(313) Los hermanos/trancey/Detroit techno...

2002-12-10 Thread fabrice Lig
I've read the message about new Los Hermanos, tranceI'm from Belgium and
I know what is trance music...It was huge here.

Could we try to find a list of differences...
On the paper, finaly there is common points...
Melodies, chords, ...
But in the reality...
I give you the first difference ;-)
1)Detroit music is funky.

...find the others...maybe like this we'll find the right place for Los
Hermanos (good tracks or not anyway ;-)

(313) François Kevorkian played hard techno...

2002-12-10 Thread fabrice Lig

Hi Guys,
I played last week in Barcelona and Mr François K was on the line-up too, he
played 2 hours of Hard techno loops. Well mixed, no complaint on it but I
was really disapointed about the track selection...

Does someone heard this kind of dj set from him before ???

* I have to say he had to play in the techno room...and his set this year at
Sonar was amazing...

quetzal is pretty much "safe" and boring house track that goes nowhere;
i wouldn't buy it. it just does nothing. i don't get the trance

jaguar. it's kind of music you hear and instantly forget what it was

i can see the epic quality of "trance" in there but there is still a place
in techno for that if you ask me.

Basically, "glitch" is music where the rhythms occasionally spaz out
completely, sometimes in very unsubtle ways and sometimes only slightly.
If you go into Smallfish and say "play me some glitch!", they'll throw
so many records at you you'll be spitting vinyl shards for months.

I guess glitch reference points are people like Pole and Kid 606, but I
think you get a bit of glitch in everything these days. I often refer to
Brandy's "What About Us" as glitch-R&B, for example. If R2-D2 and
Rashied Ali formed a percussive unit, it'd probably be a bit "glitch"
too!

I'm not sure what it means either but I seem to like a lot of the stuff
decsribed as glitch. All sorts of people have been described as glitch from
Akufen to Pole, from Luomo to Kid 606. Even Robert Hood and Basic Channel
stuff has been referred to as glitch. Staeside 313ers might understand it as
minimal laptop IDM kinda stuff.

2002-12-10 Thread Brendan Nelson
Basically, "glitch" is music where the rhythms occasionally spaz out
completely, sometimes in very unsubtle ways and sometimes only slightly.
If you go into Smallfish and say "play me some glitch!", they'll throw
so many records at you you'll be spitting vinyl shards for months.

I guess glitch reference points are people like Pole and Kid 606, but I
think you get a bit of glitch in everything these days. I often refer to
Brandy's "What About Us" as glitch-R&B, for example. If R2-D2 and
Rashied Ali formed a percussive unit, it'd probably be a bit "glitch"
too!

Can anyone shed light on the rumour that Mills is playing an old Wizard

"disco-boogie, house, 70s funk, and heavy hip-hop beats" with an
"International Guest" and I have heard it's Mills from many people, but I
suspect it may merely be conjecture.

This raises the question of what the hell has happened to Heckmann? Last
thing I heard from him was pretty awful if I recall. Maybe a Depeche Mode

I can see the one track "Quetzal" being called trance (that is trance with
a little "t") but I don't think it's cheesy at all. Sure it's really smooth
but what the hell is wrong with that? It's a beautiful trance track like
Model 500's "Starlight". Just too bad that the word trance has been
hijacked by a bunch of people who just clearly *don't know* i.e. Oakenfold,
Sasha & Digweed, Timo Maas, and all those other people who have given up
soul and feeling (or never had it in the first place) for a fat pocketbook
and their picture on the cover of magazines with the title "Ibiza's most
popular DJ". That goes for the fans of this music too who are clueless.

What was that Chain Reaction record that was a balls-out trance
extravaganza? I remember the controversy when that one came out, but I
never bothered listening to it.

Like it or hate it, you have to take your hat off to trance. If the mass
popularisation of electronic music could be summed up in one sound, it'd
be a looping Juno 106 arpeggio over a gradually building snare roll and
soaring major-chord strings while tens of thousands of holidaymakers,
none of whom really like music very much, scream themselves hoarse...
just as the electric guitar had rock'n'roll, the synthesiser now has
trance.

I'll always be slightly nostalgic about the period before trance and
techno properly diverged, though - it was nice to be able to play UR to,
and get a positive reaction from, those early/mid-1990s crowds who had
yet to realise that they were "trance" fans and therefore didn't like
Detroit techno. The converse to that, though, was that you used to hear
much more trancey records in techno clubs...

no steve, you didn't remember it correctly

i got a bigger hiphouse collection as fast eddie!!
that's the word

but with trance - i don't mean it negativly right away

i mean red planet's star dancer is pretty trance like as well,
and i dig a lot of chigago trax-like stuff, like armani & paul johnson of
that as well - as goes for hood & mills, as well because of the hynotic,
repetitive thing - which i call trancy, but maybe the term trance has been
spoilt too much

i can't verify this though - i've only seen his country collection ;)

you've seen more than that...

not only can i verify this, but i've seen photos of Marsel spinning at
Ibiza next to Judge Jules
at Cream. or Manumission. it was in Mixmag. but either way, Marsel most
definitely is a closet trance fan.
he just runs that label as a cover up.

also, if you take "DELSIN" and spell it backwards you get "NISLED"
which is
sigur ros-ish for "Perfecto"

don't be fooled.

RE: (313) re : techno / breakbeat blends

2002-12-10 Thread Brendan Nelson
I am still a total sucker for Claude Young's remixes of Jacob's Optical
Stairway's "Solar Feelings" too - I'm not sure if I can remember a more
successful experiment in fusing jungle-type drum programming with
Detroit melody/sound design aesthetics.

Ultimately, though, I think that the purist in me stopped me exploring
that field any further: I ended up thinking that the presence in my
record collection of both "proper" jungle and "proper" Detroit techno
kind of nullified my need to own records which spliced the two genres
together. But if I'd come across more work that was as impressive as
Claude's remixes of JOS, I might well have paid more attention!

Hi List,

Appologies , but it wasnt me - honest!!

I got one also which had a similar signature to mine ( -BT- ) but it had
a different email address on the end. Mine is [EMAIL PROTECTED]
this was from another domain (cant remember what it was - sorry). Also it
got caught by my junk filter on hotmail which allows list emails through so
I assume that someone has maliciousley tried to make it look as through it

My computer is clean to the best of my knowledge - I work in software

I figured I'd send the alert to the list since BT obviously has a lot of

ahh... I see the person wanted people to think it was posted to the list
with (313) in the header.
So we can assume this person must also be subscribed to the list, we have a
UK and Netherlands reference and an emphases on the word techno.
"techno as the next big thing" being sarcasm, directed at people like

who use the word techno and post about the techno genre.

The talk about Final Cut and Nitzer Ebb this past week reminded me about my
favorite Detroit Industrial/Goth band: Shock Therapy. Found the official
band site: http://www.shocktherapyweb.de/

They pre-date Nitzer Ebb (yet sound surprising very much like them. h, I
wonder...). Shock Therapy was hardcore "Ministry" when Al J. was still
trying to be "new romantic" and singing with a british accent.

I havent found any Shock Therapy songs on the net yet. But tracks like "No

at The City Club back in the day. Anyone else a fan?

of noise maker, big #1 sponge finger or homemade
poster in your face. You have to get there pretty
early to see the ball drop.I'm not a crowd person, so
to each their own. or Rob's own in this case.;)

I say keep your eyes and ears open as the time gets
closer. Just as you would in Detroit. You never know.
Not saying that I know of anything but there are alot
of good nyc dj's so hopefully they will do something.
I *think* some DJ's (who spin techno) from Selekta

ears open to things like Flyer Magazine, Time Out etc.
Even stop by some record stores while you're in town
like Sonic etc.

Also keep an open mind to Brooklyn and not just Manny
where the crowds & tourists flock. As for starting off
the year with Oakfold, you might as well start it off
standing under a ladder holding a black cat with a

Hi Doris.

There's this thing that you might want to check out NYE in NYC that's WAY
better than "Oakey" (unless it's Human League Oakey, and that would acceptable.
I think).

They have this giant party where everyone gathers in Times Square. Heck even
Dick Clark shows up every year! Anyways, they do this thing where they "drop
the ball" on NYC, ushering in the new year with alot of people and confetti and
MTV has bad musical guests. You might want to check that out. Last I heard it's
free of cost, and it's free of Oakey.

Hello folks!

Some recommendations? Okay, here we go:
Check out Titonton's new 12" on Starbaby (SB09) with the amazing Dan Curtin
remix. I think Titonton returns back to a more concentrated appeal of his sound
with this record. I had the impression that he got lost in his SH 101 action
and jazzy experiments on the last records he made... now he is back with a more
straighter stripped down to the essence release. Really great! And the Dan
Curtin remix is high quality as usual. More dancefloor orientated than
Titonton's original

Also absolutely recommended is the new LP by Kettel on Dub (DUBLP07) Beautiful
