(313) new stuff
hal varian 'catalysm ep' (new religion) nice, varied, original, moody, deep funky techno with a bit of a broken edge in the title track. sweet. various 'amsterdam remix ep' (new religion) mostly as above. nwaq remix sounds a bit like they went out for a cup of tea left the machines to themselves for a bit too long but the rest is real nice. various 'thoughts from Chicago vol 1 (eargasmic) the k. alexi track 'me' is real nice, I guess it's a bit mr fingers-esque but a bit more uptempo or clubby. the vibes timbales are kept in check so it doesn't veer into a noodlefest or latin house territory, mercifully. the other tracks are kind of ordinary, imho. freedom soundz (alex attias) 'hero / journey' (goya neroli promo) don't know which is which, one is deep groovy vaguely sci-fi house (well you know what I mean - all those funny noises that you find in the techier broken beat stuff) *kind* of similar in feel to alex's previous track 'distant planet'. the flip is a bit pointless. surface noise 'add noise' (earsugar beatbox) ummm, it's funky, it's a tiny bit glitchy / clicky, I guess you'd say it's post basic-channel, minimal, warm, melodic. I like it. check 'em out. p-doggg

[dustv004] Simplex EP By Carl Taylor Carl Taylor dishes up a large slab of Northern Electronic Soul on this multi-dimensional EP of funked up arse movers and heads down no nonsense techno. Simplex brings the deep sound of one way machine music from the darkest side of South Yorkshire, waging war against the big club mentality and a home town that has clearly forgotten it's own history in favour of empty chrome plated platitudes. System 23 provided a remix aimed squarely at the dance floor, it's clear they don't care for the miserable moaning techno brigade, their mission is to bring back the fun to the dance floor and they clearly don't care what anyone else thinks. Who Is In Control serves up the nightmare of machines taking over and the author just wanting to be left alone from both human and android pettiness/contact, thundering kicks that sound like the drop hammers from the now derelict ForgeMaster pound the listener into early submission, a truly schizophrenic ride. Kooky Trax 2 closes the EP with scattering drum patterns, glitched out bass and analog textures from the wrong side of a trip. Any thoughts Robin? well yeah :). sunchaser is the track for me. and i guess its a full version on the 12, the one on the 7 is just a truncated version. starts with funk influenced UR style and then just drops into a beautiful floaty synth section. very nice. and i'm gonna have to edit this 7 up into a 12 now :) anyone have both records? any difference apart from length of the mix? robin...
Re: (313) Mos Def added to Fuse-in line-up
Well isn't that the problem with every book turned into a movie? It just works for short stories like Shawshank Redemption and 12 Monkeys i think. Especially in books like the H2G2 series were there is a joke after every 3 sentences. The script was co-written by Douglas Adams, he worked on it before he died, but i am gonna watch it this weekend se then i'll know what to think of it :) KJ the paranoid technotourist On 4-mei-2005, at 15:05, Odeluga, Ken wrote: I've yet to hear anyone say a kind word about that film. -Original Message- From: diana potts [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] interesting, i _heard_ mos def isn't cheap to get, he oddly fits in with the rest of the line up. I think His addition is exactly what this festival needs. I think He'll draw a considerable amount of the Cities hip-hop fans that, otherwise, wouldn't attend this year, due to the admission fee. Hip-Hop fans don't pay admission fees to see John Tejada. I hope this helps makes up for the lack of attendance due to the cover charge.

-Original Message- From: diana potts [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] if anyone doesnt go down b/c of FIVE dollars for -all- day- i hope they stay home. I think you're missing the point. I'm referring to an entirely different demographic. Thousands of people have attended the festival in the past, due to the fact that it was free. It was something new to check out, for free. They may not be fans of electronic music. But they came to check it out, just for the sake of it. In case you're not aware, hip-hop is the music of choice for most of Detroit's inner city population. Mos Def will attract these people in a way that non hip-hop artists won't. I wouldn't pay $5 to attend a show that was strictly hip-hop, but if you threw a couple of my favorite electronic artists on the bill (big names at that) I'd probably go check it out.

Mike has the technical and programming skills that only come with many years of DJing (he has been at it for over ten years). He is also an amazing producer, with releases on Force Inc, Logistic, and his own Cynosure imprint. Mike is a key part of the Montreal minimal techno scene, and we are thrilled to have him play tonight. Other members of the Mutek entourage will be in attendance as well (not playing records, just hanging out) ... so come say hello, Canadians are notoriously friendly! DJ Abstract is Alex, who has been our barback and door person for the last month or so. Dude has always been enthusiastic about the music we play, so we had to get his story. Turns out he put out some records on Palette (that's John Tejada's label) that we own and love. His band The Invisibles put a record out on DJ Hell's International Deejay Gigolos label. Oh yeah, he's also one of the most well respected US drum'n'bass producers. He has a huge discography spanning many labels, including many on his own label Pneuma. He's kinda new to town and hasn't really played out much yet. We're expecting good things from his set. We met Jon Santos in the design world. Among many other things, he is known in New York for throwing the insanely popular Average Saturdays at subTonic last year. So now we know him as a great DJ who crosses genres and always gets people on the floor. plus ... resident DJs: Spinoza, Movement visualists: Chris Jordan, Giles Hendrix Fridays at subTonic 107 Norfolk Street (212)358-7501 $5, 21+, 9p-4a X Saturday May 7 Mutek and The Bunker present Mini-Mutek NYC Live music: Akufen (Force Inc, Perlon, Mutek | Montreal) Deadbeat (~scape | Montreal) Vincent Lemieux (Musique Risquée | Montreal) Once11 (the Agriculure | Barcelona) Crackhaus (Musique Risquée, Mutek | Montreal) Someone Else (FoundSound, Musik Krause | Philadelphia) Hearthrob (M_nus | NYC) Socks and Sandals (Love and Cush, Microcosm | NYC) Gys (zer0 g | Boston) qpe (the Agriculture | NYC) doily (Broklyn Beats | Brooklyn) Live Visuals: Chris Jordan (The Bunker, V4 | NYC) Giles Hendrix (The Bunker, V4 | NYC) Nadia Duguay Pascal Coté (Les Technocrates | Montreal) Akufen is one of the most well-known micro-house producers in the world. His 2002 debut album My Way on Force Inc caused ripples in the electronic music waters that are still being felt today. Since then, he has remixed everyone from Richie Hawtin to Massive Attack. Akufen incorporates found sounds, random radio static, and other weird noises into his music, giving it an instantly recognizable sound that really stands out from other producers. This is a rare NYC appearance. All 3 Deadbeat full lengths on ~scape have been spun many times in the early evening at the Bunker, and they usually bring the trainspotters running up to find out what the hell it is. Scott Monteith (aka Deadbeat) makes impossibly deep digital dub that somehow avoids all of the dub cliches and puts a fresh spin on the decades-old genre. As amazing as the albums are, you really have to see the live set to fully appreciate the sound. He had heads spinning and hips shaking at his last subTonic gig. His new album has a subversive poltical edge (something that is sadly absent in most electronic music), and we deeply respect that at the Bunker. http://techno.ca/deadbeat/ Also appearing will be Crackhaus, which is Deadbeat's other project with fellow Canadian Stephen Beaupre. Their sound will definitely appeal to fans of micro-house superstars like Akufen and the Perlon crew, but they put their own humorous spin on the genre. Vincent Lemieux is Akufen's best friend and partner in the Musique Risquée label. He is a major participant in the Montreal techno scene, and we are excited to see what he brings to the table at this event. Once11 is known for an omnisensorial sensibility that exploits more than one plane of sensorial input. The audio aspect of his work is filled with references to various electronic music styles such as drum 'n' bass, house, dub, dance hall, and 1950s musique concrète. His urban visual narratives incorporate a wide variety of popular sounds to reflect the tensions and chaos of today as malleable
Re: (313) Mos Def added to Fuse-in line-up
actually hhgttg was a radio show, then adams wrote the books, then there was the bbc tv series (6 episodes) and now finally the movie. - Original Message - From: Klaas-Jan Jongsma [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313 Mailinglist List 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Wednesday, May 04, 2005 9:41 AM Subject: Re: (313) Mos Def added to Fuse-in line-up Well isn't that the problem with every book turned into a movie? It just works for short stories like Shawshank Redemption and 12 Monkeys i think. Especially in books like the H2G2 series were there is a joke after every 3 sentences. The script was co-written by Douglas Adams, he worked on it before he died, but i am gonna watch it this weekend se then i'll know what to think of it :) KJ the paranoid technotourist On 4-mei-2005, at 15:05, Odeluga, Ken wrote: I've yet to hear anyone say a kind word about that film. From: Odeluga, Ken [EMAIL PROTECTED] I've yet to hear anyone say a kind word about that film. Not just the critics, people I know. How could the producer/director etc get it so wrong?!?!?! On May 4, 2005, at 6:58 AM, Thomas D. Cox, Jr. wrote: really? everyone i know who has seen it feels about the same as me: it was pretty good for a book that seemed pretty difficult to accurately bring to the screen. only a few bits irked me, but they made up for it by getting alot of the little things in there. i thought mos def was great, as were pretty much all the main actors actually. the voice of marvin was perfect, and trillian looked just like id envisioned her. tom still haven't seen the film but pretty much everything else actor-wise he's done has been good. far from rap-guy-in-a-movie typical.
