(313) London XPress

2002-09-23 Thread Tristan Watkins
As discussed Saturday, some people couldn't find a way to get advanced tkts
for C2 this Saturday (and it's by no-means evident), the site is
http://www.wayahead.com/ - make sure to search for 'London Xpress' spelled
exactly this way. After their additional fees and postage, the total =
£10.70

Hey, this was a great party. i'm pretty sure ken and toby will have to move
to a bigger venue in the future. As nice as public life is, i think Slices
will be attracting a lot of attention as there is still a shortage of good
music in London away from big club nights that have the cash to fly bigger
names in.
i had a really great time: good music and people, so if you missed it, you
missed out :)
Reading Ken's run through of the music, i'm really sorry i missed your set
toby!

and by the way, i remember distinctly asking one of you 313 peeps what you
thought the chance of mills playing a house set at the End was, as he was on
the bill with tech-house Mr C. I was scoffed at so didnt'
go.wanna kick myself now...and Tristan wipe that
smile of your face!

(313) Fw: Dedbeat 3: Blackalicious join the party

DEDBEAT 3
8th, 9th & 10th, November 2002
Pontin's Holiday Village
Hemsby
Norfolk
http://www.dedbeat.net

The low-down on Dedbeat 2:
"A monster success" - The Face
"A note to all you other festival organisers - forget the big bucks, just
sort the tunes out, and the people will follow" - Sleazenation
"If you want a party and not just an event, Dedbeat shows exactly how it
should be done" - DJ

Appearing as part of an already eye popping line up at dedbeat 3 will be.

BLACKALICIOUS
(Gift of Gab, Chief Xcel, Lateef The Truth Speaker & on vocals Omega and
Damu)

As part of L.A.'s Bay Area SoleSides crew, Blackalicious have made their
mark alongside the likes of the West Coast's finest new hip hop DJs and
producers and further alongside Jazzbo, DJ Shadow and Lyrics Born helped to
make the entity known as Quannum. The full, no holds-barred line up from
Blackalicious will be playing faves from their 'NIA' album as well as a
taste of things to come.

Other dedbeat news bits.

The Dedbeat Chat Room is now up.Pop in and boast sophisticated verbal
dexterity. http://www.dedbeat.net

If you want to get a seat on the return London coach but didn't book along
with your ticket you can do so via www.wayahead.com
. These can now be issued independently.

Tickets are dwindling away quickly!! Remember the last two Dedbeats sold out
in advance! Dedbeat 3 will also be the first time ever you will be able to
'Witness The Pitness' as the foul-mouthed miner Pitman will be giving it out
proper. 'One spade, one coal.' An underground legend in the making!

And finally it is very unlikely that there will be a Dedbeat in spring as
they are currently planning something for the Summer abroad. Dedbeat HQ feel
that doing too many events over a shortened period will dilute the quality
and variety of what they aim to deliver. So all we can say is, make the most
of the Dedbeat quality music engine this November!

For full line up and event details see www.dedbeat.net

RE: (313) The Exchange?

2002-09-23 Thread Odeluga, Ken
Of course we've all seen Nils Hess' name alongside the name of that
plant on records. Does mostly tech house mastering it seems. The music's not
my bag but it does sound, crisp, clear and bassy. I believe his real name is
Nilesh Patel.

The Exchange is in Randolph Street in London NW1. I used them for two releases
and they certainly did the business. They encourage you to attend mastering
sessions and everyone there knows there stuff. I had a good laugh with the
engineer when I was there (which isn't actually something I'd neccesarily
reccomend seeing as you are paying for all the time you spend chatting :) and,
whilst I'm not totally savvy on the technical details, they used some machine
in the EQing process that is the only one of its type in the UK. All I know is
that it used air pressure cylinders to adjust its settings which is not done
anymore. This didn't really mean anything to me, but if anyone else knows what
they were on about please enlarge as it at least sounded quite impressive.

What else is impressive is the huge cutting machine, plus they cut both 12s on
copper and only charged me for laquer.

The cut sounded wicked, but they are expensive and about £20-30 quid an hour
more pricey than the next cheapest studio I looked at. Basically if money is
not an object I'd definatly them.

The Exchange
42 Bruges Place
Camden Town
London NW1 0TL
T: +44 (0)20 7485 0530

For pure dancefloor stuff, they're second to none IMO. I've had The
Moderator - 'Interstate 5' (Keynote 007, out most likely in Nov.) mastered
and cut there. They're not cheap by any standard, but what they did to the
main track blew me away, almost literally: it sounded absolutely massive,
like a wall of sound coming out of the speakers. That's the sort of thing
that can lift a track from being very good to great, so (hopefully) it's
money well spent.

Otto
PS If the beats are less important in the track compared to the melodies in
the mid and high, you might consider asking them to compress it not as much
as they would normally do, otherwise you risk getting a slightly muffled sound.

(313) First Impressions of Jimmie Wilson, Blaktroniks and Prymer

2002-09-23 Thread Tristan Watkins
Just got Second Life feat. Jimmie Wilson - Inner Love (Give It Up) - Running
Back 001

Three mixes of the same track. The original on the A-side is a bit too
full-on with the vocal for my taste, but the flip sides, particularly the
Black Keys Rework settles it all down a bit. Nice deep house with a
melancholy Detroit-ish mood.

Also got the first two Blaktroniks EPs and the CD. The first EP contains a
couple of tracks from and is kinda similar to the album. The second has the
Mike Grant and Domu remixes. Of these, Mike Grant's is the one for me. It's
very, well 'Mike Grant', for lack of a better comparison. Really beautiful.
The Domu remix is nice, but I couldn't see myself playing it for a
dancefloor. I suppose that's true of most of this material except the Mike
Grant remix, but it *is* nice for listening. About to pop the CD in for the
first time and then gives these all a thorough second listening.

For the Seiji fans, I also found myself in possession of the first Gutbucket
record, Prymer's 'Tell Them Not Me', which includes a moody Seiji remix,
more towards the drum 'n bass side of things, but it rolls along really
nicely with some bad-ass bass work.

Alas no!!

Rob Euroh had to use a customized mixer and so it was decided that it would
be the only mixer installed on the night ... alas it didn't have enough outs
for a recording device!!

By the way, I dumbly forgot (HOW THE F COULD I?!?!) Emile Facey/Plant43's
live set! Sorry Emile!

Emile got more sounds out of a 505 in half an hour than I thought was
possible - all to pumping, fluttering, electro break beats, and not a single
slip - despite what he says! He's only trying to get out of playing live at
another SLICES, but we'll work on him!

About their new EP I don't know if it's out yet.

But if you're looking for some informations about them you can check

I've made this interview with them back in 1996 so it's a bit dated
considering their future projects.

I'm glad they finally get the exposure they deserve throught Keith Tucker

i like this also; i think the art really describes the music - which is
pretty psychedelic - artwork isn't the only good thing on this one - i
really like the music too.

yeah i figured this out from allmusic afterwards - there was info on
both original 12" and remix 12" on fresh fruit. at the time when it was
big nobody ever mentioned that the hit version was remix. funny.

Pretty much the Entire Djax catalogue - Alan Oldham's artwork was just made to
go on 12s!

Also the Shiver 12s look cool. I'd like to see more graf on techno records

I have to agree, it is nice to see a record that is somehow visually
personalised, though I guess it is a compromise between that and achieving a
strong sense of the labels branding. Most labels tend to stick to a standard
design, but because of that you are going to possibly recognise and respond
that much quicker upon seeing it in a store. Then again really creative labels
like Djax, Delsin and certianly UR have managed to create a strong sense of
branding and style, whilst allowing individual releases to be visually
expressive and independent.

i really like the artwork on "the origins" EP; metamorphic METOP23. it's
a black and white illustration by kyle howard. it reminds me of those large
posters that you would color with a dizzying selection of markers. the

i didn't know there was remixes of give it up.. the FFRR 12" only has
the hit version, named "give it up - batacuda refrescante" which is
the only mix i've ever heard (uh, afaik it's the original). i haven't

on the original first pressing this remix 'batacuda' was on the b-side, track 1

- female vocal -
"hie hie
FALL DOWN ON ME

the "hie hie" part was used py dj pierre for "falling".

Yep, a massive thank you to all those on 313 who came down on Saturday. Rob
Euroh tore it up in a big way, why he doesn't play out more outside Brighton
is beyond me because he's an electro DJ of the highest order and I think
would put a lot of the more established guys in the scene to shame. Alas we
couldn't record anything because we didn't have enough outputs on the mixer
(due to Plant 43's live set) but hopefully this situation will be rectified
for forthcoming events. Thanks also to those who gave us an email during my
set on Groovetech on Friday. I managed to get a shout out to you lot during
some Detroit trax (world of Deep I think) in the latter half of the set.

Thx to all who attended the first SLICES event on Saturday at Public Life,
London. Resounding success is a fair phrase. As I had always cautioned, our
problem wasn't not filling the joint but of overcapacity - at about 10, the
doors where shut. A well-known London electro DJ (not on the line-up) was
unfortunately turned away with scores of others.

After starting with a rare treat of wall-to-wall Kraftwerk & Drexciya from
Toby, things got funkier (and messier) with the alien sine waves and crunchy
beats of Rebel Intelligence and Spectraal crews. After about 10 o'clock, it
was dancing room only at the front but the flailing arms and whoops of
appreciation intensified when Rob Euroh came on. Think
DMC-contender-does-Electro. This mate of the Scratch Perverts proceeded to
cut and scratch up UR, Drexciya, Rother, Radioactive Man, old school, new
school, into new territory. The earliest electro mixes I ever heard sounded
like this: With rough edges as well as smooth grooves, long builds as well
as short bursts. It's an art which has largely and sadly been lost. Plus
he's a well-sorted bloke who believes in the music, the scene and the
undepinning ethos 200%. Respect.

Had great conversations with him and a host of others, from the 313 list and
beyond. I always underestimate how gratifying it is to talk with people on a
similar wavelength.

Thanks particularly to Brendan, Guy, Nicole, the three Robs (!) including
Robert Taylor, Tristan, Counterpoint who's over from Detroit, Melody, and
everybody else who came, grooved and schmoozed.

The night's success means Public Life is encouraging us to keep up the
momentum. So please watch this space.

Tracks on that EP are by Cylob, I-F, Ectomorph and Marco Passarani.
the concept was conceived in rome by Passaerani, Ferenc and Andrea
Benedetti.
the profits went to greenpeace.
afterwards it was pressed by rephlex and for a little while they put it in
their catalogue and most of the shops were writing as a record made by
aphex twin and drexciya

Transllusion & OPP are more than likely, James Stinson - authorititative
sources on this list have said recently.

On this subject. I wonder how much we can assume a track by a
Drexciya-related 'name' has been influenced by Stinson?

I'm thinking about the Japanese Telecom LP. There are one or two tracks on
that where the similarity in style, structure, even theme, become almost
compelling ... but then, how can one know for sure?

2002-09-23 Thread Odeluga, Ken
Methinks an anorak aside is called for here:

GMT is constant. What changes (in the UK at least) is daylight saving time.
In the summer the clocks go one hour forward. It's called British Summer
Time. Therefore, between late March and late October, 2300 GMT (i.e. 11pm)
is in the UK, already midnight - and so on.

So 1700 BST in the UK at that time was actually 1600 GMT! I hope nobody
missed the show 'cause of this!

More importantly, does anyone know if/where Gtech archive such sets?

(313) Mururoa And Drexciya

2002-09-23 Thread O.L. From The Basement
I recently purchased the following EP:

V/A "Mururoa" (Stop_1T UK 1996).

I believe it was produced by Drexciya. It comes on milky white vinyl with no
info. Does anyone know the artists and track names on this record? Are any
of them by Drexciya?
Also, were the Drexciya releases or any of the Drexciya related projects;
i.e. Elecktroids, Glass Domain, L.A.M., Other People Place, and
Transllusion, solo efforts of the late James Stinson or was everything done
with Dopplereffekt (whoever he may be)?

It says 'Australian Debut'. Have these been released elsewhere? Every since
Rob first mentioned the C2 remix, I been itching to hear it.
