Re: (313) FW: Environ Newsletter

2004-05-14 Thread Ana Dane

fw: from env

Hi 313:

I was forwarded the 313 comments on our newsletter's promo text for the new
Metro Area record. I wanted to respond. The last thing I'd want is people
thinking we don't know our place, and anyway, some interesting issues came
up.

First, it should be noted that a promo sheet is not a serious document. It's
basically something distributors use to spit their gum out in as they listen
to the 12 it comes with. Nonetheless, nowhere in ours was it said that
Metro Area lay claim to a sound beyond its own - and to be fair, I think
it's well within an group's rights to claim its own music. We work
extremely hard to try and make ours distinctive and something that will last.

I think the flat rejection by many distributors of our first record (hatched
in 1998 - Atmosphrique) has a lot to do with our unfavorable perception
of recent productions that people compare to ours. When we started MA, with
rare exception, it was not normal to talk about the 80s RB or boogie in
most circles (certainly techno and house). Disco seemed to exist purely to
be filtered, cut up and 909-ized. Even older people into Garage and
classics had a very strict cannon they adhered to.

I remember a major distributor, rejecting our record, asked what was up
with the disgusting label (neon pink and green). We sent our first stuff
to a few favorite classics DJs at NYC's KISS-FM to no response (a few
monthsago, a bootleg of our track is being played on the station during prime
time). Very few shops showed support. While the next two records weren't
as tough, but still were variations on the Atmosphrique theme until our
fourth record in 2001.

These early experiences inform my perception of so-called similar records
today: it's not a real struggle to make or sell them today since the sound
and influences are now accepted. If anything, it's considered passé or
institutionalized due to overexposure by the homage records. A recent
interview in Keep On magazine with Nick the Record crystallized it for me
when he said I love Metro Area, but they seem to just be repeating
themselves. And I thought gee, we haven't put out a 12 in over two
years!

I guess the point is: isn't asking about decent Metro Area ripoffs or
decent (insert name here) ripoffs indicative of a general musical problem?
This is the 313 list - so people should remember all the decent Basic
Channel ripoffs or decent DBX ripoffs of the 90s. Was that musical
advancement? Did that help precipitate exciting new music in general? Were
those records a respectful homage?

You can guess my opinion! (Although I do think we were a pretty good
BALIHU ripoff!)

Curious to know if anyone can name and shame some of these!
Plus, are there any decent Metro Area rip-offs out there?
Kerrier District springs to mind, but it struck me as a respectful homage,
rather than a rip-off.

You know what, I nearly asked the same Q yesterday.

I guess there's a few, and it's all a matter of opinion. I can't add to
Putsch/Kerrier though.
Someone said to me recently that they really like a couple of the Kerrier
District tracks - more so than the Metro Area stuff. (which I didnt agree
with).

But, and here's the thing. Can Metro Area really lay 'claim' to that sound?

Given, they were the first to update stuff in that manner, but I wouldn't
have said it was a 'new' sound, there's alot of records from the early 80's
that sound a lot like Metro Area in my opinion. David Keaton's Space
Control on Roulette sounds very Metro Area I think. There's flippin loads,
I can't even think of them off the top of my head, I'll have to look
through my records. I dunno, electronic boogie records are what I call 'em.

Having said that, I do think Metro Area is a very ace project. I'd like to
see it go further now, I reckon vocals and song stuff would go brilliantly
like this, and those two would make pretty great producers of that sort of
stuff I think.

Blah.

Alex

(313) FW: Environ Newsletter - metro area 5!

2004-05-13 Thread Ana Dane

Welcome to the eighth edition of the Environ Newsletter.
Feel free to forward this to friends/label/press/anywhere.

ENV019 METRO AREA 5 IN SHOPS!

That's right! The new Metro Area 5 (featuring the tracks Nerves and
Proton Candy, each spread thick and loud across a 45-RPM side) should be

your favorite shop now or in the next few days! Here's some pap our promo

mascot W. Knocka wrote about it (grain of salt, please):

It's been more than two and a half years since Metro Area last shook up
 the
scene with a 12 record, Metro Area 4, featuring 'MIURA' - a cult classic
that continues to cross over into DJ crates across the musical spectrum.
It's been over one and a half years since Metro Area released their
much-propped debut album. In the meantime, MA's sound was jacked by
 myriad
producers for so-called original productions and bootlegs abounded.

Rejecting the hype that surrounded their album, the duo of Morgan Geist
 and
Darshan Jesrani quietly pondered their next move. They were eager to get
back to the their favorite format, the 12 record, where the quality and
effect of the music on DJs, dancers and listeners (rather than the number
 of
magazine reviews) is the deciding factor between success and failure.

METRO AREA 5, the newest installment in Metro Area's 12 series, is the
result. This release finds the duo continuing on their quest for fresh
sounds and timeless production, expanding their palette while retaining
 the
emotional spirit of their first releases.

'Nerves' is a suspenseful, driving piece with an irresistible groove
 soaked
in frantic Latin percussion and fierce drums. Angular synthetic textures
trade off aggressively, finally arriving at a gorgeous and melancholic
destination awash in piano, strings and horns. 'Proton Candy' is just as
much of a floor mover with its super-tight electric bassline, but is more
playful in its approach, conjuring up dreams of teenage roller rinks
crossbred with hardcore disco and bubblegum RB. It's an intoxicating
cocktail that will leave you wanting to hear it (and dance to it) over and

 over again.

Don't settle for a soulless clone; listen to the originals. Check out
METRO AREA 5 and rediscover what real, HONEST dance music innovation is
 all
 about!

 ENVIRON STORE RESTOCK ACTION!

Mucho thanks for the killer support! It's because of you that we have
 those
annoying words on order next to all the the vinyl in our store!

But never fear, restocks will be there next week:

 ENVUN03 Unclassics #2 (Purple Flash)
ENV018 Jersey Devil Social Club EP

We'll also a number of the new Metro Area 5 in case you don't have a good
local shop to grab it at.

A few T-shirts are left. These are the last of what we have, so grab 'em
 if
you want 'em. New T-shirt designs coming soon!

 UPCOMING RELEASES!

Fall is our favorite season. So while everyone is kicking it at the
 beaches
this summer, you know we'll be cooped up in the lab cooking up some killer

releases for you! Our 20th Environ vinyl release looks like it's shaping
 up
to be a collection of rare Environ tracks on doublepack. There will also
 be
new 12s from Kelley Polar Quartet, Morgan Geist and the Unclassics
 series,
plus some represses. Finally, we will be kicking the out Unclassics CD
 mix
compilation featuring some exclusive oldies not included in the 12 series

and more wonderful packaging from graphic designer Julian Morey.

 That's all for now!
HAVE A HEALTHY AND PEACEFUL SUMMER!

as for other nyc events, try the nyhappenings list on yahoo groups. it's not
strictly electronic music events, but it does include them and is
ridiculously more comprehensive than alot of other music listings out there.
plus it's run by new york's most social grump ever- this guy seriously goes
to 3-4 music events every night. if he doesn't know about an event, someone
on the list will.

Welcome to the sixth edition of the Environ Newsletter.
Feel free to forward this to friends/label/press/anywhere.

UNCLASSICS #3 OUT THIS WEEK!

Out next week, a new UNCLASSICS! This time it's a 1984 Canadian disco jam
called We Can Make It by PURPLE FLASH. This is the very same producer who
was behind Pluton The Humanoids (a favorite on both I-F's Mixed Up In The
Hague Vol. 1 and Unclassics #2)! An uptempo electronic workout with an
addictive electric piano line and synth string motif that is impossible to
get out of your head once you hear it, We Can Make It has featured as a
secret weapon in the arsenal of discriminating digger-DJs for years. And
guess what? It's backed with the remix debut of DARSHAN JESRANI of METRO
AREA! His Lavender Lamp remix stretches it out and strips things down,
adding live bass and making the most of the electronic percussion from the
original version. Don't sleep! This release is available in our online
store right now, too!

ENVIRON METRO AREA T-SHIRTS!

Thanks to the help of GENERIC COSTUME, we have some very simple and stylish
T-SHIRTS coming out! They will be in the Environ online store
(http://www.environrecords.com) within the next week or so. The two styles
are black with white Environ logo and heather grey with neon-orange Metro
Area logo. Hot stuff! Sizes are medium and large, and the bodies are
heavy-duty American Apparel all-cotton shirts. Somewhat limited quantities,
so get 'em while they're hot!

NEXT RELEASE: JERSEY DEVIL SOCIAL CLUB!

The mysterious, italo/horror/disco/industrial project (it's hard to
classify!) is mastered and will be out at the end of March. With Italo
compilations all over the place, we are hoping the time is finally right for
this record to drop. If not, we'll sell about 5 copies...it's pretty
strange stuff. Now that it's gotten out through various channels that
Environ was trying to license 1979's BLACK DEVIL LP, maybe it will help
people understand the context of this EP. Or
not...

UPCOMING UNCLASSICS!

A low-slung Belgian disco groover from '79 backed by a rare side project
track from a NYC producer who had a hit on West End Records in the late
'70s. After that, a lesser-known project from an Italo hero and some other
goodies. The series will culminate in an Unclassics mix CD including
exclusives not found on the 12 series.

That's it for this time around!

Thanks for your support,

(313) Oberlin/melodiez + memoriez

2002-10-14 Thread Ana Dane
Fwd: from morgan geist ([EMAIL PROTECTED]):

I received these messages forwarded in the digest but can't seem to send a
mail to 313. Even Mr. Sicko called this morning - it's becoming a trip down
memory lane ;) I wanted to add some notes...

There were actually a bunch of great DJs and producers there. Partly due
to
the electronic music program at the Conservatory (TIMARA - technology in
 music and related arts).

During my time at Oberlin, I must say that the Conservatory did NOTHING to
encourage college kids (like me) to take courses there. Oberlin (even if
you had financial aid like friends had) was expensive, too - you'd think
they'd allow or encourage a little cross-fertilization for all the loot
they charged. The TIMARA department didn't do crap for innovative dance
music while I was there except thwart it. In fact before
electronica/dance was OK'd (for a few years, at least) as the soundtrack
to N. American youth culture advertising, I'd venture to guess it was
neglected at most schools except for few lucky ones that happened to be
located in dance music cities.

When I was there we basically had a couple different influences:
Detroit influenced people like Morgan, Kym and Dave and a few others.
Chicago influenced the West Coast house DJs who found Chicago house to
be
 incredible.

Again I must respectfully add/amend - with the exception of a number of
people I can count on one hand (and maybe those you mentioned) barely anyone
was interested in Detroit or Chicago for most of my stay there. Only what
was then considered to be progressive house got any play, maybe some
obvious vocal tracks. A typical Oberlin 'Sco (the college disco) memory for
me is riding some Kraftwerk over DJ Funk, Dan Selzer (Environ designer)
working a sweat with the lightboard...then maybe THREE people begrudgingly
dancing on the floor! It was lame.

However I must prop two Oberlin things:

1) The radio station. Even though dance music got very little support, we
were free to play it if we got shows, and stuff like DBX's Silicon Ghetto
would come in the Net record pool box! I saw a post from Ironman, who
turned me on to great music including life-changing stuff like the whole
Computer World album (I only knew Electric Cafe and Numbers) and
Yellow Magic Orchestra and we did some great shows that no one listened
to!
Calling Mike Banks from the station phone was a highlight too. Anyone
reading this and in college now - go get yourself a radio show!

2) The Coop Bookstore, 1991-1994. The record area was staffed by people
who really knew and supported dance music. It was just a couple people (Todd
Hutlock comes to mind) but I'm quite sure it was the only bookstore in the
country where you could find Applied Rhythmic Technology CDs in the
racks and Red Planet and Transmat records in the vinyl bin! Plus since
almost
no one gave a s*** about the music at Oberlin, the records would fail to sell
and eventually get reduced to something that better fit the student
budget!

Oh yeah - school had internet access (read: access to 313, Reverb, [EMAIL
PROTECTED]
Sato,etc!).

-mg

PS: I'm not ashamed of or blackmailable by my early recordings at all
-that's a pretty bizarre idea to me, actually. Those are some great
memories - and even the most cringe-worthy moments metamorphose into
entertainment years later (see GHEE - J.T. seems to enjoy outing me on
this list!)

BTW the tapes referred to by Kent Williams were called FUSION and put out
by Charles Noel I believe...

[313] metro area show

2002-05-08 Thread Ana Dane
just wanted to give an update on what happened at the MA london show. first
off, sorry to anyone who left after the show stopped initially- the audio
interface (828) decided to die completely right in the middle of the first
track. it was totally mysterious and obviously completely unexpected...about
an hour later, standing outside the club, trying to figure out whether there
was any way the show could still happen, darshan and some of the people who
were putting on the night came trotting around the corner, 828 in tow- it
turns out that lady miss keir of dee-lite fame(!), who happened to be close
by, had one in her studio and was gracious enough to lend it. it was a
miracle that one turned up close to 2am!

it was great to see such a receptive, vocal crowd and hopefully the people
who stayed enjoyed the show in its entirety. let this be an example of all
the work that still goes on behind a laptop live show...i honestly think
organzing a small orchestra of dyslexic chimpanzees would have been easier
than putting that set together.

Swimming.

Went to see Metro Area at Plastic People but it didn't all go according to
plan. For a start, being bank holiday weekend, it was rammed. Having all
the
gear set up in the middle of the dancefloor as an unfortunate necessity, I
suppose (there's nowhere else), but you couldn't dance/move on the
dancefloor, and at points hardly breathe. MA came on at about 1am, but only
played half a track before something crashed. By 2am they still hadn't
started again and I was feeling ill so headed home. Only to discover froma
friend the next day most folk had left not long after and when Metro Area
restarted their storming set, everything was hunky dory. Damn :) When I
sang
my cat meowing version of Metro Area 1 down the phone (I sing it to my cat
quite a bit), he told me they played that one last and it was ace. No

see the place so packed. unfortunately, the new york curse of no-dancing was
in effect, as almost everyone was just standing around. maybe they didn't
want to get sweat on their designer clothes. if you're in the area, be sure
and check out the next round on april 11, at APT.

also, got some new stuff from dL that is well worth seeking out. the funky
italo style macho cat garage - muffler strut was excellent, and stinkworx -
todas las noches is a bit more mellow but still a nice listen.

   Hi all,

Some friends and I are making a trip to New York
(from Detroit) for a nice 4 day vacation and I was
wondering if any of you can throw some recommended
spots my way. I picked up a couple of tickets to go
see Hawtin on the 2nd and as of now that seems to be
the only plan (aside from record shopping). Any help
will come appreciated.

2001-09-14 Thread Ana Dane

this is a message from new york- please, please continue to donate blood
and/or money to the red cross. you cannot imagine what it is like here. and
everyone MUST keep in mind that a military retaliation that involves more
killing is so disgustingly wrong. i walked home from work on tuesday, and i
saw people rushing uptown with masks on, and men crying in the streets.
traffic stopped dead, everyone trying to get out of manhattan. people
stopping in their tracks and looking terrified, up at the sky, when we first
heard the fighter jets that were flying around. as i got closer and closer
to downtown, where i needed to go to try and get home to brooklyn, the
traffic disappeared and the acrid smell of burning increased. i walked
straight southward, with the huge plume of gray and black smoke that blocked
out the sun in my sight, and the tears just falling out of my eyes. as i got
closer to lower manhattan, there were emergency vehicles driving out of the
site that streamed ash and shards of metal behind them as they raced away,
and police everywhere. i joined the huge crowd that was walking over the
manhattan bridge, and i looked over my right shoulder at the black smoke
plumes that rising out amongst the buildings. the smoke rose up, over the
east river, and into brooklyn, and as i continued to walk closer to home,
there were burnt bits of paper and ash falling so lightly onto the street.
no one should have to see their city on fire.

every day that goes by, i keep hoping for it to go faster and faster because
i think i will feel better the next day. but i don't. i keep thinking what i
would do, what i would sacrifice if i could turn back time a week and have
this never happen, but it makes no difference. new york will never, ever be
the same. the heavy feeling of grief does not dissipate. we cannot escape
from thinking about the death and destruction here. it is constantly in
front of us, so we don't have the luxury to sit back and discuss retaliation
and war. if everyone could witness what has become of this city, they
wouldn't even be considering bringing such horrors upon any other place on
earth.

it is encouraging to see support for peace from listmembers all over the
world. please keep it up.

[313] NYC last night...

2001-07-06 Thread ana dane

saw dj harvey at shine. go see him if you get the chance...he played some
good music (getting to dance with danny wang to balihu 008 was one of my
favorite parts of the evening) and i was pleasantly surprised by the club.
it was nice to see people in ny actually enjoying themselves and dancing
instead of just standing around and checking out everyone else's shoes.
although that can be fun, too.

[313] son of DEMF reviews.

2001-05-31 Thread ana dane

bringing up the rear on the demf review front:

quite a weekend. it was a mix of good music and a pretty depressing,
drugged-out, 15-year-old raver crowd. i guess i anticipated that more of
the people would be there because they wanted to hear the specific
artists...unfortunately i got the feeling that if it were a giant trance
music festival, 90% of the crowd would still be there.

but all cynicism aside, the highlights were finding suburban knight's art
of stalking minutes after walking into record time on friday, the 7th
city party on saturday night, the planet e one on sunday, and inner city
on monday. being such a misanthrope i felt like the afterparties were
better than alot of the festival itself- less overwhelming, fewer guys
with hemp necklaces and glowsticks screaming WO! YEAH!!, and nice
dark and dry rooms. dancing amongst 313-ers at kdj's live set at the
planet e party was one of the nicest music moments i have experienced in a
long long time. what WAS that last track he played?

other than the music, seeing detroit for the first time was incredible. it
was so strangely beautiful...it's been kind of depressing to come back
to normal life here in new york, but looking down at all the scratches on
my knees from crawling under the fence to walk around in the old train
station brings something back. this past weekend was the kind that is
instantly burned into the fond memories section of my brain...i can't
think of any other way to describe it.

to those i met and re-met: rob, dan sicko, teep, macqueen, james duncan
and jooner, technotourists en massee- hans, otto, and wibo, titonton,
minto and j, and a whole slew of other 313ers... it was wonderful to
see all of you.

and hey if anyone got the number of that hot furry tiger man with the
orange lampshade on his head please send it to me pronto.

this is going on tonight, no cover charge. there's no excuse NOT to go if
you're in the area. the music will be good old techno, house, and dance
disco classics...the club supposedly has a very nice dance floor and
plenty of space as well (scarse in these parts).

new DANIEL WANG on ENVIRON

i tried to send this to the list last week, but i

Forwarded message:

We at Environ are extremely proud to present Daniel
Wang's new CD album, IDEALISM (ENVCD001) - a deep
and gorgeous labor of love that will hypediehard
Daniel Wang and Balihu fans and undoubtedly open up a
new album-oriented audience to his work.

This tight collection manages to sum up his sonic
evolution while offering aglimpse into the future with
his new tracks and production style. Opening up with
the spectacular vocoded intro of Let's Go To Mars,
the album stays in touch with Daniel's fascination
with the dancefloor and dubbed-out funk,
disco, techno and jazz. Rare tracks like Rings of
Saturn (only 150 whitelabels were distributed to DJs)
and brand-new gems such as Ambiguity showcase the
spaced, sweaty pulses that made his 12s into club
DJ's crateclassics. On the flip, the acid-reggae epic
Islands or his sci-fi Theremin cover of jazz
standard Misty makes this an ideal listening album.

Coming on like Moroder, disco, house and modern
electronica going 12 rounds at the Paradise Garage.
-Jockey Slut

Simultaneously retro and innovative...evokes Noel
Coward and Cole Porter sipping cocktails on another
planet.

Humorous and delightful fantasies of disco fever with
synthesizers and a Theremin.

you've got the group name correct.
it's on kit clayton's orthlorng musork

snauses and mallards. andrew duke

(i'm pretty sure i butchered the name, but...) what's this kit

you should definitely check it out. as far as i know there are two people
behind it, but neither of them kit clayton. it's sort of a schitzophrenic
musical experience, i guess it would fit in the experimental category more
than any other. but it avoids the boring esoteric side of experimental
music, as it still has plenty of beats. overall it is a really interesting
record with wonderful cover art...my favorite is track 5 - shithole.

(313) nyc - dan bell

2000-02-21 Thread Ana Dane

ah. another excellent night at the flamingo east in new york. dan bell
played a great for-the-most-part techno set, but the best moments for me
were hearing tracks by metro area, loose joints, and eddy grant nice and
loud. the crowd was a bit strange, but at least everyone was dancing and
into the music.

again, for any nyc area people who feel like there is hardly ever a
quality 313-related event here, go to this night. i don't have the lineup
right in front of me, but next saturday is boo williams, and rob hood and
shake will be out in march sometime. thanks again to dan bell and
foundation for organizing this night.

definitely recommended if you don't have all the balihu records, or
just want a bunch of it on a cd.
