Re: Keep it real (and on topic)
Yea I'm out, too. Signal/Noise ratio has not been worth slugging through dumpster fire threads for a while now. Have fun, cheers, everybody. -Arturo
This is a Techno list, right?
Request for mods to clamp down on unrelated bullshit; there's often little enough activity on here before having to wade through whatever current dumpster-fire is going on. Thanks

Movement 2019 Lineup
Paxahau has shit the bed on their lineups plenty of years, but I think this year is pretty solid as far as festival lineups can go. You could do way worse. Not sure if I'll be there (at least at the festival) but a few of those names worth your price of admission if you haven't seen em in a few years. -Arturo
[A] 17: Kuri Kondrak
Lots of new release Techno in this mix from Seattle's Kuri Kondrak, who I'm sure many of you might know, and who has played all up and down the West coast forever. Great selections as always from 90s through to fresh jams. -Arturo http://www.art-and-artifice.com/blog/ Morphology – Farthest Regions [Firescope] Dopplereffekt – Mitosis [Leisure System] No Moon – Bathtub Dub [Mechatronica] 214 – Keep Right [CPU] Shiver – Illogical [Shiver] Titonton Duvante – Extrapolation (Dan Curtin’s Rextrapolation Part 2) [Metamorphic] Russell Butler – No New Neighbors [Left Hand Path] Flora FM – Melon Squabbles [TerraFirm] Ex-Terrestrial – Insect Reject [Magic Wire] Stephen Lopkin – Friday’s At Pure [MOS Deep] Planetary Assault System – Booster [Peacefrog] Jordan GCZ – Pinball Lizard [Rush Hour] E Davd – Hearbeat/Hyperdrive [X-Kalay] Hunee – Rare Silk [W.T. [A] 16: Epistrophe Smith
Happy to share a great live hardware set from one of our 313 list members, Epistrophe Smith! http://www.art-and-artifice.com/blog/2019/1/3/16-epistrophe-smith Was great to have him contribute an improvised set, and we look forward to sharing more great music this year! -Arturo
[A] Mix: Kiddo
Back to a firmer Techno footing after last month's ambient, a nice mix from Chicgao's Kiddo! She's great and has been playing all over the States for many years. She also happens to start with my favorite Baxter cut, so that's a bonus. http://www.art-and-artifice.com/blog/2018/12/12/15-kiddo We feel like we're on a bit of a roll lately with our last mix getting a pretty wide circulation and also with some great material coming in. Thanks for everyone's support and looking forward to sharing lots of music in the New Year. -Arturo As always reach out if you think you'd be a good fit or know someone with some music to share!
Re: Mad Mike Tresor interview
List Moderators need to come down quickly and without mercy on this kind of bullshit with warning and bans, plenty of us way past annoyed at uncontroversial threads being consistently hijacked. Keep it on topic, or start your own thread, or take it private and far far away. Peace -Arturo
Ambient Mix, and calling for more Techno, Etc.
Hey folks, been a minute but our mix site is back up and running: http://www.art-and-artifice.com/blog/2018/11/17/guest-mix-for-beyond-below Lots of 70s and 80s ambient and experimental business here, if you are into that sort of thing. RA copped it as one of their "best mixes for November," but our mileage and opinions on what RA thinks about anything vary, of course :P More to the point we are getting back into Techno for the site so if you've got the bug to record some jams please reach out, we are always looking for submissions. We've got some good Techno from Chicago's Kiddo up soon, recorded from a great set in Buffalo recently, will be up in a few days. Thanks! -Arturo
Re: New subscribers?
Welcome aboard, Matt! This is actually the busiest the listserv has been in forever. For good or bad :P All it takes is RA wankers ripping off Andrew Duke to get the posts flowing. -Arturo

Re: video on 10 years of No Way Back
Def haven't been around the block as long as many of you but lots of good times for that series; exceptional talent all around on all parts of the events. Before it was 'No Way Back' it was most of the same crew/venue for "Cannonball Run" for each DEMF, right? Memory is hazy on a few of thoseJesus that was already like 15 years ago, yikes. -Arturo

Re: Beyond the sixth/seventh/eight wave?
Juno's suggestions confirmed generally weak imo, something about that whole site just rubs me the wrong way, like beatport. It's funny to me we have a million different places on the internet to supposedly connect and share good music in a better way, but still nothing beats just talking to someone whose taste you respect and seeing what they are into. Just reading a few friend's best of year lists gets more mileage from me than 50 spam mails from Juno shotgunning whatever is coming off their conveyor belt -Art "I for one love discogs in all its imperfection. The new release listings for artists in yr collection is nice when you've been away for a while. Besides 'discover function' algorithms always vary, juno's always feels a bit weak but Rushhour and Hhv.de are good. Plus its nice to surf outta discogs too, maybe some like myspace sprawl or something, the whole web should be branching + connecting.. No pleasing some people. ;-P C"
Re: Techno 2017
Most of my good shit this year was all re-issues of older stuff, and I somehow skipped most of the club oriented material and got a lot of soundscape/ambient/mood type of business. Pregnant wife and new babies meant not a lot of time for being out... I'll second the Vatican Shadow; for my money just about everything Dominick Fernow and the entire Hospital Productions label touch has been gold for me, if usually a bit // wrists 'im dark and moody every day all day drone noise' for some tastes. I'd strongly recommend any of his 'Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement' releases as well if you are more into the more soundscape side of things. Some of my favs this year: Deathprod - Treetop Drive (finally pressed) Vatican Shadow - Luxor Necropolitics Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement - bunch of reissues Sarah Davachi - All My Circles Run Akira Rabelais - Spellewauerynsherde Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe - Levitation Praxis Pt 4 Midori Takada – Through The Looking Glass (Finally got repressed!) -Arturo BTW we are getting the mix site back into production mode so if anyone out there looking to work with us and share/make some mixes for new episodes drop me a line! http://www.art-and-artifice.com/

I'd echo Lisa's comments, Doc Sleep is wonderful and her label really is firing on all cylinders with just about every release they are putting out. [Jacktone] Very good stuff from Experimental Housewife as well. Also Lisa of course, duh. -Arturo
A [10]: Music's Got Me Keepin' On: A Tribute to Prelude
Sorry for all of the replies to last post, will keep this on topic. Had a few folks interested in some of our label mixes, we had a great guy from Chicago make us a mix of all Prelude records. Not so much Techno related, but some of this might be up a few of your alleys. Cheers, -Art We'll probably try and do a few more like this soon, in a Techno oriented direction. We are pleased as punch to share with you all a great mix from Chicago's SoundInBetween, spotlighting choice cuts from Prelude's magnificent catalog. Prelude [1976-1986] is one of those special record labels at the right time and place, straddling the end of disco and riding straight through towards boogie gold, moving countless bodies in the process. Lots of heat on this one, enjoy! http://www.art-and-artifice.com/blog/2016/9/19/10-musics- got-me-keepin-on-a-tribute-to-prelude

An interesting topic. I can't think of any good reason for a European male to otherise themselves and present as a minority woman. Why? This is exoticizing the other, plain and simple. There is already a dearth of actual women and minorities in the music game, the last thing we need is dudes pretending to be them. I'm sure he's a super nice guy, but it's beside the point. Movement Post Mortem
Had a great time this year, although I seem to have missed quite a few people over a few days I'd have liked to hang out with/listened to! TV Lounge for the Smartbar takeover Friday, Tresor 25th on Saturday and "Club Toilet" which was a sweaty dirty fun mess, and a bit of IT shenanigans on Sunday leading into Industry Brunch. Music was great all around, and perhaps my just getting older but it seemed the afterparty crowds at the events I was at mostly seemed a great group, and I interestingly saw people keeping cell phone nonsense to a minimum (which I always find annoying, seeing 100 lit up screens in a darkened space). A lot of people put in long work to prepare and decorate spaces and it showed, especially the IT space at Tangent Gallery. -Arturo

Movement 2016
Hey folks, Was all set to fly to Mutek but had a sudden change of heart and am now making it back to Detroit for festival shenanigans for the first time in many years, looking to be a great weekend. I'm probably going to skip most of the festival proper and just hit up the always excellent evening parties. Right now I'm looking at the Tresor event, supporting my Chi people at the TV Lounge SmartBar evening, and the Sunday No Way Back event. Also really trying to swing by Soul Skate, which is always super fun. You all have any good recs for other events to squeeze in during the day or evening around town? Old Miami morning stuff is kind of a shit-show the last few years, am I right? I remember it being a fun thing, and then suddenly it was a line-around-the-block crowded thing? -Arturo Hope to see a few of you!

[Art & Artifice] Episode 5
Hey 313ers! Very excited to share our newest mix with everyone, from one of our own long time list members, rktik aka Ronny Pries! If you don't know Ronnie, he's in Hamburg, Germany and a long time producer, DJ, and music software writer. Get your mind right for a trip through some of the darker, more intense corners of our Techno world. Cracking cuts from Ingen / Boris Noiz, SHXCXCHCXSH, and more. Proper business here, ladies and gentlemen. -Arturo http://www.art-and-artifice.com/ Direct Link: http://bit.ly/1TBMccN Side Note: Thanks again for all the support so far, we are full steam ahead for more music coming your way. If you have friends who might be interested in what we are doing, share the website with them! Also Facebook is terrible, but share it on facebook :) No one is making any money off of our little project but we just wanna share the music as far and wide as it will go. Thanks!

Another Mix Site
Hey 313ers, I've launched a site for a lot of the sorts of sounds some of you might be interested in; if you are in the mood please check us out: http://www.art-and-artifice.com/ Just mixes, no B.S. First episode from me and #2 from the always fantastic Andrew Duke. I've got more in the pipe and will be releasing new content down the line from myself and some people you might know. If any of you 313 people are interested in contributing we are always looking for more great sounds. Thanks! -Arturo
-Another- mix site?
I've been a 313 lurker/poster for more than a decade or so now; a lot of you I only know through the interwebs but have met a good few of you in person. Anyway I've been sitting on a web domain for a number of years for some upcoming music projects and it's finally on the agenda to get the site going and filled with music from myself and like-minded people. This will be lean; no filler. Just posted mixes from quality people and pointing to occasional releases. There's already plenty of great existing blogs to go to for opinions and articles, this will strictly be music to listen to. Anyway might be hitting up some of you in the next month or so if you want to share anything fun you're working on or record some sets. FYI this isn't really a site to get anyone popular or any press, it's just for heads to get on and listen to some good content, with minimum level of bullshit. Any 313ers feel free to email me if interested in some collaboration! -Arturo in Chicago

I've always been of the opinion that there are two types of events in our little corner of the music scene: The ones people throw to make money and the ones people throw for the sake of everyone having a good time. One maybe charges enough money that your artists get paid and maybe everyone breaks even. One tries to sell VIP bracelets. I hope it's the former type of event, but I suspect its the latter. -Arturo

(313) DEMF Post-Op Thoughts
In case anyone is interested, my $0.02, a few highlights from the long weekend: Overall this was just a so-so fest for me. A few standouts here and there but I wasn't blown away by the majority of the acts, but definitely plenty of fun moments throughout. As usual the afterparties were generally more entertaining than anything going on at the festival proper. Festival - Mark Ernestus was great, but I could still hear sound bleeding from the stage behind the amphitheater, which was a bit distracting. Enjoyed the reggae but as usual no one around to hear it at that time of day. It's unfortunate with paxahau banishing all the locals underground to the land of terrible sound quality, but caught a few sets that were quite good (Shakir, R. Hood, etc). Larry Heard was a lot of fun and was great to hear something more mellow for a Sunday afternoon. Inner City was fun, probably the best way for me to describe it. Beatport Stage - Pardon my hatoraide but I couldn't listen to more than about 30 seconds of that nonsense at any point over three days. Thought the music was 90% junk. A lot of people on that stage thought they were -very- cool, though. One of the only stages that each performer needed to bring a 30 person entourage along with them to populate the performance area. Lame. Redbull Stage - As I've found over last few years there's always something entertaining going on in that direction, even if I'm not a fan of the music it seems like everyone is having a pretty good time over there. Afterparties - Center Street Social - Got shut down around 4-ish before I really got into it. I never did get the whole story with all the other drama associated with that party, and along with the whole police thing made Saturday was a miss for me all around. Sunday - Interdimensional Transmission Party - Great venue, and an awesome crew. They've thrown some of my favorite demf-related parties (Cannonball Run) and I had an amazing time. The main room was a sweatbox though, but aside from that quite fun music and a great atmosphere. Metroplex - Didn't catch it, and none of my friends did, have yet to hear how it went. Old Miami - Apparently the place to be now? I went to it a few years ago for the early morning party and had an amazing time. Was a lot of fun, good food, and very reasonably populated (room to hang out, dance, and have conversations). By the time I got there this year there were like 500 people wall-to-wall, and a line around the block. Thankfully with the onset of rain and the threat of the fire-dept people the majority cleared out as the music was turned off. I stuck it out with my friends and soon things were back in action. Some dancing in the rain followed. Great times. Monday Night - Poker at the casino (haha). So all in all I had fun, but I feel decidedly different from years past where I felt I had to make difficult decisions all day long, choosing between pairs or three artists at a time that I felt I needed to see. I hope everyone that went had a blast thought! -Art

Re: (313) OT: Nice article about the current state of journalism about the D
Yea don't get me wrong, I'm all about people coming into communities and trying to make a difference, provided they are actually trying to contribute. As far as the squat scene, I have no idea. I've see it a bit here and there in Chicago (artist kids illegally living in storefronts). I do know that regular people end up doing most of the leg work in the U.S. for this kind of thing before officials catch on or are convinced to help. Occasionally developers will give rental discounts to people in the arts when they are trying to build up 'artist neighborhoods' to drive up business, and eventually housing prices. It's a mixture of things happening organically, and then business/political interests becoming involved in order to profit. Neighborhood 'cycles' are a fascinating subject, though, and unfortunately what is considered blighted or bad more often than not is just replaced with white and expensive. Gentrification is happening pretty fast in many U.S. cities, with things headed more towards a Paris-style model of the wealthy living inside the city and the poor pushed to the outlaying city suburbs. It's happening -extremely- fast in D.C., and many Chicago neighborhoods are becoming barely recognizable from 5-10 years ago. Very OT but it's an exciting subject. -Art On Thu, Nov 26, 2009 at 10:22 AM, Odeluga, Ken ken.odel...@dowjones.com wrote: It seems like time for some of this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g7aSypQmLRA Albeit sounds more and more ironic every year, to me anyway .. -Original Message- From: Robert Taylor [mailto:rdtay...@channel4.co.uk] Sent: Thursday, November 26, 2009 4:13 PM To: kent williams; Arturo Lopez Cc: Three-One-Three Subject: RE: (313) OT: Nice article about the current state of journalism about the D Berlin was in ruins and became a haven for artists. Places where people can live cheaply and have room to work are essential for the creation of new art. I don't think 'ruin porn' is very useful if that's all it is. But if you spend any time in Detroit, the ruination is pretty inescapable. To me it feels less like ruins and more like fallow land, as though all it's waiting for is the right spark. Beyond both these ideas -- Detroit as lurid icon of urban decay, and as unrealized potential -- there's something that the rest of the world tends to ignore, which is that Detroit has real people living there across the whole spectrum of human experience -- the desparate, the scary, the hopeful, the evil and the good. And somehow every 'good' thing that comes to Detroit doesn't really reach down to help the poorest of the poor. Re: (313) On line Detroit Photography Exhibit
Mark Alor Powell takes the cake for showing actual, breathing people living their lives, and not just ruined buildings like we so often see. Beautiful exhibit, beautiful body of work. Looking at the photos as a whole, though, you do get some of the synthesis you were talking about... unfortunately most of those photos on their own, while beautiful, do reinforce the narrative you were pointing out. -Art 2009/8/2 kent williams chaircrus...@gmail.com: This was tagged on Boing Boing, and I thought it was pretty lovely. http://www.mitchcope.com/projects/detroit-book-of-love/ It brings up something I find interesting: Detroit is obviously a city with unprecedented problems, that these photos illustrate eloquently. But they also reiinforce a narrative of Detroit as a post-prosperity wasteland. It feels like there's a conceptual Detroit being created, a sort of Life After Man wasteland with crack heads and copper scavengers scuttling among the ruins. This is by no means the whole story -- real people live in Detroit, and despite the challenges they face, many manage to live productive, even happy lives. They also have an active and evolving civic and artistic culture. How could these two stories of Detroit be synthesized?

Here it is. The first suggestion was part 1 of the show, the track you are looking for starts out part 2 (n.y.c. peech boys – dance sister [biofeedback] (island) 1983 http://sonicsunset.org/ci_20070708_dave.mp3 -Art
(313) Streaming Music Online - Tech Question
Eventually I'm going to netcast live mixes to some of my friends; I'm looking for the best (and hopefully cheapest) ways to do this. Hosting a pre-recorded music file is no problem, I've got web space and can link someone to that easily, as I see a lot of you do for your sets. It's the live steam that I'm interested in. What do people pay for dedicated hosts? Are there free, probably ad supported, options? I'm sure many of you have familiarity with these issues. -Art
Re: (313) Netbooks; worth it for music applications?
Thanks for all the suggestions! Looks like some of you have been bogged down by slower machines, good to know. It does seem like a 'regular' laptop is probably a better choice, at least for HD space and processing power, and not much additional cost. I'm a PC guy (won't get into the mac debate here but I'm not a fan). Windows 7 is right around the corner so that might be the right time for me to pick one up.anyway I appreciate all the comments. -Art
(313) Netbooks; worth it for music applications?
Was wondering if anyone out there had any experience running any music applications on a netbook? Seems like it might be a nice/cheap solution for running ableton/serato/whatever and quite a bit more portable than a larger laptop. Concerned a bit weather a $250 netbook has a beefy enough processor to handle these apps, but then again people were running those apps on slower laptops 3 or 4 years ago. Hmm. I'd imagine you'd have to buy an external soundcard though. Thoughts? -Arturo
Re: (313) DJ mix CDs - good ones
Adam X - On the One and Two : Covers a lot of years and a pretty good range. It is pretty dark, though, so lots of grit and industrial sounds and some NY techno. I can't take too much of that stuff anymore but every once and a while it really hits the spot. Some good wonky stuff out of left field on this one, too. http://www.juno.co.uk/ppps/products/72601-01.htm You mentioned Herbert's Let's All Make Mistakes, one of my favorites ever. If you haven't bought this then you need to, anyone reading this. http://www.juno.co.uk/ppps/products/64070-01.htm -Art
(313) Festival Debriefing?
So what's the verdict this year? Should I be kicking myself for missing an incredible few days or did I dodge a mediocre festival bullet? Def in for next year though. -Art
Re: (313) who is going to the festival??? Re: (313) festival roll call? anybody making t-shirts?
I'm out this year. I've only missed a couple of festivals so this is not my first choice. Looks like a decent lineup (with the usual nonsense of course). Got laid off recently so money is tight. Not a lot of room for architects in Chicago at the moment what with the housing market completely flushed down the toilet. I should make it next year no sweat, though. Party hard for us that can't make it! -Art
Re: (313) more DEMF/Movement 2009 additions
Looks like some promising stuff on there. I hate on Minus stuff a lot but Clark Warner does some really choice ambient/downtempo sets, (at least the ones I've heard on the old paxahau archives) would have liked to check that out. I'm pretty upset that I can't make it this year (I'm moving a few weeks beforehand and funds are low). I hope to hear some good reports, though! -Arturo
(313) What does Live mean these days?
This is not a snarky question, I'm just curious what that actually means in these modern times of ableton live? Looking at the Demf lineup I saw plenty of (live) next to some names, and I'm wondering if that really has much meaning anymore? As more and more people are switching to laptops with built-in manipulation capabilities, it seems that designation is becoming far less special. As always it matters what you do with what you have in front of you, but it might be a very arbitrary term sooner rather than later. I'm not nearly as old school as most of you but I do remember when live meant you had a rack of gear in front of you and you were piecing together/reshaping music on the fly. I'm not getting into the argument about the regular vinyl DJ creating music, I believe that, too, but you don't see live next to a traditional vinyl set, and I get the feeling some of the new live stuff isn't very far from it, just mp3 tracks with a little laptop FX help. Anyway, thoughts? -Arturo
(313) Junior Boys tonight in Chicago @ The Metro (4/2/09)

Re: (313) Tristan Watkins - Antinomy II
Great stuff Tristan. I'm still going through and putting some of the ID's with the music, will definitely be picking a couple of these tracks up. -Arturo I did a new mix today. It's a one-off, clocking in at just under two and a half hours. Probably 50% house, 50% other. I've only listened to it once, but I think it came out pretty much like I intended. There's a fair amount of [313]-relevant stuff in this one. Download here http://www.phonopsia.co.uk/mixes/TristanWatkins_AntimonyII_VernalEquinox2009.mp3 if interested.
Re: (313) Classics not CLassics 5 Chicago House 86 - 91
Always a fan of that sound, and nice to hear a classics mix that steers clear of most of the standard go-to tracks. One of the nice things about a lot of things from that genre is that they get re-pressed pretty frequently, I just picked up a nice 'best of mr. fingers' last year with a couple of gems: http://www.discogs.com/Various-Best-Of-Mr-Fingers/release/449854 Good stuff with Phortune. I can't not think about 'your only friend' whenever i hear that voice though, hehe. Speaking of classic chicago, a ton of the 80's WBMX HotMix radio show were archived on a website as of about a year ago, but it looks like they've been taken down... (http://www.nuyoshi.com/wbmx.htm) Does anyone know where they went? I had them all on my office computer but the drive got wiped -Arturo
(313) New Sonic Sunset Mix
Nice new mix from Mr. Maqueen. If you are a fan of the series, he's the host that leans more towards old soul and funk, broad spectrum sorts of sounds. -Arturo -- Sonic Sunset March 2009: Night Shift Download at http://sonicsunset.com Matt takes a 2+ hour journey from chilled post-punk, slow-mo disco, post-dub remixes and post-bourbon crate digging. (313) Detroit Experiment Remixes
Remember how awesome that project was? I Just came across this today: http://www.juno.co.uk/ppps/products/341037-01.htm I don't think anything from that album really needed a remix -Arturo
Re: (313) Model 500 - The Flow film clip
.awesome! Time to go buy some wet-suits for all my lady friends and get ahead of the fashion trend :) -Arturo There's something about that old video aesthetic that I always love though. Something about the grainy video quality that I always really like, no matter what the subject is. I don't watch a lot of music videos but I'm seeing some attempts to parrot that with new stuff these daysto mixed results. example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pKz-RXSeIYA

Thanks for all the suggestions, it looks like I've got plenty of options. I'll make sure to post a link eventually and you can check out the hack-job : ) -Arturo
