying were all the extra sound tents and
they made it sound so crappy if you were not close to the stages. there was
also more obnoxious drunks this year but that come with popularity. and why
did people in gerneal have to be so pushy in crowded areas when it's wall to
wall people where are you going to go!

but my main bi**h is all the crappy extra sound tents get them out of there
next year!

I talked to AO for a minute, and he seemed to be in a good mood. Whatever
issues he had last year, it didn't seem to be on his mind Monday -- I think
he played out of town on the weekend ...

It was great fun playing Spot The Techno Legend. I didn't see him but
Jeff Mills was wandering around most of Saturday. Autechre were reportedly
roaming around Sunday. Eddie Fowlkes was bugging in the center of the main
stage circle for A Number of Names. Richie Hawtin was in the m-nus tent
quite a bit. And I saw a load of guys with VIP badges in full UR uniform,
but I don't know what any of the UR guys look like.

And the fact that Boo Williams was hanging out and doing the booty bump
warms my heart. He has played out here in Iowa City a couple times, and
he always hits a few gin & juices and finds a girl to dance with for the
rest of the night. The only other Chicago music heads I saw there were
the inimitable Maier brothers and they're full on techno freaks. You'd
think more Chicago cats would be down, especially since the festival seemed
to be suprisingly tilted towards house music...and DEMF was a better time
than anything that's happened in Chicago for years!

It was not even close to that simple. You had the two above, "Eyes Only",
with Dopplereffekt and Ultradyne, the Planet E party, "Treatment" with an
arseload of hard techno to long to fit on this list, Steve Crawford and TP
at the Lager Lounge, Acquaviva doing a 5 hour set @ Motor, a number of
others + the fear of not getting into where you wanted to be if you didn't
skip the closing sets @ DEMF.

[313] A MEANS TO AN END Chicago 6/15

2001-05-31 Thread Kent williams
Speaking of Chicago, please visit http://www.gramaphonerecords.com/
and check out their flash flyer for "A Means To an End." In short:

The Advent (Live)
Surgeon (DJ)
Regis (Live)

Opening Tag Team from Josh Werner, Dave Siska, Ken & Karl Meier,
and Mani Migliani.

It's at the Metro, arguably the best medium sized venue in Chicago,
and it's 21 & up, so you can get a cocktail and not trip over glostik
kids K'ed out on the floor.

I talked to Ken and Karl about this in Detroit, and it sounds like
for once it's a show by the heads and for the heads, so you should
NOT miss it and make it a big success. If at all possible I'll
be there, and I'm sure that Iowa City will be there to represent.

It's no secret that Chicago hasn't had a really good party in years,
so it's up to us to pack the joint to the rafters and make this one
a success. Promotion is like pinball -- the reward for winning is
getting to play again. If this one goes off it could be the start
of something really cool in Chicago.

By the way, we've had Ken and Karl out, and I've seen Dave Siska spin
as well, and they're all excellent. Ken and Karl truly banged it the
last time they were in Iowa City.

Has DEMF turned me into a Scene Cheerleader? HELL YEAH.

If they had the normal City Club security doing the door, I'm not
surprised. They're pretty rough people. Not bad people, but not used to
the crowds Richie drew at all. A good night in City Club it gets near
capacity - never seen them turn people away.

Still the only place I know of which has a *mandatory* cellphone check ($1
or they'll take it if they catch you). Great idea, really.

As to the DEMF for me - the Carl Craig banner damn near made me cry. That
was what made my entire weekend worthwhile. Forget the excellent sets from
Kooky Scientist, Autechre, Inner City, Maersk, and all the others whose
names I didn't even know - that banner, and the response it evoked, made
all the corporate sponsorship meaningless. What better way to prove
something false doesn't matter than to respond so strongly to something real?

Re: [313] my demf thaughts

2001-05-31 Thread Fred Heutte
I was pleased to have a nice chat with Simon Hartley (Wild Planet)
on Monday during the Inner City performance and found out he actually
lives in Leeds again after growing up in the UK, moving to Sweden for
six years, and now moving back. I really thought Simon's live set
at the 430 West party was outstanding and hope he'll play out more
often.

During the RNG set I ran into Abdul Haqq, longtime UR and Submerge
graphic artist who did the sublime ceiling painting at 2030 Grand River
(in effect, the Sistine Chapel of techno). He says he is working hard
on brand new stuff in the new Submerge building and has a special surprise
planned for the bathroom :)

My other spot-the-stars moment was at the KMS afterparty. Doc Martin,
who I've known for nearly a decade, came in with a record box and told
me, "Kevin said to show up but I don't know what to play..." So I told
him, "Hey, it's just a party, so play party music!" :)

I overlooked the most interesting part of my chat with Simon
Hartley. I had forgotten this, but there was an earlier version of
Wild Planet he did as a duo with Mark Bell from LFO in about 1992,
they even had a couple releases on Warp under that name. Before that,
as TUF (The Underground Force) they had some releases which he told me
they would send over as white labels to DJs at the Hacienda to play
during the peak of the Madchester era.

All this history reminds me that the incredibly fertile period from
1987 to 1992 should be a goldmine for ideas for future musical
development.

Yes. 2nd that. Function is hot. As is Surgeon. The English blokes seem to be
in New York a lot these days, so it's good to see them in Chicago too. The
Metro is defintely a fun place to see a show, where you have a nice choice

[313] 430 West Records

2001-05-31 Thread TurnTheTable
After reading post after post about Jak and the Planet-E party but did not
see anything about the 430 west after party the same night. My friends and I
tried to get in to Jak and the Planet-E party and after going through my
pokets looking for more cash I came across the 430 west flyer. Thinking this
party would be like the others and we wouldnt be able to get in we decided to
spend the $10 on a cab and drive over. As we walked around the building to
the enternace thinking we would have to wait the man at the door says $10 so
we pay and we walk right in. I was amazed to see only 30 people there as
Mike Huckalbe(sp?) was throwing down. I waited in aw to see who was going on
next, after Mike was Wild Planet who is one hell of a live P.A. As people
began to leave the music kept getting better as Lawrence Burden went on after
Wild Planet and threw down one of the hardest sets I have ever heard. After
that Terrence Parker and Dj Dijital threw down after that we left so I dont
know if anyone else spun that night? I was pissed that I didnt get in to JAK
but it was werth it as I have never seen Lawrence Burden spin before, his set
was one of the best I have heard all weekend. Hats off to 430 west for one
hell of a night!!!

Peace

i'm not from Detroit, and i certainly was not at
the Music Institute, but i heard a few tapes
from both May&Mills's earlier years on the WJLB radio
station

May
first of all,the thing about may is that he used to
play A LOT of his own stuff,in fact 70% on the couple
of tapes i have heard, was his own!
some chicago stuff too
Phuture - pump up the bass,Lil Lois - Freq,Rosario - I
want u,ten city etc
some disco
i can only clearly remember Harry Thuman -
Underwater,but he did play
some more "diva" type disco too,i just could not

German
Liason Dangerous -peut re pas(sp),avant apres
&(obviously) Gotching(sp)-e1e2
new wave
visage - freq7
in general i find May style to be very similer to Ron
Hardy!(good long "musical"mixing,with some crossfader
tricks in key)
i don't know that his radio apearences were consisted
of what he would play "out"
as he obviously would have wanted to "showcase" his
own stuff on radio.

Dillinja's latest entitled 'Cybotron'. It's not as if he is paying homage
to the group or anything. What if I was to call my latest "Reprazent"?

Interested on your thoughts..

[313] HCI and music software

2001-05-31 Thread Nick Walsh
Hi all,
I now have 4 weeks until the end of my course and I
have to do ANOTHER slightly lesser project. Luckily,
I'd planned out what I wanted to do ages ago... I want
to develop an interface for some kind of music
software.

I've got lots of very general resources for HCI (Human
Computer Interface) because I studied it a year or so
ago. However, I'm looking for something a little more
specific. Does anybody know where I can get
information about HCI and the impact of the user
interface on the usability etc of music software (or
hardware for that matter!!). Also, information the
psychology elements (obviously!) of music software
interfaces would be great.

The importance of the design of the interface of music
software doesn't seem to have been covered at all
Seems downright weird to me, maybe I shouldn't use
Yahoo Search:)

Thanks,
Nick:)

Ps. I hope everyone had a great time at the DEMF. It
sounded like it was an awesome experience, just like
the last time!!! I am so jealous of you all it makes
me feel sick!! What makes it worse is that Titonton's
set was great... and I missed it... not fair... :) Oh
well, keep reminding me how good it was, it gives me
motivation to try and get a big bucks job so I can
join you one day:)

Yes, because if you don't then the people who didn't find out about it
will whine and complain "damn, that richie hawtin sure has an ego."
because he keeps these little parties only to himself and his friends
and blah blah blah blah blah blah, and if he makes a party big enough
for everyone then somebody else complains how it was too big and there
were to many people and rich is a sell-out for trying to make too much
money by having a big party, and on and on and on and on ad nauseum.

maybe people should whine less.

luckily he throws parties for himself to enjoy, not for you, otherwise
nobody would ever be satisfied and they'd be whining all the time, and
then why bother throwing parties at all?

[313] Cybotron

2001-05-31 Thread Some Pagan
Somebody suggested that Cybotron was the home name of the Transformers and
thus Juan Atkins and Rick Davis would have no claim to it, well actually
considering it would be trademark and not copyright that wouldn't be the
case, furthermore the name was Cybertron, and the show or the cartoon didn't
come into existence until 1984, two years after Techno's beginnings. No, I
didn't remember all that, I took a few minutes to look it up on the web

Keith Tucker's computer "blew up", which could mean any
number of things. Is it just me, or is it him that's
sounding really frustrated on a microphone on the stream? I
know this wasn't broadcasted over the main speakers. At any
rate, A Number of Names played some P-Funk, etc. Two of the
players are in P-Funk. They eventually played a couple of
Number of Names songs, including a very long version of
Shari Vari. It was fun to see it live for sure, even if it
took a while to get there, and dissapointing that Keith
Tucker didn't get to play. They did a good job of improptu
recovery.

[313] More DJ obsessions

2001-05-31 Thread george . jones
Right before I really started listening to house and techno (1987-1988) I
remember getting frustrated with "The Wizard" a lot because he, as well as
a dj on 107.5, used to play 1 particular track that I simply couldn't stand
back then. Almost every one of my remaining Wizard tapes has it on there
and I would debate with myself whether or not to stop the recorder when it
came on.

It was Derrick May's "Nude Photo".

I didn't like it back then 'cause it reminded me of the presets from my old
Casio VL1 calculator/keyboard. It sounded corny as hell, but everyone
played it to death. I tolerate it more today than back then... It still
sounds corny.

Another track (and my #2 all time favorite) that damned near every Detroit
DJ played excessively was "Pacific 0101" by 808 State.

Frankie Knuckles' "The Whistle Song" was in every crate and at every party
around 1991.

I may remember others later in the day. I'm only on my first can of Whoop
Ass.

phuture jacks <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> on 05/31/2001 03:16:05 AM

ok i'll give it a shot
i'm not from Detroit, and i certainly was not at
the Music Institute, but i heard a few tapes
from both May&Mills's earlier years on the WJLB radio
station

May
first of all,the thing about may is that he used to
play A LOT of his own stuff,in fact 70% on the couple
of tapes i have heard, was his own!
some chicago stuff too
Phuture - pump up the bass,Lil Lois - Freq,Rosario - I
want u,ten city etc
some disco
i can only clearly remember Harry Thuman -
Underwater,but he did play
some more "diva" type disco too,i just could not
trainspot'em;)
German
Liason Dangerous -peut re pas(sp),avant apres
&(obviously) Gotching(sp)-e1e2
new wave
visage - freq7
in general i find May style to be very similer to Ron
Hardy!(good long "musical"mixing,with some crossfader
tricks in key)
i don't know that his radio apearences were consisted
of what he would play "out"
as he obviously would have wanted to "showcase" his
own stuff on radio.

No Ufo,Future,the Sound,body to the box,(mm i don't

Somebody suggested that Cybotron was the home name of the Transformers and
thus Juan Atkins and Rick Davis would have no claim to it, well actually
considering it would be trademark and not copyright that wouldn't be the
case, furthermore the name was Cybertron, and the show or the cartoon
didn't

come into existence until 1984, two years after Techno's beginnings. No, I
didn't remember all that, I took a few minutes to look it up on the web
(very slow day at work).

see now THAT was funny.

when you read older articles from rich he talks about how at first he played
from DAT, and then speedy j actually converted him over to the
you-can-actually-play-it-live philosophy.

From how excited he sounded about doing live material over playing records,

i'm surprised he went back (although i do understand how de9 is kinda both).

In general, most ideas come from somewhere, and are bouncing around in more
than person's head and stuff. It doesn't matter where any of these guys got
(or think they got) the name from, right?

So dillinja uses Cybotron or Cybertron or whatever

fyi, dillinja has been using the cybotron name since at least 1997, when
"silver blade" was released on grooverider's "prototype years" compilation.

so i'd call this a rather timely display of outrage.

Believe it or not, the Transformers toys came out in the 70's. I remember
seeing them advertised (though not called "Transformers") in some of my old
Avengers and Thor comics. The copyright date on Starscream leg shows 197x
(can't remember the exact date - I think it was '78). The comic book came
out just after the cartoon. I was a rather avid comic book collector back

I'm sure that there's info to back this up out on the net. I'm just too

[313] son of DEMF reviews.

2001-05-31 Thread ana dane

bringing up the rear on the demf review front:

quite a weekend. it was a mix of good music and a pretty depressing,
drugged-out, 15-year-old raver crowd. i guess i anticipated that more of
the people would be there because they wanted to hear the specific
artists...unfortunately i got the feeling that if it were a giant trance
music festival, 90% of the crowd would still be there.

but all cynicism aside, the highlights were finding suburban knight's "art
of stalking" minutes after walking into record time on friday, the 7th
city party on saturday night, the planet e one on sunday, and inner city
on monday. being such a misanthrope i felt like the afterparties were
better than alot of the festival itself- less overwhelming, fewer guys
with hemp necklaces and glowsticks screaming "WO! YEAH!!", and nice
dark and dry rooms. dancing amongst 313-ers at kdj's live set at the
planet e party was one of the nicest music moments i have experienced in a
long long time. what WAS that last track he played?

other than the music, seeing detroit for the first time was incredible. it
was so strangely beautiful...it's been kind of depressing to come back
to normal life here in new york, but looking down at all the scratches on
my knees from crawling under the fence to walk around in the old train
station brings something back. this past weekend was the kind that is
instantly burned into the "fond memories" section of my brain...i can't
think of any other way to describe it.

to those i met and re-met: rob, dan sicko, teep, macqueen, james duncan
and jooner, technotourists en massee- hans, otto, and wibo, titonton,
minto and j, and a whole slew of other 313ers... it was wonderful to
see all of you.

and hey if anyone got the number of that hot furry tiger man with the
orange lampshade on his head please send it to me pronto.

P.S.

DEMF: Nice to see all the 313'ers last weekend and even a few travelers
still hanging around last night at the Lager House. A very good group of
individuals on this list, unlike most of what I saw at DEMF. Is it me, or
did it seem that besides the old-school crowd and newbies that in the techno
crowd it is en vogue & accepted to be an apparently mindless party droid,
throwing trash, getting smacked out, stuffing your face with vapo-rub,
ringie-pops and corn dogs, sporting a gold chain on an unemployed
pre-pubescent drug-infused body, mucking up the electro community with a pop
culture club sludge mentality - or something like that? Hmm, rather
depressing. That's why we need to change the surface with whatever means we
have - Come out this weekend and keep the wheels turning. :) BYOB

Mike Grant is a vetern...seeing as by defination a vetern is someone who has
been in the service for a year or longer. he did a 4 year (i think it was

The Transformers were from the planet CyBERtron.

Cybotron's "Enter" came out in 1982.

The Transformers debuted in the US in 1984 (I still have the original US

that made my DEMF experience wonderful, I thank you. It was amazing being up

[313] question on sampling

2001-05-31 Thread Rusty Blasco
Question: What are the legal rules guarding the practice of sampling? Is it
at all based on the length of the sample used? I'm just curious, for I have
a good idea for my first techno track (though its realization will
undoubtedly take place somewhere far in the future), and the piece's
essential characteristic is a certain soundbite from a certain celebrity.
Thanks in advance for your insight.

The whole sample length thing is an urban myth. If you sample a song
and they notice, they can sue you.

A soundbite might be different, though.

2001-05-31 Thread sb
I just have to say that the Planet E party was the highlight of my weekend
and the best party/music I have danced to in years and possibly ever in one
evening...

Mike's set was brilliant!! Classics, and more... Truly a treat... Then the
treat of KDJ live... I've had "You freaky mother f*ucker... that's what
you are to me..." Stuck in my head sice Monday Then a smooth and
powerful set from Laurent (I was pissed though that he stole my French Kiss
to Love to Love You Baby mix ;-P )... Then a really great live set from
Nick Calingaert (Common Factor).. He rocked it real well.. One of the
smoothest live's I've ever seen... Then the man who made it all happen C2
playing some real nice jazzy stuff to bring the party to a close with "The
Climax" ... It was a great night and thanx to all the Planet E people for
putting it together.. Happy Aniversary!! Nice to see Rob again after a few
years, and nice to meet Mr. Sicko in person... I'm still smiling just
thinking about it...

[313] chicago events list

2001-05-31 Thread matt hellige
this is mostly for the chicago people on the list, or people close enough
to care about things happening in chicago. i know this is the 313 list
and not the 312 list and blah blah blah, but in light of the recent discussion
regarding "a means to an end", i figure maybe there are enough interested
people to make this posting worth it...

lately, i've been frustrated by the lack of any kind of web page listing
techno-house-whatever-related events in and around chicago. so i put one
together myself. without going into a long justification or explanation
about what it is or what it's for or how i'm going to operate it (there's
some of that on the page itself, for those interested), if you have an
interest in such a thing, please check it out.

the url is: http://immute.net/list

i'll add those things that i hear about and care about, but submissions
are welcome and appreciated. there's an easy form to fill out... also
please send me any other feedback, positive or negative...

These days you can get sued for sampling just about anything. Music is
totally copyright, no matter how much you take. James Brown has a staff
scouring for samples of his work, and he's made much more from being sampled
than he did from his own releases (or so I hear).
Speech is less likely to get you in trouble but not necessarily free to
sample. Certain recordings are copyright. Anything on TV, film, CD,
basically anything that has been published. I remember ORB got in trouble
for using the interview in "Little Fluffy Clouds".some country singer I
think. There is a pretty in depth article in the archives of Sound on Sound
magazine http://www.sospubs.co.uk you need to do a search as there's no
exact url within the site.

Well, the majority of the samples from him are drums, which aren't
subject to the same rules- they're generally free for the taking.
