Re: (313) Return to a free DEMF on July 4th?

2013-11-20 Thread Alex Lugo
While having two festivals will be great locally, it will be interesting to see
how this pans out demographically with foreign visitors. There has been a
slight resurgence of folks from abroad coming back to Movement.

With two festivals to pick from most people from outside of the area will pick
one or the other and the majority will not be able to do both. Regardless of
what Ms. Marvin tries to diplomatically brush over with the there should be 10
techno festivals a year line, this is a direct competition with Movement, and
not admitting admitting that is interesting.

I guess the lineups will be key.

Real Detroit has another article with some great quotes too.

$300 is for the conference element at Ford Field.  The free fest will
be surrounding Campus Martius Park with 5 stages.

I've heard the hullaballoo about Carol for years, and then had the
pleasure to work with her at Campus Martius for many years there

her quirks, and I know a lot of people who've had
troubles with her, I myself have had a few worrisome moments, but
she's overall a solid person, and seeing that she's gonna do this,
well, it makes me

to have put some serious time into the planning of this thing.  We'll
see how it pans out, but I think the interview she did with Real
Detroit is pretty solid, and she's right... Detroit has room for 10
Techno festivals a year, with this new DEMF festival / FEMT
conference, we'll be half way there...

Another question none of the articles have answered at this point is what the
free area in Campus Martius will have musically vs. the $300 for Ford Field.

This seems to be using the same paradigm as Ultra/WMC used for a bit, albeit
not with two large outdoor venues.

Also curious as to where all of this money materialized from. Time will tell.
Rachel Skotarczyk (Real Detroit) seems to be truly infatuated with Ms. Marvin.

There is a lot of talk in the article of unity, but honestly, not seeing how
that can be true regarding these two festivals.

I'm calling this a hiatus. In Mimai I was out and about too much to do
anything; enjoying the sun for a while. I move up to North Carolina 2 years ago
and haven't had the space (small condo downtown with sensitive neighbors). I
once got a noise complaint whilst watching Law and Order. :)

Once I get situated in the correct environs, we shall see. I'm moving to Puerto
Rico soon, so hopefully that will provide the happy medium.

Reply below that I sent to Ivan:

Hi Ivan,

Don't know what my old partner is up to, but we haven't spoken in years at this
point. The last jaunt to Europe was a bit taxing and strained our relationship
to the point of failure. Plus I had already moved from Detroit to Miami, so
that didn't help.

He may be working on things, but I have no idea. Glad you enjoyed the music,
much appreciated!

I do miss putting on a mask (or duct tape) from time to time. :)

Hah, so he's putting something together using Ableton Live, Max For
Live AND Plogue Bidule.  And he wants to control the video along with
the audio.

Nothing could ever go wrong with that -- outdoors, at night with
possible weather complications, right?

Was I the only one who got the e-mail from Minus saying Hey video
artists -- send us your work to use in our live show! For free! ?

I'm all for cutting edge technology and trying new things, but I'd
have to say that very little that Richie does moves me.  He puts
together these complicated Inspector Gadget setups and then ...
unleashes hours of boring techno too mnml for vowels.

Give me a good DJ with a record box and a mixer with no effects any day.

I assume Alex is referring to the craptastic talent that started to be
booked at Motor after Gina G (was that her name?) left (maybe for the venue
Science?).  Kimball Collins became a resident - ugh.  Paul Jokenfold was
booked.  Shortly, before Motor closed I caught Bassment Jaxx there - not a bad
show, except for some of the patrons being a Kiss FM type crowd.

I have never been to The Works, but isn't the venue once known as One X off
Michigan Ave?  Maybe not, I have been gone a while.  Either way The Works has
had their fair shair of good talent booked there.

One X had Beatdown Sundays for a while, if I am remembering correctly and they
are the same venue.

Haven't got much time to contribute at the moment due to early arrival
of my first baby girl (Laurel Brunton, 1 week old) but had to point
  out this story!!

When does the conductor answer to the semiconductor? When a robot is
  leading the symphony.

Last night a 4ft-tall automaton with a baton called Asimo conducted
the Detroit Symphony Orchestra in a performance of Mitch Leigh's The
Impossible Dream from the Man from La Mancha.

Asimo (Advanced Step in Innovative Mobility) greeted the audience with
the words hello, everyone, before waving to the orchestra.

Asimo is the latest robot designed by Honda, which has been developing
  walking robots since 1986.

It can run, walk on uneven slopes and respond to simple voice
commands. It can also recognise faces with its camera eyes. Honda
eventually intends its robots to be companions for the elderly or to
  assist schoolchildren at road crossings.

But Asimo's musical repertoire is limited. Unable to respond to the
musicians, last night's performance was a case of elaborate
baton-synching, mimicking the actions of a conductor who had been
  videotaped before.

During the first rehearsal, the orchestra lost its place when Asimo
began to slow the tempo, something a human conductor would have sensed
  and corrected.

It's not a communicative device. It simply is programmed to do a
sense of gestures, said Leonard Slatkin, the orchestra's musical
director. If the orchestra decides to go faster, there's nothing the
robot can do about it. Hopefully, I keep that under control.

Nevertheless, Asimo wowed the audience and even impressed some of the
musicians. The movements are still a little stiff, but very
humanlike, much more fluid than I thought, said bassist Larry
  Hutchinson.

  cheers

  Jason

Buy me a ticket and I'll be there this weekend. We can talk about our kids and

I've been wanting to visit Pittsburgh again, and haven't been in a while. Is

(313) Detroit Techno Militia Launches Record Label

2006-07-21 Thread Alex Lugo
Label signs 2-3 year deal in conjunction with
Cratesavers Muzik.

Detroit, MI. (July 15, 2006) - Detroit Techno Militia,
headquartered in Detroit, MI, has announced a working
production deal with Cratesavers Muzik, a record label
founded by the legendary Trackmasta Lou of SCAN7 and
Posatronix formerly of AUX88.

Detroit Techno Militia launched the label to display
the latent talent within the militia. With the likes
of their self-termed soldiers, the militia is
unstoppable said Mike Harmon, long time DTM supporter
and electronic music aficionado. Forming a record
label is the next step they needed to take after
building their solid reputation in Detroit and around
the world.

Detroit Techno Militia, a driving force in Detroits
techno music community, founded the record label as a
sub-label of Cratesavers Muzik. The partnership will
combine distribution, management and the experience of
the larger label with the clean proprietary design and
attitude that has come to distinguish DTM as a major
contemporary force in the battle against sub-par music
and performances. Their in your face style of
producing and DJing will surely raise eyebrows around
and throughout the techno music community. The take no
prisoners attitude towards their music helps the
militia to advance and spread the gospel of the music
that inspires them, and that will surely speak
volumes.

The much anticipated DTM-001 release is slated to
include tracks from Der Mercenary, Loner9 and Sougon
and will showcase the techno, electro and industrial
genres, says Angela Schwendemann, label manager and
founding member of the Detroit Techno Militia. Future
releases will contain material from all contributing
members of DTM and cover a broad musical spectrum.
Working with Cratesavers Muzik will afford me the
opportunity to learn more about the record industry
and what it takes to run a successful label, says
Schwendemann. The expertise and contribution of time
from Cratesavers Muzik will help make us more
successful, which will ultimately allow us to further
our mission.

We strongly believe this partner ship will continue
the solid Detroit tradition says Trackmasta Lou, CEO
of Cratesavers Muzik. The DTM crew will definitely be
a force to be reckoned with.

About Cratesavers Muzik

Cratesavers Muzik was founded by Trackmasta Lou (of
Scan 7 fame), and Posatronix aka B.J. (formerly of
AUX88). As two of the hardest working producers and
performers in Detroits electronic music battleground,
and with over 30 years of combined record-making
experience, the two joined forces to create and manage
what they believe a record label should be. The label
is dedicated to promoting and preserving the vinyl art
of DJing. The records produced by Cratesavers Muzik
are strictly for seasoned DJs who have accepted the
mission to overthrow the collective of weak track
dropping DJs. Refusing to pigeonhole their sound
selection; Cratesavers accepts demos of all electronic
genres. The minimal requirements are good music, and
the talent can play in live analog.

About Detroit Techno Militia

Detroit Techno Militia was established as a grass
roots DJ/Producer collective on a mission to promote
Detroit Electronic Music around the world. All members
are deeply inspired by Detroit's' techno history and
work closely with several of Detroits most influential
DJs and producers. Members include Andy Hegler, Annix,
Dan Lucas, Darkcube, Der Mercenary, Dimitri Pike, Doc,
Loner9, Mitch Walcott, Neil V., Sougon and T.Linder.

Re: (313) Detroit... how did it go?

2006-06-01 Thread Alex Lugo
Love him or hate him, I 100% agree with Tom's
statements. All of them. I was in shock when I entered
at the lack of people.

I don't care what the numbers say. I've been there
every year, as many as you have, and it was
significantly emptier than any other year.

Whatever the reason for this are inconsequential. The
fact is that it was emptier. His deductions as to why
this was aren't that farfetched.

Actually, contrary to what Complainas D. Coxigrump
 here has to say, word
over the weekend from the Paxahau camp was that
 the city has already agreed
to give them next year's contract (at least
 verbally).

what the city does with the contract is meaningless
 if paxahau lost
massive amounts of money. which, judging by the
 general lack of people
and expensive set ups (massive amounts of fencing
 and security people
enforcing it, bigger sound, etc), points to exactly
 that. its possible
that they budgeted for this many people (if they
 were really smart,
they did) but i just doubt it.

I agree that attendance seemed light, but reports
 in the local media
confirmed a higher attendance on Saturday than the
 previous year. I suppose
we'll have to wait for the final numbers to see
 whether there was less
  overall.

attendance more than seemed light. every year
 before this one i can
remember sitting near the main stage as the sun was
 going down
completely amazed by the never ending rivers of
 people coming down
into the bowl. this year, you could easily walk up
 the stairs with no
problem. other stages were similar, there had to
 have been under 500
people at the pyramid stage monday night, compared
 with any other
 festival thats completely ludicrous.

As for lower attendance at afterparties, you can't
 blame light attendance on
Paxahau, that's simply ridiculous. There are so
 many other factors to
  consider:

how is it ridiculous? they obviously shifted the
 demographic that the
festival had previously catered to. it resulted in a
 different crowd
who were out looking for different things that in
 previous years. and
that was demonstrated at nearly every single event
 that anyone i know
attended. obviously the 2000 people who attend their
 yearly after
parties make up the vast majority of people who were
 coming out for
that kind of music. i wouldnt be surprised to hear
 total attendance
being down as much as 25% or more. if they try to
 say otherwise, im
going to assume someone is lying. because the people
 just werent
there. why would someone travel from england or
 germany to hear photek
or planet of the drums? they wouldnt! so they didnt!
 simple!

  1) Saturday night had an overwhelming number of
 events compared to other
  nights, spreading the crowd thin.

what is overwhelming? i distinctly remember having
 far more to
choose from on just about any night over the past 3
 festivals than
saturday this year. maybe you mean overwhelmingly
 bad parties, which
 i agree, there were many.

  2) Many parties had much higher admission costs
 ($25+) and the lower cost
events seemed to be fewer and far between this
year. Factor in having to pay
for the festival this year, I'm sure many had to
 budget accordingly and
  sacrfice some nightlife.

people paid for the festival last year, and there
 were way more people
from my experience and the experience of everyone i
 talk to.

3)There have been several discussions on the list
 about the lack of new
blood coming into this scene, at least compared to
 previous decades. Less
new people means that serious festival attendees
 are probably the same ones
that have been coming for the past seven years,
 meaning they're all seven
years older. I don't know about you, but all day
at the festival plus a 4-6
hour afterparty just isn't as easy it used to be.
And that's just one day -
three days in a row is nearly impossible.

 wuss.

i dont see why it seems so ludicrous to say that
 this year's festival
proves that the real detroit music draws a better
 crowd. previous
years included lineups with far less big name
 talent, far less
promotion time, far less organization, pretty much
 any kind of
disadvantage you can think of. and they all had way
 more people
attending who were way more up for having a good
 time. i dont see how
anyone who attended this year could say otherwise,
 unless theyre
really into deluding themselves or their head is so
 far up paxahau's
various orifaces that they cant tell whats going on
 anymore.

i had a good time this year, but it was DESPITE the
 festival, not
BECAUSE of it. there were long periods of time this
 year where i had
to go hide from the music because everything on
 every stage was so
awful i couldnt stand to hear it. that never
 happened to me before.
and judging by how lightly attended the festival was
 especially during
 the early sets,

True, but to attribute the emptyness at DEMF to a
 lack of foreign travel is
a bit wrong me thinks. IIRC the demographics have
 never attributed more than

10% to foreign travellers in past years (unless you
 count the Canadians, who

 obviously don't count ;).

Sad to hear it was so empty though!

Re: (313) busted parties

2003-05-30 Thread alex lugo
When I was leaving the KMS afterparty there were cops rolling in deep
into that, so I assumed that it was going to get busted, but after
talking to Pete G. and Mark F., who were inside, it was not.

The funniest bit was some guy standing in line outside who made the
mistake of asking one of the cops standing outside it the party was
going to be shut down. Reply: What??!??, you WANT me to shut it down?
To which he says no, then: Then SHUT UP!! I guess she wasn't having
a good day policing the wonderful streets of Detroit.

I can definitely understand beign a little rude when dealing with
drunken idiots, as I'm sure they had to at some point that night, but
the guy that this was aimed at was lucid. Lucid enough to not want to
pay 25 bucks to go to a party that could get shut down 5 minutes later.

As far as permits go, I don't know how many places actually bother to
get them. One of the loopholes of doing afterparties at galleries was
the fact that they can hold events for any time periods. As long as
the event could be shown to be an artistic event, it could go on
forever.

I don't know how true that was this year.

My highlight this year was listening to Dan Bell's set at the
Underground Stage, as well as Buzz in the MI tent.

Another highlight was the freestyle programming doen by Ayro at the
beginning of his set on the Movement Stage, followed by the impromptu
dancing by the ladies and gent clad in brown overtones. Nice!

Another big + was seeing my NYC peeps (Pete G. and Mark F.), Ms. Potts
(you reminded me of Brad Pitt in True Romance chilling in the crib
24/7), as well the French connection (you know who you are), and of
course those international techno vagabonds (Technotourists, Inc.).
Shout out complete...

As for all of the drama that ensues from a gathering such as this, I
must say what's more important than all of this BS is to hang with
people you know, meet people you don't, and just enjoy the company
(for the most part) of people that enjoy techno to some degree or
another.

Peace,
Alex

Late on the thread.. email problems... anyhue,

How many parties that get busted, now-a-days, get busted
due to venues serving after 2am? How many due to improper
permits or somesuch? Do parties get busted for illegal
venues anymore, or is the days of break-in-and-rave over?
What other reasons do the police have to harass a party?

Seems to me that if a large percentage of parties are
getting busted due to serving alcohol after 2am, an obvious
solution is to choose to have our parties in more
  responsible venues.

ps. Oddly, I've never been at a party that has been busted.
Therefore, logically, another obvious solution is to only
attend parties that I go to.

(313) Sanctioned addendum

2003-05-15 Thread alex lugo
Just for the record, we are not putting on an afterparty this year
(and if we were, I would not be wanting to be sanctioned by any group
or individuals, etc). I was just curious as to what this meant
exactly, as in if a group of individuals wanted to get their party
sanctioned by the movement hierarchy, what they would have to do.

Or, is this just giving you head of the line privileges, while still
having to pay, at DM, CC, etc. afterparties.

Here's my first stab at it:

Okay. [faint]
Well ... I'm driving in a black on black *in* black Porsche 924.
Tempting fate.
My head is filled with techno beat, Metro Times, Face magazine.
Shadows out of time and space.
??? no place.

TIME SPACE TRANSMAT

Contemplating contemptuously, the inferior designs ... and the
outmoded, underpowered and otherwise obsolete lifeforms.

TIME SPACE TRANSMAT
[more vocals obscured under the chorus]

How could she possibly walk in those shoes?

TIME SPACE TRANSMAT

Excuse me, but isn't that black leather micro length(?) skirt a bit much?
I mean, it really is overkill, isn't it?
She says, ???
The lights of passing vehicles reflecting in the mirrors and glass.
She looks at her watch, and I can see ... ??reflected?? dancing where
her eyes should be.

TIME TRANSMAT
SPACE TRANSMAT

The Porsche, not unlike a snake, sliding under the side of glass aquarium.
She slams the door behind her. And she reaches over and turns the
steering wheel all the way.
And she says nothing the whole time. She just sort of sneers at you.
And you see this: The distorted reflection of your face in her
mirrored sunglasses.

My favourite bit was always it really is overkill, isn't it?...

um, mincing words means to quibble about precise definitions when the
general meaning of the discussion is clear. you're the one who's mincing
words.

i think you meant to say, don't misuse words, but whether you call it
racism, ethnic discrimination, anti-semitism or anything else, the fact
remains that all sorts of americans who don't look like johnny whitebread
are being harassed, discriminated against and in some cases killed because
xenophobic americans, looking to alleviate their feelings of powerless, are
lashing out against anyone they think even looks like they could be a
terrorist.

my south asian boyfriend's a grad student in liberal bastion ann arbor of
all places, and he's been getting pointed at in the residence halls,
hassled
by teen-agers at dairy queen and generally made to feel like he shouldn't
be
showing his face. this is happening all over the country, and harassment is
the least of it.

you seem to feel very superior that you know the difference between a
race, an ethnic group, etc., but what's your point? does it do a sikh
man who's being gunned down at a gas station in arizona any good to argue
that not only are arabs caucasians, but that sikhs aren't arabs at all but
are south asians? i don't think so.

Let's just clarify one thing here buddy... anti-Muslim or anti-Arab
sentiment, as wrong as it is, CAN NOT be equated with Racism. Why, you ask?
Because Arabs do not represent a distinct Racial group. Technically they
are
Caucasian, but ETHNICALLY they are Semitic peoples... the same as Jews! In
fact, Jews and Arabs are genetic cousins; there has been scientific
research
done to this effect. I'm really getting sick of people calling it Racism.
What we're talking about is anti-Arab or anti-semitic behavior, not Racism.

Don't mince words!

Islamic man living here who has received a number of death threats. I
also know that there are a lot of Palestinians living in North America
who are scared to walk the streets for fear of racist backlash.

The analogy I always like to draw for people is if Timothy McVeigh had
bombed a building in Iraq, would you feel it was right for the people of
Iraq to blame the entire United States for it and want to retaliate
against us? Would you, as a fellow American, feel any connection at all
to his actions? I'm sure this is how the majority of Palestinian people
feel at the point. For the media to show that footage and imply that it
represents the feelings of all Palestinians is atrocious.

This move is in support of his appearence on the

handed out as promotional devices to encourage people
to chose meat over fish.

thanks,

I heard that Carol fired the Lake Bass and instead got a dozen crappies to
replace it. The crappies decided to combine the Budweiser Downtown Hoedown

Anyone confirm?

This statement is incorrect and is the second time I have seen it used in
your stories. Instruments are used (not necessarily bands). Turntables are
used by DJ's to PLAY the music. The instruments that are used to PRODUCE
electronics are synthesizers, drum machines, samplers, and sequencers.
Computers are also prevalent in the production of electronic music.

While many pioneers of the car industry -- traditionally made by race car
drivers instead of engineers and designers -- are from Detroit, most of
them had to go to Europe to become major stars. See my point...?

Looks like quite a few of us were in Limelight last night! Look for
Pennington on Monday at Guernica in Alphabet City. The techno scene in NYC
has gotten strange in the last 3-4 weeks. Not too many people coming
out...hmmm.

You really don't need a car in NYC to get arouns as long as you stay in
Manhattan and the Bronx. Check on getting a shuttle downtown when you get
to Detroit. I'm flying to Detroit on the 18th as well. If your flights are
close to mine I can drop you off. If you can, come by on Monday so we can
meet.

P.S. The Tresor-party in Limelight yesterday rocekd. Maybe a little too
few
people, but good sound and good performances (e.g. Tobias Schmidt and
James
Pennington) Lots of freaky people though.

I second that. Pennington played a lot of harder minimal stuff once he got
going and a lot of it actually had chord changes. That really surprised me.
Good stuff though. Schmidt's PA was quite nice too. DJ Pete played a lot
harder than I thought he would, but it was tasty too. There were probably
5-10 records between Pennington and Pete's sets that I really, really would
like to have.

[313] Cabs FYI

2001-05-10 Thread Alex . Lugo
For the out of towners:

Taxis are not as prevalent in Detroit as they are in most major cities (New
York, Chicago, etc.). Leave the downtown area in a cab, don't expect to
find one for the return trip. Even downtown you'll have a problem finding
one sometimes. As Jason says, if you're in a group and are planning on
hitting a lot of different places, a weekend car rental is the way to
go

[313] Eyes Only: Detroit

2001-05-07 Thread Alex . Lugo
Hi All,

It has come to my attention that there has been a lot of misinformation
about this event. Here are a few facts:

1. This even will take place on the main floor of the 2030 building. There
will be 2 rooms. The main room will feature Dopplereffekt, Ultradyne, Adam
X, and Heather Heart. Adam and Heather may also do some tag teaming. The
smaller room will feature Tangible, Shadowpusher, DJ Luna, and Johanna
Constantine.

2. NO MATTER WHAT YOU HAVE HEARD, THIS EVENT IS NOT TAKING PLACE IN
ANYONE'S APARTMENT. PERIOD. While the building itself does have tenants on
the upper floors, they are all being notified of the event and permission
has been secured with the OWNERS of the building. The main floor 2 very
large spaces connected by a hallway.

3. THE OWNERS HAVE ALLOWED US TO USE THE BUILDING. I FEEL THIS IS WORTH
MENTIONING AGAIN. They are actually being paid for the use of the building.
Imagine that!

4. If you have any questions about this event, you should contact me
directly, or use the address below. Do not count on anyone else to provide
accurate info regarding this event. They are talking out of their a**. You
know who you are. If you do not have all the facts about something, you
should just shut the f*** up and say you don't know. There, I said it.

5. THE PRICE OF ADMISSION HAS BEEN REDUCED TO 20 DOLLARS. Advance
ticketholders will receive head of line privileges. I will have a list with
your names.

6. Everyone entering must have ID (18+). This will be an alcohol and drug
free event. This is not a rave. We are trying to promote a mature
atmosphere along with some good music.

7. Doors will open at 10PM. We will be beginning at @1045PM. Time slots for
the various artists will be posted at a later date.

Peace,
Alex

I kind of care when I hear that people that would like to attend don't want
to because they are hearing from a certain individual that this in being
held in someone's apartment and that the owners are unaware of this event
so it's going to get shut down. That is a matter of concern to me.

I hated Bush Sr., and the guy was an evil, meniacal, lying piece of shit.
But
I gotta say, at least he had SOME kind of intelligence. Bush Jr. is so
insanely STUPID, it's mindblowing! That's the REALLY scary thing about
this guy! It's like he never truely got past fruit loops and Capt.
Kangaroo!

And his finger (that was just up his nose) is on the fuckin' BUTTON! He's
talking to the Chinese like they're a bunch of lightweight idiots. God,
that
is
so fuckin' stupid and un-diplomatic! I personally think that they, and
their

potential allies, could stand pretty strong against the US if the shit
really
hit the fan. How come Clinton didn't have any significant problems with
them for eight years? And he's so ugly, man! I heard some supermodel
on Politically Correct during the campaign being like, weell, Bush really
has the charm and good looks that Gore doesn't have. What!!??!!!

I'm no big patriot, believe me. But the guy was a fuckin' draft dodger,
pussy
piece of shit, and he's got the nerve to act like Mr. Gung Ho military man.
Fuckin' hypocrite.

Oh, and not to mention he stole the national election The media so
conveniently glossed over the hugely controversial election issue, just
weeks after all that shit went down. Anyone else notice that?

Bush is trying to hard to be like daddy.

Re: [313] 70's rhetoric!!!

2001-05-03 Thread Alex . Lugo

Excellent discourse, Tristan! I find it rather annoying that certain
individuals that constantly bi*** about corporations have never actually
had to experience a corporate job. Yeah, I know, you can always go work
somewhere else. Sometimes that's just not possible. And no, not all
corporations are alike. I've for several different companies: EDS,
Chrysler, and now my present position. My new job is corporate, but I tell
you what, I'd stay here forever. It's a great place!

The point is that there is good and bad in everything. I'd like to stay at
home all day, make music, and do nothing (a la the movie Office Space). It
is very easy to say corporations suck but they are unfortunately, a
necessary evil. An evil telecommunications corporation is allowing me to
read all of your messages and send my own. I think that's swell!

Pick your fights. Speak softly and carry a big stick. That's what will get
everyone's attention. Constant ranting and raving about corporations will
not change a damn thing.

Peace All,
Alex

Being in the employ of one of the largest corporations in
the world, I can say that I've seen a lot of bullshit. I
had to work 60-80 hour weeks for almost a year when I first
got a salaried position. I recently watched 5000 layoffs go
down. It sucks. I've also seen things get better for me
over time. That's how it works *sometimes* in the corporate
world.

However, I can't entirely hate my job or my employer.
They've given me the opportunity to grow within the company
and learn a lot of new skills. Additionally, I think you
really need to have long-term first-hand experience of the
corporate world if you want to know what makes this country
tick. Big money runs America. When you watch the gears
turning internally, you see exactly how it goes down in the
U.S. government.

I'm able to stomach my work here because I've been very
lucky to land a consumer advocacy position within the
company. I probably would've left by now if my job duties
didn't specifically entail that I'm looking out for the
little guy. Even though there are horror stories like
John's, you need to keep in mind that big corporations
don't act as one any more than any other large group.
There are good efforts and bad efforts, good bosses and bad
bosses, and generally the head doesn't know what the tail
is doing. My entire job is to try and keep things in check.
If that doesn't explain how messy the corporate world is,
then I don't know what does.

I guess my point is that hating corporations is as
meaningless as hating goverment. The object of your disdain
is simply to broad. I'm probably in agreement with most of
you that are speaking up, but I think that broad statements
like corprorate America sucks are nothing more than a
rallying cry. Let's recall that some of the worst moments
in human history have been initiated through meaningless
rhetoric.

Re: [313] 70's rhetoric!!!

2001-05-03 Thread Alex . Lugo

I'm hearing you, Laura. I really am. I just don't think that people should
generalize. I remember Detroit back in the late '70's...everyone with a
brand new Big 3 car in their driveway...even at 6 mile and lodge..then
crack...and all of the shutdowns. Hell, my block in high school had not 1,
but 3 crack houses (that I knew of) on it. No one in my family, thankfully,
ever worked for the auto industry (I know, a bit strange for Detroit) but
plenty of families in our neighborhood did. That new car every year turned
into the same car for the last 6 years.

Sure, corporations have no love for the common man and his dream. You have
to keep yourself valuable to maintain in that structure. Thankfully, in our
current information age I don't think we'll ever have to worry about the
shouting voices clamoring to be heard. What I do have a sense of is that
corporations have been dirty since there have been corporations and that
changing their business practices through protests have generally not
helped.

I hear my grandfather speaking all of his relatives having to work in coal
mines because there was no other work. At least we have a choice thanks to
those brave, unfortunate souls. The media helps corporations by shuffling
things under the carpet. When's the last time you've seen or heard anything
about Firestone?

The Lord helps those who helps themselves...

Peace and Respect,
Alex Lugo

they REQUIRE watchdogs both for ecological, political, sociological as

as a myriad of other reasons.

Power to ya that you've found a good one. Amercia is and more than likely
always remain a Davey vs. Goliath /lil' guy vs. big entity kind of country.
You simply cannot tell me you have not one issue associated with corporate
mistrust/anti-trust/mega-machinations

Pick your issue and holler loudly, goddamnit!!! Hoperfully others with a
like mind will add inspiration and energy to whatever cause you may choose.
If there is a cause you may champion, however, more than likely there is a
corporation on the opposing side of the table.

Please let's not be so dismissive. In this city, ATM, having JUST
recovered
from rampant unemployment (double digit) for well over 20 yearsthe
feeling is thisif Bush f**ks with our flow.brothas will be

It is just that simple...people gotta eat and pay the rent. When they
cannot, civil unrest will not be repressed. I'm rather tire of the apathy
that has abounded while (for the last 20 years) we've all been scramblin'
to
make a dolar outta $.50

Detroiters--for the first time in a very long time have recently had a

of being gainfully employed and LIKE IT OR NOT are seriously on edge since
the economy flip-flopped back in Nov.

People unsubscribing from this list when they get 100+
emails/day mostly about CD burning software is also
natural. This is not a production list, and there are many
other lists better suited to that topic with a membership
that's more likely to answer your questions, or you can
just read the FAQs. A lot of people on this list don't care
about gear. They only care about music. It's best that we
not alienate them and keep the discussion focused on the
topic at hand when better forums exist for gear questions.

Personally, I find a few messages about something I may or may not care
about (gear, in this case) to be far less alienating than people telling
me what I am and am not allowed to talk about in a public forum.

I don't see how the absence of an admin actively envorcing rules makes
everyone think it's their job to be list-vigilantes, enforcing the
(intentionally vague, i'd assume) faq as they interpret it. Note that the
self policing mentioned in the faq PROBABLY means police
yourself. This is, of course, my interpretation. But i find it pretty
hard to believe that anyone could interpret self police to mean police
others. Also, please refer to the line that says building a gate around
a community is never the answer.

What if i said track IDs shouldn't be allowed, because a large percentage
of the subscribers aren't djs, and don't care for that kind of thing? Am
I any more right than you?

Not only are abstract discussions of what's on-topic the most off-topic
thing I can think of, they discourage the open dialogue that makes a
mailing list good.

Re: [313] tech-no at DEMF?

2001-04-19 Thread Alex . Lugo

That info is actually true. It seems they were willing to let the person in
question sponsor a stage, but would not let him have control over who would
be appearing on the stage. Circles within circles.

Just to throw this out there, did anyone else know that for no more than
the
price of air fare the DEMF was offered Joel Mull, Cari Lekebausch, Mistress
Barbara, Christian Smith, Marco Corola, and a handful of others, and they
said they had absolutely no interest? I could be wrong about this next
part,
but I believe there was some offer of sponsoring a stage as part of the
package as well. So much for total diversity as a bunch of seriously pro
level techno gets dissed! -

Just spreadin info. Don't hate me! (or maybe, you can hate me now!)

Re: [313] Live shows...

2001-04-18 Thread Alex . Lugo

From a performance standpoint, I think you'll be seeing a lot more laptops
at live shows (Ectomorph used one in NYC a few weeks back) and I don't see
a problem with it. You can much more power in one laptop than lugging a
whole bunch of analog gear around. We just did a show in NYC last weekend
and flew in on Northwest from Detroit. It looks like my friend's Juno 106
became the victim of the gorilla in one of the Samsonite
commercials.the pitch wheel was completely destroyed, and several
sliders were broken completely off. I'd rather carry on my laptop and have
the promoter lease anything you may need.

My last post reminded me of something...

I've seen a few live performances in the last few years, the most
impressive of which was Ectomorph's at Solar (The Blind Pig) a couple of
years ago. I've noticed, these days, that more than a few cats are bringing
out laptops and 2 or 3 pieces of gear and running their music from it.
People have told me that seeing Plastikman live was a billy bad assed show,
but I've never seen it. I saw Richie run his DE909 show on New Years Eve
1999/2000 and though it was cool but still expected something better.

What I'm really looking to get is some feedback: Do you prefer the
Ectomorph/Plastikman type of live show or the Laptop/sampler/keyboard type
of thing and why?

Drexciya?!?

2001-04-04 Thread Alex . Lugo
Hi Brendan,

I told you that Drexciya would not be playing our show when I saw in New
York a couple of weeks ago(do you remember that conversation, the same when
you asked if you could play?). Why did you print this? I don't know who
you have been talking to they are truly mistaken. As they say, you should
confirm your choices. Then again, you shouldn't have to when you get it
from the horse's mouth.
