Frank, Despite the challenges with distributors over the last years we do plan to manufacture a few shirts again this year. I'm not sure where you are but in the past shops such as Juno, Rub a Dub, Hardwax, and Emporium 50 have carried our brand. I've tried in the past to obtain shirts from local labels for Emporium 50 but it turned out to be a challenge. I may have some MG shirts left, hit me off list and let me know your size. In addition to Ron's passing Unique Distributors and Syntax Music Distribution went out of business. Unique was almost all but out of house or techno and mostly RB but Syntax seemed to be the best techno distributor in the US. Now, not only is there a problem to get techno into Europe but I'm wondering how European techno is going to make its way here. What US distributors are left other than Downtown 161, Crosstalk, TRC, Groove, and Forced Exposure? Mike Grant
(313) Ron Murphy
It is with a heavy heart and great regret that I announce the passing of Ron Murphy. I was called with the news that he died of a heart attack sometime today. Most of you already know of Ron and how important he was to the creation of Detroit techno so there's not much else I can say. A fund will be setup hopefully tomorrow to help with funeral expenses. I'll pass on any additional details as I get them. Mike Grant

Least of all me; but I've been through several years of reduced financial resources, and after the first three or four thousand records something really has to be amazing -- and unavailable in other formats -- for me to consider it. During the peak for Dance Music in the US -- roughly 1996-2001 -- the whole industry got really sloppy and lazy because they could maintain cash flow without being careful about business practices. Dietrich at Complete in Brooklyn is still going strong, because in addition to his musical talents and skills, he has a real head for the business. He's also willing to work more or less alone in a crappy office in darkest Brooklyn. And what about Submerge? You may have to step around the mower and the rake to visit the store, but they're still going strong. Again, they emphasize humilty, hard work and common sense business practices. All of these distributor failures are actually a good opportunity for smart people to get into the game. You won't be able to put any sex toys on your payroll, or stuff your nose with cocaine, but if you make the connections with labels and stores, there will always be a market for vinyl.

RE: (313) virtual sex lp repressed! ACTUALLY IT'S BEEN BOOTLEGGED, BURN THE BOOTLEGGERS
Give me a break, It's not information, copyrights are intangible assets fixed in sound recordings ultimately owned by someone. Perhaps you're thinking of public domain songs. Copyright holders have exclusive reproduction and distribution rights which have been violated with these copies. So, not only have the eight artists involved been screwed but also the label that put it out (or whoever owns its rights). The records are still available to this society but no one wants to seem to wait until they come across them. I've been guilty of copyright infringement personally but I won't try to justify it by saying is should be available because people want it. ACTUALLY IT'S BEEN BOOTLEGGED, BURN THE BOOTLEGGERS Okay, I feel like playing the devil's advocate here, and I'd argue that what your point misses is that information is not property in the traditional sense of a car or house... Some people would argue that it is in the nature of information that it will spread despite whatever legislative limits are put on it. It is also in the public interest that information be readily available, which is why we have libraries. In the US, (according to the constitution) copyright law is supposed to exist to balance the rights of the individual producer with the rights of society to progress and benefit from the intellectual property. If information becomes completely unavailable, then society no longer is able to benefit from it. It is one thing if a work is unpublished, but something else if it is simply out of print. If a record is not in print, and a friend of mine has it, I have no problem with recording a copy, even if it is illegal. I'm not much of a capitalist though. ~David [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: This is consumerism gone mad! Just because someone has an item you want doesn't mean that you have the automatic right to buy it. RE: (313) KDJ not playing at festival and good house
There's an even more obvious techno influence in the latest Kerri Chandler and Joey Negro/Scattering Stars (a LOT like Los Hermanos). Speaking of minimal, I have a Terrence Dixon project coming out next month or early fall on EndtoenD. It seems Kenny Dixon Jr.'s live set has been taken off the festival lineup. Anyone know if this is a temporary thing or not? Also, on the recent topic of good house music this memorial with the knowledge that Rob Hood ihas been a topic on here lately. I thought I'd share my club favorites right now. I'm all about this guy Mr. V on Louie Vega's record label Vega records. His, 'jus dance (sole channel mix) and somethin' with jazz are getting tons of play by deep house jocks and for me they are the perfect compromise between the direct simplicity of deep tracks and the warmth and familiarity of the smoother house stuff. They might be too jazzy or smooth for this list, but I definitely hear a techno influence in the sparse beat and use of dubbed out chords. Don't expect the eeriness of KDJ or theo, but top tunes in my book. For a good perspective of what the top deep house tracks getting play in da club this year I recommend Louie Vega's Ritual Dance mix. All well produced floor stormers for the deep house club scene, which, for better or worse, dominates the nightlife out here.

RE: (313) Good records with stupid social commentary about the state of house music or whatever on.
Sorry Ken but Kingdom's not the type of place you're going to hear the deeper MG tunes. Hardcore techno? I don't believe there were any Glenn Wilson tracks; more like UR - Timeline, Abe Duke/Blake Baxter - What Happened (which started this all), Rob Hood - The Vision, Jeff Mills, Mike Grant and some other funky techno. I'm working on one of those MG nights so we'll see what happens.. -Original Message- From: DJ Ken [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, December 09, 2004 8:28 AM To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: (313) Good records with stupid social commentary about the state of house music or whatever on. I've seen him play in Holland few months ago, he's massive, I only didn't like his dj set at all, it was way to simple and almost hardcore techno (it wasn't 3 o'clock yet), sorry Mike, but I expected some moods grooves / trackmode vibes... Maybe it was because the dj who played before him, he played worse! /out Ken

RE: (313) do not hate on discogs
I'd have to stand up for Discogs as well. They don't go out and track down every release's information and input it themselves; they rely on the contributors for accuracy but it doesn't always work out that way. I use it as a reference, not an end all... Im just one of the many free users and am not affiliated with the site by any other means, but I still have to stand up for them if you feel it necissary to besmirch their name. Discogs has been very helpful to me in the past. I can only recollect a fraction of the many times I have found discogs to be totally helpful. Knowledge is power, and there is a lot you can learn if your are willing to spend some time researching discogs. its also totally free, you dont even have to be a member to search its information libraries. And is it so unthinkable and unforgivable that there would be spotty information about Basic Channel? I consider myself a fairly well informed member of the under ground community, and even i think all the basic channel records look alike. Artists like von oswald arent about advertising themselves nearly as much as you do for yourself.
