I guess that's just one of those questions that I could try to answer all day with lots of reasoned argument but at the end of the day it's a subjective thing of just liking the music. As much as I like it though I must admit he never topped his debut Oxygene (I think it was his debut?) - it was pretty much downhill all the way from day one! Nevertheless check out Oxygene pt.2. To me it just shouts ELECTRONIC! FUTURE!. Made in 1976. Maybe it doesn't shout that to today's kids, maybe it sounds normal. But he did it back then. And then again it can't be that old hat when I hear that Ame track and instantly think of him and people are saying that's hot. -Original Message- From: David Powers [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] All the JMJ I ever heard sounded cheesy to me, but maybe I missed something that wasn't. RE: (313) Âme Fiori =RiR remixed!
Zoolookogie in 1984 is great. Essentially JMJ was utterly rinsed back in the day, as he was literally everywhere. If he hadn't been so big, he'd be considered a bit of a legend. Arpegiator is a magnificent record. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 19 April 2007 09:29 To: 313@Hyperreal.Org Subject: RE: (313) Âme Fiori =RiR remixed! Lovely mellow techy vibe on that new track Brian. Props for the provision of a remastered 'Intact' (the last Strand track) for free to previous purchasers too. UK people, as the dollar is so weak buying these tracks off the Harbonder site is stupidly cheap now (99c=50p!). Though I'd like to see .wavs for maybe $1.49 (Brian?). robin... If you fancy, you can hear it in its entirety on our myspace page for the next month or so. This and all other Strand material is available for download from the harbonder website. (313) odd that I should have to ask this...
..but as a Metro Detroit suburbanite, I don't know what to recommend in terms of clean/walking distance hotels for DEMF (I have friends who are asking). The wise thing, it seems to me, would be to ask people who have stayed in a few. So...what say ye? (other than the RenCen, which is obvious) Thanks. jeff

Atheneum in Greektown is my choice. Definitely walking distance to Hart Plaza(about 5 blocks), and very clean. A myriad of eating choices within 2 blocks, a strip bar for the perverts, casino (wouldn't step foot in it myself), and a parking structure if you have a car. You can park for free in the casino parking lot; just have to validate in the casino proper. Peace, Alex P.S. Re: (313) New Strand Release - Soleil
Thanks again for the compliments, Robin. We don't pay you nearly enough for that...I mean...you raise an excellent point. Buying a Strand song costs less than many checkout counter impulse items. They're less than some packs of gum and the flavor lasts a lot longer. As for the .wavs, after the ecommerce portion of the site was finished, it dawned on me that I shouldn't have been so fixated on mp3s and should've at least allowed for AACs and possibly uncompressed .wavs. That functionality is going to have to wait, however, because making the change isn't exactly cheap. A five minute, uncompressed, stereo audio file weighs in at about 55MB and the FLAC version is about 35MB, and you need special software (most are free) to decode them. I know some other services are offering uncompressed formats, but I wonder how well they sell given the large file sizes. This is really only a concern for people with dial-up and inadequate DSL connections, but if I'm not mistaken, the majority of people connect to the internet using the slower methods. RE: (313) New Strand Release - Soleil
Hi Brian. Taking aboard what you say in terms of logistics and feasibility but we can still say that in fact in Europe (I know I can't speak for regions outside of here) boradband 'penetration' (as it's called) outstrips dial-up usage by some majority which I forget. However I definitely know that's true. The other thing of course is that you are likely to have a particularly techy audience - definitely favouring higher band-width rather than lower and not having any qualms about larger file sizes if it means better quality. Imho. -Original Message- From: Brian Boyer [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 19 April 2007 14:03 To: robin Cc: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: (313) New Strand Release - Soleil Thanks again for the compliments, Robin. Re: (313) New Strand Release - Soleil
Ken, You're probably right about that and once we can afford to make the change, it wouldn't hurt to offer the option for those who want it. It's nice to know that the increased effort we've put into delivering well produced songs is matched by people's desire to have the best sounding version they can get their hands on. I think we're getting better with each release and one of our goals is to reach a level of quality that stands up to anything out there, regardless of budget or genre. (313) OT: Phonica and the dirt
Am I the only one to be pissed when supposedly new records arrive in the mail and then when you check them they're full of dust, fingerprints and even scratches?? I think it's the second time this happens to me with Phonica. Five out of the seven records I ordered where in poor VG condition, when they should be still sealed or mint... I mean, there's lot of arguments about Juno's 'superstore' kind of service and how you should favor smaller stores, but I've never had similar problems with them. The records come always pristine... _ Antonio

RE: (313) OT: Phonica and the dirt
I've only been to Phonica once while visiting and I concur - service was dreadful. One store clerk busy chatting with his friend while I stood at the counter with a stack of records waiting to be helped. Finally the A-hole got around to helping me but acted like I was putting him out. I don't understand how these places stay open. Last time I was in London I discovered If Music. Jean-Claude was superb in getting me to part with most of my money. Serious personal service from that man and he hit me up with some shtuff I still can't get over. All I had to do was sit at the bar while he pulled records and played them out -kept the evolution of choices changing and building on the last yes or no selection. In addition, he and his mate (also there shopping) were super friendly telling me stories about this and that. Worlds apart from Phonica. Re: (313) Arthur Russell doc in the works
Not really 313, but for me Arthur Russell is a personal idol. He was from Iowa, and a 'cellist, and I'm from Iowa, and a 'cellist. All of his music has an open-hearted romantic naivete that is very Iowa. His best works rise and fall like the Iowa prairie. Even when his tracks have an explicitly gay eroticism (Is it all over my face?, I want to see all my friends at once go bang!) they also have a second, giddy, sweet universal meaning, invoking the sublimely romantic without guile or cynicism. His fascination with an eternal beat meant he never really finished tracks himself -- all of the famous tracks were edits done by others. This is illustrated on the recent Springfields release -- the Russell version meanders, and the DFA remix is more finished. Neither is 'better' -- the DFA mix is focused and tightened into a lovely dance track, and the Russell version never really settles on being one thing to the exclusion of others. It sounds like whenever Russell started something it suggested so many possibilities he could never settle on one, and would try as many as would fit on the reel. That combination -- an incorruptible innocence coupled with a vision of infinite possibilities -- gives Russell's work a childlike sweetness, that persisted through personal disappointments and illness. He was a contemporary of and artistic fellow traveler to Keith Haring, whose work had some of the same feeling. I feel the loss of these artists as personally as I do the people I knew first hand who we lost to AIDS. Luckily, unlike most of my friends who are gone, they _were_ artists and left things behind for the rest of us. yes, he IS the man. he had a seminal label called Sounds Never Seen and also a small imprint called Elektronische Outboarding Cast on which he released a killer electro 12. IIRC correctly ha also released material on the now legendary roman label ACV (Robert Armani released on ACV as well...). Re: (313) New Strand Release - Soleil
I think the FLAC option is a pretty good one. Though most peoples software won't read it it can be easily converted and as it's lossless it's as good as a wav. It's a hard decision to make though (on the hosting end at least) but I can definitely hear when things are compressed, especially on a big system (even at 320k) robin...

Re: (313) New Strand Release - Soleil
I'm wondering how open people would be to the Apple Lossless codec? It produces about the same size file as a FLAC, suffers no loss in sound quality and, according to Apple, can be used with any current Quicktime application, the most popular of which I'd imagine is the Quicktime player, followed by iTunes. Somewhere between 70 and 80% of the portable music player market has an iPod, so things should be relatively painless for the majority of people. Thoughts? I think we're getting better with each release and one of our goals is to reach a level of quality that stands up to anything out there, regardless of budget or genre. However I definitely know that's true. The other thing of course is that you are likely to have a particularly techy audience - definitely favouring higher band-width rather than lower and not having any qualms about larger file sizes if it means better quality.
1. Apple's Lossless Codec is tied up with their DRM, and it's closed source. 2. There aren't any players aside from ITunes and Quicktime that can play Apple Lossless 3. Quicktime is fvkking awful on PCs and nonexistant on any Linux/Unix system. Yes I know there are codecs for MPlayer, but it's fiddly to set up and Apple keeps changing the target. 4. If you want to generate the Apple lossless files, you have to pay Apple for software to do it. 1. Flac is open source and runs everywhere. 2. Flac is DRM-free. 3. Flac is free. 4. Flac is fast. 5. There's an information-theoretical limit to how well you can losslessly compress audio files, and Flac is close enough to that limit, anything 'better' is only better by a very small margin. (313) ot: dj pinch / techno+dubstep
anyone catch that dj pinch set on mary anne hobbs? (if not, it's up on themixingbowl) interesting sound, and i like the mixed up rhythms. i'd certainly love to hear someone play this style on a proper rig. seems like there's something going on in this little area right now, with the sleeparchive dubstep release, the villalobos remix on skull disco, etc... there was a also cool Kano mix last year that had some ruff raga stuff mixed with LFO, etc.
