You can't just blame music writers, it's an industry thing. Realistically,
practically, if you look at the way music is organised in record stores - do
you really want to sort through all the country releases to get to that
Suburban Knight 12 inch? I can tell you also that the vast majority of
labels come from artists themselves. Never underestimate artists' attempts
to market themselves - and that's understandable. Eg. DJ Hell has claimed to
coining 'electroclash'. I'm sure he didn't envisage what happened with
that. Big beat came from Fatboy Slim! 'House' came from punters at the
Warehouse. You could say media types often take things out of context, or
that magazines exploit it, sure. Some of our most loved music was a 'trend'
at one stage. Techno, New Romantic, whatever. I really think we have to
start to rethink whether 'fashion' is a bad thing. Fashion = change = flux.
It's not something the modern media created. It can be good and bad. What
makes techno special is it ultimately transcended fashion to be tied to a
certain era and beyond.

I think it's still very, very underground, though Metro Area are popular and
commercial DJs have discovered them. The DJs who are playing that sound are
still fairly underground. A few people are inventing new nights around it.
That's the thing in Melbourne - boutique nights with really eccentric music
policies. There is an amazing DJ here called Agent 86 who mixes up electro
with everything rom HMC to Amerie to The Seed by The Roots and his own
electro productions and he scratches and everything. That hybrid style is
the new 'sound' in the underground. He plays RB clubs as DJ Dumb, and
electro as Agent 86. I think ever since the hard minimal sound of techno
fell out of favour people have embraced electro-house. In Melbourne this is
partly because Gasp Entertainment left and stopped doing innovative parties
and the other techno promoters tended to push the hard big room Euro tech
 which people got tired of.
Ministry Of Sound Aust are too busy pimping that revolting Euro-trance, so
 we're safe.

Elements of Life - MAW Feat. Blaze (MAW)
Excellent lyrics concerning our depletion of natural resources.

In fact, a lot of Blaze stuff has really well thought out lyrics

Acting Crazy - Round Three (Main St.)
Weird ass lyrics about someone's smacked up [girl]friend :-)

Dajae - Day by Day (Cajual)
Just great lyrics about coping with daily life.

Maybe it's time we started to expect more though? That 'glad today' record
I mentioned earlier has excellent romantic lyrics, and the Brooks album is
packed with them straight through (even if they're largely nonsensical, they
are great: see - dripping in gold). Dani Sicialano springs to mind too. I'll
be the first to admit that I'll let lyrics slide in house, but I don't know
exactly when we lowered our expectations. Lyrics used to be a big draw for
me before I got into house/techno, and they still are when I shop outside of
this. There have always been good political lyrics, and still are, like
Blackman, etc, but I'd like to see more insightful probings of emotions.
It's not like there's ever been a time when there wasn't some good lyrical
tracks in house, I just think people have more room to write crap if it
kicks.

I don't read those magazines, but sometimes i write for them.
The idea of 'electro house' does seem a bit of an oxymoron to me, since
my concept of different genres is rooted in the characteristic beat patterns
 they use.

House music almost invariably employs a kick on the beat (i.e. 1 2 3 4)

Agreed, this is a nice set. Really captured the 313 feel, Tom. Almost one
for the FAQ! Got a tracklist?

Thanks for all the nice comments everyone, glad you enjoyed it. As for a
tracklist, it gets a bit tricky near the end as there's a lot of unreleased
material mixed with some elements of other stuff, but roughly speaking it
goes something like this...

- All One Love (unreleased)
- Spaces (from Headspace HS 011)
- Hot Pursuit (from Deep Departures DD 003)
- Dusty Loops (from DiY 64)
- Discontent (unreleased)
- Untitled (unreleased)
- plus some elements of my remix of KLaSH Productions 'Scopex' (from
Emoticon EMOT 012)

I think it's still very, very underground, though Metro Area are popular
and
commercial DJs have discovered them. The DJs who are playing that sound
are
still fairly underground. A few people are inventing new nights around it.
That's the thing in Melbourne - boutique nights with really eccentric
music
In Melbourne this
is
partly because Gasp Entertainment left and stopped doing innovative
parties
and the other techno promoters tended to push the hard big room Euro tech
 which people got tired of.
Ministry Of Sound Aust are too busy pimping that revolting Euro-trance, so
 we're safe.

is it just here that this is happening? (australia) or is electro house
 taking over the world?

i love the stuff but i fear that it will become over played and get into
 the
top 40 with really cheesy stuff that tries to emulate the proper atrists
 in
 this genre...

I think it's just a more succinct way of saying 'house music with electro'
influence'.
Labels are useful as tools - eg in rec stores - but I think the underground
takes them more seriously. It doesn't change the way they sound.

I don't read those magazines, but sometimes i write for them.
The idea of 'electro house' does seem a bit of an oxymoron to me, since
my concept of different genres is rooted in the characteristic beat
patterns
 they use.

House music almost invariably employs a kick on the beat (i.e. 1 2 3 4)
and a 'backbeat' sound, usually but not always a clap (i.e. 2 4) Around

Wave Music is pioneering a new format: CD Twelve!
CD Twelves is a revolutionary format of music, which simultaneously meets
the demands of both mainstream music lovers and DJs. The concept behind CD
Twelves is quite simple: 12 on CD. This innovation will appeal to the music
savvy consumer who desperately wants access to the music being played in
clubs, previously available only on vinyl or on compilations, as well as to
DJs who are increasingly incorporating CDs into their sets.

3 Wave's CD twelves will be out on April 29th.

record stores - do
you really want to sort through all the country releases to get to that
Suburban Knight 12 inch?

No, I don't but on the other hand I don't want to look through micro
categories for different types of records and I'm sure record store clerks
don't want to have to start figuring out if something is Death Disco
Electro-House Micro-House or

Start by trimming off the excess bits of vinyl around the label. This bit is
mostly useless and contains wavy lines and fuzzy noise.
Next you need to boost your laser power of the cd player to read the new cd
sized vinyl as its denser then normal cd. Try maybe 500Volts instead of the
usual 240v for your cd player.
Now your you can place the vinyl in the cd player and its ready to play no
problem

But actually this reminds me of a record put out by Nate Young of Wolf

cd size and packaged in a cd jewel case. Very confusing. not really 313
material, but a nice example of vinyl as art.

I wish someone would release this stuff on CD... I dont have room in my
studio area for record players and most of its available only on vinyl...

this leaves me with soulseek (stealing the music basically) as my only
option. I'd happily buy even CD-Rs that are just remastered for CD and
throw down as mp3s. 2 records for 15 or 20 bux would seem fair to me.

I think this is a good idea too:

Record labels offer a catalogue of mp3s. You can buy a batch of mp3 tracks
which would be offered on their web site for sale. The label would then
compile all requested mp3s on one cd which would make it easy to transfer to
Final Scratch, DJ software (for non-vinyl guys and gals), or any other
computer jukebox. (kind of like Beastie Boys offered a few years back on cd)

I'd be interested in paying $50 for 20 songs from my favourite labels
instead of $10 - $15 for 3 or 4 tracks on vinyl 12 (and there may only be 1
track I really care for on the 12).

If I'm not mistaken, TP's Love's Got Me High had sales of over 100,000 in
Europe. I assume the KMS stuff is more, but that might be a benchmark.

Re: (313) Here we go....

2003-05-01 Thread Phonopsia
I don't think this is a bad idea at all. Why not? The risk is minimal
compared to vinyl, it's a little extra money to help keep the label alive,
and there are some people (like Joe) for whom it is a better solution.

I agree the marketing of it is a bit silly, but so what? Most marketing is
silly. I just think it's sort of funny that they were once called CD 5's (or
Maxi-singles) in order to differentiate a CD single with multiple remixes
from the little 2 or 3CD singles (however big they were). CD 12 is an
improvement over the gynecological name of old, and CD 5 never really made
much sense since full-lengths were also 5s. For that matter, the term 12
as opposed to album doesn't make a lot of sense, so one more silly term
among many really doesn't bother me. In fact, I'd like to think of it as an
homage to the history of f*cked up recording format names. ;)

what they should is put out a retrospective box set of
CD-singles all onto a side of a single 12 record,
whose flip side is a pictured laser disc containing all the artwork.

Although I don't know if the magnitude of heat needed to burn the ink on a disc
would be handled so well by the vinyl side. Unless they bound them afterwards
I guess. Cool idea tho.

RE: (313) ELECTRO HOUSE mix questions.

2003-05-01 Thread Rob Theakston
i haven't been following this thread, so i do apologize if this is treaded
ground already

24k -Morgan Geist
Epoch -Morgan Geist
Jersey Chica - Morgan Geist
Just cant get enough - Morgan Geist (just kidding. it's Depeche Mode)
Ride on the Rhythm - Mahogany (unless it's that MAW redux?)
Cafe De Flore - Herbert
Without hearing it, Get on Up and Dance might be Eddie Harris (mizell
production?? macqueen? kellman? bueller?)...though the tempo would be a bit
off?
Acid Soul- Tiefschwarz
Night Birds- Shakatak (unless it's a cover)

sounds like a good mix. i'd be curious to hear it. ESPECIALLY the Shakatak
into The Rapture. that's genius.

rob

(313) ?

2003-05-01 Thread philip

Yes, but we shouldn't be selfish, and hope for other labels to relay the
idea, because on a strictly business matter that's a fresh breath for the
labels business looking at how the market is dead, the big decline of
vinyl's sales..not to mention a new turning point in the distribution,
possibly the expansion of the music we love, before it definitive
death.We need more consumers.

what does 'the market is dead mean' ? i wouldn't have thought that any of
the recent factors that have affected major record companies sales would
apply to DJ oriented / underground / this-listy stuff ? is there really a
big decline in vinyl sales?
