Sounds like you might be refering to the 'So Far So Good' comp which was
on Ubiquity, if not then its worth picking up.

I used to have an As One 12" that I loved, but it was either stolen or
I lost it to an ex, can't remember which. Anyway, I just found an old
MP3 cd with a bunch of As One stuff on there, and I'm going to check
it out, but it doesn't seem to be an album, rather a collection of
random tracks. So I wanted to get some opinions... Where's the best
place to start with As One or Kirk DeGiorgio in general? Also, any
hidden / rare gems?

hi all
this seems a sick thing for (ao) Belgian users it seems: megaupload
always states that 'all downloads slots for your country (Belgium) are
in use 'at the moment (sic)'.
I wouldn't really know what the sense in this is; but it's been for two
months now that megaupload makes it impossible to people in our country
to download without such toolbar. Which is a sad thing :-(
who can help/would want to help?
thank you

Re: AW: (313) berlin, berlin wir fahren nach berlin :)

2006-05-23 Thread De Block, Mario
was there too and enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere at berghain/panorama sunday
afternoon. You'd just stumble accross Theo Parrish and Carl C and Buzz Goree
(who'll promote a truck at the
next Love Parade btw; which lost dr Motte as director, something i didn't seem
to have caught through 313)

for another few tips; I enjoyed being at the Tacheles spot too (where A Guy
Called Gerald has his own studio) it's something like a worn-out building full
of alternative art/goa scenery,
and graffiti rebellion - alas their terrace features Coca Cola parasols (which
is really sod if you criticize and take a stand against majors through art at
all of your four floors i
guess)
(read more about the site and the link with Gerald on
http://super.tacheles.de/cms/kuenstler/abfrag2_detail.php?id=37)

Next to Wee12kend Club (which featured Theo Parrish and Dixon saturday night
and is located on the twelveth floor of a building overlooking the
Alexanderplatz) I heard great comments on
Watergate too, it's down Kreuzberg (Falckensteinstrasse). Their party listings
impressed me anyway. I only found it strange and odd that two third of the
Wee12kend club just didn't take
too much notice of the music and its deejays - the place is a little
ill-designed for that too as the speakers surround just a small part of the
floor

And close to Watergate, at the same street, you got a gallery called The
Aquarium (a spin-off of its London's homeground) that features Jimmy Cauty's
slightly subversive art for another
few weeks from now.

I passed by Tresor's former address too - the whole place's devasted by a
massive building project which erases anything it has been - for which i would
like to question www.3leipziger.de
if they'd plan to eventually leave a marking spot for memorizing the club - in
their basement or something. I think that's something Tresor would be
appropriately memorized with, though i
don't know if the Bauwert building experts really (would) take interest in that
- i'd only hope so. Anyone who'd follow me for that at www.3leipziger.de? ;)

(313) Hawtin at the Winter Games

2006-01-31 Thread De Block, Mario
might be nice to know

Richie Hawtin creates music for the Winter Games
posted on 16-01-2006

Olympic ceremony producers K2006 invited Richie Hawtin to collaborate
with renowned Italian choreographer, Enzo Cosimi, on a key section of
the XXth Olympics Winter Games Opening Ceremony taking place in Torino
on February 10th. The new composition titled 9:20 was written & produced
by Hawtin and will accompany Cosimi’s provocative choreography featuring
famous Italian dancer Robert Bolle along with dozens of other dancers,
performers and acrobats. Hawtin & Cosimi worked together in
Hawtin’s Berlin studio to fully realize the drama and emotions of
Cosimi's performers, building an evolving soundscape of sounds and
effects to accompany the different movements of Cosimi’s piece. Ceremony
producers have assembled an energetic program planned for the Opening
Ceremonies with a theme originating around the foundation elements of
Rhythm, Passion and Speed. Internationally renown not only for his music
and global DJ performances, but also for his interest in new creative
technologies, Hawtin is in perfect harmony with both the concept and its
global audience. “Enzo and I are very much interested in pushing
boundaries, both as artists and for our audiences. Working together for
the Opening Ceremonies of the Winter Games delivers the creative
endeavor to not only entertain a huge audience, but to also introduce
them to sights and sounds that they may have never experienced before,"
says Hawtin from his studio in Berlin. Born in England and raised in
Windsor, Ontario, Canada, Richie Hawtin is highly regarded
internationally for his recordings both as Richie Hawtin and his
pseudonym as Plastikman while on the world stage as one of electronic
music’s most innovative and in demand performers. His recent album, DE9
| Transitions boasts a CD mix plus DVD featuring a 5.1 surround mix
produced by Hawtin. Today, in between touring the globe, the Canadian
producer spends time between his studios in Windsor, Canada and Berlin,
Germany.

(313) arte popobsession

2005-08-18 Thread De Block, Mario
hi
wouldn't know if a lot of you can receive Arte, but tonight at 23.10
cte, a documentary series called PopObsessions, arrives at its fourth
part, which stars deejays like Laurent Garnier, Westbam and Miss Kittin
under the 'God Is A DJ' moniker. It's a German documentary from 2005,
and I don't know if any other part of this journey through musical
history has been any interesting, but porbably this could be for some of
you 313'ers ;)

Re: (313) czech cops went bonkers?

we had it televised on national scale here; it's just utterly unfair if it all
went like I read. I'd almost protest officially against the Czech government
;) in fact I should and make a clear stand, as just one individual, caring
about such festival spirit to be saved. Things like the Love Parade and
different tribal gatherings around created a spirit fo freedom at least for a
while, with no harm intended to anyone

(313) toda space (?)

2005-07-04 Thread De Block, Mario
hi all
once again i'll amaze you with one of my nostalgia-based questions;
having digged up a tape from a dutch radio show from around 95-96. there
was this amazing track in a landstrumm/vogel/sativae/mosaic etc style,
with lots of bleeps, peeps, and a massive ultrafunky bass groove, with
manic 'toda space, to-to-to-to-toda space' sample vox. could anyone make
a point or suggestion about who's been hiding beyond this record?
something like "city plus vision - 'space'" was what the host of the
show stated, but radio 65 was always tricky in the that track
announcements were always treated with a vocoder
i'd understand if no one couldn't leave a hint ;)

(313) chill out/attenborough

2005-06-20 Thread De Block, Mario
hi all
just a question in case someone was deeply into UK chill music around
the midst of the nineties: there once was this strange track including
Richard Attenborough comment on a river-bound Amazonian creature (don't
know what anymore), that intro'ed a chill out track around 94. Alex
Patterson used to play it around that time, but I never caught up what
or who was behind it. Anyone who does? I know, seems my reaction speed
is about ten years too slow but, that's why we speak about 'hard to
find' records, right? ;)

Re: (313) Hello 313, I am....

2005-06-20 Thread De Block, Mario
Name: Mario De Block
Born: 18/07/1971, Sint-Niklaas
Live: Antwerp
Job: government, biologist

Discovered house/techno: through MTV's PartyZone and Rave Radio, originally a
late friday night radio show on dutch radio 3. it included 'Clubland' from The
Ghetto Brothers and i was hooked. About the same age Moby's 'Go' sent shivers on
my spine. My first real identification with 'underground' music was with Time
Zone's semi-rebellious 'World Destruction'. In terms of electronic music in
general, I think Pink Floyd's 'Welcome To Machine' was the first track to really
alienate me

First techno party so far: Sun Electric/Biosphere/Robert Leiner at Pacific,
Antwerp, feb 94. Although i remember my first (of two) Love Parade experience in
1999, when you would drive out of Antwerp at 03.00 am and already at that time,
be recognized by likeminded people passing by ;)

Best club: Fuse (which is obvious for Belgians i think). You could enter the
spot in the most mundane kind of mood and be supplied with enough energy for 2
weeks. I remember the era where Aphex Twin and u-Ziq would play there and house
and techno music was still a 'family' thing you didn't share with just anyone ;)
I also remember I deliberately touched Richard D James and felt the magic for a
second ;)

Worst techno/house party so far: a party having Stacey Pullen/100% Isis/Marcello
and Koenie on the list in Sint-Niklaas. A totally out-of-context sports location
with mirror walls and utterly wrong-spirited posh people safeguarding the event.
But a boat party in Brussels with Johnny Fiasco at the deck counts in too here:
three people boarded, and the organizer committed suicide the next week. Some
people just never get what they deserve

Best techno party so far: Exil 98, at the seaside of Cherbourg, France. To me,
the french really have this unique, raw-edged kind of idea about parties (you'll
know about their 'free party culture' I guess). I'm not hinting at the
Astropolis party of 2000 when a visitor was killed though. Movement 2003 was
peaking creatively as well i think, but the fact that it was my first visit to
Detroit might have helped ;)

Best live act so far: probably the Chain Reaction crew feat Tikiman and Monolake
at the 6am dawning of a day in july at Astropolis. But Object at a Foton
'Capture' event in Brussels, 2001, with six Volkswagen car frames being used as
speakers, and totally absorbing micro-electronics going with it, tops my ranks
as well

Best dj set so far: Steve Rachmad at Tresor Park, july 1999?

Always was and always will be a fan of: Talk Talk.

Captivating techno experience advice: listen 'Red Angel' by Hallucinator,
stargazing or watching clouds pass by. It just makes me feel 'connected'

(313) hidden pearls - classics - unrecognized favourites

2005-06-03 Thread De Block, Mario
hi all
i just bear this question in mind for so long that i thought, i just
release it here ;)
has anyone here got tips on records that aren't commonly known but
really are amongst your personal classics, i mean, dance records that
you feel like determined your passion with house and techno (or
affiliated) but never seemed to have gained the apt attention they
probably deserved to your likings? if you wanna share, please do - i
would be so curious, as i'm sure i miss out on so many beautiful records
i never heard of

while i kind of re-organized my private stock of records i redetected
some of these records, and some of these, mostly originating from the
earlier nineties, are like:

-transform/'transformation (maurizio's mix) (see saw)
-powa/'hoods in da house (mousetrap)
-ricky r/'underground morality' (progressive motion)
-sabres of paradise vs therapy?/'nowhere' (remix) (A & M UK)
-ibrahim alfa/'machine code' (mosquito)
-marvo genetic/'fourth wave ep' (new world basics)
-wookey/'who's listening' (10th planet)
-biogen and ruxpin on uni:form (from iceland)
-neil landstrumm/'paskal ep' (mosquito)
and how i love still these frank de wulf tracks like 'arena'

et al!

thanks
Mario

ps: another thing i would like to know is: how many are we here at 313?
are we 1000 (in total)?

other great stuff to me was L'Altra ('Different Days'), and Littl Shyning Man's

(313) clues about 'dream dancing III'

2005-01-28 Thread De Block, Mario
sorry to ask but has anyone got any clue about 'dream dancing III', a
mix cd which i happen to have received for reviewing. it's got larry
heard (micro-gravity), 3 chairs (i wonder why), moodymann (should've
known) as well as sting (i burn for you), joni mitchell (the
dawntreader), patti smith (wave) and noni (be my (friend)) on
prescription on the playlist. how yin and yang can a record get ;)?
the only help it gives is a credit to both paul nickerson and francis
englehardt. probably a boston area member could serve a hint (as i
browsed the net and stopped by a party link hinting at 'man ray') but
i'm totally like *?*
thanks for helping me out

since a few years that 'At Les' meant 'At Lesley's', hinting at one of Carl's

said, simply, 'sex'.

try out 'deltidseskapism' maybe too on Source. it's beautifully lush post
Chain Reaction/Monolake urban poetry in motion for the highway on late
nights that will ease feelings of feeling lonely
and i stick to the idea Takashi wada might shine its light over your heart
too if you're into sweet ambient pop music without the dull stupid cupid
idea you might get about it, pigeonholing it that way. it's just thirteen
intricate japanese haikus. out on onitor.

on the extra-313 level i thought yann tiersen and shannon wright worked out
a blissfully encompassing album too (a self titled album on Ici D'Ailleurs)
and sure there's stuff like July Skies too (which fits the British
balladeers tradition, but more in ethereal ways)

Re: (313) stinson interview

2004-11-03 Thread De Block, Mario
well it wears me off, that kind of ethnic recuperation of 'music'. all is an
influence of another unless you lie suffocating
in your own oxygen-lacking biosphere, right. I remember presenting the topic
straight to Richie in 97 for an interview and
he just was cool with it, and replied that a week before he had been eating
with the other member of Drexciya. And what if
techno music integrated Kraftwerk? 'Don't tell me Kraftwerk were black' he
said. I was so glad. A black and white world is
what I truly detest, even if one day 50.5 % of America would decide we're
better off that way

i remember him almost literally blowing my mind when i tuned in on his show and
he played a track by ibrahim alfa called 'machine code'. what a pleasure to see
how low a person's aim to

especially that Ultrakurt 'M'Gell' track is so warm and deep! I wonder who's
behind that. Akufen sure did a good job to integrate some of the coolest
minimal dubby dodge around

Re: (313) Bad Day

2004-07-13 Thread De Block, Mario
i just discovered some ultra fine deep house mixes through www.pojirecords.com
- truly original spirit - house music with dj pope and oji. it's so fat what i
heard there on 88.9 fm Baltimore! The fabric mix of Stacey Pullen fires my
engines too in my car. Alternatively, if i feel sad the other day, there's
seemingly not any techno/electronica record which can me make reconnect again
with my power. When i need that i bow back to things like the Swans ('white
light from the mouth of infinity') or eventually a bit of intimate post rock.
ps today i discovered Grauzone's 'Film 2' - wow, my gosh these guys were ahead
of their time

could someone confirm whether that great DS release 'Volume I' on F Com
shortly after their divorce with Fnac (which included 'Jack On The Groove'
and some other acidic/ambiented tracks) had indeed Deepside aka Ludovic
Navarre hiding behind it? i think that release delivered a physically
exhausting moment in that early nineties house music ;)

Re: (313) Theo P

2004-06-29 Thread De Block, Mario
indeed; i heard from stacey p in an interview that moodymann also is a very
introverted person by nature so that he doen't like to be advertized even
and sometimes comes up playing at a party (in detroit) - and he does not
let many people into his private surrounding too. so it must be like a
personal story besides a consideration of how the music speaks for itself
as well. months ago someone on this list reported though about the blatant
way of how bodyguards acted stupid at a uk club when the three chairs came
up to play (and that behaviour coming with stars isn't what these guys are
about really)

Re: (313) Ampy Fiddles

2004-05-28 Thread De Block, Mario
when i saw him last year at movement detroit i was glad to see him sing
the 'war (what is it good for)' cover song. he got soul, it was in an
intimistic hi-tech soul stage context which was nice. later on that
evening carl craig got me into tears of joy and movement with detroit
experiment live - with half of the people surrounding me who were black,
and being in the city where it all started for these people.. that was
about absorbing my whole spirit

i can't understand really how someone like carl makes things happening
then like making 17000 dollars out of recloose and not paying correct at
all, as i hear (for one story)
i mean, what's that about?

Re: (313) Jockey Slut goes down

2004-05-28 Thread De Block, Mario
the cover design was sad maybe. too glossy or i don't know what, just too
corporate. before it was rough paper, which was better, as a warm touch
always is ;) i have a stack of old ones in my bedroom just because it's
cosy ;)
but in order for british humour, the colourful design overall, the ridden a
horse questions, all these only were sooh Jockey. it felt really very much
like a discovery trip through music to me, and that's rare i think. xlr8r
is cool too to me, but the new lay out is poor now - detail of course
