[313] Mekka tour 2002?

2001-08-06 Thread M Elliot-Knight
Ok so Mekka looks like it is completely dead in the water for this year. I
just read that the Minneapolis part of the tour (that was rerouted from
Chicago) has been postponed until 2002. So there *is* time to get good acts
on the bill now.

[313] My house party last Friday

2001-08-06 Thread T . J . Johnson
HI I just wanted to send out a public thanks to some very talented listmembers
who showed up to spin at my party last Friday night.

Dennis Donohue, Mike Kim, and Barry (Kao Jyan) all showed up and threw down
some excellent sets of detroit and other styles of minimal techno. We also
busted out a tag team session for a few hours.

Any venue owners, promoters, or booking agents should take this as a formal
recommendation to have any of these guys perform or check them out when they do.

Thanks!

Re: [313] How was the 2030 party?

2001-08-06 Thread diana potts

Wow, it only took you half a day to come back with a
witty, negative retort.

What I said wasn't elitist, it was an observation
based on the fact that -every- time I have been to
2030 I have had a conversation with -at least- one
person who I haven't met before asking me about music,
or social issues or even (very flattering) how they
can begin writing for a publication or how I got into
writing and (based on my experiences) pointers on how
they can start. Some of these people or younger than
me, and some are older. On Saturday I atleast had four
or five conversations like this. If I was "elitist" I
wouldn't have these conversations, especially since I
was working at the same time.

We're all still learning Jayson,I'm assuming that is
why alot of people are on this list and others.(insert
what Otto said below). So perhaps you should stop
being so critical of every thing said (it's gotten old
btw) and pull up a desk too and start enjoying the
opportunity to be a teacher and a student.

and the -next- time you want to throw labels on me, do
it in private and don't waste the public space.
apologies to the list.

A good party should accommodate everyone, regardless of where they are

RE: [313] Harold McKinney&Detroit Jazz Resources?

2001-08-06 Thread Rob Theakston
there are two books allegedly in progress (as of 6 months ago) on the
history of detroit jazz (which is an insane amount believe it or not) there
was also one printed back a while ago (you can find it at the EMU
library...the author escapes me)i think it's called "the detroit jazz
almanac"try doing a web search for Kim Heron...as he's written several
articles on the history of detroit jazz, and is considered by many to be a
very integral part to keeping the detroit jazz flame alive and well.

the most thorough place i've found is
http://hypatia.ipl.org/exhibit/detjazz/, oh yeah and of course
www.semja.org is a good place to find out what's happening recently.

and the most interesting way i've found to hear history is just to find
record shops in detroit, clubs where jazz is still spoken and listening to
jazz musicians talk about their experiences.

Are you being sarcastic? :-) I suppose all the girlies love it (apart from the

It's just the kind of track that would go down a treat at Discoteque Royales in

Re: [313] Harold McKinney&Detroit Jazz Resources?

2001-08-06 Thread Jonny McIntosh
Rob beat me to the link but there is tons of Detroit jazzsters, and it
seemed to be an important area. At times there was quite a community vibe
going on, from what I can tell. The Detroit jazz scene of the early 60s, for
example, seems SO tight knit: the Jones brothers, Donald Byrd, Joe
Henderson, Kenny Burrell etc. When an artist was from Detroit it really
seemed more important to them than Chicago did, say, to a Chicago artist. Or
so it seems to me. On the back of "Mode For Joe" for example, Joe
Henderson's just saying, "He's a Detroit cat" like some badge of pride.
Which is cool. Also there's all the Tribe stuff which is proto-UR/Submerge
in it's DiY ethos.

Check out the IPL link Rob sent because that's a great site.

Jonny.

[313] Darren Price?

2001-08-06 Thread M Elliot-Knight
Whatever happened to this guy? His last release, I think, was his "Under the
Flightpath" LP/CD on NovaMute. I know he did some Underworld remixes but I'm
interested in any other solo work (non-remixes) he's done. I revisited the
above mentioned LP and found it to be highly influenced by classic Detroit
techno. So what's he doing? Painting houses or sumthin'?

Re: [313] Darren Price?

2001-08-06 Thread M Elliot-Knight
I saw some releases (on SG's website) by him under the name Transits of Tone
(w/Jon Litchfield and Mark Burrows) on the Intelligence label. One of
Transits' tunes ended up on the Dave Clarke Electro Boogie compilation. I
don't have that particular release but I'll take a wild guess and say that
it is probably electro? ;)
Other than that anyone else heard anything by Transits of Tone or have
anything on the Intelligence label?
Sonic Groove have a JBO '99 release by Price, G. Lindop and E. Chiverton
under the guise of Centuras. SG described the record as a "deep trippy
techno and acid trance project". So, not exactly what I'm looking for from
him. As far as JBO, I can't seem to find a working website.

HI I just wanted to send out a public thanks to some very talented
listmembers who showed up to spin at my party last Friday night.

Dennis Donohue, Mike Kim, and Barry (Kao Jyan) all showed up and threw down
some excellent sets of detroit and other styles of minimal techno. We also
busted out a tag team session for a few hours.

Any venue owners, promoters, or booking agents should take this as a formal
recommendation to have any of these guys perform or check them out when
they do.

Thanks!
