Re: [313] Is Prince the root of all Techno?

2001-08-24 Thread M Elliot-Knight
Well, I didn't write the below statement but I know that the Clash worked
with Lee Perry and if you listen to Stiff Little Fingers you'd have to say
they were most certainly influenced by reggae. But then I'm talking about UK
punk bands because US punk was a throw back to blues and rockabilly. Before
the hardcore punk came along that is.

Do you have any evidence of this? Can you support this claim? Are you Iggy
Pop? The only influence Dub and Reggae may have had on punk is the message
they tried to get across. Ska was directly influenced by the rhythms and
sounds of Dub and Reggae as is apparent in the music, however Ska-punk

[313] Dub

2001-08-24 Thread Michael Gano
Regarding the dub request & Blood & Fire

Blood & Fire's houses some great roots dub...I'd recommend the albums off
B&F:
-Yabby You's Tribute to King Tubby
-X-Ray Music: A Dub Directory
-Dubwise and Otherwise

and then for a great mix of old and new check out:
-Select Cuts from Blood & Fire - Actually put out by Echo Beach, it has a
lot of contempories (Smith & Mighty, Alex Patterson, Stereo MC's, Groove
Corporation...) remixing the rootsmen (King Tubby, Yabby You, Tappa Zukie,
Horace Andy, I Roy...)

All the way from Detroit, Brendan M. Gillen AKA Ectomorph, is coming to
Seattle for his first appearence on the west coast. Brendan's Seattle
performance will mark the debut event for the new collective Edos
Productions. Edos is the focused efforts of Jerry Abstract, Chana Goodman
and Kuri Kondrak, to provide a North West conduit for Detroit music and
dedicated techno variations.

The event will be on Fri, Aug 31st, at The Aristocrats, located in Seattle's
Pioneer Square on the corner of 4th and Main. Spinning with Ectomorph will
be Detroit's Jerry Abstract, and Kuri Kondrak, music editor of Resonance
magazine. Doors will open at 9:30 and the show will run till 4:00am.

Some info about Brendan for those who may be unfamiliar:

Gillen has engineered electro's second coming with a three-pronged attack of
producing, distributing, and the creation of his own label.
Brendan's productions under the guise of Ectomorph and Flexitone have
enacted some of the most focused, compelling electro mandates to date.
Gillen's Star67 distribution company has also quitely been helping to push
the genre's anonymous labels from the deepest sound recesses into the light.
Since 1995, his own record imprint,Interdimensional Transmissions, has

incarnations of Ectomorph (from the skeletal thump and fuzz of "Subsonic

revealed a hitherto unknown connecton from electro to post-punk/new wave

been to link the past with the future, the finished with the unfinished, the
ass with the mind. Expect to be inspired.

directions from ambassador bridge:
take a hard right turn after getting strip searched at customs ;) and you
will head north on huron church (towards the river beside the bridge), turn
right on university, turn left on pelissier and you'll be right in front of
amsterdam (on the left hand side)
- i do suggest taking the bridge as the tunnel can get fairly congested on
the weekends.

[313] diego 2x12

2001-08-24 Thread Zachary Lubin
I highly recommend the new album by diego entitled
"The Persuation Channel" (Kanzleramt, 2x12").
I feel it is the best relase of the year and will
probably not be topped. It is a wonderfully intense,
eclectic and variegated album, integrating Detroit
fundamentals with gorgeous melodic chords and fast,
brilliant percussion which Diego hammers out like no
other. There is simply nothing like it. Diego's
releases have all been incredible. This new album, for
me, is a quintessential offering of a future direction
in electronic music innovation...a real inspirational
piece. Check it out. And make sure you preview it with
good headphones or over creditable speakers for full
effect.
If anyone finds this album inspirational, also check
out these other offerings of his on kanzleramt:

diego:mouth full of fresh cut flowers (2x12)
diego + voco derman:roster
diego:the persuation channel (single 12" version)

[313] Technotourists representin' in Windsor

2001-08-24 Thread Greg Earle
The West Coast division of the Technotourists is headed to Detroit/Windsor
tonight. (I get in tomorrow morning at 9:23, sorry I'll miss the Amsterdam
Lounge get-together.  Going West -> East is a b*tch.)

I'll be in Windsor from (roughly) 10:30 AM tomorrow until about 9 PM Sunday
night. Hope to see my homies at Lifefest (and praying it doesn't rain/hail
all day). To the usual suspects: e-mail me privately for my cell #.

*w00t* It's good to be coming back to Detroit.

Speaking of which ... the Kit Clayton/Jasper show last night was a lot of
fun. Lots of DEMF reminiscing with listmember viagratek and his brother,
and their friend Kathy who's an ex-Detroiter and friend of BMG's. (She's
trying to convince Adult. to come out to play in LA in November, which will
bestow instant God-like status upon her.) Jasper played a total Detroit
set, running the gamut from Dan Bell to Derrick May to 69 to one of Kit's
own tracks to Maurizio to a New Order Flashback Weekend ("Blue Monday",
"Perfect Kiss" and "Confusion"). Perfect warm-up for Lifefest :-)

- Greg

P.S. I am the root of all Techno.

less enthusiastic support than artists receive in other countries? I don't

Latest issue of XLR8R has Stacey on the cover, and a hard-hitting interview
wherein he bemoans the lack of support artists of his calibre/ilk generally
receive in the US domestic music market. Home truths or sour grapes? You be
the judge.

There's also a gently-outspoken Larry Heard interview that's just been
published, either in this issue or the new URB one--can't quite recall.
Talks about dropping Jeff Lorber's "Rain Dance" as the opening/backing track

to some of the weekend tv news broadcasts he supplies the music for at his
daytime job. Always was a subliminal kind of guy...

Nah, I spoke to him about that at length the other day. I've probably spent
more time talking to Stacey than any other Detroit artist over the years (he
got his first press here, plus he's a fave of mine, so I will happily do 6
am interviews with the time difference) and he isn't ever bitter. It's not
in his character, he is a very positive kinda guy. He was really
disappointed that his album wasn't released in the US. It's a symbolic
thing, to be accepted by your own. 'Home' means a lot to Stacey too, he
always talks of it. I think it is 'home truths'. It's a shame that with the
attention the DEMF attracted the album wasn't released Stateside. Funnily
enough here in Australia his album got more of a push than Photek - both
Science/Virgin releases.

I will look forward to the XLR8R, it's nice that he made the cover.

RE: [313] dub

2001-08-24 Thread Grammenos, Peter

There's a great article in last months SOMA ( san fran mag ) about dub and
it's influences on electronic music with a recommended discography. All good
selections.

For newer stuff you should check out Guidance "Hi-Fidelity Dub Sessions" and
Burnt Friedman and the new Dub Players "Just Landed". The latter is an
amazing take at using older dub production styles (lots of echo , reverb )
but with new sounds.

Also, if your in nyc, check out SattaSundays @ Swin every other sunday for
DJ Kush and his live soundsystem dub. It's not often you get to see a dj
spinning without headphones ;) He also owns a record shop on east 3rd called
Jammyland that has anything and everything dub.

Latest issue of XLR8R has Stacey on the cover, and a hard-hitting interview
wherein he bemoans the lack of support artists of his calibre/ilk generally
receive in the US domestic music market. Home truths or sour grapes? You be

Re: [313] Is Prince the root of all Techno?

2001-08-24 Thread Mike Taylor
Actually, it really depends on what particular era and region of punk music
you are talking about.

Punk(60's garage rock) does not have a reggae or ska influence at all. You
look at anything on Nuggets, or the Stooges, Rationals and MC5 records, and
blues and 50's rock in stamped all over those records. The Ramones, and New
York Dolls, annd Velvet Underground dont skank. Most of the New York records
do not reference reggae. Nothing that came out of Ohio(Pere Ubu, Rocket From
Tombs, Electric Eels, early Devo) has that stamp on it. The West Coast does
not have it either(Germs, Black Flag, early X, Fear) Real American punk in
the 70's does not have a strong reggae influence. Of course nobody gives a
shit about American punk because Epic Records couldnt sell it with the mug
of a turncoat pub rocker like Joe "101'ers" Strummer.

Of course English Punk has a Reggae influence(particularly in London.) It is
just a result of having such a large West Indian population. I mean working
class affection for Blue Beat/Ska goes back to the Hard Mod/Skinhead days of
the mid to late 1960. I am not going to go into a rant about the old Blue
Beat tours, but I will tell you that Don Letts did not introduce reggae to
the UK(despite what PBS might tell you.) Ska in the late 60's was about as
common in the UK in the 60's as Master P was in Detroit in the late 90's.
Not everybody was tuned into peace and love, if you were a docker's son you
listened to Tamala and Ska.

[313] MANCHESTER UR GIG CANCELLED

2001-08-24 Thread Alice Smith

Hi y'all

First up, sorry for hogging the bandwidth. I wanted to be able to reach as
many concerned parties as possible.

I wanted to let you know that the proposed UR gig at the Music Box in
Manchester will not be going ahead. I know some of you were planning on
attending, and I wouldn't want you making the trip in vain. I work at ePM,
the company who acted as booking agents for this proposed event, and as
such, I'd just like to clear up a few details.

Basically, the promoter of the event has not been forthcoming with necessary
payments, and until the beginning of this week, the agent had not received a
signed contract for the booking.
The cut-off date for payment of the deposit was the 13th of this month -
money needed to be wired to relevant parties for payment of travel expenses.
This date came and went, and the promoter became extremely difficult to
contact. On Monday of this week, the promoter was reminded that until the
deposit was paid and the contracts were signed, this booking was not
confirmed. The booking agency then had to wire money from it's own account
to cover expenses - there is more than one UR gig this weekend and it's
unreasonable to go back to confirmed bookings and ask for more money. After
a further unproductive conversation with the promoter, it was decided to
cancel the gig. The agent had lost complete confidence in the promoter, and
considering the profile of the act(s) in question, trust is a very important
thing.

Today, the promoter made a last ditch attempt to strike a deal with the
booking agent, but still, no money has changed hands. It is my conclusion at
this point, that the promoter is going to advertise the gig right up until
the doors open, despite the fact that this booking has not been made
official. It would more likely than not be explained by either an unreliable
act, or an unreasonable booking agent, in the hope that punters will still
pay the cash to enter the club.

I WOULD LIKE TO MAKE IT CLEAR THAT THERE WILL BE NO U.R. PRESENCE AT
TONIGHT'S EVENT AT THE MUSIC BOX IN MANCHESTER. HOWEVER, THE APPEARANCE AT
'FLUX' IN LONDON TOMORROW NIGHT IS 100% CONFIRMED.

Apologies for the disappointment

I would like to emphasize that this cancellation does not reflect on
Underground Resistance in any way. I hope that has been made clear in this
statement.

I'm the somebody:

hopefully the encoding for this doesn't get messed up. If it does, i'll
re-edit it.

and not really feeling argumentative, if you don't agree that's fine with
me:

http://www.bobmarley.com/life/musicalinfluences/punkyreggae/

Well, Bob was influenced by punk at least.

and the show the brought the connection to light for me on pbs:

"The Ramones, Patti Smith, Talking Heads and Blondie light a fuse in America
that explodes in London with the cynical inner-city punk spirit of the Sex
Pistols and The Clash. Sharing a sense of alienation and rebellion, they
champion the Bob Marley-led reggae movement. " -
http://www.pbs.org/cgi-registry/whatson/template.cgir?s=WVIZ&t=2&p=1490&c=d&;
d=2001-08-13

"Punk explores two late `70s musical innovations that shaped rock and roll
through the next decade: punk and reggae. In New York, members of Blondie,
Talking Heads, Television, and the Ramones tell how they inadvertently
created the cynical, urban, stripped-down sound that became punk rock. In
London, punk takes off with the Sex Pistols, and members of the Wailers and
the Clash recall how Jamaican reggae, another musical form of rebellion,
crossed international boundaries, deeply influencing punk and pop rock. "
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/rocknroll/rnrtv.html

"By combining a punk attitude with the rhythms of reggae - a musical import
from Jamaica popularized by Bob Marley - bands like the Police, the
Pretenders and Elvis Costello and the Attractions created a hybrid that
proved both infectious and commercially acceptable in a way that hardcore
punk was not."
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/rocknroll/rnrpunk.html

"The Sex Pistols had broken up the previous year and the Clash were
considered the standard bearers of Punk. The concerts were the scathing
attacks of fury that had earned the group its reputation as a high energy
concert draw. The band returned to the UK after the tour to begin writing
for their new album to be produced by Guy Stevens who had produced the
Clash's demos for Polygram in 1977. So much material had been recorded that
the album was set to be a double. ("Time is Tight" a Booker T cover the band
had been playing since 1977 was recorded for the LP but was not included).
The title song was released in advance of the album (the album's working
title was the New Testament) with the flip side "Armagideon Time". That song
hadbeen a reggae hit for Jamaican singer Wille Williams in 1978, but the
Clash's version was so far superior to the original it has since become to
be associated with the band as their song. "
http://members.aol.com/secretsun3/history.html

Roxane by the police came out in 1978, well before the 1988 date you cite.
Then there's always "regatta de blanc" in 1979, "walking on the moon."

I guess it really does all come down to one's definition of punk after
allbut I think there is enough evidence of cross-polination.

and no, I am not iggy pop.

Do you have any evidence of this? Can you support this claim? Are you Iggy
Pop? The only influence Dub and Reggae may have had on punk is the message
they tried to get across. Ska was directly influenced by the rhythms and
sounds of Dub and Reggae as is apparent in the music, however Ska-punk cross
pollination really didn't happen until about '88 when Operation Ivy hit the
scene. Unless you consider The Specials and The English Beat 'punk', I'd

well, before Jamaicans started making their own music (before there was
"reggae" and "dub" as genres) they used to just cover R&B from the states,
meaning they played covers of tracks on labels like Stax, King, Chess,
Atlantic, and especially Motownjust had to bring it all back again full
 circle, haha

I think what a lot of Europeans don't realise is how little Reggae and Dub
permeated America at all. Apart from a little Wailers, Jimmy Cliff and
latterly Yellowman and Beenieman there wasn't the same invasion as happened
over here.

That said, if you want to you can trace the whole lineage of rapping to
Jamaican DJ's and toasters, Especially U-Roy...

A little word about our guests

Christian Bloch is part of the very elite in Denmark when it comes to
hard, minimal but very soulfull techno. He comes from the northern part
of Denmark, and his DJ-sets are legendary in the history of techno in
the city of Aalborg. Bloch has also made a major impact in the legendary
Tresor in Berlin, and is playing this years Roskilde Festival alongside
the likes of Super Collider, Plaid and Slam. Bloch has released on the
newly started Deep Night Essentials, a sub label of the acclaimed
Background records, Pacou's LL Records, as well as releases on his own
label Funque Droppings and has been remixed by the like's of Pacou,
Damon Wild and Sean Deason.

Ryan Brogan has been shrouded in anonymity in live performance and dj
sets under aliases like Agora One, Dropcode, Chosen, and Shadowpusher.
His music has a futuristic vision and a philosophy deeper than the
dance. A sense of culture and forward-thinking ideas about the potential
of communication through art and information are what define techno for
Ryan.

Here a couple links if you wanna know what forwardMusic and the parties
are like...
