A few things that come to mind-- a weekly house night at club FIVE on Saturday nights and the small Filler party Sunday nights (ambient, downtempo-y). Once a month on a Wednesday night there is an electro-clash party called Sleaze but never been so can't comment. The major weekly (Buzz) closed several months ago. The only EDM shop, Yoshitoshi, closed last week much to everyone's suprise and dismay. There is a new Saturday night rave style party at a venue called the Tunnel. It's a phat pants and glow stick sorta crowd. In Baltimore, there is a club called SONAR that has been booking some good talent although not techno specifically. Magda was there recently however! Hi all, I'm the webmaster of Pulsation.com . Pulsation is a non-commercial website created in 1996. It's entirely not-for-profit and generates no income for me. I broadcast mixes (mainly from Detroit) Recently, i suffer of a disc crash and i lost my list (with nearly 2000 subscribers) :( I tried to reconstruct my list with my outlook adress book and some different backup listings that i have. Re: (313) Stores, clubs etc in the DC/Baltimore area
I've been trying to post this for a few days, but it won't go through, so I'll post the bit that's relevant to your DC events query, since Sylvie should've already received my answer to her Scott Henry question. Not really any techno other than Filler and rare Once Twice stuff (and some of the Metatrack/Metrotechno crew when they get booked). Lots of good Deep House though. Look for these DJ's and nights: Darrow's (ex) weekly at Erico Cafe was great, but if you can catch him anywhere, run don't walk, almost any night at Red is good, the right DJ's at Marx Cafe, House of Secrets (if you can get invited), the Blue Room and (until they took partial ownership of '5') M3 were incredibly consistent - now they do some nice stuff with some cack (IMO). Also look for Root on Tuesday's @ the Blue Room for a nice downtempo/house and broken beat lineup. The Blue Room is the business. Lara's Balto recommendations and general assessment is pretty right-on too. There's also nights like Lemur Lounge in Alexandria which are run by good peepz, but I only made it out that far once. House DJ's to look for: Darrow, Omar Faison, Milo, Sam 'The Man' Burns, Mandrill, Dj Oji, 95 North, Ivan and Carl, Groove District (John and Julius - they have a Wednesday weekly @ 5 that is nice), also Brian Stewart's Wednesday open turntable night @ the Blue Room is one of my favorites. Techno DJ's to look for (if you're lucky) constitute my old crew, but there ain't a lot else techno-wise, so don't yell at me for pimpin' my peepz. ;) http://www.metrotechno.net and the previously mentioned Filler folks. If you ask me, the closing of Yoshi is no great loss, but Pete's right that they had some nice older CD's. The current selection (of CD's or vinyl) was a bit weak IMO though. In general, I'd say you want to stay as close to the water as you can - there's the beach area (Barceloneta - where my fiancee and I are staying the first week) and then there's the Barri Gotic (Gothic Quarter), which is in the thick of things just in from the beach/marina area (on the other side of the marina, Port Vell, is the Ciutat Vella area - that's OK too - and then further in from that is Barri Gotic). To the right of Ciutat Vella and Barri Gotic (as you look at a map - parallel to the coastline) are the Born (bordered by the Zoo on the other side) and La Ribera areas, respectively. All of those are good areas - I stayed in the Born area back in 2000. (I stayed further inland in 2001 - in the Gracia area - because I waited 'WAY too long to book my apartment. Don't wait!!!) The area just above the axis that goes left-right (really southwest - northeast, compass-wise) along the Gran Via De Les Corts from Placa d'Espanya to Placa de les Glories Catalanes and beyond - is about as far inland as I would stay, personally. The subway system is really good there, so it's hard to stay in a bad place - you can get to a station from most anywhere, and it's fast. I highly recommend using it when you're there. Or, when you first get there, climb on one of the big double-decker Bus Turistic busses - they go around to all the major sightseeing spots, and you can get off and back on at will, given a 1-day or 2-day pass. It's a good way to get your sea legs there, and get an overview of the city. Then you can abandon it and get around on your own, i.e. on foot or by subway or cab - if it's too late at night. I've never ridden the city busses as it's too hard for me to figure out the routes, much less speak Spanish to the driver to ask WTF they're going :-) Besides, I like to walk when I'm there - and eventually you'll hit a subway station anyway. There's a temptation to stay along (or as close to as possible) Las Ramblas. I wouldn't - too trafficy, too noisy, too many pickpockets, etc. etc. While it's worth the occasional walk-down, I prefer a nice quiet area to sleep in that's still close to public transport and the thick of things (down near the water). Your mileage may vary, of course :-) (I'm sure Dan Butler or Bart Wolff or other Sonar 313 veterans will chime in to correct me if I'm wrong) - Greg

Right on Kent! This is, over all, one of my favorite streams -- consistently interesting! Variety, plenty of Detroit representation, and a sense of humor. The other day I was on and in the same hour or three you can hear Gas, Stereolab, X-103, Gary Numan, Arab Strap, The Martian, Geto Boys, Ilkae, NewOrder, CiM, Club 8, Astrobotnia, Camper Van Beethoven, Hab, Tom Elis, Monolake, Leonard Nimoy!?! and a host of indie bands I've never heard of before and can't remember anyway. In the spirit of Mojo, there's a subcurrent of the better B-side or album cut you barely remember now, but in retrospect it's better than the single you knew so well in the first place.

How is Blake Baxter as a DJ? I've only heard one vinyl of his, which was brilliant, it was a double set with a guy with a gun on the cover I think, the tunes reminded me of DJ Rush, but less harsh, and some interesting motown sounding samples. (313) New Drexciya album out!
Hello folks! Just bought the new Drexciya album today. Another alias for that album Abstract thought - Hypothetical situations / Kombination Research Records. So does anybody know if those tracks on that album are done with James Stinson or if that's a solo project by the other half of Drexciya? It's a superb album in my opinion, even though there are only 6 tracks on it but I really like it and can recommend it! Cheers, Arne -- °°° www.arneweinberg.de KEYNOTE Rec.
