this wasn't our experience at all when we were over a few weeks ago-
although the downstairs area was pretty hardcore gay, the Panorama bar
was just like a "normal" club, very mixed crowd who were incredibly open
minded about their music- def one of my favourite places I've been to in
the last couple of years- we didn't have any problems with cameras
either.

The Soundslike party (Alex posted the LD link) is definately the place
to be on Thursday night if you like good music. Raf and Dave are wicked
djs and Dani Sicilliano played some great tracks at the party I was at a
couple of weeks ago, she was joined by Herbert for a while too. I'll be
there if anyone wants to meet up.
Friday night at Sonar itself is a pretty good lineup: Jamie Lidell, Soft
Pink Truth, Laurent Garnier.
The Kompakt beach party is always fun on Sunday but I can't remember the
address - ask about, lots of people will be going.
Also heard a rumour that Jeff MIlls might be playing the Tresor party,
but cannot confirm that.

haha, get you!

actually I thought it was about music biz gangsters making sh*tloads of cash
selling dodgy music and lifestyles to ignorant clubbers, but I've never been so

I was surprised/saddened by how many people in Detroit asked me whether I'd
been to Ibiza. I was tempted to launch into rants about 'The White Isle', but
somehow I couldn't get the energy. My weirdest conversation by far was with the
bloke who came to change the tire on my car. For the record, that's not the
sort of thing that I'd normally get other people to do, but it was a hire care
and there was some kind of weird mechanism to release the spare tire that I
couldn't figure out, anyway...

Tyre Guy: So, where you from man?
Me: The UK
TG: The Ukraine?
Me: No, England.
TG: Oh Man, I LOVE England, I've always wanted to visit!
Me: Really, why's that?
TG: Phil Collins man! I love that guy, ever since susudio I been checking his
sh*t for real!
Me: Are you sure?
TG: Oh yes, he da man! Hey, you know him or sumink?
Me: No, not really, I think he's a tax exile in Barbados these days anyway.
Tyre Guy looked quite upset about this. I think he was hoping to pop round to
his house and say hello.

Well, she is the daughter of Mick Jagger and has grown up in and around
musicians I would guess that she's got some musical talent and can probably
tell if two tracks are out of synch with each other and which track is
slipping (better than lots of big name DJs). And from this article it
sounds like she has decent taste in music...

http://observer.guardian.co.uk/omm/recorddoctor/story/0,11109,1044069,00.html
Unsurprisingly, Jagger knows how to throw a good party. She warms up
generally with reggae, before making the switch to hip hop, but she's got
an ongoing project to introduce different kinds of music to the Ibiza
scene. 'Ibiza is obsessed with house music, and it's so single minded and
so drug fuelled... So next party, I want to play some blues, and some funk
and some rare groove and stuff. Maybe even some country.' She doesn't DJ,
she says, 'but I'm quite controlling, and so I guess I DJ in that other
people play the records, and I stand in the background and dictate. And I
do have a mild fantasy of becoming DJade.'

Jagger would takes tunes over lyrics every time ('Well, beats, at least')
but she doesn't understand the current crop of house music. 'I grew up with
house, but it was different then. More like soul music. It had lyrics. Now,
I don't even know how people buy house. How do you distinguish one record
from another?' She thinks the sexiest music imaginable is 'anything that
falls behind time. Like Prince, or old reggae. It's like slow sex, and
you're desperate for it to go faster.' Too much trance will spoil a night
for her, and Lauryn Hill's The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean
featuring Mary J. Blige's '911' will make her cry. 'It's very egotistical,
all that. You relate the music to you, to your relationships.' But now, she
says, music mainly reminds her of her kids. 'I'll be away and listen to pop
music, and it's like I'm there, seeing them do their routines in the living
room.'

I'm confused about this part though -
>"I guess I DJ in that other people play the records, and I stand in the
background and dictate."

So, she's not DJing? Is that what the "presents Jezebel" thing is about?
She's selecting tracks for someone else to play?

If her name wasn't Jagger she wouldn't be a "celeb" DJ - just a DJ with a
good selection of tracks. Frankly, if she's playing good tunes (and "too
much trance will spoil a night for her") she's ok in my book.

(313) Some slightly more coherent reactions to the best performance ever

2005-06-14 Thread Tristan Watkins
Argh. Been struggling to get this through...

So, I'm a little more capable of describing what about and why I liked the John
Arnold and Jeremy Ellis (Ayro) show on Sunday so much. First, the evironment
was flawless. Plastic People can get a bit cramped even on Sundays, but it was
just well-attended enough to create a properly enthused response, while still
leaving enough room to move. Also, some live performers I've seen there in the
past have shown a total disregard for normal volume restrictions, litterally
clearing the entire dance floor through pure obliviousness, but again that was
not the case on Sunday.

It probably helps to have seen Ayro live before to understand what's so unique
and compelling (I'm personally thinking of his main stage DEMF performance a
couple of years ago). Basically he just did everything in that show: starting
with live MPC into some live Moog, each suddenly becoming a loop before you
know it, then he'd run across the stage, play some live percussion, run back
and start singing. Later John Arnold, some singers and others joined him to
round things out, but he still managed to wear just about every hat.

So this time around it's billed as an MPC tag team (the Akai MPC is probably
the most popular sampler in the world and has 16 square pads to trigger
samples, particularly good for percussion). It started with Jeremy Ellis
delivering a blistering percussion solo, which came full circle to a thin
broken beat atop which John Arnold layered his own percussion solo to fill
things up, then off they went. John Arnold played live guitar (although some of
the stuff he was coming out with was processed enought to sound like the
craziest techno bass and/or synth lines I've heard). Ayro had two keyboards
with him, with which he would do visually blurring, mind-melting solos that
somehow terminated in a newly-formed synth line. He also sang really, really
well. Some of the newer Peurto Rican stuff really stood out but the whole thing
was great. Beyond all that, with so much to do at all times and so much ground
to cover, the whole thing tied together brilliantly, allowing each artist a bit
of spotlight when necessary, but generally working together without a hitch.
This was absolutely the next level of live performance: entirely created on the
spot (save a couple of missing vocalists on a couple of tracks), masterful
execution, complete pride, confidence and joy in the process and result. They
also managed to go through about 4 mics and an MPC meltdown without missing a
beat. Stunning.

other parties so I'll assume he was ok :P

He definitely had some good records in his crate. I've unintentionally
bought quite a few of his second hand records before.

The cool thing about Alex was that he didn't use his name, but had a dj
pseudonym. There was never any marketing bullsh*t to upsell him.

All good. I like the diversity on this list. We agree on the fundamentals
I'm sure. Debate is good.
I actually think the press in Detroit is excellent.

Yeah but you get your own tely - that is sooo important. ;) The food is
better. And you get socks and a toothbrush and so on. Qantas doesn't rattle.

You get good deals in May even if you book 5 days ahead. I've never paid
that! ;) It's expensive as it's good.

Me too. This year seems to mark a turning point. I think Kevin with his
pragmatic approach is a good guy, so I had faith. There seems to be more
positivity this year. But...

This is where I disagree. Sponsors come on board as they want publicity and
to look good, if there is negative publicity surrounding an event they won't
come on board. Sponsors are very sensitive to the media. The media is all
powerful in this regard. There is no denying it. I think far from coddling,
mismanagement should be exposed, but there has been a very negative bias at
times. No one wants to coddle anything, nor should they. One year they
quoted a 313 tourist in a piece who was extremely negative but not
representative of the people who travel to Detroit for the festival. That's
one case of an imbalance.

Whenever artists run their own events you're likely to have management
issues - I'm sure if Clear Channel ran it there would be no management
issues. But would it be credible? It's a tough one.
