Re: (313) RIAA v. DJ's
What's the source of this story, just out of interest? -- From: jonathan morse [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: (313) RIAA v. DJ's Date: Fri, 30 Jan 2004 10:00 PM DJs mix CDs attacked in attempt to control copyright Words: Terry Church The Record Industry Association of America (RIAA) has launched a new campaign against DJs in an attempt to control copyright infringement. They have already confiscated $100,000¹s worth of mix CDs from independent record stores across the US. DJ mix CDs, sold in almost every independent record store are on the whole unlicensed and technically illegal to distribute. However, DJs and producers alike often rely upon these illegal mixes in order to gain credibility, and to promote themselves to the general public. The practice is in fact approved of by most producers who see it as fundamental to the survival of the dance scene - even if it is their tracks that are being copied and played without permission. This latest attack by the RIAA is therefore hypocritical they claim that their pursuit of copyright infringement is primarily in the interest of the artist, yet most dance producers actually approve of and rely upon this illegal distribution. The dance scene relies upon these illegal¹ ways tosurvive, and it seems that the only people who actually care about this particular copyright infringement are not the artists themselves but the record companies who are only involved in the dance scene for profit.

I was advised last week to check out their 21st door album, and I immediately remembered why I have a problem with them : the voice is simply to close to Ian Curtis' or Bernard Sumner (depending on the tracks...). Lots of interesting stuff happening on the instrumental side though, so I will give it a closer look... Gwendal

I don't like women to be disconnected from music. I think that if techno has this macho image, it's because women have not been involved as much as they should have been. The female element is vital to the art and the life; women bring an honest opinion to the music; they bring life to this planet and they hold the secret of life. Ah, but I'd say there's an extent to which a lot of these males are kind of forced into a situation like that - you could spend *years* looking around for someone whose mindset and interests are very compatible with your own, but because most people fall more into the ornament category, that's who you're most likely to end up with. Re: (313) Fw: Jockey Slut mag
all i can say is bring back Magic Feet WORD! I would love to hear some views on the decline of the dance music media in Europe. It's not only the UK that is experiencing this. Two weeks ago, Bassic Groove, the leading Dutch dance magazine, announced it had gone bust, restylings everywhere, content moving from music to 'lifestyle', etc. What are the main reasons behind this? Some clues: The fallback in the music industry = less advertisements The availability of much 'magazine' info on the net, usually a lot faster than the paper variant and sometimes a lot more elaborate and FREE! In some European countries the ban on tobacco ads caused serious damage. The (forced) switch to more 'lifestyle' oriented content while there's already quite a lot of that (sort of magazines) around + turning away the music lovers Youngsters have more things they want to spend their money on; magazines don't really take up the primary spot in their top 10... What do you think weighs most on the decline of the paper dance magz? John

forced ? LOL! (313) Visage - Pleasure Boys thread revisited
Just had this cleared up by a bloke at SoulJazz: There is a Pleasure Boys by Visage. This is a remix called Visage by The Pleasure Boys which is indeed a bit like Planet Rock and Al-Naafiyish. This is the one that Mantronix wanted on. I think! So there is Pleasure Boys - Visage and Visage - Pleasure Boys hence the confusion. # Note: Any views or opinions are solely those of the author and do not necessarily represent those of Channel Four Television Corporation unless specifically stated.
