RE: (313) re: surveillance records?
There is definately a Surveillance Recordings from Detroit. I have a record on the label by DFA called "Microstructural Characterization" from 2001. Don't know if this is the only release, but its damn fine deep house with a techno edge and I'm not surprised someone like Chris Gray would be playing it. I am surprised however that this hasn't been mentioned on here before. >Does this represent the label as a whole, or are there other releases I >should be looking out for instead? Where would you recommend I start? The music isn't completely representative, no. Although I do think the "feel" of the album is. I would say to start by checking out Jans Massel aka Kandis, Senking, Fumble, who has been the main contributer to the label. There is a Kandis CD called 1996 - 1999 that compiles the early 12"s which would be a good place to start I guess. Then there is Jorg Follert aka Wechsel Garland, Wunder, Saucer. The latest Wechsel Garland LP Liberation von... is really nice, as is the earlier Wunder CD. I'd also check Donna Regina's earlier works as well, especially the Star Ferry track and its remixes. I think the latest KK release is an album by Maerz, which I've had a quick listen to and initially found it to be almost a straight-up pop album, guitars and all - but more listening is required. There is more which I haven't mentioned, check out http://www.karaoke-kalk.net/news/news_01.htm - although its in desperate need of an update. RE: [313] 1-900-GET-KHAN
Well, as far as I know there are two different Khans out there. One is a group of 3 guys producing "tribal house" and the other is a New Yorker, who has also produced under the moniker Captain Comatose for Playhouse. The latter just released an LP on Playhouse: Khan - No Comprendo, which I really like mainly because its quite different to everything else at the moment - a mix of indie, lounge and, well, techno - lots of guest vocals including Jon Spencer, yeeha! So I would recommend this, however I don't know if it's the same Khan you have, or think you have. ??? Not *really* answering your question C, but... There is a brilliant album by the artist Wechsel Garland (Jorg Follert) on German label Morr Music. The music was originally composed by Jorg specifically for a German ballet, which was performed in Bonn early last year. He subsequently extended the tracks and released them as the aforementioned self-titled album. RE: [313] Quick question...
Well, I'm not a DJ and have no aspirations of becoming one but I have a turntable and only buy vinyl. I used to get by just buying CDs but as my tastes developed and my appetite for new, deep music increased I knew it couldn't be satisfied without a turntable. Buying vinyl does open up a whole new world, it just depends on whether you want/need to go there or not. I wouldn't get too worried about it, if you can't see the need to get a turntable then you probably don't have to, as long as you're enjoying your music. Maybe these people who are baffled and bewildered by you need to get a life of their own. The Prefuse 73 album "Vocal Studies & Uprock Narratives" on Warp is also very good. Lots of crazy sliced up vocals and downtempo hip hop with elements of glitch. Stefan Robbers is definately alive and kickin. He's got a new ep out on his own label FWD: under the pseudonym Sierra Romeo. It's deep, ambient, glitchy stuff. He also recently had an ep out on Ifach. Cheap is still around. RE: [313] can't get no decent techno .... but i try
Firstly, I must say that I'm envious of your situation because I simply can't keep up (financially) with the amount of good releases lately. Some label recommendations? How about Salo, BPitch Control, Raum Musik, Shitkatapult, Sender, Italic, 3b, Force Inc, Klang, Perlon, Playhouse, Plug Research, Background, Cytrax, Context, Tektite, Grow! ...etc.etc. and that's just the dance-floor oriented material, which represents maybe a quarter of what I listen to every week (there's also ambient stuff, house, jazzy breaks and others which could be called IDM but shouldn't). Trust me, there's plenty of quality, deep music out there, "just think outside the square you live in". If anyone here in Perth wants to test one of these out, Mills Records in Fremantle has one as a listening station. >From the BentCrayon mailout: --- MILLS, JEFF: Time Machine CD (TOMORROW/AXIS). "Inspired and noted on the novel Time Machine by H.G. Wells, this 43 minute sequed journey into time travel explores the outer limits and stretches the boundaries of your mind. Produced, mixed and edited by Jeff Mills. RE: [313] new monolake and [more stuff]
>the new monolake album "gravity" has just been released >http://www.monolake.de/ Not surprisingly, this sounds excellent. Is this going to get a vinyl release soon? Hopefully we won't have to wait as long as it took Nighttime World Vol.2, which I just picked up the triple pack of. eeexcellent. Others tickling my fancy: Moron - Neo-moronics on Tektite Jan Jelenik on Scape (wow!) the latest Safety Scissors on Force Tracks the Planisphere:South ep on Innertone (excellent Australian deepness) Boards of Canada - In a beautiful place... on Warp Skein - Venice on Vertical Form Miss Dinky - Atacama on Traum (a native Chileian woman now residing in NYC - fantastic!!) Quarks - Rehmixes on Monika and just today listened to the new 21/22 Corp., which I think is called Redshot by 1954. Possibly a Dan Lui production (I think I saw his name on it somewhere). Sounds very good, on the first listen anyway. Respect JasonB

It definately aint track 3 from Silent Intro. Thanks anyway. Track i.d. (easy)
I think this is a fairly well known track, cause I've heard it on at least one other mix online, just not sure why I missed this. I'm currently hearing it on Mike Grant's frequencydetroit.com house mix, at around the 49min mark it comes in, funky house with a female spoken word bit throughout, the main part of which says (I think): "power to conquer, for the self-defence...", over a really beautiful organ riff. Thanks. Respect JasonB
New Moodymann on PFG info
I picked up the new Moodymann 12" on Peacefrog last week and am after some more info on it. From memory it has PFG003 etched on it, side B has the text: SIDE B: NMYWAGON and Dont You want My Love, but side A (1 track) has nothing. Since side A is the standout IMO, I'd like to know the title of it, and also if it (and NMYWAGON) is actually a new track. The A track in question is stripped back house with a constant male vocal stab: "keep on", and a piano line that is subtle yet dropped in with immaculate timing such that it hits you in that special place. RE: [313] Alton Miller In Perth
>Here's what it says about Alton Miller... "Alton Miller did not attract a >huge crowd at any time during his set of three hours. Was this due to his >name being relatively unknown? In any case, he played a variety of music, >from flowing groovy house to breaks to harder tech-house." > >Added comments: he is known, it's just that it wasn't pushed in a big way >and to the right crowd (due the late addition??) and he needs to play East >Coast (ie Melbourne & Sydney) too to get that love. The house/deep >house/tech-house scene is really blowing up here now. I saw Alton play NYE. It was a bit weird in that there must have been around 10,000 people at this gig - 4 floors of tunes: 1) trance/hard house and breaks, 2) techno, 3) house, 4) drum n bass - Perusing each of the floors, it quickly became apparent what the people were here for: trance, followed by techno and drum 'n bass. The house room was next to empty when we arrived (just before midnight), but after spending a couple of minutes in the other rooms we were more than happy to relax in the space and enjoy some quality music. Alton came on around 12:30 and although a few more people got on the dancefloor, the crowd remained very sparse. In a word, his set was funky. Lots of smooth, deep house, some vocals, some groovy breaks and some classic disco stuff. The DJ booth was very close to the dancefloor which allowed those of us on there to really feel Alton's vibe which was very relaxed - dancing, clapping hands, big smile. I thoroughly enjoyed his set as did the handful of others on and around the dancefloor. Now as to why there was hardly anyone there in the house room to see Alton. He was a late inclusion on the bill, but I can honestly say this has little or nothing to do with it. Cyclone's right, the whole gig wasn't pushed to the sort of crowd who would normally go and see Alton play. I mean tickets were around $100 each for 10 - 15 international DJs, but when there's only one out of that bunch that you know you'll enjoy, what's the point? This would be a good time to say I won free tickets to this, and wouldn't have gone otherwise ;-) Respect, and a belated "happy new year" to one and all 313'ers. JasonB

RE: [313] Redefinitions (was: Re: trading on napster)
>Not to boost my own theory here, but Mills captured, to me, the sounds of >what toneshifting sounds like in these three tracks... Have you listened to any of his Purposemaker releases? There are some amazing sounds here which I believe are the essence of your theory. At least this is the stuff that instantly came to mind when you first raised the issue of "toneshifting". Insane funk. Respect JasonB np: Spacetime Continuum - Sea Biscuit
RE: [313] stuff
>like bc / main st / luomo...what is perlon / playhouse? Perlon and Playhouse are both record labels. I guess they get lumped together because they are both German and put out quirky house and techno. Check: http://www.mad-net.de/data/labels.html ...and Luomo is aka Vladislav Delay (not a record label). As has been mentioned, his Vocalcity LP is very good, and his latest ep on Force Tracks called Carter is some really beautiful vocal dubbed out house, which for some reason (probably its laidback style) reminded me of "Promised Land". Long and dreamy. Respect JasonB
RE: [313] Forthcoming on Tresor
If by "it" you mean the big Homelands festival or whatever its called then yes, I know acts like Orbital and Green Velvet are no longer coming over. Suburban Knight however, has been advertised as doing a club gig here next weekend. This was in the street press yesterday, which also announced the other cancellations so I figure this is gonna happen. But then again...
