(313) Laurent Garnier
Had the pleasure of seeing and hearing this legendary icon who one of my friend's was quoted saying Is he a best kept secret or something?... As far as DJs go, this has got to be the only guy I can think of that can incorporate Jungle, Reggae, Breaks, House, Techno, Industrial...into one set with programmed flawless ease. Dammit the guy played prodigy Out of Space and house classic Jack Your Body. His flow is so on point that even when employing all these different styles of music...I never once felt a discontinuity. I was with him for his whole 5 hour journey and I was thoroughly blown away! I think Carl Cox has a style a lot like Garnier and is an excellent mixer! But I don't think he has the same range. Seriously though, someone made a comparison between Laurent Garnier and Carl Cox. Well Ive not heard Laurent play many times, but Ive heard Carl play plenty back when he used to live down here in Brighton and I never ever rated him. Sure he was a pretty good mixer and could work 6 decks and stuff, but I always found his track selection to be pretty uninspired. Like Laurent Garnier he prided himself on being able to jump between all manner of different genres, but that in itself does not a great DJ make when the choice of tunes within those genres are pretty obvious or plain average. --- I said this: I think Carl Cox has a style a lot like Garnier and is an excellent mixer! RE: (313) books on techno: more brilliant than the sun
Thanks for pointing out some books to read on the evolution of Techno. I found that one of the most amazingly written books on electronic music from the beginning is: Generation Ecstasy: Into the World of Techno and Rave Culture; by Simon Reynolds. The opening chapter which he refers to as the beginning is about the Detroit Three: Kevin Saunderson, Juan Atkins and Derrick May I found his writing style to be quite entertaining. He charts the timelines of Techno, House, Garage, Trance, Jungle, Gabber...etc. from North America to Europe. There are a lot of quotes from electronic music pioneers which he uses liberally throught his work. He covers not only partying, but radio stations, pressing, labels as well as style (like the mode of dress, and paraphenlia...) A great read IMHO. cheers K. _ MSN 8 helps eliminate e-mail viruses. the records lists at the end of each chapter are worth the book alone IMHO. Definately agree with that. He has written a lot of works on this subject, I think this is the best. [313] Minimal Techno
I have been getting a lot more into minimal techno sets of late and recently had the pleasure of listening to Pantytec here in tdot. What a wikkid set these guys threw down. So much funk. Zip and Sammy Dee did answer the question (which was brought up by a friend of mine recently) that minimal techno is way may more interesting when there is the element of funk. I also find myself enjoying european and detroit electro way more than I used to a year ago. My appreciation for both styles have evolved together which leads me to conclude that they are inextricably linked. The next set that I will have the pleasure of enjoying is Legowelt (Holland). Who are some of your best list minimal techno djs/producers? cheers k. _ Join the worlds largest e-mail service with MSN Hotmail. http://www.hotmail.com - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: [313] reminder, bunker nyc...3/19
Let me know your review of Legowelt's set in NY. I won't get to hear him until this weekend, but have been looking forward to it since I was told he will be in Toronto... anxiously Kim _ MSN Photos is the easiest way to share and print your photos: http://photos.msn.com/support/worldwide.aspx - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
RE: [313] Minimal Techno
On the minimal tip, I definately have to give Todd Sines his props. Charles Noel is right up there. Two hard working and very talented djs! Todd has released tracks on minimal labels such as Peacefrog, 21/22 Corp. and Perlon. My new minimal master! One my fav tracks being Intrusion on the Null EP. Re: [313] Steve Bug
He spun a 2hr set here in Toronto last Thursday (Valentines Day). It wasn't what I was expecting since some of the tracks I heard from him were way more on the tehno tip than what he spun in tdot. His set was really housey, and if I expected to be listening to a house set, I would have been more into into. I still think he is a good Dj and a great producer from what I have heard. I would love to hear him spin a more techno set. How was his set on Monday night? Re: [313] re: online mp3 Mixes
Seth probably has the same problem that I have which is why we request specifically mp3 mixes. The problem is called the FIREWALL. No RAM files, no Real Audio. It has to be able to use the native media player or we can't listen. Seth, have been meaning to poll the same question, but you did it before me, thanks. I got some pretty good work listening/grooving material. cheers K. _ Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: http://mobile.msn.com - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: [313] re: online mp3 Mixes
I am on a WAN and the Administrator is NOT going to allow me to access a new mix that I just have to hear! Seeing that the rule of most comoanies is that they own all the systems and if it not work related...NO ACCESS FOR YOU! Of course there are ways of getting around this problem (proxy settings being one). Until I beat the Firewall issue though...mp3 mixes for me please! Re: [313] Trainwrecks/blue notes
Semantics is definately important here...when I hear a trainwreck it is named so because that is what it sounds like...trainwrecks are not beautiful...they sound BAD! However, I am in total agreement that an unintentional error can become something quite nice! Anybody wanna venture on what you would call that? Blue note coined for a jazz musician's mistake sounds way more pleasing than a trainwreck! _ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: [313] Detroit-Toronto by bus (?)
The festival you are all referring to is called UP Festival which has been going for a mere two years. If is a free street party featuring all House DJs from. It is also a charity evnt to raise money (this year) for the Homeless and for the Food Bank. The date of this year's festival is June 9th. Last year, it was May 24th weekend (Canadian holiday). the iDance rally only took place as a protest and there are talks of it becoming a regular event, but has not fully gotten under way yet. WEMF is mid july, so I don't think it waould me that festival you are speaking about. Peace K. _ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com.
