(313) New Haul
This be the stuff I actually got (of at least some relevance to the [313], and the Joshua stuff, b/c he ain't quite [313] but I know lots of headz still like to follow him via the Prescription/Balance days of yore). I'll try and whip up some reviews of the highlights soon. Future Beat Alliance : Lumiere - 12" [More straight-forward than his earlier stuff, but a pretty nice fit into that Versatile world of Parisian/Detroit techno, but erm, from England] Horror Inc : Horrorama EP [Wicked Akufen track if ya don't know it yet] I:Cube : 3 - 2xLP [Finally getting my mits on it!] Joshua : Nu Cycles [Joshua doin' his boompty house thang some mo'] Kelley Polar Quartet : Recital EP - 12" [Wicked! An absolute must for Metro Area or string-laden disco fans. This one adds vocals too! Probably better than the first one IMHO - see Matt's review from last week] Kenny Hawkes & Louise Carver : Play The Game (Chicago & San Francisco Remixes) - 12" [Bouncy-ass Joshua remix with typically dope bassline] Lucky & Easy : Pimp Soul Blister EP [New one on Ann Aimee. Surprisingly mid-tempo with much more prominent beats than I would've expected] Natalie Gardiner : Trouble In Mind / Going Down Slow / Move Me - 12" [This is the remixes 12". Gorgeous techy soul sorta like Spacek, but with female vocals. This 4lux label looks to be one to watch - run by Gerd, formerly 1/2 of Sensurreal, if memory serves] Neon Phusion : The Future Ain't The Same As It Used 2 B [Slightly older Oren Walters thing - finally found it in stock. Possibly my favorite pseudonym of his] Niko Marks : Chune / Truly Something - 12" [Chune is the chune] Stereo People Vs. Music People : Won't Leave You / Baggershack [More Joshua with help from south of the equator, but the b-side sounds more like a return to the ultra-lush, melodic Circulation material like Patternis/Memory/Ex-Tempo. Picked it up for that] Starfighterz : 4 Flavours Of A Two-Sided Story [More amazing proper techno from Delsin] Theo Parrish : That Day / How I Feel - 12" [Repress = yay!] Titonton : Explicit EP [The beat on the dub on this one sounds great. Not sure how it develops yet though] Yotoko : Wet Ink - 2xLP [Domu can do no wrong] Yotoko : All Creation Remix EP [Ditto - will also fill a gap since this track isn't on the album above] Tristan === http://www.phonopsia.co.uk [EMAIL PROTECTED]

In fact there's a fair amount of proto-broken beat stuff I can think of, like Sensurreal and Gerd and some of the mid-90s Titonton stuff. But really if you wanna talk proto-broken beats check Pal Joey's 'Hot Music' and of course 'Bug in the Bassbin'. Tristan === http://www.phonopsia.co.uk [EMAIL PROTECTED]

a night of music by CanFollowing recent mentions of Can on the list, here's something for those in London: - Kosmische Club presents: halleluwah a night of Can's music: ? excerpts from (inc unseen live + studio footage) from THE NEW CAN dvd: ? CAN DOCUMENTARY: history including classic and rarely seen TV performances. ? CAN FREE CONCERT: Cologne, 1972 (10,000 spectators) ? CAN NOTES is a new film compiled by Peter Przygodda (Wim Wenders): behind the scenes footage. ? filmed studio footage + a short Brian Eno film ? then an evening of star djs playing exclusively Can music all night. All the classics, remixes and some very rare bootlegs (some live, some studio recordings) from the vast collection at Kosmische HQ. live music from: They came from the stars; I saw them "Probably the UK's most pretentious group" Flux "...like the Beta Band on acid" The Wire MP3s: http://www.isawthem.com/vesti.html + The Beale Anglo/scouse art-rockers who play in front of weird films. the 'third from the sun' track is on dego and marc mac's deepest shade of techno vol 1 (never been lucky enough to get near a full 12 of it) probs my favorite track on there that i still play quite regularly (if anyone wwants to hear it it's on my "Lites Down Low" mix on www.emotionelectric.com) anyway the fact that it's on that compilation backs ken's statement below about it being proto-broken beats. and to get back to the original topic, great programming on all levels. robin... -> -Original Message- -> From: -> [EMAIL PROTECTED] -> [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] -> org] On Behalf Of Odeluga, Ken -> Sent: 03 December 2003 07:31 -> To: Phonopsia; Matt MacQueen; kj at technotourist dot org; 313 -> Subject: RE: (313) Dan Curtin Sun EP - was Re: (313) the -> funky 808 drummer -> -> -> Er, Thirded. -> -> 'Third From The Sun' EP on Peacefrog 1995, plus the -> collection on "Web of -> Life" also Peacefrog is still some of the most -> spellbindingly melodic techno -> I've heard. Er, Thirded. 'Third From The Sun' EP on Peacefrog 1995, plus the collection on "Web of Life" also Peacefrog is still some of the most spellbindingly melodic techno I've heard. I've always thought that his drum programming is amazing. As I said to you recently Tristan, I feel it's plausible at a push to hear Curtin's beat programming as proto-broken beats. You all know I love to speculate, but I can't feel that it's too much of a push to see a link in some quarters/senses. "Third From The Sun" is in my top 3 all-time techno tracks in the world ever! (313) Re: Terry Callier - was Re: (313) playlist WNUR Chicago - 28 Nov. 2003
Terry Callier - Sign Of The Times (Elektra) We seem to be on the same wavelength this evening, Matt. :) Has anyone heard the new remixes LP of Terry Callier stuff? Opinions? I had a listen to the couple of audio clips up on Piccadilly but couldn't be persuaded based on that - although what I heard sounded very very tasty. Conversely, does anyone have a definitive release for the uninitiated? "Sign of the Times" is Terry doing a more disco-ish-thing, kind of an awkward sound for him to be honest but that is still great one IMHO, but not representative of his best work. I think the 12" I played was from 1976 or so. The LPs to have are his classics on Cadet (killer chicago label, Terry Callier is a chicago resident still BTW)... the best 3 LPs in a row were originally on Cadet and all from early/mid 70's. Occassional Rain LP -- wow this title track is just sooo powerful, emotive, earnest What Color Is Love LP I Just Can't Help Myslef LP I'd probably recommend them in that order, too. I think there might be represses? maybe try http://DustyGroove.com - they like him there. The original pressings on Cadet go for huge sums on eBay. Speaking of Dusty Groove I think they have this compilation CD of his best stuff called "Essential: The Very Best of Terry Callier" and I can't recommend this comp. enough. You can probably get it at Amazon too I bet. It's expensive but worth it! His stuff when he moved to Elektra was not as good, it was like they tried to make hits out of his stuff and it was just too earnest for that. He's an album guy. The songwriting is sooo brilliant, I mean it's powerful stuff. He was one of those guys that didn't quite fit into a category, jazz, folk, soul, and has always been extremely popular in London even since early in his career. It's not really electronic music in any way, come to think of it. But his voice and emotion and simple beautiful arrangements hits a chord in people. Anyway a lot of newer nu-jazz and house/electronic music people have discovered him or had him sing for them over the years, esp. folks in London. He worked with Beth Orton, and I think Roy Davis Jr, etc. Mark Mac of 4Hero has always cited him as an influence too, I think they worked together at least once too. Haven't heard much of these new remixes so do tell me if they are worth picking up. But I'll be playing the old LPs as long as my needle can track them, they're just really powerful. peace, Matt MacQueen
(313) Dan Curtin Sun EP - was Re: (313) the funky 808 drummer
tons of old Dan Curtin stuff could qualify in my book too.. any of tracks from 3rd from the Sun EP on 33rpm/Sinwave (forgot the track titles, but dang some of those are mad 808 "workouts") Absolutely! I've only just recently discovered that this is what it is. I've known those songs forever, but never but names to beats until the other day. Is it hard to find? Good pressings to seek out? Bad to avoid? Any other info I should know before plungeing in? Hmm well this is kind of a curious piece, so I got home and dug out my copy. I somehow was lucky enough to get one of the clear/pale green vinyl copies on 33rpm (was this the pressing before Sinewave perhaps? [Not to be confused with Synewave!]). Picked up mine at Record Time ages ago... but I think they're hard (but not impossible) to find used, maybe eBay. Here are pics of the only 2 versions of artwork I know about: http://www.discogs.com/view_images/?type=R&wid=81837 etching on the inside is DKB - RA331 (is that Damon Booker's initials or what?) inscription reads "put the needle to the groove and hear virtual reality" ... with NSC logo I have no idea of the # of these that came out... also there is no mention of Sinewave mine, maybe it was before? But it's got the "Black Market Promotion" label, which I also remember seeing on flyers in Detroit during that time.. anyone? The logo is vaguely familiar, it's a black and white graphic of a guy looks like he might be doing a wicked dance move with 2 fists kind of in the air? ha.. in fact now I remember, I think the record sleeve had a Black Market Promotions 3x5 "promo reply card" card in the jacket that I must have lost somewhere along the way, bah. Okay all pressing bullsh!t aside, this is one phenomenal 4-tracker of early Dan Curtin... (1992?) jaw-dropping change ups, sequences, drum programming, tons of 808, searing synth sounds and all around pure electronic techno funk. You can hear where Titonton took off from hearing this type of stuff and that whole Ohio/Columbus / Charles Noel / 21/22 and early Morgan Geist could even be traced back to these kind of sounds as a major influence. It's the detroit moods and crazy funky drum and synth programming.. he was the first to lay it down quite like this in such an incredible forceful way.. a tinge of breakbeat in it too. I must say I feel lucky to have it and it's one of my very favorites in the detroit end of my crates. Really a unique and totally funked-out piece of techno. Dan C. if you are lurking out there somewhere, was this your first record? How did it all go down? peace, Matt MacQueen

I hate seamless mixing, I guess i am comparing it to when he played in canberra last year and was cutting it up all night on three decks. I found the music alot more exciting than the stuff he was playin this time. I was really getting into parts on saturday but it just seamed to stop and start to much. last time i heard him it had much more of a exciting, adventurous and complete feeling. anyways;^) Sam On Wed, 03 Dec 2003 15:47:12 +1100, "Cyclone Wehner" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> said: > I read some similiar things on www.inthemix.com.au (Syd forum) and some > conflicting things. > A few people said he was tired, I have no idea why. RE: (313) Derrick May Melbourne
Just to mention that he played fairly nice set here at Zuok in Singapore last Friday. Unfortunately he had some major technical problems with one of the decks, music stopped at one point after numerous noises coming from the system before that. After party finished (too soon - just after 3 AM) it seemed he had serious discussion with the sound engineer in dj booth. And it is me that criticized his loops style set some half year ago. This time it was muchos better. Agreed 100% with all that, and the stuff above it that I snipped out. Even 'Got Me Puzzled' (which I think is wicked) has not really found its way into many of my sets lately. Mostly just Domu stuff, and Titonton, but they're really doing their own things, and Domu might even be getting a bit similar to himself, but I'm just not sick of it yet. > >Someone please yell at me if any of these are grave mistakes - > before it's > >too late! ;) > > i feel you on your passes. i hope youre feeling that new mahogani > more than when you picked it up. that tune is year end top 10 > material for sure. what a beautiful record. Yeah. It has grown on me, but I'm not sure that I'd rate it quite that high personally. I just think it's really nice and definitely beautiful - but maybe it's just not different enough from the pack to really knock my socks off. I'll definitely be playing it for a while though. No complaints with it really. :) > and i picked up that > ron trent rmx of the amp fiddler, and while its probably my least > favorite amp related record thus far, its still pretty nice. Thought this sounded nice too - but just not different enough from the standard Ron Trent style to justify a purchase. The hi hats sound a lot like an oooh-ahhh synth. Amazing. For 80s stuff, I like a lot the drum breaks part of New Order's Bizarre Love Triangle (Substance mix). Anyone knows who remixed it? Didn't sell me for some reason. Way more into >that Kelley Polar. ill be getting my copy of the kelly polar tommorrow. if that rmx is the same one that was on the verve rmxed LP, then yeah i was totally underwhelmed as well. i guess the concept of metro area is better for original material than for remixing. >Someone please yell at me if any of these are grave mistakes - before it's >too late! ;) i feel you on your passes. i hope youre feeling that new mahogani more than when you picked it up. that tune is year end top 10 material for sure. what a beautiful record. and i picked up that ron trent rmx of the amp fiddler, and while its probably my least favorite amp related record thus far, its still pretty nice. tom andythepooh.com
(313) Stuff I Passed On
New stuffs that looked really promising but didn't quite make it in my basket. All sounded good, but for reasons below, I passed: Dego & Kaidi (feat. Face & Vanessa Freeman) - Ain't Nothin' You Cant Feel - 2000Black Natures Plan - Somewhere Beyond - Far Out Both of these have that characteristic West London vocal chorus. I think I may be getting tired of it. Kinda heavy after a while. Really like the beats/bass on the house version of Natures Plan though. Izzi Dunn- Big Picture Remixes (Seiji /Mark Force/Special mix ) - Fireworx Lionel Hampton - Vibramatic - Crippled Dick Hot Wax Both nice, but unessential Masekela, Hugh: Mama (Metro Area remix) (Verve US) Kinda cool, but I dunno. Didn't sell me for some reason. Way more into that Kelley Polar. Tons out right now, and lots of it is really hard to get a sense of through online clips. I was totally on the fence with a lot of stuff, but will have a full report on the actual acquisitions soon. Not a ton of house that's really pushing my buttons in the last couple of weeks, other than a load of new Joshua and that Kelley Polar. Lots of techno and 'techno soul' though (seems to be the new term on the block - and for once, I think it fits)! Someone please yell at me if any of these are grave mistakes - before it's too late! ;) Tristan === http://www.phonopsia.co.uk [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I've only just recently discovered that this is what it is. I've known those songs forever, but never but names to beats until the other day. Is it hard to find? Good pressings to seek out? Bad to avoid? Any other info I should know before plungeing in? Tristan === http://www.phonopsia.co.uk [EMAIL PROTECTED]
