RE: (313) Octave One at Berghain, Berlin this Saturday night
thanks again to francis and all others for advice, it's always an adventure. I normally don't tolerate club nonsense, but this is O1 and KMS and it is, after all, Berghain. So I'll do the best I can. "Your name's not down, you're not on the list...!" fh
Re: (313) so where do you buy your music (again!)?
Vinyl - a number of local shops but it's never really for techno/house these days there isn't a single decent shop in town. the one remaining "dance" music shop deals mostly online so even if you go into the shop the selection is crap and most of it isn't even out for you to browse and he makes a big deal out of going into his stock to retrieve something for you in person he's a total pain in the arse so I don't bother buying from him at all plenty of second hand shops and antique malls and such to browse for the funk & soul records one really good shop for more indie rock - and I've found a few IDM type things and ambient/experimental records there as well I also buy on ebay - it's still worth it one of the local shops that closed up their brick & mortar have a really basic online catalogue that I've found a few older house/techno 12"/LPs I've been selling a number of items via discogs myself - haven't shopped there at all yet for digital - Juno mostly but it depends on what I'm looking for most of my purchases have the 3 dimensional shape MEK

Re: (313) so where do you buy your music (again!)?
Have you ever tried : http://www.zero-inch.com They have a nice selection that suits 313ers tastes i think. I like their listening preview system, which at last is close to a browsing experience through a vinyl in a record shop. And yes, i also really love the Deadbeat's "Roots and Wire" album, it has a real homogenous approach and progressive development. - K* - Original Message - From: "David Armin-Parcells" Cc: "'313'" <313@hyperreal.org> Sent: Friday, December 12, 2008 5:37 PM Subject: Re: (313) so where do you buy your music (again!)? > Second the e-music > lots of 313 related labels both old and new and lots of other goodies > the only problem I have with e-music is that it is subscription based > with a use it or lose it policy. Second the e-music lots of 313 related labels both old and new and lots of other goodies the only problem I have with e-music is that it is subscription based with a use it or lose it policy. One of the biggest pluses is that once you have downloaded something, you may download it again as many times as you like. Kind of like having a permanent backup. I also got the Deadbeat album there and love love love it. Fantastic dub-tech feel a la Rhythm and Sound. I also use Traxsource occasionally for house David Max & Mark wrote: These days i am pretty much on e-music, where i got the new deadbeat album ''roots & wire'' witch is pretty good indeed. I rarely get into anything dubby, but this has such nice techno recording quality. Really impressive.

Seconded on Thinner. I still remember the 'Simulcraic Wonderland' LP by Ben Businovski of a few years ago. Especially 'Ceiling Fan'. Still. I do start getting wistful about mp3 labels if I like their wares! RE: (313) Octave One at Berghain, Berlin this Saturday night
Fred >random old guy This will probably help - I'm an old guy and I don't think it's done me any harm there. Think the door peepz there want as mixed and interesting a crowd as possible. Right now that probably means not another late 20s Brit flown in from London to the new Prague for the weekend. I heard from a stateside friend that if the doorguys talk to him he emphasises he's not a Brit (not a good calling card at Berlin doors now). (Unlike me) you probably don't have to worry about being too deranged when you get to the door as that might not fly well either. Think I heard second hand one of the guys say they're on the lookout for people who are not being genuine in some way (not much help). (Depending on what time O1 are on) I think it's probably easier to get in after the queue dies down, which I imagine is after 7am? (can more knowledgeable headz give an accurate figure for this?). >(and when, I don't want to wait around 6 hours for the guys to play) The running order is usually posted on Berghain's MySpace a day or 2 before. > Don't have a hotel yet but I'll be making those arrangements Friday. Re: (313) Octave One at Berghain, Berlin this Saturday night
Forgot to send my reply to the list: Hi Fred, Berghain puts the set times up on their myspace. Here you go: 24:00 h – 5:00 h Norman Nodge 5:00 h – 6:00 h Octave One live 6:00 h – 8:00 h Kevin Sounderson 8:00 h – ende Andre Galluzzi Panorama Bar "Made To Play" from 12 til 12. 24:00 h – 6:00 h Tristan Da Cunha & Adam Shelton 6:00 h – 9:00 h Jesse Rose 9:00 h – 12:00 h Claude Von Stroke 12:00 h – 15:00 h Cassy 15:00 h – 18:00 h Radio Slave 18:00 h – 21:00 h James Holden 21:00 h – ende Steffi Berghain looks very strong that night. Perfect techno club. Panoramabar rather wretched until midday, but should have a nice atmosphere anyway (it tends to) so worth popping your head in. In terms of getting in, I've never had any issue. Going by yourself is an advantage. Learn the German for 'Just me', or 'One', as the bouncer may ask you "How many are going in?". Just look serious in the queue, don't speak English, and don't dick around, and you should be fine. The bouncers are all middle aged gay men, as is the core Ostgut crowd, so they're far from ageist. It's a much, much older crowd than in Fabric (panoramabar is younger, same entry system, but very marked separation inside). Since it's Berghain's birthday, and Berghain is the gay part of the club, they may be stricter on the door -- but as a single male, you should be the beneficiary of this. Having said all this, you're more likely to get turned away if you go during peak queuing time (roughly 2-7). Remember in Berlin once you've paid, you get a stamp allowing you access to the club any time, so going at 12, getting a stamp, and coming back a few hours later is always an option. Second-hand [but well informed] advice: Dress as if you aim to make a small impression *and* sweat and have fun - although of course you'll need a coat whilst you're waiting to get in! Smile. Don't appear to be freaked by the freaks! :) As you know, this is perhaps the quintessential metropolis, and to a large extent people are free to be what they want, especially at night, and it being Berlin, more than the average number of people in a normal Western city, seem to take up that offer! Be sober.
