[313] Pure D Vinyl - Detroit

2002-09-05 Thread Pryor, Ryan N
I've been meaning to stop by and check this place out and was wondering if
any fellow Detroiters
that have been there, could give me an idea (offlist, please) of what to
expect. i.e. labels, size of inventory,
your overall impression.

 Thanks,

North London will be reverberating to the sound of Drexciya tonight as those
records get played in tribute - forget I-F shutting down his sites, electro
just lost its most original mind and it's an unspeakable tragedy... my

another chic/chicago classic combination is tyree's 'i fear the night' on dj

amazing 808 workout with just some vocals over the top. i take it the vocals
come for chic, is that right?

When I hear words that keep us believing
That the world is changing
That it changes as we speak,
I BELIEVE The future WILL NOT BE bleak

We will have an impact on the future
The rebirth of time and space
We are not aesthetically bankrupt,
There is a single human race

Beauty in the cites,
Flexible inside,
Soft and colorful,
A RAPTUROUS place to hide

I want to love all the time,
Love everyone in our biosphere
Keep the thought powerful
Without shedding a tear

Sensual romantic world,
a physical and digital rebirth,
elevating our collective pleasure
One church, one mirth

One global paradise we will see

[313] [OT] carl craig + GAP = not a match

2002-09-05 Thread James Hurlbut
There seems to be some cross breeding of posts going on. I originally
posted about the CC show coming up in SF (which was fantastic, lots of cool
jazzy broken beaty stuff with some stompers thrown in and finishing the
night with Mama Loleatta belting 'Hit and Run', no alternative Shep
Pettibone/mystery mix, just the original). I mentioned in the post that DJ
Spooky appeared at a party by the same promoters and spoke out against the
massive inequality on this planet, and then a week later I saw DJ SPOOKY on
a gap billboard, not Carl Craig. As to why that is ironic, here's a link to
info about GAP sweatshops and how they further the widening gap between the
rich and poor:
http://www.globalexchange.org/economy/corporations/gap/overview.html

Recloose is coming to SF in a few weeks. I don't have the date on me right

Amoeba records and check the date on the poster there by the entrance.

RE: [313] turntables etc

2002-09-05 Thread Langsman, Marc

as far as I remember when you adjust the pot to change the pitch range, the
center 0 spot can become misaligned with the quartz locked 0 switch in the
center of the fader. This can cause a crazy region and effectively 2 0's in
the range. To correct this the other pot has to be fiddled with to align
both the 0's. I'd imagine using a scope is probably the best bet !
*good luck*

Ive not really heard that much dreciya stuff as its only until quite
recently that Ive got into electro. I feel this is probably as good as time
as ever to dive in and check some tunes out - can any recommend their top
dreciya tunes ?
I guess this would also make quite a nice tribute...

cheers,

speechless...condolences all around...

there is no one who has been a bigger inspiration to me or who
has connected
with me so much through music...i didnt know james but
drexciya has given me
s many great and deep moments, shivers down spine or
spazzing out or
warm gooey feelings listening to the music, even the
storytelling/mythology
was so unique and hopeful and fun...there is extraordinary
substance to so
much drexciya stuffi am really thankful and sad right
now...sending lots
of love out to James' spirit.

very sad...

Re: [313] A great tragedy and loss......... (fwd)

2002-09-05 Thread stewart
For me 'Lardossen Funk' is the tune I always drop, though as an album I've
always really liked Neptune's Lair despite many people feeling indifferent
towards it.

As for the sad newswhat can be said? It would be tragic under any
circumstances, but he seemed to really be musically on a roll recently and on
something of a mission to re-launch the Drexciya name with releases on Clone,
Tresor and I know he had many other projects planned with smaller labels. I
really hope this music will still materialise as a fitting musical tribute.

People should read the interview John Ossalaer did with James recently at

2002-09-05 Thread ::P
sure I could send them out on soulseek and no one would know that it was me,
except I got email asking me not to. Im a man of my word and for that
reason, I wont send them out.

I didnt receive the tracks from a party, I got them from a friend, so when I
initially said that I might send them out once I received permission, I
didnt see that as being a stretch. I drew this conclusion using logic
similar to yours. I figured if they werent being charged for, then giving
them out to 313 (a list of techno heads :) wouldnt be a big deal. however,
I dont like making enemies of producers I admire so I thought I would get
permission first.

I got the opposite.

so, Im sorry. hate me if you must, but at least understand where Im coming
from.

[313] id me control (was: plastikman tracks)

2002-09-05 Thread scotto
ok enough drama.

I really would like to know that tracks I asked about in my_orignal_post.

it was around 9:30 am

it sounded classic rockish with the bass line really reminding me of a
classic blues song redid by a late 60's early 70's artist. (really fustrated
I can not remember the name of the artist/song)
this track had the bassline from this song and it had some guitar in it to.
it was way dope.

then it was the plastikman plane sounds.

then it went in to what sounded like to me, to be, a new plastikman track
(but not one he handed out, I have the mini cd). it sounded very sheet one
in influence.

I'm really what to know what the classic rock sounding track was, my
curiousity is boiling over.

scotto
lansing, mi.

wording... perhaps :)

Im an audio mutilator and computer nerd so perhaps articulation isnt my
strongpoint :)

track1: deep 4/4 808ish bassdrum and multiple 303 sequences. pretty
minimal and the end of the track is washed out into ambience only to mix
into the second track which starts out with a drum-simulated heartbeat.
chill stuff.

Tristan Watkins wrote on Wed, 4 Sep 2002 about following:

150 bpm, play longer sets and build your set, and buy enough records
to
build the set from 117bpm to 150bpm. that's the right way.

It's definitely not the best way to do it, but I can't say I'd never do
it
again. I really like to play those Theo Parrish records and they don't
get
played out much unless I have +/-16 (or 15 if you rather). Of course, my
solution should just be to get the Vestax, no?

mmm i dunno. i just usually think that tracks are done for some tempo
for some reason. and i like to keep the tracks as they were intended to
be. of course you need to always pitch up/down while playing but +16 is
way overkill. if playin house i try to keep in between -2 - +4, with
techno i can go up'n'down more but for example at +8 the bass goes
awful. kinda weak. and think about vocals of house-tracks at +16.
usually ruins the track totally.. kills the vibe totally because they
start sounding like how gabber-heads used vocals - pitched too up.

Guess I'm the maverick pitch shifter... ;) There are definitely tracks
(especially vocal) that shouldn't be abusively pitched, but I sometimes like
the extra freedom to go to +/-12 (more than that usually sounds funny to my
ears). I also have a tendency to go all over the musical map in my sets, and
I have this rule of thumb that if it can be mixed, you may as well do it. I
have no hang-ups about changing pitch with non-beat matching mid-set, but I
really don't like to do it a lot and I get off on doing mixes most people
won't do b/c of pitch issues. It makes for a unique mix.

So anyway, I haven't had my tables pitched in at least a year and haven't
mixed on pitched tables in that long either. Last night I was opening for a
hip hop band , Goodiepal and Kevin Blechdom in Iowa City and the tables were
(lo and behold) pitched! The scratch DJ for the hip hop wanted the extra
range. I can't say I was all that thrilled, especially with a bag full of
about 1/2 broken beat records. It's *really* hard to mix dense broken beat
records on pitched tables, and possibly due to the lingering effects of this
thread I was hesitant to be too pitch-abusive, so... I spent most of the set
in or near the deadspot and it was really hard! Somehow it worked (at least
60 minutes into the recording I'm listening to now). I'll try and get it
encoded so you guys can hear a zany set at +/-16 without too much
gabber-esque abuse. Unfortunately one of the tables was playing in mono all
night (Kent told me this and I forgot to correct it on the next mix) so I'll
have to encode it in mono. :( Mixing with one monitor can be lame.

As an aside, I find most of the crowds I play for don't know 80% of the
records I'm playing, so you sorta need ask yourself how much you should
respect the original 'pitch intention'. If people aren't any the wiser, and
it sounds good, why not do it? I know it sounds really weird to me when I
play my own productions at weird pitches, but I'm not going to go as far as
to say that it's disrespectful or abusive to pitch records drastically (plus
or minus). Some techno sounds really good at -12...

Re: [313] Dissonanze Electronic music and digital art festival

2002-09-05 Thread Aaron Reed

mmm I'm a big fan of Swayzak. They are fairly hard to describe. I got a
chance to talk with them when they did a DJ set at the Groocetech studios
over instant messenger and was told they really hate being put into the
tech house category. So...I'd say they are tech house, house, minimal
breakbeat, technoahh hell. Just plain good music. I preferred their
first album Snowboarding In Argentina to their second Himawari. Somebody
help me out on this. I'm sure someone has a good sentence to sum them up.

The evenings are free and held in a large venue. People playing will be

There days are full of acts and film viewings - to get all the facts etc you

kim rapatti's mood ep has always been my favorite. there's some
agreeable j.tejada stuff (as mr.hazeltine), an interesting 2x12
sampler, an ep of minimal bass groovers by smyglyssna a neodetroit
album by mannequin lung in the first half of their catalog. plug
research had an advanced aesthetic since early on is one of the paths
that led to Microhouse. i don't know anything about their newer stuff.
asked about their inspirations the labelmakers once said something like:
for a long time it was robert hood, now we've finally gotten around to
carl craig.

James Marcel Stinson died the 3rd of September from a heart complication.

The project Drexciya lost one of its masterminds,
the (electronic) music world one of the most innovative musicians
and especially one of the greatest persons.

His wife and children are suffering more from this tragic loss.

He would have wanted it that his fans are informed.
Please treat his memory with the same respect you would with any friend.
Requests for more infos or photos will be ignored by this office.

 We will miss him greatly.

[313] Fw: base news/statement

Subject: base news/statement

Dear all, following numerous calls, e-mails and letters (including about 50
people coming up during a recent set at The End by Mr. Masters) asking what
is happening with BASE and when we are starting up on Thursdays again. we
felt it was time to let everybody know what was happening.

Obviously the speed at which we found out that we were approaching our last
night at Velvet surprised us all but the speed someone was to take
advantage of the situation surprised us even further.

The techno scene in London has always worked on a system of collaboration,
trust and working together until now.

Within six days of our closing, whilst we were away on a weeks break
thinking about which direction to move the club, plans had been announced
for a new thursday night techno club in London involving some people that
had helped to promote and had played at the club.

Despite the fact that on our website and all our publicity regarding the
last night we stated we were looking for a new venue (thanks to everybody
who contacted us offering their venues or suggestions) a certain Mr.
Mitchell thought different and presumed that leaving a message on our
infomation line (which is just that, an info line that nobody checks for
messages) was sufficient to find out exactly what we were doing and just
took it that we were finishing for good.

This is not the way things have normally been done in London and we along
with a lot of other people were quite shocked when people we considered our
friends went along with this course of action to take advantage of the
Thursday night crowd we had built up over the last six years (nine years if
you include The Drum Club), and even were booking the same guest dj's who
had been playing at the club!
The saying 'kicked in the teeth' has some meaning here.

However we don't feel that the scene in London is big enough to support two
clubs on a Thursday and it is not in our nature to be combative or
vindictive. so we will not be re-opening BASE for the moment, as this would
only be in opposition and would possibly split and weaken the scene which is
the last thing it needs at the moment and is opposite to our ideals which
has been always to support and help the scene.

The new night has absolutely nothing to do with us.

We will continue with our nights in Barcelona and Portugal and as well as
doing one off parties in London at both the End and other venues.

Also we will be starting Internet broadcasts on Thursdays for those of you
who are not from the London area.

We'll keep you updated with everything over the next few weeks

Thank you for your time

BASE

RE: [313] A great tragedy and loss......... (fwd)

2002-09-05 Thread Chana Goodman

As some of you may know I dont write a lot on 313, mostly I just listen.
Today however is different, I am not so concerned about cluttering up the
list or saying something that has already been said. Not enough could ever
be said about Drexciya. This duo has done so much for me and so many
others, teaching us all about the depths and possibilities of music. They
were pioneers and very brave men who knew there were others out there, like
them, simply listening, with out fear.

Indeed, it is a sad day, but also a day of careful consideration. Slowly
but surely great men and women pass away as they always have and always
will. Our job is to remember, and to carry on with the strength and bravery
they alloted us, we were their students. With all my heart and mind I will
move forth in my near future, trying my damndest to muster every bit of
innovation and inspiration that was passed down to me. I will use it and
create with it and that is a vow.

My condolences to all who knew and loved James Stinton. Please know that his
work and efforts have certainly not ended.
