Re: (313) Books (was rough guide to techno)
While books are in issue i'd like to recommend a book i picked up from the music library at uni. It's a brand new book but from a major publisher so it shouldnt be to hard to track down. Its called Discographies : dance music, culture and the politics of sound By Jeremy Gilbert and Ewan Pearson.(Published: London ; New York : Routledge, 1999.) And I cant do it justice in a short description but its a critical / theoretical / cultural approach to many of the issues involved in dance music (which in their definition includes house, techno, soul, disco hip hop etc). Their analysis draws on contemporary critical theory using the work of Barthes, Kristeva, Derrida, Foucault et al. (while it utilizes these thinkers the book is always careful to explain the ideas that they are drawing on - you dont have to go and read the thinkers to understand the book) Its not a history but a very sophisticated analysis of the the role of music and dance music in particular in western culture. Of particular interest was a section where they looked at some of the reasons why western culture is so resistant to dance music. Its quite academic but very rewarding - i dont find it arrogant or pretensious either but i have some experience with this sort of writing. I'd recommend it to any one who is interested in 'dance music' in the broadest sense of the word. Its also very applicable to experimental electronic music. Any one who wants some more info feel free to email me. Peace Josh Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com

Re: (313) Stacey Pullen/ Black Flag
The other track I've heard it on is Coastal Commission's 'Rhodes Through Space' on Pacific Coast - beautiful orange vinyl from California which came out last summer, a really deep track... Yes, I've got this too, which actually prompted me to find out the origin of the sample, perhaps it was sampling Staceys track? When i interviewed him i asked Stacey Pullen if he had heard this track, he said he had and he liked it but he liked his own better... Im pretty sure he mentioned that he had sampled the vocal piece so im sure they would be from the same source rather than Coastal commission sampling Pullen. Re: (313) 2 track EP's / Moods Grooves
On the other hand, I've been told that the kdj on moods / grooves isn't actually that good (I guess when you compare it to other moodyman stuff). I'll still hear it for myself, if mike grant decides to repress the sucker. Don't be so quick to judge. Assess that one [everything] with your own ears. Mike has arranged for a few copies to get to Perth - should be there in a week or so. Kind of a recognition of stores that have been there since release one. For everyone who missed out on the kdj release be sure to look for the next few releases. Following the G Flame and Mr G is a various artists ep with tracks from Mike Grant, Alton Miller, Brett Dancer and Brian Harden. After that will be an EP from Da Sampla. *** Various Artists Soul : Often Imitated Never Duplicated [Moods Grooves MG007] Moods Grooves presents a deep selection of new millennium soul music from some of the most potent talent in house music - artists who bridge the divide between electronic sounds and organic grooves. Brian Harden Nubian Shuffle Nubian shuffle commands attention with its thumping kick drum and the jangle of reverberating percussion. Combined with the gritty maelstrom of percussion, the bubbling bass line creates an impression of the rolling surface of the sea on an overcast day. Deep chords pulsate like the undeniable tides, jazzy piano keys weave amongst the currents - sunlight emerging in the stormy sky. Harden gives a lesson in the combination of delicacy and force. Mike Grant Late Nite Swirling synths and deep moody electronics establish the steamy atmosphere that is at the heart of Late Nite. Soon a bassline convulses through the track like grinding bodies of sensual dancers. A throaty male voice complains late nite and Im all alone and a sexy female voice replies with seductive utterings. Surrounded by playful vibes and caressing synth chords, the sultry aesthetic is tinged with loneliness emphasizing the divide between the two voices Alton Miller First Light The slow tribal groove, airy synths, vocals, conga solos and interacting chords of First Light are all more organic than the sounds used in the other tracks. The smooth combination presents the listener with sounds that conjure the picture of a landscape: A beach sunset, the sands stirred by soft winds and bathed in serene light. Brett Dancer Delayed Reaction Brett Dancer debuts for Moods Grooves with Delayed Reaction. He utilizes snappy percussion and a swollen bassline juxtaposed with sweet melodic fluctuations - highly electronic sounds that accumulate into infectious harmonies. A futuristic harp chimes, encircled by fluctuating flute sounds, while changes in bass and percussion build momentum. The result is deepness with the force and potential to rock the most resistant of dancefloors. Da Sampla Samplaholic EP [Moods Grooves MG008] Anthony Shake Shakir appears in his Da Sampla guise to deliver the Samplaholic EP for Moods Grooves. Da Sampla serves up a quirky foray into eclectic sounds and elusive funk that sits in the undefined areas between house, techno, electro and trip hop. Pop Pop centers around the mute, sampled refrain of Pop, pop pop pop pop which recurs throughout the track. Accompanying this are fresh percussive patterns and loops, distinctive tech sounds, unique sounds and adroit manipulation of filtering and layers. The Rider In The Rider, interstellar tumbleweed rattles across the surface of a deserted space cruiser. Twitching robotic life-forms made of current and circuitry cry out in digital language, while synth stabs and ominous pads menace the listener. The rider heads for some unknown confrontation and dissolves into scattered frequencies. Lamented A slow hip hop break shuffles Lamented into action. A dramatic, old funk sample of strings and harp is soon introduced giving the track its emotional content. This sample is the centerpiece of the track and is varied throughout by changes in volume and clarity. The harp notes spring out of the lamenting strings pulling the listener from sorrow to happiness. __ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
Re: (313) 89x suggestions
also, check this out, all y'all in the d - 89x's craig keeps asking me what new cds he should buy to play on his show on saturday nights here. hey, when was the last time the 313 list got to request songs on the radio? get me suggestions, keeping in mind he doesn't have a turntable in the studio... Doesnt this raise the question of why, if they are interested in dance music, 89x doesnt have a turntable in the studio? Can't they afford a turntable? If craig is interested in playing dance music why doesnt he bring his own turntable into the studio. Why does someone have a radio show which plays dance music when they dont even know what to play? Shouldnt a dj know what to play? If 89x are interested in dance music they should commit to it by providing turntables and knowleadgeable djs ... sounds like they're really interested in something else. Let craig do his own homework and decide what to play - might be interesting to see what his taste leads him to. __ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

Re: (313) The instant globalisation of music?
I think Cyclones statements below should be taken as relating to the eastern states. With perth Ben Stinga is on the job at Complex records and we get stuff at the same time the rest of the world does. Its all imports of course... Josh In Australia it comes down to the majors not having a clue about how to market urban music. The base for urban music is working class and ethnic and the labels are mainly staffed by people of Anglo backgrounds into rock. The urban kids do buy stuff on import and huge sales are lost. Dance releases are often delayed too. By the time Inner City's Good Life came out through Festival last year, they had lost the momentum in the clubs. With local pressings it is sometimes a scheduling and fiscal thing - Donell Jones' LP is about to drop now but that is because it's a quiet time of year release-wise and less likely to get looked over. __ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

(313) Joe Claussell Review
More Reviews, Interviews and articles at http://dissonance.space.net.au/ Joe Claussell Language (IBADAN US) The first four bars of Joe Claussells Language album start off much like any other house record with a familiar 4/4 kick hi-hat pattern. The next bar explodes into a multi-layered conga groove and mix of bird noises, bass lines, strings and guitar chords. The rich organic sounds and undeniable groove explain why Claussell and the Ibadan imprint have become such an influential force in dance music. Jerome Sydenhams Ibadan label is renowned in dance music circles for its rich output of organic house music that combines world music influences and the more conventional elements of New York house and garage. Together with Claussells own Spiritual Life Music, these two labels have spearheaded a movement which has re-incorporated live instrumentation, organic instruments, African influences and more traditional notions of musicality into a genre previously dominated by samples, loops and electronic instruments. While this doesnt discredit the merit of the wealth of incredible material made using the old framework, it has broadened the aural and emotional palette of house music and taken the ever-mutating form in a new direction. Claussell is one of the pioneers of this sound and one of the most accomplished producers this album only serves to reinforce his reputation. The second track Git Wa is characterized by the distinctive notes of Jay Collins bamboo flute meandering over the percussion and bass groove. As the track progresses, Collins playing becomes more animated and is emphasized by the subtle introduction of rhythm guitar and keyboard strings. The mood shifts from placid to celebratory. Marco Polo is at once jazzy and tribal with bass-guitar licks and the intricate rhythmic interaction of grand piano keys with smatterings of percussion. Kryptic Elements is one of the stand out tracks. It begins with rolling tribal percussion, which is soon punctuated by a forceful bass drum. United, these two elements build towards the introduction of wallowing upright bass and moody violin notes courtesy of Miri Ben-Ari. The violin gradually gathers energy and intensity firing off startling patterns of short chords. Offset against the fluid bass the fiddle-like sounds generate a remarkable uplifting effect. Gbedu demonstrates the influence of Nigerian legend Fela Kuti (responsible for the afro-beat genre) matching closely his distinctive sound. The track is defined by the absence of bass drums, these being replaced by trap drums which leaves the bass line much more noticeable. Gbedu winds along, mixing electric guitar chords with the melting notes of the Fender Rhodes, occasionally punctuated by a saxophone blare. Earlier last year, Ibadan released an instrumental promo of the track Je Ka Jo. I loved the track then and the inclusion of a vocal version on the album had me equally excited. The track itself doesnt disappoint with its sensuous bass line, soaring Latin vocal, emotive cellos, delicate guitar and the sparing use of violins. Je Ka Jo is plaintive, soulful and drenched with emotion. Joe Claussell has put together an album that goes beyond pop hooks and shallow rock conventions. Language is an album with lasting appeal and significance it looks beyond national boundaries and draws influence from a global musical community. The result is a rich and varied array of sound with an equal focus on groove and emotional significance - spiritual life music. - Joshua Taaffe __ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

Why choice words? TO paraphrase he said: ' Your set was shit. I like my music deep and dark and your set was neither of those things. I have some of your records and they are great. But hows of disco loops just isnt good enough.' And what *did* he say in response? He said im sorry you didnt enjoy it. Someone else made similar disco loop criticisms and his response was i just wanted to show a different side of my personality.. or something like that. The truth of it is that his performance wasnt all that flash. Dave tells it well .. nice introduction and moments of niceness (mostly the few tracks he played off of his dj-kicks cd) the majority were piss poor disco loops. I can't speak for the other states but if you are serious about this music in Western Australia then the UR adage holds true - you should be shopping at Complex Records (142 William Street Perth). Compared with the chain stores (Central Station and Sanity) complex is 100x more dedicated to deep music. You also get a much better selection any way (and in a very timely fashion). If you hear about it on this list your guaranteed to be able to get it at Complex - not so reliable at Sanity As for the intimidation, I agree that it does happen to some extent but Complex has plenty of female customers and a comfortable atmosphere - its past the male only techno boffin stage. Moral of the story: Shop underground where you can. Not trying to be an advertisement but i strongly agree with the message on the UR sleeves. Re: (313) A Mayday MIX
DJing (especially with Derrick) can definitely show your true colors. It represents your tastes and your individual fomula for an hour or so of music. bring it up, bring it down, bring it back up, etc. blah blah blah. Unfortunately the true colors we saw werent so flash. From reading what you said below sounds like you got a much classier selection. I envy you. Theres no doubt of May's mixing skill but his track selection here left so much to be desired. Theres no point in trying to reconcile our different experiences but if you want a fuller explanation of why i was disapointed check my review at the web site: http://dissonance.space.net.au/issues/issue2/page5.htm thats why i referred people to the music - which cant be faulted regards josh http://dissonance.space.net.au/ its very detailed I've seen Derrick only once but it truly elightened me on how a DJ set could sound. He represented his own Detroit sound so well. He played some Hood (Envy), Mills (Skin Deep and Sirens), Saunderson (Veliocity Funk) and others that were in that same vein (even some nice jackin Chicago house). I was hopin he'd play Wiggin but no luck. It wasn't even what he played, it was how he played. Constantly grimacing in emotion at the sound of his knob twiddling (if youv'e seen him play: you know). He knew exactly what he was doing, working that fader like a hyperactive child. My point is that he represented HIS sound and definitely the Detroit sound by DJing. I know he schooled a lot of people in the true sound of Detroit. Something that needs to happen a lot more often in this city. in MPLS Myster The Mayday Mix IMO does not do total justice to his skills as a DJ.
