(313) Lost Landscapes of Detroit 2010 -- video

This is an hour's compilation of film footage in both black and white
and color, some silent, some with sound, all shot in Detroit.

Someone should def. use it for a music video.

It's online!! Such a great film. Got to see it in Detroit a few weeks
ago at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit - completely packed
audience filled with people who knew Detroit and shouted out places
they recognized in the film.

Slight factual error - Hutter is not present on that recording. He actually
left the band for a short while in 1971 and returned to record Kraftwerk 2 with
Schneider alone. Dinger, Rother and Conny Plank would then record Neu!

This is indeed true, I believe Hutter freaked out before the recording and
left the band because of the musical direction.

(313) Lost present Space Base - Alexander Robotnick

2006-03-02 Thread Tristan Watkins
Given the recent discussion I thought I'd pass this along. I'm not certain
how this relates to the weekly Friday events that were supposed to start on
the 10th of March, but I can only assume this is the first of them, but it
got moved to Saturday the 11th for whatever reason.

That said, I'll be at The Ruck for Outlet, Nick Wilson and Matt O'Brien.

Anyway, here's the scoop (which I think is a rather adventurous booking for
Lost these days, and bodes well for the guests over the next few weeks).

LOST present SPACEBASE

SATURDAY 11th MARCH 2006
@ Plastic People 147 Curtain Rd EC2
10pm - 3.30am

Tickets £10

STEVE BICKNELL introduces electro dance pioneer ALEXANDER ROBOTNICK
+ friends

Alexander Robotnick’s Problemes D’Amour has gone from 80s cult worship to
Italo Disco heaven and back and is now rightly hailed as one of the key
tracks to spark electronic dance music into what we have today. Now twenty
years later the track sounds as fresh as the day it was made. Acidic
basslines, simple yet catchy synth lines and funky, pre-house rhythms all
add up to Maurizio Dami’s Robotnick blueprint.

While Robotnick has gone on to make many albums from electronic
to world and pop he is still highly revered as one of the key instigators
of the 80s dancefloor revival.

At Spacebase you will experience alternative sets from Steve and his guests
featuring a multi-dimensional set from Robotnick that fuses laptop, midi
keyboard and microphone plus selective material from back in the day in an
intimate surrounding!

Thanks for all your support.

I hear the same stuff about record sales, that old fashionned music
sells less because its been the same for too long, and that young people
prefer to buy stuff fitting more to their tastes (lets say some regular
hard pounding techno).

For the last years ive heard the 25,30 and over people saying it used
to be better, young do not appreciate the good things... Err sounds
like my parents.

I think such parties (ive never been to Lost, but i guess what u mean)
should probably try to get some smaller venues to stay successful in
terms of crowd, atmosphere and music, rather than changing their musical
style which obviously does not fit with anybody (promoters , attenders)
linked to this event.

Dont misundertand me, i like it old school. I just prefer it succesful
in a small club (like that one at Moog with Jeff Mills at Sonar) rather
than big and boring (example that story saying Richie Hawtin was so
boring in 5000 people arena full of people expecting DJs like Adam Beyer).

Right on T. I say for all it's faults (most of them fairly recent) it
really ought to be recognized that Lost has played a major role in
keeping a segment of 'Detroit' music alive - at least by flying a

gigs (at I believe sensibly competitive fees). Don't forget Atkins,
 and of course May.

The problem Lost must confront now of course, is that many of us
punters and the generation of DJs we grew up with, are getting on. We
won't be able prop Lost up forever (sooner or later most of us succumb
to the wife/kids syndrome - I said syndrome! ;-). Or at least,
corporate/career life starts to make more and more demands on our
time, or some other type of responsibility does. Nor will the same
thing which kept us up all night necessarily keep doing that for a
crowd which might visit the institution in 5 years time, let alone ten

to be better, young do not appreciate the good things... Err sounds
like my parents.

Odeluga, Ken a écrit :
Well, it must have something to do with his long-lasting relationship
with Lost. I mean he's been playing there for over a decade, and even did
things like that first Space Bass @ Bridge Tunnel for £5 entry, so it must
(at least partially) be due to the strength of the relationship. How many
Detroit promoters have been throwing parties that would book Jeff Mills
(consistently) over the last ten years? The same is almost as true of Rob
Hood (who actually lives in Detroit rather than splitting time between
Chicago and Berlin), no? Correct me if I'm wrong, but Lost must be one of the
longest-running parties in the world (if not the longest at almost 14 years)
 that cater to Detroit techno.

Right on T. I say for all it's faults (most of them fairly recent) it
really ought to be recognized that Lost has played a major role in
keeping a segment of 'Detroit' music alive - at least by flying a
flag, but also by actually funding the producers of it with regular
gigs (at I believe sensibly competitive fees).

Nor will the same
thing which kept us up all night necessarily keep doing that for a
crowd which might visit the institution in 5 years time, let alone ten
years time. Obviously, fresh blood and new ideas are becoming
imperative. Till then, I can't say I won't be back there soon because
I know I will. And I'll enjoy it most likely.

Mills doesn't play anywhere in the US very often. I don't know the man
so I only have second-hand accounts of why this is, which nevertheless
are quite plausible.

#1 -- and probably the most important: In Europe, the sort of people
who hire him are experienced professionals, who set up events in a
competent and straightforward fashion. He has pleasant and mutually
beneficial relationships with those people. I'm sure there are
exceptions to this, but they only book him once.

Present company excepted of course, this is not the case in the United
States. By and large promoters in the US are either incompent yet
idealistic post-ravers trying to re-live the early 90s, or out and out
criminals.

#2 -- Mills' management very successfully insulate him from a lot of
the people who are interested in booking him in the US. If you see
Mills playing in the US you can be certain that it came about through
the efforts of people who he knows well enough that they can talk to
him directly, bypassing his management.

#3 -- Mills doesn't have to play here to earn a living. I don't know
the man, but I think when he's here in the US, he's tending to Axis
business and living well below the radar. It's probably a nice break
from the hero treatment he gets in Europe and Japan, which can no
doubt be exhausting.

#4 - As for Detroit, specifically, the last thing I heard about was
the State Theatre show that got canceled for lack of ticket sales.
That has to rankle.

there is at least once-a-year demand for him in detroit, and thats
extremely
conservative. if richie hawtin can pack any place in detroit a
couple times a
year, surely mills can. not to mention the tools like bad boy
bill and richard
(humpy) vision (or wtf it is) that play here regularly, and
probably pack clubs
with the kind of people that make you wish the venue would get
sucked into a

black hole.

The first Wizard show was scheduledfor St. Andrews in the Fall of 99. That was the one that got cancelled. The March 01 show went off at the State Theatre fro sho. He also played Movement once.I must agree that Mills in the park in Chicago a few weeks back was a great
time. He started with 'Good Life' and ended with James Brown's 'Super Bad.'
He spent his whole 2 hours going from house to funk to disco to rapto techno and back. Almost 'Wizard' like.It was SO much better than hearing him bang out a straight techno set IMHO. He was having a great time as well...until some jerkoff threw a bottle at him at the very end. Luckily, the bottle just missed.

This was actually the 3rd time he has played Chicago in the last year or so. From what I hear the DJs that play the park do so for free. Hopefully he will continue to come back after the bottleincident.
Cheers!

if mills came to detroit, it would be an EVENT.

there is at least once-a-year demand for him in detroit, and thats extremely
conservative. if richie hawtin can pack any place in detroit a couple times a
year, surely mills can. not to mention the tools like bad boy bill and richard
(humpy) vision (or wtf it is) that play here regularly, and probably pack clubs
with the kind of people that make you wish the venue would get sucked into a

Maybe he's just not keen on going back to his hometown - (I know this might be
a controversial statement) - it is often the case that once you've flown the

Well, it must have something to do with his long-lasting relationship with
Lost. I mean he's been playing there for over a decade, and even did things
like that first Space Bass @ Bridge Tunnel for £5 entry, so it must (at least
partially) be due to the strength of the relationship. How many Detroit
promoters have been throwing parties that would book Jeff Mills (consistently)
over the last ten years? The same is almost as true of Rob Hood (who actually
lives in Detroit rather than splitting time between Chicago and Berlin), no?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but Lost must be one of the longest-running parties in
the world (if not the longest at almost 14 years) that cater to Detroit techno.

2005-07-15 Thread Garrett McGrath
correct, that one was cancelled. supposedly due to poor pre-sales,
but who really knows. i think that wizard show did eventually
happen 4-6 months later...? memory there is hazy cuz i didn't have
the chance to consider going.

kent your other points are very well taken. if you've ever spoken to
frederick you know booking mills is like booking a major rock band;
AND he's generally very unpleasant. some kids who want to have a
party [dude] aren't going to get anywhere with him. i think there is
also some degree of jeff doesn't have faith in party/club goers in
this country and largely just wants to avoid the whole thing. i'm
sure that part would never be admitted to. but in the last decade in
north america pretty much the only place he has played is NYC, save a
handful of detroit things, the mini US tour he did last summer, and
richie's Sickness party in 1996. plus he has said on a number of

Mills doesn't play anywhere in the US very often. I don't know
the man
so I only have second-hand accounts of why this is, which
nevertheless

are quite plausible.

#1 -- and probably the most important: In Europe, the sort of people
who hire him are experienced professionals, who set up events in a
competent and straightforward fashion. He has pleasant and mutually
beneficial relationships with those people. I'm sure there are
exceptions to this, but they only book him once.

Present company excepted of course, this is not the case in the
United

States. By and large promoters in the US are either incompent yet
idealistic post-ravers trying to re-live the early 90s, or out
and out

criminals.

#2 -- Mills' management very successfully insulate him from a lot of
the people who are interested in booking him in the US. If you see
Mills playing in the US you can be certain that it came about
through

the efforts of people who he knows well enough that they can talk to
him directly, bypassing his management.

I will say, Jeff played in the park in Chicago, maybe three weeks ago and
seemed to have a GREAT time! The park was quite crowded, and everyone in the
dance area was getting down.

While the set he played was a little mainstream/clubby for my tastes, it had
some very good moments, the mixing was ON, and he was SMILING and seemed really
HAPPY to be there, which was unexpected for some of us. I hope this experience
might lead to a slightly improved view of US audiences? I think he definitely
got a lot of love at the show.

correct, that one was cancelled. supposedly due to poor pre-sales,
but who really knows. i think that wizard show did eventually
happen 4-6 months later...? memory there is hazy cuz i didn't have
 the chance to consider going.

kent your other points are very well taken. if you've ever spoken to
 frederick you know booking mills is like booking a major rock band;
AND he's generally very unpleasant. some kids who want to have a
party [dude] aren't going to get anywhere with him. i think there is
also some degree of jeff doesn't have faith in party/club goers in
this country and largely just wants to avoid the whole thing. i'm
sure that part would never be admitted to. but in the last decade in
north america pretty much the only place he has played is NYC, save a
handful of detroit things, the mini US tour he did last summer, and
richie's Sickness party in 1996. plus he has said on a number of
occasions that when he's in detroit/chicago, he just wants to
 relax... as you said.

but last few times I've been, I've spent most of the time in the second
room dancing to people like Stasis

Ha!

I ALWAYS used to end up in the back room. ALWAYS.
Gawd I had some good nights in there.

Mario/Lee Insync/Stasis/Kirk/Lewis Keogh/Alex Knight of course!

Them were the days, ahh.

I think maybe even Dj Rush once in the back room?

Backroom boy me.

(313) Lost or unreleased

2004-05-26 Thread Michael . Elliot-Knight

This brings to mind something I saw the other day while flipping through
some records

came across some record with a tune - don't recall which or by whom - that
said unreleased track or unreleased mix

I always found this strange because if it was unreleased, doesn't releasing
it negate the unreleased part of the title?

maybe I just have too much time on my hands ;)

And I was a little unsure whether these tracks were actually lost, is that

Alright, with such a nickname like mines, i think i could be point as one of
theses dumb head candy raver.
And to confirm your opinion, just take a look at my homepage.
Definitively, you will think : Once again, a stupid boy that pollute 'our'
culture, Come on kid, grow up!!.
And i would agree with you of a kind.
But, heres my point, nowadays everybody is dressed with common clothes in
parties, its so sinister. While back in the days, dress up what an important
party' component, its was part of the fun.
So i still put on colorful clothes, even though sometimes its like being a
parrot in the middle of a crow flock.
And its a way to recall how raves or whatsoever electronic music parties
have been, something full of joy!
And this way make a singular split with this generation of 'free parties'
ravers, all dress in khaki, shady as hell, listening to hardtekno,
sh..this kinda atmosphere doesnt give me motivation to party!
(whereas basically, i much appreciate the essence of this movement, i dunno
how strong it in your respective countries, but in France its really big).

So i will keep on beeing me!!
And enjoy the party the way i intend to!
Anyway, too much, is too much. Ive never own a glowstick, all thoses toys
can be fun in particular parties, but just once...after its really too much.
