Re: (313) OT: earbud recommendations?
jr makes you feel like a criminal for returning something that isn't even opened!!! Update to this week-long drama: The Shure E4c-N earphones arrived in the mail. Though they are good earphones, they don't really hold a candle to the Shure SE100s. The Shure E4c-N has much more noticeable bass, but the mids and highs aren't as crisp and clear as the SE100s. Feeling disappointed and thwarted, I decided to return the E4C-Ns and buy the SE100s once again. This time, I experimented with the different earpads for the SE100 and found the right one for my ear. The increase in bass and overall richness was immediate. The bass now is very clear and I'm very surprised that these earphones are able to produce some of the really low bass in certain dubstep or techno tracks. So my final assessment is that the Sennheiser CX300s and the Shure E4C-N are pretty similar in quality, though the CX300s were a little less expensive. Either of them would be a very good replacement for the Sony MDR-EX71SL earphones. However, the SE100s win the prize for clarity and richness!!! It is really worth paying the extra money for such a marked improvement in the sound quality!! Making the effort to try the different earpads will pay off when you find the ones that fit your ears in just the right way. {}0+| darnistle wrote: Funny that this topic should come up at this time. My favorite Sony MDR-EX71SL earbuds developed a short in the cord last week, so it was time to buy another pair. The last set lasted for more than two years, which is really good considering that I use them daily for hours at a time and am not as careful with them as I should be. This time, I decided to try some other brands and took the plunge and bought the Shure SE100s from a store in town. At $100 it was expensive, but I was curious to see if there was any significant increase in sound quality. The clarity and imaging were astounding!! Truly!! Listening to tracks I was well familiar with was like hearing them anew: all sorts of nuances I'd never heard before were suddenly very clear. The earphones also did an excellent job of blocking outside sounds. I felt like I was in a wonderfully exquisite aural cocoon. My only complaint about them was the lack of bass, even though I tried pushing the earpads further in my ear. It helped somewhat, but not as much as I would have expected. I thought to put on one of the alternate earpads to ensure a better fit, but had trouble getting the pads off. I didn't want to risk ripping the rubber cover since I wasn't sure if I'd keep the earphones. I never got to experiment to see if using different earpads would help with the bass problem. I convinced myself to return the earphones to the store because of the bass issue, but the sheer clarity of the sound haunted me for days after. Instead, I bought a pair of Sennheiser CX300s, which sounded just as good as my old Sonys. They aren't really sound isolating, but they deliver a good, even sound. No complaints at all. Problem is that those Shure earphones were SO good, I couldn't deny the massive difference in quality. Now that my ears got a taste of the really good stuff, they weren't havin' the Sennheisers, so I went online this evening

Theo This should be said: Techno is a lot bigger than Berlin-minimal, and one could remain a Techno DJ and never touch a track from Richie or Magda's USB drive. There are many DJs -- Claude Young, Dan Bell, Rob Hood, Buzz Goree, Ken Karl Meier, Alan Oldham, Mike Huckaby come immediately to mind -- who stay more on the techno side of the fence and still manage to do interesting, dynamic, butt-moving sets. And of course, all of the people mentioned above will drop a house record if it fits what they're doing. What I'm finding interesting is that it's not just that mnml DJs are changing their tune(s) but that promoters are booking guests who would have been outside of their comfort zone 18 months ago. For instance the Run parties here in London were ostensibly quite mnml (and/or minimal) and now they have Alton Miller booked for their next party. I really wouldn't have seen that coming. Have a look at their past guests and you'll see what I mean: http://www.runsounds.com/events/ Another thing that I think might be unique about this is that it's a younger crowd who are now being fed unapologetic deep house. And quality older house as well. This trend has nothing to do with being the most current (yet). God knows in what horrible way this will get compartmentalised and repackaged over the next year or two if the trend persists, but it's an interesting moment Right Now, for whatever that's worth. From what I know, certain people in Detroit with influence already expressed their views (ie take a break this year and plan carefully) and Paxahau chose to go on. These people are still supportive of Paxahau, which is great. In turn, I just feel we should now be at least be supportive of Paxahau, rather than write off and whinge about everything. If you feel so strongly about the steps they have taken, why not just write to them directly? If the community on the ground in Detroit is being supportive, then at least we should be too. Re: (313) demf 2008
i think we can all agree that it's not going to be like the first couple of DEMFs and I really think that we should all stop bitching about how it could be or why it is. IT'S NOT GOING BACK THAT WAY SO GET OVER IT. I have long given up on wishing for the old DEMF and I just look forward to use it as a reason to get out to Detroit, and of course I could always go out there whenever I want but it's just a good reason. I like seeing Detroit in a happy state, it's good to see people get together just to hang out, it's good to have a reason just to go that weekend. I can still go to the after parties, still catch the older/ classic detroit artists and djs on their own small stage, and that is fine with me. Maybe I will skip the large stages with their happy commercial or miimalist popular crap, but if that's what gets the festival going, then so be it. Sure a lot of people just to come to listen to other types of electronic music, and so be it. I'm glad people are trekking out to Detroit, on the very least level that's a great thing because it's not like there is a lot going for the city, and it needs trade and commerce to flow into the city, however that may be. Obviously, it is better to run an event where there is potential to make $, rather than run it at a loss just to cater for us fanactic hardcore fans, and I think that is something that I have come to realise. Sure it sounds defeatist, sell out, whatever you call it, but it's damn hard putting on an event and I'm happy that they have one at all. And I'm sure they can run it better, but man, I think we all go tto realise that it's not just about us on this list, but a broader audience out there. And if it can bring in some much needed $ into Det, then I'm all for it. m On Thu, Mar 13, 2008 at 12:44 AM, JT Stewart [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Yes we all come to Detroit, the birthplace of more than a few distinctly American musical styles, to celebrate the music of elsewhere. Identity is important, especially in this age of omni-culture and accelerating hegemony. Identity is more important in the long run than being just another venue, and it's certainly of inescapable importance when it comes to Detroit. Imagine a blues festival set in the Mississippi Delta, the birthplace of the blues, with a line-up dominated by Stevie Ray Vaughn and BB King style blues? I'm sure some locals would be excited to see some exotic music, good for them, but that sentiment is rather worthless in the face of preserving and celebrating the area's preeminent culture and identity. The festival has become a celebration of popular (dance music) culture, which is an obvious move. It's understandable. It's easier. It's safer. However I don't think the approach has borne out better results than the old Festivals which were actual celebrations of Detroit style dance music. But I'm glad they are managing the festival competently, unlike previous incarnations, so that it can continue and perhaps find it's own identity and mojo again. Re: (313) demf 2008
noted. but this whole thread has been so taxing, and i feel it is the same comments on this list every year. I am over it, that's why I endured the long list of whinging that goes on this list before I posted. sure it can be improved, why not. but what I realised, esp after going last year, and having spent this year in the states, is how hard it is just to get stuff going, planning an event, raising $ getting attendance etc, and while it's all well and good about hoping for the best, I think we can all cut Paxahau some slack and let the festival improve gradually. things can always be better but I don't know if you all realise how negative you all sound, as if it was better if it wasn't happening at all. On Thu, Mar 13, 2008 at 1:39 AM, JT Stewart [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: i think we can all agree that it's not going to be like the first couple of DEMFs and I really think that we should all stop bitching about how it could be or why it is. How about you get over it and let people talk about what they want to and you don't try and shout them down? Especially since it's actually about Detroit for a change? I don't think anyone is wishing for the old DEMF, we want a new DEMF that improves. We wanted that even after the first year. It's quite an assumption to assert the festival has been a loss or a success because of the fanatic or popular appeal of the lineup. I think you are wrong. I think this is simply an easy and safe approach that mis-judges the audience. We exchanged headz for ravers, and I think it doesn't take a brain surgeon to tell you which audience is more loyal and less transient. Europeans were everywhere in the early years. Attendance was exponentially larger, even taking into account the flawed surveys. It was readily apparent that attendance was much larger, and sure many would not have been there had it not been free, but don't underestimate the appeal of an event that let's a population celebrate their own culture. I'm sure as many people would have paid for tickets then as do now, if not more. The big sponsors were there. The media interest was there. The festivals were simply mis-managed, and opportunities were missed. Spending was unchecked. Even small artists were actually paid generously! There has been all sorts of restructuring. You're jumping to conclusions that I really don't think are substantiated. You don't have to assume that because things are the way they are that's the best way they can be. A little criticism does not mean you are renouncing the whole thing. I am thankful for the festival and everything it brings to Detroit and all the people that work to make it happen. FWIW 2006 was a super year from all I heard (I didn't make it)...But I heard just as across-the-board that last year was dismal.

I agree with Kent. Selling out is about compromising values. I will also add - An artist has to eat - and it's great that they have other means of income other than just make records. Better something cool like an adidas ad, than say flipping burgers or being stuck in an office. Face it, not much $ is being made on making records. I have NFI really about a grammy. if you get nominated, it'd be sweet to get a chance to win one. Friday, December 14 Stop Progress. Max Pask welcomes Kevin Saunderson 10p / $10 / (Detroit techno, house, and a little electro) For nearly a decade in the beginning of his life, Kevin Saunderson called Brooklyn his home. But, while we certainly wouldn't mind claiming the legendary techno producer as our own, we can't. At the age of nine, Saunderson moved to Detroit, and not too long after, he—alongside high school buddies Juan Atkins and Derrick May—became one of the founding fathers of techno. His career is too vast to include in a short listing, so we'll just mention a few things: Inner City (whose megatrack Good Life is ubiquitous), E-Dancer, and KMS Records. Re: (313) Artist Compensation?
At the small end of the scale I think it really depends on the label's business model and (hopefully) what works out best for both parties. Things I have seen are (and not mutually exclusive) * copies of the work instead of $ * outright payment - although I would never advise anyone to 'sell' but instead, to 'licence' * royalties from collecting agencies * a cut of the $ from sales All of these things are subject to manufacturing and/or distributing costs as well. (well you need to work out what you want - a distribution deal, or a manufacturing deal, or both?) I have seen some pretty bad contracts from indie labels so I wouldn't just automatically assume that an indie label will give you a better deal... This is just some general advice. I'm sure people on the list have had more specific experience and can enlighten you further! Cheers Mel ps i 'm sure I've missed a few things here but sleepiness rules for now. On 10/25/07, Arturo Lopez [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Having never been on the producer side of things, I'm curious if anyone can illuminate some of the basics when it comes to artist compensation for small record labels (the kind most of us buy our vinyl from). So if Producer A writes a track, how does he/she sell it to a small electronic label? Is he/she paid a one-time fee for the track or are they given a percentage based on how many prints of the track sell? I'm interested in how this works with our music and small labels, not the rest of the music world. Maybe some of the people on here who've been producing for years can illuminate this for us? Obviously the focus should always be on the ends (good music) and not the means (how much $$ am I getting for it), but this seems like an interesting topic to me -Arturo Lopez-

Thanks for the report. UR gave us the best non-typical NYC weekend... best ever! My feet really hurt and I have no one else to blame except well I will blame Skurge for putting on one great record after another (the APT night) and Dex for doing the same thing (the Beach Party night). Probably the best thing about it was on both nights people just really got into it, they were challenged by the non typical NYC chessy crap and just took it on board. :) I have some pics. http://flickr.com/photos/mymachines/sets/72157601374806335/ - at APT http://flickr.com/photos/mymachines/sets/72157601388766200/ - The Beach Party m

Last time I was at Love I felt like I was in a room full of fresh first year college students (freshman..?)... and there were about 5 other people there who were actually NOT students... and I think 1/2 the kids were mixing disco biscuits with alcohol and just totoally trashed... it was a one of the breakbeat science parties. So without further ado, it's this tune: http://www.discogs.com/release/297886 except it's not the matty mixes and wasn't released on peppermint jam. It's the original and the sting international mix. The a side is the sting intl mix with a version. The b side is the original and a song called beneath. the original is a much spacier mix with the same vocal and heavier kick and all kinds of changing pads floating eerily around. The mix you liked was the sting international mix where evidently they did all kinds of live instrumentation as there are drum prog, piano, trumpet, sax, bass and keys credits on the label. It doesn't really say what the label is that's releasing it. The runout etching says DTX006 (dance trax maybe?). anybody good with catnumbers? Oh and the label doesn't say featuring soy sos on mine either (or any of the other stuff I've got by them come to think of it) it says MKL vs. SOY SOS ...way harder. Plus, I wonder how this SOY SOS character feels about being all of a sudden relegated to featuring. Versus sounds so much more like you're a peer. Featuring sounds like someone's putting you on. Just thinking and drinking... whatevs... k mwnb a crap! Right after I finished writing all of that, I got the bright idea to search for the full mkl vs. soy sos (searching for mkl alone yielded the above result) and found the dang record on discogs.
