Re: (313) Warp Offshoot
Warp Offshoot the new louis digital - 'Insurgency Soul' on arcola is flicking my switch atm, the a side is very funky techno and b2 is rather special, but I only got it last night and haven't had time to listen more than once so can't come up with a better description than that atm. I recommend it. I read that louis has done other stuff on footwork that is meant to be good too - I've not come across that label before, if anyone has any recommendation to explore on that label please let me know :) matt :) . (313) pete tong
after the blinding Send night last friday, I caught 15 mins of pete tong at turnmills and thought that after all the discussion about him playing techno tunes, ppl might be interested in what he was playing. when I came in he was playing one of the star tracks tunes by technasia, not sure that I knew the names of any of the other tunes, but I was actually quite impressed - the tunes were all soild loop based techno tunes very similar to the kind you might hear at a richie hawtin, dave clarke or trevor rockliffe night. When I danced past the dj booth I saw him and someone else in there, barely moving at all, and his mixing was very safe and without risks and his eq'ing was of the 4 bars with no bass, then press the kill switch again type, very uninspiring, but so far as I could tell the crowd was loving it, all the podium dancer wannabes and posturing ben sherman blokes seemed happy and everyone was dancing. so although I don't see pete tong as having any insight into techno at all, he was making the crowd, who most likely were waving their arms about to 10 minute long euphoric trance and hard house breakdowns last year, move to half decent techno tunes. doesn't compare to the send night tho! that rocked!! :) matt . (313) Jimmy Edgar in London next Friday (31 Oct)
No one has mentioned it so far, so thought I would. Detroit's Jimmy Edgar is playing a live set at the warp halloween party next friday. He plays techno oriented glitch-hop and IMHO his stuff is fantastic - prefuse 73 / machinedrum / funkstorong style. He played at the movement festival, dunno if anyone caught his set there? you can check sound clips of some of his stuff at http://www.m3rck.net/html/discog/009.html matt :) WARP::LIVE HALLOWEEN PARTY, LONDON. Re: (313) classic Italian records
on the subject of italo can anyone recommend some tracks with this kind of sound that are available to buy on vinyl currently. I remember at the second retroverts night earlier this year in london Jon Reynolds playing some amazing tunes with the italo sounds but a tighter, more modern production. I asked him what they were and he described them as sort of y2k italo re-edits :) I've got the Unclassics #2 vinyl with the margaritas track and love it, and it always gets a great reception when I play it to my mates, so now I'm looking for a few more nice titles to chuck into a mix for that house-party cheeky/happy vibe! :) cheers! matt . them, but are there any of these in particular that someone can recommend? I didn't have time to get through the huge bin of them and any tips on best of the lot are appreciated? my favourite of these records is Xenia / Wanda. there's a collection of some of them on the Rosa album CD ERNST014 01Doris 2 02Olga 1 03Xenia 1 04Xenia 2 05 Erika 2 06Anna 1 07Clara 1 08Inge 1 09Nicola 1 10Susi 1 11Ulla 1 12Yvette 1 oh and another favourite of mine is ester brinkmann - der ubersetzer - il traduttore (on suppose supp16-9) a cd where he uses samples that sound like the come from language comprehension tapes - very very interesting to listen to, though definitely one for going places with yr eyes closed lying on the couch than for club play. matt :) . I remember jon moore playing a hip hop version of the day the teddy bears had their picnic - what a mad tune, everyone with big smiles on their faces bouncing about to that one. (313) jeff mills at lost yesterday + free mix
last night's Lost was fantastic as ever... john kennedy played one of the best sets I[ve heard him do, including attend 2 :) just wish he'd played #1 I would have exploded. plaid did a nice set of messed up electronica, but it didn't really move the crowd apart from some amazing techno oriented electronic power funk - if anyone knows what those crazy tunes he was playing are please let me know! :) steve bicknell played a good set, but mills was the star of the night - another amazing set, including playing exerts from his new dvd showing him mixing, and jeff was mixing live into it and back out again so for a while we were watching the projection of mills mixing up close :) the crowd were fantatic - really up for it - lots of great dancing at the front. we took some pix, check http://hoc.finevinyl.co.uk/lost some happy faces in there + a couple of jeff mixing. when we got back we didn't sleep but carried on partying - I played some techno and the mix has come out really well, so please have a listen and give me some feedback - it features some classics and some new stuff, can do a tracklist if anyone wants it. the mix is at http://hoc.finevinyl.co.uk/mix-2003-08-26-post_lost_techno_mix.mp3 about 109 meg in size. the box its hosted on is only 4 mbit, so my appologies if it's a tad slow. matt :) . Re: (313) what is your listening space?
i've been thinking about this and for me it's the classic walkman and old copied tape combination because you can take music with you to amazing places, when you get that corresspondence between what you are listening to and the space that you're in which takes the two and creates some powerful feeling in your soul. i was spending a week in a village on an island in a lake in siberia while studying in russia and had a c90 - one side of satie piano pieces and the other with early finnish idm - absolutely amazing combination :) tho this thought made me think of another time when the space that I was in seemed to change because of the music - seeing DJ Rush for the first time at the Scala - I'd never heard anything like it before and for a moment in the middle of it all the sounds seemed to echo around and there was a klanging sort of noise just like on a building site and I suddenly realised that techno is everywhere in the city with the klanging of people and life making this random techno noise - the complete opposite of the total calm back on that island. anyway maybe I've been reading too much proust, but there's definitley an interesting power to be found within music and spaces. . Is that the one with man with the red face and a scan7 tune [or was that vol 2 ? ] that's def on volume 2, I think he was using doubles for man with the red face, or maybe I'm thinking of a Jeff Mills mix I heard. regardless, absolutely fantastic compilation - one of my favourites for long drives. P.F.M did a track called crusing detroit which was on the storm from the east compilation released by Moving Shadow around 1996. Re: (313) Alexander Kowalski's (was RE: (313) thanks, y'all)
yeah, I can recommend both of Kowalski's albums - 'echoes' and 'progress', echos reminds me a lot of purposemaker style techno, progress has better productions, but IMHO the vocal tracks are very weak. however the collaboration album 'reasons' with Denis and Diego is even better one of my favourite albums of last year. oh, and the kowalski remix of agoria's 'la 11eme marche' is also fantastic. I was wondering what list members think of agoria - I've heard 'la 11eme marche' in a number of very different clubs - from a warehouse party to a nasty little club here in southampton, it sounded very cheesy in the bad club and very powerful in the warehouse so I had to grab the vinyl :) they did a v.nice mix cd 'circle room three turn' that has a lot of 313 related tracks including some transmat material IIRC - was really impressed by it. matt :) . (313) Chris Liebing
Anyone seen Chris Liebing spin? He's here on Friday @ Space34 and I was going to go check him out I was wondering if anyone had heard him before. I saw him at the End for an 'open for torture' night. I'd heard some good sets of his before so I was hopeful. However when I saw him it was the most soul destroyingly bland hard as nails techno with very little imagination. Technically able, but there was no real funk to it. I like a bit of hard techno but he completely turned me off. There again, people have told me since that that's what you get at an 'open for torture' night anyway so maybe he's better at a place with a less proscribed music policy. Matt --- [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: (313) That Friday Question
LOL! That reminds me of one fundamental difference IMHO in the clubbing experience when you go clubbing to techno - the crowd. How many crowds do you hear cheering when the snares / hi hats / next mix comes in? :) I've only experienced that at techno nights. Re: (313) Exploring Drum and Bass
of, dare I say it, soulful drum n bass. I've been thinking about this a lot myself lately. Back in 95 I read an interview with Alex Reece who said how much he was inspired by UR and their melodies. Last week I went back to some of my favourite d+b records from 94 -99. While mixing some of my favourite examples of what would later be given the kiss of death by the label 'inteligent'. If you listen to some of the early reece, pim, wax doctor, the d+b that was put out on RS (esp the model 500 remixes), hidden agenda, creative source stuff etc there are IMHO a lot of at least superficial similarities to the detroit sound - the momentum of the beats, the use of strings, new sounds, eq levels in the production, use of dissonance, the funk in the spaces between the beats. Mixing them to maximise the beat and bass switches and absolutely minimise breakdowns I find it quite close in feeling and emotion to the feeling and emotion of dancing to a long deep soulful techno mix - with a big smile on my face :) It was these tunes that started making me want to find out more about this detroit sound I was hearing about. The mix I refer to isn't 100% perfect, but if anyone is interested I can host it for others to hear what I'm talking about. Maybe it's just nostalgia (already!) :)) -- has anyone else experienced or thought about something similar along these themes? Matt - [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: (313) [313] mixtape of a different media.
what PC software do you use for this? (wavelab, soundforge, cool edit?) Personally I like cooledit pro2 as I like the keyboard shortcuts and 'save selection as...' feature. I record a lot of mixes direct to HD and I've found that setting the temp folder of the recording software to a mapped network drive on a different machine dramatically increases speed and responsiveness for recording, saving and any post production. This can be especially beneficial with the large files produced by recording mixes at a high quality. If you don't have a home network then having the OS swap file on a different drive to the one you are recording to can also help. Cheers matt - [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: (313) Hip Hop and Techno (was 8-Mile)
also finkstroung r somewhere between hip hop and techno ooh, while were talking of fusions of hip hop and electronic music, may I recommend the new machine drum album urban biology and the new morris nightingale vs. kristuit salu album my mines i. Both on the miami label merck ( http://www.m3rck.net/ ). Machine drum is playing live at the warp x-mas pool party at aquarium on 20/12 in london too. Smallfish have stocks of the new album I think. IMHO much more soulful than prefuse and funkstorung. also the new prefuse 73 / mos def 12 is rather good. . [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: (313) downloading mixes *0T*
How do I set it so that when I click on a link (the Cim live pa link for example) it gives me an option to download or open? Right now, when I click on an mp3 If you are using a Microsoft product like OE and IE, right click on the link and choose Save target as..., a box will open up so that you can choose where to save the file to, so then you can navigate to yr preferred folder and save the mix/mp3 whatever in there. matt . Re: (313) miles davis
also, the Siesta sound track is done by Miles. even though the movie itself is hard to follow the sountrack is very experimental in the Miles way. Another film with Miles on the soundtrack worth checking is Ascenseur pour l'échafaud ( http://us.imdb.com/Title?0051378 ), I saw in this documentary on bbc2 a few years ago that he and his band sat in a cinema watching the film and improvised the whole way through, this was recorded and used as the sound track. .
