I've quoted the e-mail from Brian Behlendorf (who is the man behind hyperreal.org) on the subject. The big problem is people with yahoo.com e-mail addresses. The way EZMLM works is that it takes your e-mail and resends it to all the list members. Any mail server implementing DMARC rejects e-mails where the FROM: address is x...@yahoo.com, but it doesn't come from a yahoo mail server. This has resulted in people getting bounce notices from hyperreal. It has happened to me, and I don't even have a yahoo.com e-mail address. Bottom line is the hyperreal team is working on a solution, but this will likely screw up 313 emails for the near term. If you're an e-mail list wizard and can suggest a linux based mailing list server that can circumvent this stupidity, please let me and (br...@hyperreal.org) know. - If you list is still active and hasn't been swept away by folks moving to Facebook or whatever, you might have heard complaints from yahoo.comusers, or possibly even folks who have started to see strange bounces where yahoo.com senders are involved. This is due to a current hullabaloo about an anti-spam tech called DMARC and Yahoo's recent and strict implementation of it. http://thehackernews.com/2014/04/yahoos-new-dmarc-policy-destroys-every.html DMARC is a system designed to allow domain owners to specify policies and rules regarding how to deal with email from senders using that domain. For example, for an email with a From header like: From: Brian brianbehlend...@yahoo.com Yahoo published a policy that says unless that email came from Yahoo's servers, it should be rejected. This is a great anti-spam technique given that lots of spammers use yahoo.com addresses fraudulently (I guess?). But what it means for senders to mailing lists like those we host at Hyperreal, when that mail goes through Hyp and comes back to Yahoo's servers, it bounces. Not only that, but that Yahoo sender's mail bounces at Gmail and other mail service providers who implement DMARC. Those bounces can cause chaos, of course. Ezmlm/qmail will keep track of those bounces and at least let subscribers know they're missing messages and why, and shouldn't unsub those users automatically, but it still causes chaos. More details on technically why this is wrong: http://www.ietf.org/mail-archive/web/ietf/current/msg87153.html Yahoo appears to not get why this is a big deal: http://yahoo.tumblr.com/post/82426971544/an-update-on-our-dmarc-policy-to-protect-our-users There is no good fix here. Changing the From: header to say something like From: Brian Behlendorf via sfra...@hyperreal.org seems wacky, but it's what Threadable did, specifically for DMARC-checking recipients and DMARC-policy-publishing sender domains: http://blog.threadable.com/how-threadable-solved-the-dmarc-problem Sadly, though, no open source mailing list manager has implemented this well. Mailman seems to have implemented this partially, but no one's even talking about this for ezmlm and I doubt it'll happen. I've not decided whether to move the Hyperreal mailing lists to Mailman or something else, but clearly we need to move off of ezmlm anyways. I was hoping to be able to choose between a couple of them, but now that choice seems much more narrow (and not necessarily the best - Sympa was looking promising too). I agree with Joe on this one.I do accept that this issue is obviously not cut and dried though. For instance, I would be more receptive if someone came on here and posted stuff about moderately known to very obscure Chicago house, or whatever. So yes, what governs the idea of what type of music to promote on the list is quite a subjective set of considerations. I think the issue with pertin-nce, for me, is that it feels like for the last several years, the list has been bombarded by updates about a pet project, in tortuous detail, which hardly anyone else on the list is feeling. If that's what people want though, fair enough. I'm just saying it's not for me. At the time the song was produced, it was the tempo I was into. RE: (313) Kraftwerk: Concerts next year
£60 does seem like too much, but I would have paid it, if I could have bought a ticket quickly and efficiently. Tate clearly doesn't have state-of-the-art admin which can match the technocratic 'Gestalt' [pardon me for being poncy] of Kraftwerk. Even so, there's little doubt that Kraftwerk would only appear at a venue [nowadays] if the sound facilities were top notch. And that's what really matters, I think; so wishing all who will be attending an enjoyable time. Blackmarket Records going for the 'lost' / 'unreleased' tracks gambit. http://www.discogs.com/Juan-Atkins-Electric-Jungle-/release/4088314 At least one - 'Impulse' - has been released before though. It was out on the 'Infiniti Collection' on Tresor, in '96. In any case, they seem fine tracks to my ears, dated mostly by the obviously real-time nature of the audio quality; which of course is not an aesthetic fault. K
Re: (313) Ask 313
Seconded on Kevin Kennedy--I'm still appreciating well-crafted techno. Maybe one day I will stop. I'd also say the same about Kelli Hand; although I'd also remind [again] about K. Hand's sizeable repertoire of solid house, with the odd unsung classic thrown in too. Like this: Give it Me http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HjkvImPH3qosns=em As I typed this e-mail, I had a flashback to a not too dissimilar thread many years ago in which I also recommended K Hand. Sent: 17 Aug 2012 16:41 Despite discovering that film is basically a sedative for me since becoming a parent, I persevered through Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy last night. Part of the way through I couldn't shake the notion that I knew the name George Smiley from somewhere. Then it clicked. He was the original (313) list admin back in the day. From the time that I joined the list around '98, he never really posted much, but it occurs to me now that this was more likely to have been a pseudonym than a coincidence. Anyone know who George Smiley was? Just curious if it was one of the later (313) admins in disguise, or maybe one of the hyperreal people? Clearly not really important, but it just made me curious, especially given the fictional character. Cheers, Tristan Sent from my BlackBerry® wireless device

RE: (313) Carls Davis AKA Carl Craig
Hmmm 'Sound Sketches'...is one way of putting it. In fact, what these productions appear to be [unless I'm mistaken] are individual pieces made with perhaps a maximum of 16 channels. Additionally, judging by the tonal character of sounds used, I'd suggest that these were produced using real hardware - and I'd even go so far as to say I can recognise some proper analogue tones here too. When you're using hardware with a small studio, what you make often ends up sounding like 'sketches'. But they're not strictly that. Each of these pieces has just the kind of intrigue, warmth and apparent simplicity which I tend to like, from what I can tell so far. Thumbs up. Saw Derrick May and Rolando play at Showcase on Friday night. Interesting the venue was a boathouse by the Seine under Alexandre III bridge before it became a venue. The venue was odd - guys in button shirts, loafers etc and girls in short dresses and heels. There was a VIP section where people slammed down bottles of champagne. I think the place was a pick up joint. The drinks were super expensive (5 euro for water/ softdrink, 8 euro for a heineken, 12 for vodka redbull). However the guestlist is free if you sign up online and you arrive before 1.30 am. I signed up at 11pm and got an instant response back that I was on the list. Luckily you just have to show the door an email. I didn't meet the promotor, so I couldn't tell you how Derrick and Rolando ended up on the bill there. There were a few usual clubbing kids there though. I don't know who was on before Derrick, but it was just some techno, i think slightly more minimal style. I couldn't name any trax, I think Derrick played a few usual ones he always plays (but still welcome...) I haven't seen Derrick play this well in ages, despite the crowd. I think there were a few happy cheesy moments, but overall spot on, tight mixing, pretty good track selection. He played from 2 - 4 Rolando came on 4 and totally just smashed it out of the ballpark. Over the years I've noticed how uncompromising he is with the tunes and he just plays what he does best... slamming hard but funky at the same time...and in this case I think some of the crowd left (but could have been due to tiredness). I think he played a few things that totally reminded me of the older harder UR stuff but 'new'. I think there was new Red Planet in there... He played all of Jaguar, BUT the crowd didn't pick up on it really so in a way that was good because it was as though the song was just another track. Anyway he played until 6.20 am, and after that it was strange but nice to come out of the bottom of the bridge to see the lights still glistening on the Seine, and the sun just about to rise. Cheers! Well personally, I salute Frank for (finally!) coming over to the aquatic side. Even the act of setting out on such a gargantuan task in itself shows a degree of dedication to music which several people whom he respects think is great. That in itself is admirable in my view. I'm sure you'll find many more tracks to your liking. I'm not going to give faves myself - there are simply too many; and I say that fairly sheepishly, as it's true. I'd just remind people of some of the late side projects which were perhaps a little overlooked: not so much Other People Place; more like Lab Rat XL, Shifted Phases, Transllusion (especially the very odd second LP on Rephlex) and the very last LP - 'Hypothetical Situations' by Abstract Thought on Kombination Research. The reason I am doing this is because I find their music to be relatively tricky to wrap my head around in general, while so many of my friends consider Stinson/Donald to be among the best of their contemporaries. Specifically a lot of Stinson/Donald tunes sound particularly chaotic even to my modern ears well trained in noise, avant garde, and the repetitive loops of minimal classical (Steve Reich, Philip Glass) and techno music. I wondered if completely saturating my ears with only their music would change my opinion/enlighten me to their supposed genius at all. To date I am about halfway through the project based on mostly casual subway ride listening, and I've not been as diligent in avoiding the fast forward button as I'd hoped I could be. It's really difficult to stick to one artist who produced a pretty consistent style of music without listening to anything else for such an extended period of time. I do occasionally give my ears a bit of a break and allow myself to hear some non Stinson/Donald tunage. To date Wavejumper from their 1995 Aquatic Invasion EP remains my absolute favorite Drexciya tune: http://youtu.be/imKh_TKqHt4 As a side note, the name I've given this experiment - Drexciyan Immersion Project - is a kind of funny nod to the sci-fi underwater mythology that Drexciya built around their music/built their music around. As BMG says in the RA piece, there is a tendency to think that what happens on one weekend in Detroit is how it is all the time. Another tendency is to pay homage to the Belleville Three (usually without delving into the breadth of what they actually accomplished) and forget all that has happened since. Or to focus entirely on one aspect like minimal, etc. Like Motown, Detroit techno has had global influence. But as the RA oral history of the festival last year showed, the mayor of Detroit, Dennis Archer, did not even know about it when the festival idea first surfaced a dozen years ago. The surface view of Detroit electronic music ranges from total hype to total invisibility. The reality is different, much deeper and richer, and ties back to the history of a city that has traced to a stronger degree than most the trajectory of the American economy. fh - I would like you to expand on the idea of Detroit being 'hyped.' I remember picking this up at HMV one afternoon in June 1998. Then putting it down. I thought it was extravagant to buy it when I already had the LP. Also the tracks missing off the CD are all available elsewhere in the catalogue. The completist in me regrets not owning it but, not much. I arrived in time to hear TP on the main stage bring Strings of Life into a remix of Patrice Rushen's Haven't You Heard (I like Steve Rachmad's A Lot of Love on Spiritual/Outland more but this version was slower and more in line with the mix). Terrence was in a vocal mood, singing along with several tracks. And he played Blow Your House Down. Couldn't ask for more. I liked DJ Three (Chris Milo) on the Beatport stage playing an unhurried set of solid acid-tinged stuff. Boo Williams and GU were unfortunately stuck in the underground stage; when will Paxahau finally admit house just doesn't work in there? But I spent most of the day at the Made in Detroit stage. Just missed seeing Franki Juncaj (formerly the friendly guy at the register at Somewhere in Detroit and also a quite good DJ), but heard a lot of District 909 (Tim Baker and HD Substance). Tim Baker has had some interesting releases but I wasn't sure what to expect, and what they deliver is basic stripped down live techno sliding back and forth between really tough and cool and somewhat aimless. Next up was DTM on 5 turntables, that's right, count 'em, 5x5. It could have been a classic pileup but actually it was kind of fun. First up was Throw as the soundbed, which is the obvious way to get started and it went from there. Layers and layers of tracks'n'scratches. Then DJ T-1000 or as known among these parts, Alan. You know what he does and that's bring it up to a high level of intensity and lets it roll. As good as AO was, Claude Young finally had the time, the space and the crowd to really throw down -- nearly two and half hours worth. Everyone I talked to including the man himself felt the inspiration. It's not just about playing the great old records, as great as they remain, or the great new ones, still fresh and not struggling against familiarity. It is about playing great music with purpose and precision. It's what Detroit techno at its best truly represents. And now some comments on the festival itself (I'll save my rant about afterparties for another time). With a year away due to work requirements last year, I have a little more perspective perhaps than I used to, having been to all ten from 2000 to 2009. First of all, what's working right? Paxahau has a business model that actually works. They are putting serious, serious cash into upgrading the sound, the staging, the lights and all the little things needed to make this work better every year. Even the underground. The big improvement to me was the decision to get rid of the tents for the Beatport and Made in Detroit areas and invest in real stages. The music selection is somewhat less adventurous than I suppose could be imagined, but it is a pretty decent job for what it does. There are too many overrated European superstar-or-wannabes on stage for my taste, but they bring in a crowd (see business model). On the other hand, I can complain about Fatboy Slim or whatever but they also bring in Adam X who rocks the box. I didn't feel this year like there were periods where nothing decent was on offer, which was the case in previous years ago for considerable parts of the weekend. And I want to call Paxahau out for praise very specifically for one thing: the strong commitment to live performances across all genres. They not only book creatively on that, but they obviously put serious effort into providing the staging and support needed, from equipment setups to sound and lights. The ticket prices are reasonable given the size and breadth of the event. The lines were better run this year, and amidst the usual carney fare they brought in Slows -- epic win. The not so good parts. Well, obviously it's a white people festival now. I'm not sorry to say it so bluntly. It is in the city of Detroit, but it does not represent Detroit the city. Why? This gets back to business model. When the festival was free, the city did come, and not just because it was free, but because the proportion of known Detroit talent was higher. The organizing of the festival was drama supreme in the early years, but out on the walks and in the stage audiences, it was inclusive for all of Detroit and the region. So Movement has evolved from being a somewhat disorganized civic celebration to being more of a destination event for the suburbs (see business model). Give Paxahau credit, the Made in Detroit stage is an explicit nod to where this all comes from and provides (some) space for the various threads of Detroit techno and house for the last 30 years

[I think you know all the following Denise. It's just for the record and for those who don't know! ;-) There are several well-known Detroit electronic music records which unconventionally play from 'inside-to-out'. Many of them were cut by renknowed cutting engineer, the late, great Ron Murphy at NSC. http://fwd4.me/mEe Here's one which plays like that: Drexciya - Deep Sea Dweller http://fwd4.me/mEg In fact Mr. Murphy was behind a number of unconventionally cut records of the same ilk, including this one, which was one of NSC's more well-known 'double-groove' cuts: Hidden In Plainsight EP http://fwd4.me/mEa Ken -Original Message- From: Michael Elliot-Knight [mailto:michael.elliot-kni...@fallon.com] Sent: 05 November 2010 16:06 To: Denise Dalphond Cc: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: (313) Research question about vinyl manipulation I've never heard of it being done and I can't imagine it would work very well - any adhesive along the seam would stand a good chance of seeping into the grooves thus producing an obstacle for the needle Also, having seen enough microscopic images of vinyl record grooves I can tell you that the grooves of two different records will not line up well enough for the needle to track. Once the needle hits the seam it's going to bounce out of that groove. At best you could, if very lucky, find two records that might work but you'd have to use a microscope to find a matching point between the two at any point along their grooves. What more, if you were lucky enough to get the needle to track at one point I would bet money that upon reaching the 180 degree rotation the groove won't match and the needle will bounce. Ken -Original Message- From: kent williams [mailto:chaircrus...@gmail.com] Sent: 30 September 2010 14:17 To: list 313 Subject: (313) Aarron Carl has passed Those of you up early in the US who checked Facebook or Twitter already know this, but Aaron Carl Ragland died overnight, having just started chemotherapy for a just-diagnosed cancer. This is a terrible loss for Aaron's family, Detroit, and the world. I didn't know the man well, other than a couple of long conversations earlier this year on the phone. I was impressed by his drive to make things happen in Detroit, not just for himself, or for Detroit Dance Music (though they were things he loved DEEP, second only to his family and friends) but the next generations of kids. Aaron was openly, flamboyantly gay man who came out at a time and place where it was a lot easier to stay on the down low. The Detroit dance scene is a lot more open and accepting than the wider culture, but it's a brave man who's willing to be honest with the whole world the way AC was. Aaron presented himself transcended his sexuality, it represented an openness and honesty that's an example for everyone. Aaron was genuine, authentic, true, no bullsh*t. And he was funny as hell too. Inexplicably, he was afraid of trees -- can you watch this and not laugh? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QJVdtEzUJII The W.A.R.M.T.H. Wallshaker Compilation he put out last December was a great example of what Aaron Carl could do -- bring people together under a positive vibe. That's what I'll be listening to today, and if you don't yet have it, you can listen to the mix I made of it: http://www.cornwarning.com/chaircrusher/Chaircrusher-WallshakerMix.mp3 AC I love you, and I hope you're slapping skin with Ron Hardy and Arthur Russell and James Stinson about now, and they've got your crate by the tables waiting for you.

But he's still a very skilled and talented producer and an excellent DJ to boot. To me that far out-weighs what I see as wrongheadedness about the validity of different production techniques. And even that is his point of view, which he's entitled to. I'm certainly not going to insult him as if he's evil or stupid simply because of his views, as some people on RA think they've got a right to. Whatever. Ken It is always the case that people with venal motivations can parlay a small amount of talent and a ruthless instinct for self-promotion into a career. They can appeal to an audience that likes their art to be a useful lifestyle accessory, that are scared of art that affects them deeply and changes their view of the world. They want their prejudices confirmed, not challenged. That social contract, between the panderer and the pandered to, is the most common form of 'art.' It's a fraudulent transaction -- they promise you more than they deliver, and people accept it at face value. I'd contend that they're being cheated. They're being uncritical consumers of a substandard product. It's the difference between a proper meal made from scratch and something that comes frozen or in a tin. But you can't force people to take their own lives seriously. Which is the long way round to this: It's not the technology, it's what people do with it. There are loads of people content to use it to perform the same cheap tricks over and over, but it doesn't mean there's nothing deep that can be done with it. Case in point: PanSonic. They sure don't make deep house music, but they used their laptops to make sounds so deep you can feel the magma flowing. Ask Franz Schubert or Charlie Parker... There's too many contradictions in the piece, he talks about real musicians in one breath and then about programming a drum machine in the next, which kinda voids his arguement about learning a trade because using a drum machine sure does bypass years of learning. Americans seem to be much more obsessed with authentic and real - like Bruce Springsteen is their poster boy! Techno for me is about saying fcuk off to those rockisms. The whole history of electronic music and sound design really interests me and when you read about how this guys struggled, you can't help but pay respect. And as far as I'm aware, all the equipment in the world still won't write you a good track. And sure, Beatport's top 10 is a crock of shite but worrying about that is like trying to influence the weather by making a cup of tea! m PS I also wonder if he's ever seen Kraftwerk live :)

You'll be lucky if you even manage to wake a few folk up with your comment Mike! Nowadays, there's no way will you be able to start a flame war of the kind we used to enjoy so well in days of yore. I must say Greg, you give good 313. Apropos Sarah Gregory, some related trivia... She was married to the lead singer of 'chart-topping' UK synth-pop act Heaven 17. She took the name of Glenn Gregory; her maiden name was Sarah Osborne. Other juicy '80s bands she played in included Belgian-based Allez Allez who made a wicked track called 'Flesh Blood' ...
