RE: (313) Felix Da Housecat

2004-07-23 Thread Dan Kurzius
The only time I heard him spin was with Robert Hood at a London gig many
years ago. I think he had just started Clashback records and it was at the
start of the whole WildPitch thing.

I have to correct something that was mentioned here real fast :)

Legend has it that Flex got his production start by sitting in and
contributing keyboard on Pierre's Fantasy Girl project
http://www.discogs.com/release/132582 in the late 80's.

Within a year of that The Wild Pitch sound was alive and kicking, Clashbackk
dropped circa 96'. The Wild Pitch sound was brought to a broader audience
by labels such as Strictly Rhythm around the time Clashbackk was started,
but unfortuntely the sound was dying off when projects such as Rise From
Your Grave hit. Kind of singled the beginning of the end :(

We used to go crazy to Wild Pitch records in the late 80's/early 90's, that
sound has always been one of my favorites, I'd love to see a resergence in
it. Does anyone know if there are any recent tracks in that vain floating
around that are worth grabbing?

RE: (313) Felix Da Housecat

2004-07-23 Thread Dan Kurzius
Yeah the wild pitch sound was on it's way out when rise from your grave
dropped. The Phuture guys did release Spirit on Strictly Rhythm and Pierre
dropped What Is House Muzik on Emotive a couple of years later but not much
beyond that really came out. At least anything I've seen beyond that has
just been repressing of the original classics. If anyone knows of any
records I might have missed I'd love to hear about them!

I think labels such as DJ Duke's Sex Trax and even DJAX-UP were partly to
blame for the downfall. Duke was big on the wild pitch sound and DJAX-UP
was big on the Chicago tip. From what I saw people jumped all over those
imprints, me included.

Unfortunately many of the projects were less melodic and more techno, which
influenced many wild pitch producers to start cranking out banging techno
records versus staying true to the original wild pitch style.

Granted I liked the banging stuff, many other labels were already putting
out techno of that nature so I personally didn't like to see the older
Chicago producers who understood the Wild Pitch formula going that route.

I went to see dj Pierre in London when he was pioneering the wildpitch

no..cos he wanted to concentrate on the wildpitch thing
He had just released 'rise from your grave'...

Fantasy girl was in 87. Are u saying it was wildpitch sound in between
then cos if it was. I missed it.

(313) John Tejada Playing in Atlanta!

2004-06-16 Thread Dan Kurzius
Another down South event:

Lifeform Project Late Night Essentials Present // FILTER

JOHN TEJADA // Palette Recordings, 7th City, Playhouse // LA

Known for crafting a brand of subtle, musical techno, John Tejada's recorded
output ranges across tempo and genre lines, from chilled out affairs with
spacious arrangements to pulsating, densely layered, deeply energetic tracks
that work magnificently in the hands of DJs as well as on the home stereo.

Earlier on, his music found release on labels such as A13, Multiplex and
Generation RS. Following on to those successes, he established his own
imprint, Palette, in Los Angeles, in 1996, and has enjoyed seven years of
steady growth and recognition. The label has served as an exclusive outlet
for his own prodigious output but has recently begun to expand its roster.

He has also continued to record for other labels such as Plug Research, 7th
City, Moods and Grooves, deFocus, Sino and others, often in collaboration
with 12 year long collaborator Arian Leviste, and alongside these numerous
singles, has also produced eight albums; two for A13, Palette and one each
for deFocus, Plug Research, Moods and Grooves and Playhouse.

For those of you in the Southern US:

DANIEL BELL
(7th City, Logistic Records, Telegraph, Tresor // Detroit)

Born in Sacramento, California, Daniel Bell grew up outside of Toronto,
Canada, and then moved to Detroit where he collaborated with Richie Hawtin
as Cybersonik for three years on Plus 8 Records. In 1991, he started his own
label, Accelerate, on which he released his influential releases as DBX.
Based on nearby Chicago track records, he reduced that sound further into
funky, streamlined grooves. The formula proved to be successful and helped
launch a new aesthetic in techno and house music known as minimal.

With the overwhelming success of his Losing Control single in 1994, Daniel
set up 7th City Distribution in order to assist smaller Midwest labels to
get distribution in overseas markets. He also created three new labels - 7th
City, Elevate and Harmonie Park. In 2000, he relocated to Berlin, Germany,
and released his first mix CD, The Button-Down Mind of Daniel Bell, on
Tresor Records. He since has produced a series of remixes for a diverse
range of artists, includng John Tejada, Pantytec, Akufen and John Thomas. He
currently has a DJ residency at Robert Johnson in Frankfurt.

Just in your livingroom in a cabinet or just stacked away in some corner,

Any ideas, photo's of there records, etc?

I'm moving this month to my new house and want to get rid of all those
crates but I find it hard to find a nice cabinet or something for a decent

2002-09-18 Thread Dan Kurzius
I agree with Minto, I've been using the Container store creates since the
early 90's and they have held up the best from all that I have come across.

They can be seen here
http://www.containerstore.com/browse/Product.jhtml?PRODID=65121CATID=166.
Note they are stackable and have handles.

I do suggest though if you pick some up you place 2 or 3 12x12 inch pieces
of cardboard in the front and back of the records. This helps keep the
records on the end very ridged over time.

2002-08-19 Thread Dan Kurzius
and the nameless [---] this label is call Sound Variation if your looking
for it in a record shop, the series itself is nameless. All the music
released on it is by Andy himself. Very cool minimal techno if you haven't
heard anything from it. He just put out a 3rd release about 3/4 weeks ago.

RE: [313] Final Scratch...

2002-08-19 Thread Dan Kurzius
What's up Matt,

I am curious about the Final Scratch records themselves, has anyone played
around with them, are they actually vinyl? Do they feel like a record? Is
it metal or what? I know I can read a description on their website but I'm
interested in firsthand actual test-drives.

The records do feel like vinyl, Guitar Center is selling/demoing the system
if you can get to one of their locations for an on hands try. I got to play
with the system here in Atlanta over the weekend.

Also I wonder if you can throw some REAL records into a set on one or the
other deck, to be able to go from laptop MP3 to an actual 12, and back
again. OR -- once you start a set with Final Scratch, MP3s are all you can
use?

From what I've heard you can play both.

That is the dopest CD packaging I've yet heard of, assuming it

i'll see what i can dig up. the interview was done just after they released
the cellular phone 7inch. nice but very strange guys, if i remember right
their were three in the group at the time. they always answered their phone
using different names. also always placed ads in hard sync that promoted
some sort of strange pornographic government instead of their label or
releases. i'm in the process of building out a site for my house label and
will have old issues of hard sync archived on it when live. the interview
will definitely be there if i can't send it out sooner.

RE: [313] NIMDA Virus

2001-09-20 Thread Dan Kurzius
If you are using outlook as your mail client and are sent the virus with
your the preview pane on, you will fire off the exe. Turning the pane on
and off can be done under the 'View' menu for those not familiar with where
it lives. Then if you get an unknown email you can just delete. Be careful
of mails from friends with attachments as the virus scans for old subject
lines and uses those instead of easily recognizable ones.

dK

Very nasty indeed. Not only through compromised websites, but through email
(with attachment of readme.exe - that doesn't een have to be opened!) and
through the unicode hole that allowed the code red worm through.

Cheers.
D
I'll skip saying this is off topic but I just spent a long day on this
problem and needed to share.

This virus is pretty nasty since one way it infects your pc is thru
compromised websites. I would recommend going to
http://housecall.antivirus.com/housecall/start_corp.asp and scanning your
machine.

RE: [313] obey

2001-05-20 Thread Dan Kurzius
Shepard Fairely is the man behind the creative, the group I'm referring to
are the ones that help with postering printing etc. Shepard met them
in/around Columbia SC when he lived in Charleston prior to moving to NY,
sorry to confuse. My interest in this came about because the group I
mention have a good ear for electronica and I think the minimalist nature of
their posters parallels the style of music that this list is dedicated to.

Sorry for trying to tap the creative side of all this, I truly
ologize:( I was excited to see a reference to art of some nature hit this
list. Visual interpretation to me is such an important factor as to why the
Detroit genre of music even exists. But your right we should be talking
about what T-shirts we are all going to wear to DEMF and not topics that
could hopefully influence someone to produce the next Sonic Sunset EP or War
of The Worlds 12 inch. Ah those were the days...

emulsion that's still good, and some suitable silkscreen ink. But I don't
have access to an exposing unit. I'd make up a few (NO DON'T ASK ME FOR
ONE.) carl craig supporting t-shirts if i had a way of exposing the
screen.

So does anyone have experience in the ways of ghetto-exposure? Basically
I'm thinking a whole lotta lamps, or just plain old sunlight. Trust me,
you really don't want me to try to hand-stencil them :P

anyway thanks... this may be off-topic but it's for a good cause... a
cause that is, by the way, on-topic! :)

ps NO DON'T ASK ME FOR ONE I DONT HAVE TIME TO FILL REQUESTS I AM A
WORKING MAN.

Well... The release I just recently asked about, Event Related Potential's
ERP ep shouldn't be all that hard to find. From what the nice folks on
the list told me (Thanks Sean!), ERP = Convextions. It's a pretty sweet
recording. I've often seen it at Record Time (which is also where I got it
from).

Are there any labels/artists/tracks I can compare this piece of art with?

There's two other Convextion releases on Sean Deason's Matrix label that
are well worth hunting down (although probably not that easy to find
nowadays?). Very spacey, driving grooves. Both are EPs that make people
come up to you and ask What the hell *is* that? :)

Otto, who hasn't found the Tektite EP yet :( (Merrick, who does your
distribution?)

RE: [313] Sueno latino

2001-04-13 Thread Dan Kurzius

I have the D May mixes on a label called Creative, which looks to be a sub
label of DFC. DFC is an Italian label that released some Sueno Latino stuff
from 1990 to around 1992. Another domestic label released his work but the
name escapes me. I think it has the word harbor in its name and the labels
were red with black ink (if that helps jog someones memory).

I have the domestic and DFC stuff but would need to dig for it to give more
specifics so send your questions and I'll find the records and try to fill
in the blanks for you.

Hi all,

Just a few questions about the 'original' Sueno Latino - Sueno Latino
release. If anyone has it I would appreciate a little more info on the label
, tracks, release date etc

I do have the Derrick May remix on a label which I think is called Solid
Beat. Were there any other labels that did release the May remix?

Also, I seem to be missing out on a few digest versions of 313. Anyone out
there on digests notice big gaps in between them?

Cheers,

RE: [313] Ordering Records On-Line

2001-04-13 Thread Dan Kurzius
satellite is a good spot to listen to records, but the database that drives
the site breaks all the time so ordering can be flaky and down right
frustrating.

give bent crayon a try, they email a weekly release list that you can skim.
they used to let you pre order records in some cases, i fell off the wagon
for a bit so i'm not sure if they still do that. always got what i ordered
from them.

Groovetech is my favorite place. The records you see
online are usually in stock, and it only takes 4 or 5
days to get them.
I'd stay away from Sonic Groove. They never update
their catalog so a lot of their stuff is not in stock,
and they're super slow. I once ordered 13 records,
and got 2 in the mail about a month later.
  Satellite records (www.satelliterecords.com) is
pretty good because they update their site with new
releases every week. It usually takes about 2 weeks
for an order to be received.
Also try www.611records.com. Their catalog tends to
be little out of date, but not as bad as Sonic
Groove's. My experience has been about 1.5-2 weeks
for delivery.
I just stick to Groovetech for the most part, and
fall back on 611 or Satellite if I'm looking for
something a little older that Groovetech doesn't have.

RE: [313] Jeff Mills and song id Green Velvet

2001-04-03 Thread Dan Kurzius
I think he made the switch to Cajmere for most dj gigs house and/or techno
when he closed the doors on Cajual and used Green Velvet for live PA's. I
recently purchased a mix cd by him on Under the Cajmere alias that is
straight up techno. All of the stuff is quirky minimal Steve Rachmad /
Rotation imprint sort of stuff. Past couple of live sets he has done down
south were under the Velvet alias.

:::No, I have seen him many times over the years Djing as Green Velvet.
:::It's a recent change the way I understand it.

I Thought that :

Cajmere = house (ie brighter days etc)

Green Velvet = Techno/tech house (ie stalker/preacher man)

mind you having said that perculator is still very gv sounding and i think
he released that as cajmere so i might shut up now

but i'm still waiting to see him in any guise :(

Sounds like Green Velvets Preacher man, I believe it was on the first Green
Velvet release that came out on Relief I'm speaking of the correct tune.
Really stomping track with an aggressive FM synth sounding dancing around
throughout.

still teach kids (children?) to play house. Or something.

Thanks in advance. Back to lurking...
