Not really a record story but just as painful. I've always been a fan of Mr.
D Hirst, so when I found out that a good friends girlfriend had become his
PA, I thought I'd be cheeky and ask if I could get some discount on a
picture. Bingo, one of his dot paintings was up for sale, I put my pitch in
and got it. I spoke to the Gallery and they got it framed to the artists
spec and sent it off via UPS. For 3 days I watched for the van, until in
finally arrived.

The receptionist signed for it and came down to our offices with what looked
like a bag of fire wood and broken glass wrapped in bubble wrap, and that's
exactly what it was - the painting was in a thousand pieces and was making a
great sound when you gave the bag a shake. I called the gallery up and he
was gushing, "do you like the picture Martin, we have a some prints you may
be interested in". I asked him if he'd like to hear the painting..."What?" I
held the phone to the bag and gave it a good shake. He then spent the next
20mins saying sorry in every way possible. He sorted me out with another
painting in the end...Mr Hirst was very p1ssed off tho...

Hi There,

A friend forwarded this review to me so I thought I'd make a short response.
While I don't have a problem with someone finding my set boring, I do feel
the need to address the 'lazy DJ' issue.

When I approached the decks the master fader on the mixer was all the way up
with the level completely red, the channel levels equally hot, and the
Mackie monitor to my right blown out. This left me with the tiny monitor to
my left that was already clipping. Given the fact that this was an art
gallery with no 'sound guy', I couldn't really have turned the levels down
and turned the house sound up. So, I had to wing it. I was often spending
too much time trying to hear myself to appear 'less lazy'. It is true that
one track did run out in the process though the next beatmatched record was
brought in before the next measure had even run out. But hey, you can't win
em all.

The truth is that I don't tour Europe and play like that, because these
conditions do not present themselves in Europe. In any case, I thank you
for coming and dancing (footloose indeed!). There's a partial mix up on my
site that is more typical of what I like to do with a couple of turntables.

All the best,

Jeff SamUEL

even play the extreme minimal stuff here. He played a bunch of
Overly-produced stuff similar to his productions at that time.

But like the first guy said the girls were loving it. I left after
about 45 min. both times.

no, jeff is an awesome dj, he must not have been trying hard that night.
i remember stories of a party in ohio (where he's originally from) years
ago, where he was impressing even titonton -- he can mix pretty quick
and has a real good sense of what fits together (or at least he used

chancellor, rob hood, convextion, cristian vogel before he went noise,
old morgan geist stuff...it's a fantastic mix, tho he was hating on it

unofrtunately, i think his taste has devolved some, but maybe thats
because i agree that that kompakt/traum/etc minimal stuff gets real
boring...he used to play more melodic and funky stuff...

Richie has good taste!

This is an absolutely mind-blowing track, released on a Swiss label
called Bruchstuecke which is distributed by Kompakt. It's got a real
subtle growling buildup reminiscent of Random XS or something like
that
but without straying into full-on minimal acid rave territory, topped
off with some wonderfully understated clicky goodness over the mayhem.

The two cuts on the flip are solid as well.

Bruchstuecke the label is definitely worth checking out also - Luciano
has had a few releases on there that are really good, and quite
diverse
(a few pop songs from him as well!) and their recent long-player,
'Music
for Children' is worth at least two listens.

Good stuff.

(313) jeff samuals review/gear question

2004-11-08 Thread tevans1111
Since I asked about him, I thought I might as well review him. Let me say
this first, as much as I want to be old and jaded about the techno/techaus
scene in SF bay area, I have to admit that it is coming back on. It will
probably never be as great as it was 7-10 years ago with weeklies bringing out
313ers gallore and people doing mad underground warehouse jams but events are
drawing good crowds of people that are dancing. The coming back of the techier
side of bay area dance culture is really great, I have only longed for the demf
once this fall.
So Mr. samuals, he did have all the girls dancing and most of the club,
eventhough the gallery space has a no dancing permit or lack of a dancing
permit. It is like footloose all over again, anyway such are the times. It is
still great to dance, he played some classics and some kompakt come truam esque
techausy stuff that was consistant if a little boring to me. He was a lazy dj
though, letting tracks run out and then quick mixes out. I was kinda shocked,
he tours europe and plays like this? Maybe his live sets are where he makes
his name? On the plus side, Broker/Dealer continues to get better and better,
they played better with dance floor than the last time that I saw them.

Mixer questions, I am finally upgrading to a better mixer and I have been
drooling over the DENON DNX1500, has anyone played on one? Any comments? Or
just general comments about the new denon mixer line?
For the UK djs, I was also looking at the KAM mixers, are they as good a people
claim or are they crap?
thanks
tom

Back in July of '01 I played out at the Techmoto fest in Canton, Mi. I
played kinda early on the side stage which was completely uncovered and the
day was geting pretty hot. I let a track on Jay Denham's "Muffler Man" play
a bit longer than normal so the tech could fix a problem with the other
turntable. I turned away for a little over a minute and came back to find my

I ended up buying another copy. I couldn't even get it into the sleeve.

Do you mean recording music while playing live with your equipment?

No I mean a program that lets you (from a link on a website or similar)
download at several times real time and store on your hard drive audio
that
would normally only play as streaming audio when you clicked the link.

For mp3-streams I use:
http://streamripper.sourceforge.net/

Instead of putting the url to the winamp, put it there. It's a pretty easy
software to use and there is even a tutorial there on the site.

Friend of mine suggested streambox VCR or NetTransport. Haven't used
those. I think Streambox VCR works for RealAudio streams.

I use wavelab and cooledit. Quite simple but effective.

Can anyone give me any tips about capturing (if that's the right word)
streaming audio? eg. good programs (I heard of one called Hijack for Macs,
don't know if there's a PC version), maybe point me in the direction of a
forum of technical site which will give me info?
What are peeps experiences - does this work generally?

9 O'Clock Drop is one of the great comps of all time. Many
many great ones on there, but worth it to me just for Quando
Quango and Colourbox alone.

Also try to get your hands on the 9 O'Clock drop mix if you haven't
already, one of the best mixes I've ever heard (but spanning a different
genre and time)

(313) KDJ: Behind the sheet

2004-11-08 Thread Tristan Watkins
Man, he was dope. Only got to stay until about 11:45, but he turned that
shit out. I could be reading way too much into it, but it seemed like he
made a conscious effort to put on a smile for the British audience, after a
long history of misunderstanding. A good chunk of his set was requests, and
a lot of the rest of it was really unexpected, like Pink Floyd, Fleetwood
Mac, etc. At any rate, he engendered a great vibe, and I think everyone was
having fun. He even enticed about 8 people down from Glasgow. Those who
missed it, should've sacrificed more sleep. I hear the set in Manc was
equally good. Would love to hear full reports.
