[313] Pump Up The Volume? - UK tv-special - what happened?

2002-04-23 Thread Peter T. Bense

Hey folks...

A few months back there was some discussion about this program which aired
on UK television... all about house/techno, electronic music roots, etc.

It was very informative and I was able to obtain a copy THE FIRST EPISODE
in mpeg format.

One of the list-members was supposedly mailing a copy of subsequent
segments on videocassette [in PAL format, I might add] to someone in the US
for encoding on some website or something... for encoding.

Well... it doesn't seem like it ever appeared online [afaik]... If it did,
great.. someone please e-mail me and put me in my place. =)

IF not, I'd really like to get ahold of a dub of the original -- I found a
place here where I am locally that will do the PAL -- NTSC conversion for
very cheap. I'd also be willing to provide copies to N. American [read:
NTSC] listmembers for a nominal fee.

So, can someone help me spread the love here?

probably a lot of others are worth talking to...

www.n2it.net

Hey, all...
I was wondering if anyone outhere has seen, played with, or has any
other info about the Finalscratch Program that John Richie are
currently using. I'm curious as to what special hardware is needed, and
how the switching of the turntables from audio to PC input works.. The
only info I can get about it is that it is a system that allows you to
cue manipulate mp3 files by way of a turntable playing a special
record (I'm assuming it must have some sort of pulse timing signal on
it?). I wonder when the average schmuck off the street (read: me) could
go purchase this system..

Giorgio Moroder Disco Circus?

2001-03-20 Thread Peter T. Bense

Hi... sorry for the somewhat off-topic content, but.. someone here might know.

I am trying to find some information about a Giorgio Moroder record called
Disco Circus that is like a nonstop megamix of Moroders phat
electro-disco tracks. I can't find any information about it on gemm,
allmusic or all the normal sources I go to research this sorta thing.

Anyone know the scoop?

Re: [313] RE: [EB] Giorgio Moroder Disco Circus?

2001-03-20 Thread Peter T. Bense
I got that too [on vinyl and CD] but this is not what I'm referring
to. This was a track I found on napster.

The file is called Disco Circus 1983 II - Giorgio Moroder Medley

Its really worth checking out... like an electro/disco mix. Its totally
ahead of its time [then again most of his stuff back then was... along with
the Telex dudes, Liasons Dangeruse, etc. etc.]

Your thoughts?

Anyone else heard this?

/peter

the second side of giorgio's 'from here to eternity'is kinda like a
mega mix of five tracks or so.

Re: [313] bongo drums

2001-03-20 Thread Peter T. Bense

Okay Okay you didn't ask for specific releases but I'mma tell you anyway

What about that double pack of Femi Kuti remixes that came out awhile
back? I'd probably part with my copy. ;) Remixes by joe claussel and
kerri c... and MAW.

... you always have the option of buying breaks records -- one notable one
that comes to mind is Apache Rock on the 303 label... its definitely bongo
heavy.

/pt

I'm looking to incorporate some heavy instrumental bongo driven funk
tracks
in with a mix and wondered if anyone knew of any tracks worth checking
out.

Not so much a specific release as a whole label: Ibadan Recordings out
of New York. All the usual NY house suspects like Joe Claussell, Kerri
Chandler and Jerome Sydenham are involved, most tracks are quite strong
on the percussive side, all are top quality (I usually don't even bother
to listen and just snap 'm up on sight).

The Mr. Bongo label (affiliated with the London record store of the same
name) released a compilation called Batacuda por favor a few years ago
that is well worth checking out. They've probably released more comps,
but I don't have any of those. Soul Jazz Records have also released
several great compilations full of percussive latin/afro rhythms.

Big Fun in OLD NAVY??

2001-03-14 Thread Peter T. Bense
Not totally off topic... but I was in old navy today picking up some pocket
tees... and I heard none other than Saunderson's Big Fun. Totally weird.

Actually, weird as it sounds, I kind of like the music they have in that
store. Also heard When Doves Cry by Prince and a few other pretty cool
tracks. I think they actually make Old Navy compilations of some sort --
there must be some clever individual behind all that.

Enough rambling.

Help me find this track!

2001-03-05 Thread Peter T. Bense
Its been a long time since I've posted to good 'ol 313... but I am trying

I'm looking for R-Tyme's track Use Me (Carl Craig Piano Mix) -- It came
out on KMS records originally.

Any leads?

Yeah guys, I know its been awhile since I posted but school's kept me real

Saw this one on the new-release lists and was wondering if anyone out there
has had a chance to check it out yet.

It says 23 tracks according to the Bent Crayon list and I was wondering if
anyone know if it was mixed/unmixed or had opinions on the music?

Thanks

Help w/Kelli Hand...

2000-04-26 Thread Peter T. Bense

Odd request here.

Mr. Duke? TP Alan... and anyone else who might have had personal
contact with Kelli Hand... I need some input on her.

I've found very limited information on the web. Nothing even seems to
indicate how old she is -- there isn't a good biography of her anywhere,
either. I have no clue what her musical background is or who it was [aside
from a mention of Jeff Mills helping her start her label] who assisted her
in establishing Acacia. There are some interviews in techno.de from
Frontpage but alas, they are in German -- Babelfish can only do me so much
good, you know?

I am interested in any opinions, perspectives... thoughts on her production
technique... how she is perceived. I need this information for a paper I
am writing for my women's studies class.

So... if anyone has $0.02 to share... or who might be able to help me out
with a biography or something about Ms. Hand, I'd appreciate it muchly.

(313) recommendations...

2000-03-14 Thread Peter T. Bense
Hey guys ... just wanted to share my extreme pleasure with a few things I
received this past week...

Jesper Dahlbäck - Sand Vatten (on SVEK)

Dahlbäck aka The Persuader just seems UNSTOPPABLE! This is a 4 track 12
that incorporates more of the live instrumentation production techniques
that we heard on STOCKHOLM. Two tracks... Sand Vatten ... Dub versions
of each are also on the records. The music is supreme... the dub ones are
somewhat dancefloor friendly and have really interesting syncopation. File
under deep house

10/10.

G-Man [the album on i220]

I don't have time to say too much about this one other than that it really
sits well with me... two slabs of nice syncopation and really fresh
percussion sounds [I guess that makes this an album]. File under
tech-house/techno

9/10

Scuba - Where the Wild Things Are

Quite frankly I picked up this release for one track that I cannot seem to
get enough of Heaven being the one in question. It is INCREDIBLE. Heard
this one first on Derrick May's Mayday mix CD and have been trying to hunt
it down since. Smooth chords, warm vocal sample... combined with an
interlude of a woman talking about fantasies [in Spanish]... really really
really beautiful and uplifting yet dancefloor oriented.

10/10 for that track... the rest of the 12 I don't really like... overall
6.5/10.. but I'd recommend picking it up for just that cut.

UK Gold Soulless EP - PRIMEEVIL 018

3 tracks here... no real info was given on the promo sheet about who these
guys are but there are 2 really phat phat tracks on here. A1 is Agent
Wood and AA1 Confined are the ones to focus on. 130+ BPM tracks with a
really solid kick to them and heavy basslines combined with vocal snippets
that say things like oooh... yeah... makes you feel good [there's both a
male voice and a female voice, sort of alternating between the measures
sprinkled with this sample and it sounds really nice].

9/10

... thats all for this week!

(313) Octave One vs. Dj Rolando?

2000-03-12 Thread Peter T. Bense

No.. this isn't a new release or anything... so don't get all excited.

However, I was laying in bed with my fat koss headphones on listening to
the Collective [the Octave One collected works CD that came out a while
back] and I was noticing how similar a lot of the production seems to be of
that of Rolando... even the same kind of sounds. I even wonder if they
maybe aren't using some of the same gear.

So the question is... does anyone else hear that similarity or is it just
my imagination?

... AND... does anyone know how tight the UR folks are with Octave One?

[Please -- I hope I'm not sticking my foot in my mouth here ... I'd kick
myself in the ass if I found out that one of the brothers was (unbeknownst
to me) -- in UR. heh]

hard banging techno. One of those Swedish guys in the Cari Lekebush school.

broadcast. We will take a retrospective look at the roots of techno and
hopefully have a special guest appearance [gotta listen to find out
who!] If you're geographically impaired, you can check out the show by
