Re: (313) stinson interview
well it wears me off, that kind of ethnic recuperation of 'music'. all is an influence of another unless you lie suffocating in your own oxygen-lacking biosphere, right. I remember presenting the topic straight to Richie in 97 for an interview and he just was cool with it, and replied that a week before he had been eating with the other member of Drexciya. And what if techno music integrated Kraftwerk? 'Don't tell me Kraftwerk were black' he said. I was so glad. A black and white world is what I truly detest, even if one day 50.5 % of America would decide we're better off that way Mario Aidan O'Doherty schreef: http://www.dorja.com/~daveg/entries/2004/10/14/drexciya-interview-from-melody-maker-1995/ apologies if this has been posted before. the late mr stinson didn't mince his words, especially with regards to hawtin. how long is it since there has been a richie bashing on this list? ta, aidan

De Block, Mario Quote A black and white world is what I truly detest, even if one day 50.5 % of America would decide we're better off that way Mario But a black and white world or is what we live in. Well at least here in America. Things are SO Clearly Divided it's pathetic. That's just reality. As for Stinson's comments, everyone has to remember that was back in 95' even by 97' 98' he had somewhat changed his viewpoint on hawtin. He then started to blame a lot of the problems on the first Generation's Exodus of Detroit. So like any man/especially an opionated man you find that he contradicted himself a lot through-out time. I've posted to several Canadian boards already. For right now I'm seriously researching this. What does it take to 1.teach in Canada 2.teach in the UK. For right now it's not permanent, just temporary. At this point I need something to make me understand and appreciate American more than I do right now. I figure maybe leaving for a while after graduation might be the only solution. If there are any teachers on here I could speak more indepth with this about please let me know. Email me privately. In a way it may be for the best the way the vote has gone. It could have been a bit of a poison chalice for the democrats, considering the mess the US economy has been left in and the situation in Iraq. Four more years might be just what it takes to wake some people up in a real and meaningful way ! Still extremely depressing though Eamonn / D1 --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. RE: (313) Kerry admits it's over
Yo this was the most important election on earth in recent history. The effect that the elected president has the oportunity to have on the rest of the world is unprecidented. Obviously not too many people thought it through. I have a friend whose wife was kerry all the way and then voted bush last night because she couldn't bear to make her mom mad.!! WTF? The decision of the direction of our country hinges on someones maternal issues? This is not what the country needs and I feel it really underscores the (apparrently) overwhelming notion that it's okay to base life altering decisions affecting huge sections of our (earth's) populace on personal fears (whether real or suggested/planted by media). with regards to the outcome of the marriage laws, I think the gop has succeeded in creating an atmosphere of fear so pervasive and a media blackout so effective, that the american people have begun a regression into the whacked-out puritan paranoia that founded this place.! And before I get in any trouble, sorry all, it's a real sore spot for me but I'll shut up now. Hows the job market in canada? I really would like to know from someone on ground zero. I think the gop has succeeded in creating an atmosphere of fear so pervasive and a media blackout so effective, that the american people have begun a regression into the whacked-out puritan paranoia that founded this place.! -- I think that if people made a point of accessing more global(ly oriented) and 'alternative' media it could really make a difference in obtaining a more balanced view on a whole number of issues. And before I get in any trouble, sorry all, it's a real sore spot for me but I'll shut up now. Hows the job market in canada? I really would like to know from someone on ground zero. For obvious reasons... Will it all go to damnation? Well... I seem to rember a certain musical style (or at least currents within it) found a fertile breeding ground in the grim mood of the 80ies when Reagonomics and the virtual bankrupcy of the US due to the fight against the 'evil empire' (Does this sound familiar?) was weighing down big time on 'little folks'. Many of us may have very strong, deeply personal opinions right now about what's happening in america, for better or worse. i'd hate to see the value of 313 get eclipsed by personal / us vs. them / partisan / policy attacks that devolve into a pissing contest, stereotypes and cliches. please everyone make an effort to not use the list as your plank/stump, and respect each other even when you opinion is 180 degrees opposite of someone else. i have very strong feelings too but knowing when/where to discuss them is part of what makes you a asset or liability to 313. this can be done in a respectful, open and on-topic way... or a poisonous, personal attack route... make sure it doesn't go the latter and keep things on topic. also, just so all the non-US listmembers know, it's probably a sensitive time to scrub salt in any fresh wounds.. proceed with caution as you trip over each other to all chime in. are you really adding value to 313 or just throwing rocks at an angry bees nest already. let's all cool out. and have a stiff drink for that matter. -- Matt MacQueen http://SonicSunset.com

We'vew Gotten WAY off topic. But oh well. Someone will have some music news soon. :) But I've often wondered, why people get personally upset When another speaks negatively against America. Regardless of Political Party. I mean seriously. I love America, But there are things wrong with this country. Just like all other countries there's good and bad. Are we not to ever discuss the bad???Are we suppose to Just ignore, the over-consumption, complete disregard of natural resources, poor schools, Outrages healthcare system, etc. etc. It's not like we're making up things , we're just stating the facts in hopes of discussing a solution. But often times I find people here, both repulican and democratics that say,, oh if you hate it, then leave. ?? How is Canada? I hear it's great for the arts and not bad for techno, my girlfriend loves vancouver. Ja'Maul Redmond I was talking with a Canadian about this at the weekend (not sure if the guy's is still on the list, he said he used to be.) I was somewhat surprised to hear that techno, in the widest sense, was still 'happening' in Montreal (more than Toronto). Maybe I shouldn't have been though, with the well-known ascendance of the glitch/minimal house trend in that city. I suppose the Mutek festival is the best manifestation of that. Maybe we should now conclude that for music at least, Canada is closer to 'Detroit' than most of the USA, quite literally. And now, perhaps more than ever! (Before I get flamed, I should make it clear that I'm only being half-serious!) k

RE: (313) OT :Oh! Canada,,, Oh Canada,,,,,,,,,
i completely agree with matt's sentiments, but the subject says OT, and i am too angry to restrain myself to platitudes and self-censorship. you can not share a passion for the arts with being a bush supporter. there is virtually no gov't funding of the arts now, and it's going to get worse. it has already had a dramatic effect on arts and culture in the past 4 years. it's like being an animal lover and wearing fur, totally moronic. this has a drastic affect on the art world as a whole, from the academic world, to the viability of clubs, galleries, and performance spaces, to the economic wellbeing of arts-related industries. to be a bush supporter is to be obsessed with safety (an obvious euphemism for FEAR) and an agenda to make the christian way of life synonymous with the american way of life -- at the expense of civil rights, women's rights, religious freedom/seperation of church and state, fiscal responsibility, diplomacy, healthcare, education, responsible military strategy, etc! and har har, what a brainwash, the world hates our conservative leadership and it makes us a target, less safe (more fearful), so it's not about safety, it's about (christian) american self-righteousness, ego, and fear-induced puritanism going in a downward spiral. it's a tragedy! and it's dangerous. one of, if not THE most fundamental philosophies espoused by the constitution is seperation of church-state, it's the whole reason there is a USA to begin with, and yet we have evengelical christians guiding the country, making their beliefs law. thats so amazingly wrong, and in fact i think it is unconstituional (in ideology, if not by the letter of the law) to run for office on such a platform. popular support does not make it right; democracy is not democracy when it favors a viewpoint which inherently rejects other substantially represented viewpoints -- that's a democratic removal of freedom, which is as fundamental and dengerous a paradox as can be. it's fine to believe what you want but you can't impose your religious beliefs (aka morals ha) on the whole country. this election has been decided by scared little sheep clinging to tough talk, their empowering SUV's, and selfish, singleminded notions of God and morality that are retreating backwards towards puritanical blindness and intolerance. it's a failure of the american education system. unite the country my ass. good thing those republican-made Diebold voting machines in ohio and florida made for an accurate count (which Mr Diebold promised would go Bush's way months ago). the few times they've been independently tested before they've shown hours of un-recorded votes, unauthorized modem activity, and other signs of tampering. but EVEN if this election was won fair and square, which i rather doubt, i don't care -- the people and the leadership of this country disgust me, and i see incredibly dangerous trends taking hold. we're going backwards, and it's my country too, i'm entitled to be pissed off as much as anyone else is entitled to be rejoicing. and i am so f***ing pissed off. and i am thankful to see others who sympathize regardless of the forum. jt ps nice words ja'maul. -Original Message- From: Stephen Burd [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Nov 3, 2004 1:23 PM To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: RE: (313) OT :Oh! With all the political passions being released on the list today I would like to say that Stephen Burd actually called me to discuss the issues, talk about Detroit a little and to say that like my beginning statements, his statement was partially a joke as well. We all have our own personal and political beliefs and a discussion board is exactly a place to post them. But what I often find is that some people say or do things that they wouldn't necessarily say in person. I've had many debates,,(never political,,lol, mostly musical) on other message boards but I've never had anyone to actually take the time to contact me personally to clarify anything that may have been said on the message board. Stephen did just that. And to me that is admirable. With that said, I'm still interested in Canada,,,:) mainly because I was interested before the election and even more so now. I feel some pretty dark, hard stuff coming out of the machines tonite once I patch in. fxckin pissed. I can't even listen to can you feel it - fingers right now. That's usually my inspiration if nothing else works. Feeling pretty pressurized. Feeling like making some techno. On that note. I also wonder if allowing the anger and judgemental attitudes to take hold now (after 4 years of trying to remain calm and balanced) might be counterintuitive to our (de/reprogrammers) cause. Are these feelings an acceptable response to the situation or is this the reaction the programmers wanted? Can techno really make a difference? If so, will the nitelife laws act as a limiter on any power that techno posseses? Was this a calculated preemptive strike to dull the power of techno? Discuss? **clarification** not really asking for advice as much as trying to spark intelligent convo on the subject AND keep it somewhat on topic. Kamal K. Canada,,, Oh Canada, i completely agree with matt's sentiments, but the subject says OT, and i am too angry to restrain myself to platitudes and self-censorship. you can not share a passion for the arts with being a bush supporter. there is virtually no gov't funding of the arts now, and it's going to get worse. it has already had a dramatic effect on arts and culture in the past 4 years. it's like being an animal lover and wearing fur, totally moronic. this has a drastic affect on the art world as a whole, from the academic world, to the viability of clubs, galleries, and performance spaces, to the economic wellbeing of arts-related industries. to be a bush supporter is to be obsessed with safety (an obvious euphemism for FEAR) and an agenda to make the christian way of life synonymous with the american way of life -- at the expense of civil rights, women's rights, religious freedom/seperation of church and state, fiscal responsibility, diplomacy, healthcare, education, responsible military strategy, etc! and har har, what a brainwash, the world hates our conservative leadership and it makes us a target, less safe (more fearful), so it's not about safety, it's about (christian) american self-righteousness, ego, and fear-induced puritanism going in a downward spiral. it's a tragedy! and it's dangerous. one of, if not THE most fundamental philosophies espoused by the constitution is seperation of church-state, it's the whole reason there is a USA to begin with, and yet we have evengelical christians guiding the country, making their beliefs law. thats so amazingly wrong, and in fact i think it is unconstituional (in ideology, if not by the letter of the law) to run for office on such a platform. popular support does not make it right; democracy is not democracy when it favors a viewpoint which inherently rejects other substantially represented viewpoints -- that's a democratic removal of freedom, which is as fundamental and dengerous a paradox as can be. it's fine to believe what you want but you can't impose your religious beliefs (aka morals ha) on the whole country. this election has been decided by scared little sheep clinging to tough talk, their empowering SUV's, and selfish, singleminded notions of God and morality that are retreating backwards towards puritanical blindness and intolerance. it's a failure of the american education system. unite the country my ass. good thing those republican-made Diebold voting machines in ohio and florida made for an accurate count (which Mr Diebold promised would go Bush's way months ago). the few times they've been independently tested before they've shown hours of un-recorded votes, unauthorized modem activity, and other signs of tampering. but EVEN if this election was won fair and square, which i rather doubt, i don't care -- the people and the leadership of this country disgust me, and i see incredibly dangerous trends taking hold. we're going backwards, and it's my country too, i'm entitled to be pissed off as much as anyone else is entitled to be rejoicing. and i am so f***ing pissed off. and i am thankful to see others who sympathize regardless of the forum. jt ps nice words ja'maul. -Original Message- From: Stephen Burd [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Nov 3, 2004 1:23 PM To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: RE: (313) OT :Oh!
