RE: (313) [313] soiree records?

2002-10-10 Thread Matthew MacQueen
any news on soiree records? i was just listening to the soiree records
collection volume two. it's funky late-night sh*t. any events? any
 releases?

I haven't been a consistent follower of this label.. they've been around for a
really long time though (in record label years, that is).

But one recent release I really like is the Jerry The Cat: Mating Ritual 12,
flip to the Theo Parrish beat freak remix -- which I THINK if you listen
closely you can hear a sound of one of the early Elevate records get sampled,
like a hissing cymbal that comes in an out. It's pretty cool... Maybe I'm
crazy but if anyone else has both of these records do check it out.

I think the source track might be Subterranean?.. it was one of those
un-credited Elevate records with the blue labels, not Theo's Baby Steps one
w/ the red label.. (I always understood the blue ones to be Dan Bell in deep
house mode, and they are most excellent cuts)

Also (trivia) Jerry The Cat did percussion on You Forgot track on Sound
Signature... and apparently has worked with a mess of Detroit producers.

http://www.soireerecords.com/release/srt127.htm

Check it out.

Peace

I recently scored a pair of the silver sony jobs [not sure what the model
number is] they were about 100GBP I think
- I listened to them next to pair fo technics and they clearly outclassed
the technics - the sonys show virtually no distortion at really high vols.

I also find the sony's fit over my ears well wheres as many others such as
technics and senheiser sit kind of on your ear which doesnt isolate as much
outside noise and isnt too comfy imo.

Re: (313) OT: headphones

2002-10-10 Thread Michael . Elliot-Knight

Sennheiser

I don't use a closed cup earphone though because of the risk of tinnitus
Sennheiser makes both open and closed models though
Their sound is much more accurate (and clear/defined) than any other
headphone I've ever used and I find that generally they are loud enough for
most environments - and I have found that the more accurate the sound is,
the less volume I actually need because things aren't muddy and I don't
need to turn up the cue (and if I'm following another DJ I find myself
often turning the cue volume down).
Sennheiser headphones can get expensive but usually the more you pay for
headphones the better the quality - the most important thing is not to
skimp on the quality of the sound because it's not just your mix that you
should be concerned about but also your hearing and the health of your
ears. Tinnitus sucks.

There is a cheaper version which I have,

which are half the price. Again everything is replacable, I've had them
2 years now and I use them ALL the time still work fine. I think
Sennheiser have some weird guarantee that new parts will be available
for up to 10 years from the day you bought them ?!

The only slightly annoying this about the SP's is wire connects to both
ears and they do tend to tangle a lot and start strangling you which
really starts to p*ss you off after a while.

One good thing is the weight - they're very light. I don't find them too

I can't handle that closed ear business, especially when
 DJing, as it makes
you either monitor via headphones or monitors, never
 somewhere in between.

I always gone for the one ear in phones other ear to monitors strategy

RE: (313) OT: headphones

2002-10-10 Thread Neil Wallace

I absolutely *hate* sennheisers, I got a set of beyer dynamic phones
about 4years ago - they sound *really* clear at any volume, theyre
comfortable, everything is replaceable and at 100GBP they seemed
expensive at the time but given how long they've lasted I reckon its
very reasonable.
My only slight quibble would be that the bass response is not as much as
other phones though personally I find it quite nice, particularly when
producing, since I find lots off bass can reduce the general clarity of
the sound.

Oh yeah and the silver sony numbers marc has got are nice as well comfy,
well built, nice sound and marc hasn't broken them yet which is quite an
endorsement!

with regard to District, imho Hackney isn't central enough, but as i've

Public Life - i can't see there being a problem getting a night there again,

I agree that the centrality of Public Life is a major bonus, and all in all
I'm a bit more inclined towards that venue than towards District. District
is bigger, and has really nice sofas, but unless we lay on a 313 bus from
central London a lot of people are going to find it a bit tricky getting out
there, I think. But you never know, there might be availability problems
with Public Strife so it's worth scoping out both options.

How about if I chat to the people at District, Rob talks to PL's owner, and
we compare notes? Late November or early December strike me as ideal dates
(being too close to Christmas would be a bit tricky, what with all those
christmas parties and whatnot)...

Re: (313) OT: headphones

2002-10-10 Thread audax
This is exactly it. Headphone technology is at the level where if you treat
them right, they will last 20+ years. I have been looking for headphones like
this for years, but I became frustrated at the local selection and ended up
getting the Sony 700's. I use headphones for music production primarily,
DJ'ing second and then general music listening/gaming. Although the Sony's are
solid, I know there is a lot that I am missing. Looks like Sennheiser
understands what an audiophile requires.

Great thread.

I've owned one pair of headphones my entire adult life.
  Sennheiser HD 424's.

I bought them 26 years ago. They were the first thing I bought

You can still get the ear pads and the transducer bit (erm ...

 Amazing.

Re: (313) OT: headphones

2002-10-10 Thread Tristan Watkins
I'm a freak. I disagree with everyone so far. :) My recommendation would be
to get different headphones for home listening and DJing. If you're looking
at spending around £100, it wouldn't cost too much more to pull this off. I
have never heard anything quite as nice as my Grado's (and I've used the
Sennheiser's a number of times). I have the Prestige 125's, which isn't even
close to the top of their line. Check it out here, and most importantly,
find some place to give them a listen. They are stunning.
http://www.gradolabs.com

I never use these for DJing though. They have 360 degree rotating earpieces,
which are somewhat annoying for DJing, and I prefer a closed earpiece (for
what that's worth). The trick with a closed earpiece is not to put it over
your entire ear, but cup it over the rear half, top half, or whatever's
comfortable. This is what works for me anywhow... Open air headphones sound
absolutely brilliant, but I want to be able to close off the outside sound
at times, and if you cup your hand over an open air earpiece you get phasing
first, then muffling. Whatever... it doesn't work so great for me, and I
want something I can abuse to all hell while DJing, not audiophile
headphones I'll be afraid of damaging.

For Djing I use the Sony MDRV-600's, which I've had about 7 years now,
original purchase price around $120 I think. I broke one of the headphones
to the point where it was attached only by the tiny audio wire leading into
the earpiece. A little duct tape has held these together for 4 or 5 years
since. Personally, I much prefer the bigger cup on the 600s to the 700s. I
also prefer the flatter frequency response. The 700s are all bass and high
if you ask me, which I don't much care for. I also don't like the way they
sit on my head, but this is absolutely a personal preference issue. If I
bought new headphones now, I'd get some big, loud, foldable, reasonably
cheap headphones with a chord I liked, hopefully paying no more than £50. I
think sound quality is almost a non-issue in DJ headphones. Look at TP and
his phone. Volume and comfort are the most essential qualities. Anyway, this
is why I think trying to find one pair of headphones is the wrong solution,
but YMMV of course.

and Maarten's correct, these are both usually credited as being the
first techno records. Despite the fact that when they came out,
there wasn't any descriptive term that matched the sound.

Soon, it would be widely considered Detroit House though it's not
really fair to use that term, since it implies that Detroit got its
sound from Chicago, which isn't a particularly accurate way to look
at it.

indeed, it's the byproduct of the marketing hype to move the sound
into Europe. as of 1990-2, you could ask the old school freaks what
techno is, and they wouldn't know. but they'd been to the parties,
and knew the sound.

the terminology comes after the sound.

Well, every history I've ever read said that Detroit techno producers
got started by hearing music at the Warehouse.

Their is an extra drive behind us now, due to other nights not offering,

Maybe not always thinking with the head, but with slightly more heart, we
as

 coming months will show that.

First up on Friday October 11th we will be hosting our launch night. This
will feature the talent of the amazing Jonny McIntosh.
Now if you have never heard or seen Jonny then this is the time to change
that. I regard Jonny right up there as a dj; superfluously mixing through
house, disco, soul, techno, whatever. He is like our answer to Theo

As the launch night we are keeping the prices way down at £4/£5. 10-3am.

three ways to define it:

1. techno appears the first time an individual associated with detroit
techno comes out with an album. one of the big three in this case.

Under this definition it'd have to be ALLEYS OF YOUR MIND by Cybotron.
Nothing comes before it...I don't think SHari Vari does.

2. techno appears the first time the term is uttered in a genre-like
manner in a song produced by someone affiliated with detroit.

Under this definition I think it'd be Future by Model 500. Take a
look around you...techno's here to stay.

3. Techno appears the first time the term is used as a record title for a
record produced by someone in detroit.

Under this definition I think it'd be the compilation by Ten Records.

To be really strict I think we'd have to either go with #3, OR point to
some record that comes after someone begins to use the term as a grouping
moniker in an interview somewhere. If for example Juan is talking about
techno music referring explicitly to his stuff back in the eighties,
then anything produced after that point by him could be plausibly referred
to as techno.

öhem, in this detail-case I disagree with you:

techno - was not only invented in da D

Take YMO -

25 Sep 1979 SOLID STATE SURVIVOR

1st track - technopolis

25 Oct 1979 - Technopolis 7inch

Technopolis is a mixed word - techno and metropolis

but just one example -

the whole complex -

futuristic thoughts incl. the aspect of technology making

futuristic art using modern technology - is old

And I´m quite sure it was there in the golden age of Nubia -

But - Juan Atkins way to work with this this

collective cultural matter was awesome and what happened then

and why there is this list -

it´s a big amount of aspects which created the special D-Techno

- Juan Atkins is like the father of this phenomenan
