[313] Current 02.02.02 (Dimension 5 feature)

2002-02-03 Thread Michael Taylor
Hello,

For this weeks show I played an hour's worth of selections in the deeper
Detroit and Ambient Techno vein. For the second hour I had the fortune
to play the new Dimension 5 album in its entirety. Alien Artforms is a
combination of Detroit influenced broken beat Techno and straight up
Detroit style Techno. If you are into Delsin style machine soul, Alien
Artforms will not disappoint you. The record will be hitting stores in
March. For more info:

[313] Current 01.26.02 (Alan Oldham Interview)

2002-02-02 Thread Michael Taylor
Hello,

Last week we had an informative interview with Alan Oldham of Pure Sonik
Records. We discussed his experiences in the music industry and his
perceptions of Detroit. Alan has a new project called The Sexy
Adventures Of Orietta St. Cloud. The Comic comes with a compilation CD
with exclusive tracks by Jeff Mills, Rich Hawtin, Stewart Walker, Brain
Zentz, Marco Passarani, and Alan Oldham. The project will be shipped in
a 12 sleeve and should be available in stores this week.

Alan will also be relaunching his first label, Generator Records, later
this year with a label retrospective. Generator will follow up with new
releases shortly after the retrospective. Also be on the look out for
Pure Sonik 17: Neutra EP. Neutra will feature three banging floor
tracks, and a jungle track on the b2. Neutra will be in stores in March
and white labels are currently available.

http://www.puresonikrecords.net/

This week I am going to do a feature on the new Dimension 5 album, Alien
Artform. This is precisely the record I have been looking for, it
combines the elegant grace of Detroit Techno with an advanced rhythmic
sensibility. It takes the conventional sonic palette of Detroit, Roland
percussion, analogue washes and digital bleeps and twists the familiar
into a new and interesting shape. I cannot say enough good things about
this record. I am going to play the entire album on the show tonight.
Alien Artform will be available in stores in March.

[313] Current 01.05.02 [e2-e4 album feature]

2002-01-11 Thread Michael Taylor
Hello,

Last week Current did a feature on Manuel Gottsching's seminal 1984 release
e2-e4. After an inspiring tour as guitar player for Klaus Schulze ,
Gottsching recorded this album in one pass in his home studio on December
12th 1981. Shortly after completion, a tape was send to Klaus Schulze. Three
years later Schulze decided to start his own independent record company,
Inteam, and in 1984 e2-e4 was released for the world to hear. Although this
recording is 21 years old it does not sound dated in the least. A work of
inspired minimalism, this recording provided part of the conceptual basis
for the work of modern producers such as Carl Craig and Moritz Von Oswald
and Mark Ernestus of Basic Channel. The second hour of last weeks show was
used to play this seminal recording in it's entirety.

Also, I would like to take this time to mention that Alan Oldham will be
making an appearance on Current on 26th of January.
Alan will be in the studio to discuss his new project The Sexy Adventures
Of Orietta St. Cloud. We will also be discussing the dance music industry,
the state of Detroit Techno, international dj'ing, and life in general. Alan
Oldham always has interesting and provocative thoughts about life and music.
This interview will be both entertaining and informative, I hope you will
join us on the 26th.

I totally agree! computers are totally ruinging electronic music! I mean,
where's the TALENT in pushing some buttons, or twisting a knob? whatever
happened to what a few guys, ONLY IN DETROIT, did 12 years ago, like PLAY
THE DRUMS, or LEARN THE GUITAR?

the funny thing about this statement is that most of the innovators from
this time period in Detroit and Chicago that still have any musical standing
today were playing traditional instruments before they started making dance
music. It is funny that no matter how much technology we get, you still
cannot get around the fact that you have to write good music.

another issue the whole mp3 things raises is that it does not provide any
sont of revenue stream for the artists themselves. I certainly don't think
music should be made with money in mind, but it sure would be nice to buy a

The only gripe I have with this new techology is how it may deter some
people from their duty of actually making a record.
Producing and having a vinyl copy of one's music, released, is like the
initiation process for a fraternity. To me, the mark of a real and
serious musician is to produce a vinyl copy of one's music. This mp3
internet stuff doesn't count in relation to this reponsiblity, IMHO.
You sure as hell can't hang a mp3 file on the wall.

 My spare penny,

Hey Jeff,

I think you are referring to Mute Records founder Daniel Miller. I believe
it is Daniel Miller and a partner whose name escapes me, at the DEMF they
were playing a set that consisted of deconstructed songs from the Mute
catalogue. I have an .mpg interview with Liz Copeland on a cdr around here
somewhere, I will dig it in the next couple days.

all i have to say is who else has ventured out into the land of
experimantation like hawtin has on the closer to the edit CD?? i don't
know
of anyone, but there could be somebody. besides, he is doing what he
wants,
and i am sure he wouldn't do it if it didn't make him happy. its like the
consumed album. he decided to put that album out instead of finishing
what
became the BC album. he put out what he was feeling, and you CAN NOT
knock
 him for that.

on a similar note, i have heard of a NovaMute(?) DJ who put sets together
using more than 2 turntables and it is entirely constructed of lockgrooves
and loops. it might not be the same as the Edit concept, but none the
less,
it is bold. and who thought lock grooves were the greatest thing in the

 didn't love them then...

 not expecting happy responses

Here's my first stab at it:

 Okay. [faint]
Well ... I'm driving in a black on black *in* black Porsche 924.
Tempting fate. (tempting fate for a little bit more)
My head is filled with techno beat, Metro Times, Face magazine.
Shadows out of time and space.
 ??? no place.

 TIME SPACE TRANSMAT
[more vocals obscured under the chorus]
( look at the way she stands???)
(there she stands)

Contemplating contemptuously, the inferior designs ... and the
outmoded, underpowered and otherwise obsolete lifeforms.

 TIME SPACE TRANSMAT
[more vocals obscured under the chorus]

How could she possibly walk in those shoes?

 TIME SPACE TRANSMAT

Excuse me, but isn't that black leather micro (mini) skirt a bit much?
I mean, it really is overkill, isn't it?
 She says, (nothing)
The lights of passing vehicles reflecting in (her mirrored sunglasses)
She looks at her watch, and I can see ...(the numbers _???_ of the
display)reflected?? dancing where
 her eyes should be.

 TIME TRANSMAT
 SPACE TRANSMAT

The Porsche, not unlike a snake, sliding under the side of glass aquarium.
She slams the door behind her. And she reaches over and turns the
 steering wheel all the way.
And she says nothing the whole time. She just sort of sneers at you.
And you see this: The distorted reflection of your face in her
 mirrored sunglasses.

[313] Lackluster Video

2001-08-07 Thread Michael Taylor
Hello,

Sorry for the mass mailing, but I wanted to share a video I found on the net
that is absolutely brilliant.

There is a 20 year old IDM producer from Finland name Esa Rouho. He put out
a brilliant series of records as Lackluster last year on an English label
called DeFocus. He is one of my favorite producers, and he is one of the
people to watch as far as IDM goes. Anyway, this is a great Ambient/IDM
track accompanied by an excellent music video. If you have broadband access
I highly recommend that you take the time to download this. It is about
56mb, but it is worth it.

http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=3291

I do not have any commercial or personal ties to this artist or the video. I
think it is very good work and I want other people to see it. If you are
into downtempo electronic music, you really can't beat this.

Take care,
Mike Taylor

Re: [313] Andrew Duke...?

2001-08-01 Thread Michael Taylor
Last I spoke with him he was making some changes in his personal and
musical life. Cognition lost its syndication awhile ago, which is why you
have not heard anything from that show lately. He is still doing a local
show and running a local college station, which is what is taking most of
his time these days.

He has also been concentrating on his own music again. I got a promo cdr
earlier in the year, he is doing dark ambient material. Lance McGannon
praised it when it was making the rounds earlier in the year. Andrew will
also have track on the next issue of Masstransfer.
http://www.masstransfer.net/

I think he and Lance both ran into the same situation. You work your ass off
at something because you love it, but you get very little financial reward.
Time passes, you get burnt out and you need to start making money...blah
blah blah... It is a shame for these lists because both of those guys
contributed so much information. I think the level of education on the lists
has gone down because of the fact that Lance and Andrew are not pointing out
articles or giving 30 release discography info and reviews, followed by 5
artists who you should check out if you are into a similar sound. There are
still people contributing, but it is not like it was.

Either way, Andrew deserves props because he worked his ass off to bring
this music to people who would not have heard it, and to better inform the
people who already had.

Take care,
mt

[313] (OT) FS four tickets for the Radiohead concert in Chicago next week.

2001-07-27 Thread Michael Taylor
Hey,

A friend of mine just gave me a call letting me know that his friends flaked
out and he is parting ways with 4 tickets for the radiohead concert in
Chicago next week. I am told that the show is next Wednesday, it is general
admission and the tickets are $45 dollars a piece. These seats are being
sold at cost. I am sorry for the non-313 content but I figure somebody on
the list is going to be very geeked to get these tickets.

These tickets will be sold to the first person who emails me for the entire
block, if nobody wants all four tickets I will sell them in two pairs.

Also, these tickets will only be sold to people in __Southeastern
Michigan__, and you must have the money and pick up the tickets by tonight
or tomorrow at the latest.

Thanks for the bandwidth,

Windy and Carl will also be on this bill. According to Windy this will
actually take place in the DFT. It will really be nice to see two acts
mellow acts in such a great venue.

I saw a Hans Roedelius playing piano last fall at the DIA, it was a lovely
concert. He was playing these hypnotic minimal piano pieces, very much in
the vein of early 80's Harold Budd. It was dry, but very beautiful music all
the same. I second Jayson's recommendation, if there is a quality act coming
through the DIA it is very much worth your effort to go see them.

What kind of material is Terry Riley touring these days?

2001-07-23 Thread Michael Taylor
Cex talks a lot of smack about overly serious sucker-ass idm and techno
laptop producers who think that using max-msp automatically makes their
boring music and live sets arty. Also, he calls out a lot of people that
make careers out of cliches and talk about the underground but have
international business agreements with multinational corporations.

anyway, he is freekin awesome, and like Slick Rick, he brings the lovin'
feeling back to hip hop. Anybody who stops in the middle of their set to
take the audience outside the venue to collectively figure out and sing all
the words to Jeremy by Pearl Jam is king in my book. His set in Detroit was
probably the most *fun* I have had at a gig in years.

Take care,
Mike

Cex was here in April, and rocked the joint, but the intervening
20 odd shows have really sharpened him up both as an MC and all around
entertainer. And his new beats are really, really tight. He played
some of his new stuff @ the record store today, and leaving the
hype and controversy aside (which, near as I can tell, is largely
confined to a few crabasses on IDM) he really is an excellent musician
  and producer.

Not only that, he really captivates a crowd. People dig him. He is
someone we'll be able to bring back to IC, and the word
of mouth will make each show bigger than the last. Haters need
to loosen up the tighty whities and have a little fun for once.

 What controversy ?

Re: [313] Moby

2001-07-21 Thread Michael Taylor
You know, I promised myself I would not get into this thead.

The really sad thing about area one or moby or whoever is that it will
represent this music in 20 years.

I was talking with some black dudes I worked with about a year ago about
music, and they absolutely refused to believe that disco was black music.
They just kept bringing up Saturday Night Fever and John Travolta. It is
going to be exactly the same thing in 20 years.

Afterall, Duran Duran and Flock of Seaguls represent the width and breath
of New Wave in the popular consciousness of America.

Take care,

in no way am i dissing this event in public. i am in full support of the

 event. did I?
 NO.

however, i find it IRONIC that this event is in canton, a white bred
middle
class suburb known for very little else but being a subdivision/industrial
park with a few major roads in it. did you grow up in canton? were you
ever
harassed by the canton cops for being a teenager?. ask ANYONE who grew up
in
canton and they would tell you the EXACT same thing.

furthermore, read the last paragraph. does it not say massive props? and
 seriously?.

perhaps re-reading things rather than making half assed knee jerk
accusations such as that last post would be a very wise idea. after all,
that's what a good journalist does, don't they?

 harsh? maybe.
 accurate? damn right.

 WHEN: 10PM July 20th
 WHERE: THE GREEN ROOM (509 S Gilbert (319) 354 4350)

CEX (Baltimore/Tigerbeat6) Skinny white boy Rjyan Kidwell is
single-handedly
putting fun and showmanship into electronic music. His combination of
crunchy laptop beats, singing, rhyming and antics makes him one of the
most entertaining live shows around these days. Part Kool Keith, part
 Andy Kaufman, and all CEX.

MARUMARI (CARPARK) Josh Marumari's SUPERMOGADON album is THE summer
electronic
CD to own -- sunny, warm tunes with great depth of detail. Marumari is
going to BLOW UP this year -- you can say you saw him in the funky little
Green Room when he's on the Grammys with Bjork.

STARS AS EYES (Tigerbeat6) A sort of Pink Floyd for the new milleneum?
Tigerbeat6's newest artist has been receiving rave reviews for their
 spacey live sets this summer.

So make yourself cool and come check it out. This is in a small club
with excellent sound, so if you're into Electronic music, this is the show
 of the summer...

Agreed. Aside from TG and the Normal, and the odd Gary Numan cut, what
else
 seems to have inspired Adult?

some other goodies to check out:

albums:

Movement by New Order
Tin Drum by Japan
Metamatics by John Foxx
Low and Scary Monsters by David Bowie(although this is more like art-damaged
synth funk)

Singles:
Vienna by Ultravox
Fade To Grey by Visage
The Chase by Georgio Moroder
Enola Gay by OMD
Whats The Use by Tuxedomoon
Decades by Joy Division

I really need to expand my collection in this area, I wish I could pull a
BMG name every seminal track recorder with a CR-78 between 1980-82. Anyway,
this should get you moving in the right direction.

 Hi everyone.

A small group of us have started a weekly thursday series devoted to
experimental music and film. This week we are proud to present Camille
2000,
Radley Metzger's 1969 Italian cult classic inspired by the Alexander Dumas
play of long ago. It's a story of romance, prostitution, gratutious sex,
obsession and indulgence all rolled into one. Should be a good time.

Anyways, the evening begins at 8pm with Maersk and myself delivering the
laid back musical goods, with the movie to follow at 10.30. Admission is
$4,
 with $1 popcorn.

Detroit Contemporary Art Gallery is at 5141 Rosa Parks in Detroit. Their
 info line is 313 898 4art.
If you have any questions/comments, please email me. Also, feel free to
pass
this on to anyone who might find this interesting.

 Thank you for your support.

played the only one that mattered. I'm lukewarm on his earlier stuff,
but Bill really shined tonight. Interesting sound design and percussion
programming really made his set stand out. I think Bill is really
reaching for something, he gave one of the most refreshing and
innovative sets I have heard in along time. It was not perfect and there
were rough patches along the way, but they were utterly forgivable
because when he was on, HE WAS ON! BVL is the kid to beat in my mind,
and he is going to be one of the truly relevant Detroit artists in the
next decade.

Dale and Walker were all right, they did exactly what you would expect
them to do. I give them respect, they both did it better than I could,
but at the same time it was uninspiring. They both absolutely nailed
the textbook definition of what is supposed to be good electronic dance
music at the end of the 90's, but perhaps that was the problem, how
relevant is that textbook anymore?

bottom line: Bill stole the show(even if the crowd was too dumb to
realize what they were hearing) It was raw, not always perfect, but
really fresh and it had a real creative fire and a hunger that was
lacking in the other more polished sets. Keep your eye on BVL because he
will be the one to watch in the next couple years. When he gets his s--t
together most of these cats aren't going to be able to touch him.

Take care,
Mike Taylor

Did anyone go to MOtor tonight to see Dale Lawerence and Stew Walker tonight?
How was the live PA's? I would like to hear a good review on what I missed
 on.
I am glad to see more live PA's rather than the ordinary stale d.j sets.

Tonight

2000-12-27 Thread Michael Taylor
Hello,

Sorry for the late notice, but I just found out that I will be playing
records at Forans tonight from 8-11pm. I am going to be playing a set of
moody IDM, Detroit Classics, and a bit of minimal dub for good measure.
It will be a low-key, unpretentious night of relaxing high quality
electronic music, definitely a good warm-up before Motor tonight

It will take place at Emerald Nights at Forans. Forans is located at 612
Woodward, which is two doors from the corner of Jefferson and Congress
in downtown Detroit. For more detailed directions call: (313)961-3043

Thanks,
Mike Taylor
