Not quite near downtown, but on Michigan ave and The Southfield freeway there's Al-Berdouni's(sp) for excellent Arabic food and Rosa's Mexican Resturant on the same block. I used to work at a car audio shop that was there years ago and we ate there daily. Plus there's always American Coney Island on Lafayette/Michigan ave/Woodward right downtown. Didnt someone put together an info page of places to eat etc. one year? There are usually food vendors on the festival grounds. Might I suggest stopping by Jacoby's pub for some great beers and nice people. Cass Cafe is one of my favorites (in the Wayne State area-great veggie menu) When in Detroit eat (if you can): Middle Eastern, Greek, Ethiopian (oh the ethiopian wine!), sould food and Coney Dogs and DRINK VERNORS!! ppl always look at me strange when i tell them my comfort foods are hummus, baba ganouji and greek salads (extra beets, hold the olives, dressing on the side...and dont forget the saganaki) but hey- why eat that when you could have white castle? :) d np:shawn rudiman, mix cd --- Logic7 [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Not quite near downtown, but on Michigan ave and The Southfield freeway there's Al-Berdouni's(sp) for excellent Arabic food and Rosa's Mexican Resturant on the same block. You can't get Ethiopian in Detroit any longer, have to go to Windsor (via Tunnel Bus) to Marathon, but the price is right and the food is great. RE: (313) food in tha D
No trip to Detroit is complete without a stop in Greektown. But let's face it, the quality varies somewhat. My favorite place is actually the Cyprus at 579 Monroe. And while it's not Greek, Fishbones (the Cajun/seafood place at 400 Monroe) is quite good, and so is Pizza Papalis. But no trip to Detroit is complete unless you also eat outside of Greektown. It's been years since I was at dinner with a Famous Detroit Techno Producer there, but Union Street is a really good place (4145 Woodward). And of course you have the Majestic right across the street (4130 Woodward). A few years ago during the DEMF we had a big crew that went to Armando's on W. Vernor in Mexicantown -- crowded and fun. When you get out past the city line, there are a lot of alternatives. Royal Oak has a bunch of pretty good restaurants, as does Ferndale. The Clock in Hamtramck is legendary, but the food is below- par greasy diner stuff. Dearborn has many choices including the mega-starship of Middle Eastern restaurants, La Shish (I think they have about 8 of those scattered all over the place now, definitely worth going, wish they would open up downtown). And the only halal McDonald's I've ever seen. Just inside the city line at 7511 Michigan Ave there is the Starlite owned by the Josifooski family (that's what it says on their business card here) and I give that my highest honors for holding up a tradition that is dying out, the family diner, and the homemade sausages and pierogies are worth the trip. I have to admit there are lots of places I should have gone to in Detroit over the years, so maybe this year's festival is the time to venture out. Looking for that exceptional BBQ, the really good Chinese places, etc. There's a slew of Mexican and Central American places on Bagley. And believe it or not after all these years I've never eaten at Eastern Market. One up! I have a soft spot in my heart for Lafayette Coney Island, but not my stomach. So I stick to the apple pie and the ambience when I go there :) fred

(313) May in April 04 URB
Just arrived today ... short blurb in the April URB on Movement ... MOVEMENT MAINTAINS Detroit electronic music festival hits the half-decade mark The always gigantic and usually dramatic Movement [formerly DEMF] electronic music festival held in Detroit will reach a milestone as it celebrates its fifth anniversary this Memorial Day. After four years of money issues, management changes and artistic infighting, the festival remains one of the most vibrant weekends on the American dance music calendar. Producer Derrick May, who personally helped bankroll last year's event after taking over from the controversial Pop Culture Media [who produced the first three outings], can finally fun the festival free from doubters. He has already secured a multi-year contract from the city and full sponsorship for 2004 and is looking forward to taking the Movement Festival to new heights. We're trying to get some next-level acts this year, May told URB. We're not just trying to do the DJ thing. The DJ is the backbone of the event. It's still going to be the backbone, but we need to really be one step ahead and not be predictable. At press time, May was unable to reveal any of the scheduled acts, although he made clear that one of the most heavily rumored bookings was still a work in progress. Further information on the event can be obtained at www.movementfestival.com Joshua Glazer
Re: (313) food in tha D
Folks on this list who know me know that I'm as passionate about food as I am about Techno. Some links and thoughts categorized: On Site: Hart Plaza underground has a few good choices while you're at the festival, but the atmosphere is not about food. Try the Chicken Shwarma. Don't expect anything satisfying if you have a press pass for freebies. Curries: Chicken Curry at the Small World Cafe is legendary to art students and Web workers. Basement of the International Center near CCS. http://www.metrotimes.com/guide/restaurants/place.asp?id=2619 Deli: The debate rages on, classic style at Russell St. http://www.metrotimes.com/guide/restaurants/place.asp?id=3112 vs. funky UK style at E.P.H McNally's in Corktown http://www.metrotimes.com/guide/restaurants/place.asp?id=3947 Funky Pub: Center Street has been remodeled, in slightly slicker fashion. Food not as good as pints, but fun and literally underground. http://www.freep.com/entertainment/newsandreviews/club3_20001103.htm Raw/On Your Own: If you like it raw, or just trust your own devices, PLEASE spend Saturday morning at Eastern market. It's Detroit's largest classic produce marketplace, and hands-down the best way to people-watch Detroit's diversity. Barter for a flat of strawberries, steal a grape, get more bell peppers than a dollar should buy. Don't miss Rafal Spice Co., or R. Hirt. Jr. for the best cheese selection in the Metro Area (1 lb. cuts only) http://www.easternmarket.org/ Shouts out: rasta wings at Union St. (be prepared), two up at Lafayette Coney Island, quiche and wine at Twingo's, and potato pierogi with sausage at Polonia in Hamtramck. BBQ: I'm very biased here. Assuming Linda and I are in town this year, there's a good chance I'll arrange for a pre-festival list-meet barbecue again Friday Night at my house in Royal Oak. More info later, but let me know if you want to make it. Dennis--are you hosting a pre-party too? (ob313: is anyone else finding US domestic releases of good techno CD's slowing to a crawl?) -- Ian

Yeah, but don't you accept that the huge range of opinions you mention is, at the end of the day, an amalgamation of the opinions of a whole range of individuals? And that some of these individuals might sometimes dare to voice the specific opinions they have on the subject of techno? And that they may in fact dare to do so on the 313 list, in the hope that they're not going to be pounced on by someone taking their remarks completely the wrong way? You seem to imply that because one person's view of what techno is might contradict someone else's completely, people shouldn't be allowed to say what their views of techno actually *are*. I disagree with this entirely - I'm extremely interested in what other people's views of techno music are and I would like to see *more* people try to articulate it, rather than have it turn into a taboo subject you can't mention on 313 without being leapt on. RE: (313) what is Detroit techno ...
what exactly is this techno thing you guys arent talking about? Great point, and got me thinking: 'techno' is a classic over/under-defined term, in the sense described in 'Science Sanity' by Alfred Korzybski. A quick definition from http://www.driveyourselfsane.com/dysbook/glossary.html - Over/Under Defined Terms: terms which are over-defined (over-limited) by verbal definition, with these definitions believed in as 'fact', and under-defined by (lacking in) specifics or 'facts'. Hope this helps, Andrew

catagarisation is something that human beings do automatically - it's in our nature, and the reason we do it is for convenience and efficiency. In other words it makes life alot easier. How could we communicate on this list if we didn't do it? I might want to say i don't like hard-loop techno, and we all know what that means. How would i say that without using the catagary of hard loop techno and why would i want to try and say it in a less efficient way. classifying music is no big deal, it's about the human language. we should do it, we all do it, and it would be literally insane not to. there are no drawbacks to it either - it doesn't change the music. Re: (313) what is Detroit techno ...
you're absolutely right - however it can go to extremes and there are drawbacks. some people tend to not look outside their category - Detroit techno sucks I only listen to Swedish techno minimal click house is where it's at Detroit techno is the best etc. categories do change the music as well - people start mixing only one style of music and slowly, almost undetectable, the music changes - sometimes for the better - sometimes not I've lost count of the number of mixes I've heard that are one style only all frickin night it's easy for people to fall into categories but hard to break out of them - and if you have a hard time categorizing a style of music then where in your shop do you place it so that it will sell well? How can you get it into the hands of people who might enjoy it? A prime example of this is a little mix up that happened in my fav local shop. I ordered a copy of the Advent's latest LP Light Years Away - the shop got it in and I bought it but somehow there was a mix-up and it didn't get in my bag of purchases for that day. Instead, it accidentally got into another DJ's bag. Now this DJ plays I guess what people would call hard house and progressive house or some such category. My name and number were in the record, since I ordered it, and he called me up to let me know of the mix-up. I had already got a replacement copy from the same shop so he said he'd keep it because he thought it was pretty cool but didn't know what kind of music it was as he had never really heard anything like it. So - the shop placed the Advent LP in the Electro section but since this guy doesn't buy Electro he would have missed it if it hadn't been for this mix-up. He really loves the LP too. There is your drawback. but I understand that to a certain point - a categorization of sound does help. We just have to remember to keep our heads up above the walls of those boxes. Detroit techno sucks there is nothing wrong with this statement - he may have heard it all and doesn't like detroit techno. the catagory of detroit techno is not problematic - he is using it to tell us what kind of music he doesn't like. if he doesn't really know what he is talking about then that's all to do with his own ignorance. I only listen to Swedish techno again so what? if people are narrow minded enough to say stupid things like this then thats their tough sh*t. i personally hate swedish techno! it's like saying we shouldn't catagarise tv programs so that people don't get locked into just liking sit-coms or science documentaries, or we shouldn't classify films as being horror or thriller.

Re: (313) what is Detroit techno ...
I think you're still missing the point. The point is not to not categorize, but that categorization is in and of itself, something that promotes closed-mindedness. I do believe the original post was that someone wanted everyone else to refer to only detroit or 313-oriented techno, when they use the term techno. This is a disrespect to anyone and everyone that is making what they calssify as techno that isn't 313-related or 313-sounding (to the person who stated this, no less). This subculture has tried to illiminate the close-mindedness of the genre pidgeon-holing through this underground attitude of anonymity, and the whole faceless approach, which DOES make it hard as hell to talk about (as was stated), because everyone begins to use their own descriptions etc. Also, almost all statements that go anything like sucks, are genreally stated with lack of information, because an educated opionist would give a nice reason why it's not their bag. ;) This entire thread is the bore... z (especially my posts...) dns. (313) tta review (OT)
This is for Selekta.com. It's unedited. Excuse the dust as my writing is rusty. I know it's not detroit...but I do know this album was discussed here when it came out. In that regard, it's taken me a while to get the courage to post it here. i wear a helmet. d Telefon Tel Aviv Map of What is Effortless Hefty With their first record, 2002's Farhenheit Fair Enough, Joshua Eustas and Charles Cooper created a loyal fan base through touring and implementing the most useful instrument to any artist; word of mouth. Telefon Tel Aviv's elegant complexities of brash electronics combined with the duo's guitar and piano ambience came at a perfect time when down tempo was becoming predictable and the popular IDM sounds from the West Coast were slowly fading. Farhenheit's orchestrations allowed the listener to assign their own emotions, making it the foreplay to their most recent endeavor. With their recent album, Map of What is Effortless, Eustas and Cooper mark their return with a palate that is significantly stronger and more assertive via forceful guitar chords and the addition of voice. If Fahrenheit Fair Enough was indeed their foreplay, than Map of What is Effortless is clearly TTA's attempt to finish what they started. The vocals of Damon Aaron and Lindsay Anderson leave no question that TTA is ready to present a more visible and wider range of emotional highs and lows alongside their instrumental speak. The gentile creativity of Farhenheit still looms, however the duo explores more raw, frontal sounds as with, What it is Without the Hand that Wields It, a track that is closer to shadows of Aphex Twin than the TTA previously known. The layers of heart wrenching simplistic guitar strokes, computerized crunches and dramatic vocals of 'What it was will never again' perfectly summarizes this album's overall strengths in an audio and characteristic context. The obvious audience favorite will be Effortless' first single, 'My Week Beats Your Year.' It's clap ridden rhythm back dropped into Anderson's popishly seductive vocals are enough to move hips and turn the heads of the music elite all in one spin. However, the dance fever of the single should not cloud what Eustas and Cooper are doing on the rest of this album. There is an obvious map of human emotion being drawn here; one that is much more dramatic, blatant and accessible than that of Fahrenheit's. Sequentially laid out, the listener is lead to an emotional direction that is still left for them to conclude; it truly is what the album calls itself. As with any achieved successor, Map of What is Effortless takes the duo in a new and challenging path of keeping the auditory satisfaction interesting. If this is the temperate foreplay's follow through, than Telefon Tel Aviv's love affair with us has just began. = push the button:http://photos.yahoo.com/dianalynn80 (YahooIM:dianalynn80::aolIM:pottsdia) __ Do you Yahoo!? The point is not to not categorize, but that categorization is in and of itself, something that promotes closed-mindedness. i think that YOU are missing the point. catagorisation is not optional - it is an inate, fundamental and essential part of the human make-up. are you honestly suggesting that it would be reasonable to live in a world where you weren't allowed to describe anything? flyers saying that tonight we are playing music - great, that could really open my mind up to bon jovi or whatever random music might be playing. or describing to someone what music you like without mentioning any catagories? er..i like..er...well i can't say because i could be promoting closed mindedness! you're right, this thread is absolutely fuc*ing crazy. we're only talking here about describing music in words. what is so difficult?
