Actually I think Derrick was saying that he gave away a box of his old
classics while in Australia as he didn't want to find himself playing them
again. He said he couldn't resist playing them as they sound so good, which
is true. He played a lot of new music - from Aril Brikha to Ian Pooley to DJ
Rolando. He played very different things, period. Like, for example, he had
Femi Kuti in there.

I know! I was being playful. Everybody knows Adelaide's got world class
talent and I have heard good things of Cycloid.

I just find it hard to imagine anything better than Derrick May but of
course that *is* highly subjective on my part!

I love the wide range of music, the soul and the energy and personality he
brings.

Did you know that DJ Noize started as a techno DJ before his rise as DMC
champ?
I learnt this yesterday from one of the bigggest hip-hop DJs here in
Melbourne. He's always kept
quiet about that!

Richie is great but doesn't have the expanse of Derrick. In fact they are
equally great, just different. Incomparable maybe.

See, I don't think Derrick has stayed the same. I have seen him many times
and it is never the same.

yeah, old tracks are good cause they have that nostalgic value and soulful
tracks are cool, cause you can feel where they are coming from, but give the
crowd something hard, like sterac or regis and they will move cause they cant
help it, the beats keep them captive on the dancefloorand what about
electro? KR10 B2 would get me dancing(or anything from the Interstellar
Fugitives pack, for that matter - note 313 content!)

as for the headphones, Im still waiting for my copy of the main st complitation
(no longer will I have to get up to flip sides), blackalicious NIA has been on
repeat, and anything that starts with 'au' and ends with 'techre'...

Ah yes. The "Feel the Funk" vs. the "Think the Funk" division. Expect this
to become more prevalent as we move into the "era of the new resurgence of
house."

Personally, I find myself lately clubbing for "oldies" and soulful tracks
while the architecture, minimalism and structure is reserved for the
headphones. (sorry ao)

yeah he rocked in brisbane, shame the sound system was so poor...only heard
the bass and hihats, all the midrange was muddy and subsequently it almost
ruined the set..however the highlight was derrick dropping UR "Amazon" and
then launching into James Brown and some fabulous Latin Jazz... nice

derrick,derrick,derrick...
was good.
but
for me, at least, the highlight of the night was
local live act - Cycloid...these guys were rocking
the show, definately succeeded in stealing some of
derrick's dancefloor action. from chopped up housey
rhythm traks to stompin techno tunes...
definately an act to look out for on undefined rec's.

That night at the Dome was amazing - those lovely soulful interludes of
(hate this word's New Age connoctations but can't think of a new one)
ambience. Derrick often varies tempos and he never really plays the same
twice, that's just him. I imagine he started harder at Seven as he was
compelled to after Chuck's mutant Ninja raver techno.

Hey, yes. It was just the one geezer with glowsticks though. I wouldn't want
Melbourne events like this getting a bad rep, y'all.

Derrick played great on NYE, everyone there was familiar with who he is and
what he does, the vibe was warm and friendly, it's just that the sound
wasn't all that. He had no control over the sound levels.

Reportedly the police insisted that the sound in the building be turned down
(which is a rare occurrence in Melbourne) and then there was some trouble
with bleeding between rooms.

>But he still didn't seem to be having the BEST time of it... alot
>of people seemed to be there for the spectacle, and not the music...

Yeah, he was a little frustrated about that I think, but those in the front
were definitely feeling it.

It was unfortunate that they had Chuck E opening as he comes from a very
different ethos - he plays bang, bang Euro techno. Everyone felt that
sucked.

They should have had the soulful, funky and upcoming great hope Declan Kelly
before - he was upstairs.

Had it been an Innovator party it would have been more harmonious but thems
the breaks.

Ian Pooley, Patrick Lindsey and Christian Smith turned up, as they were
still in town, no doubt taking lessons.

I really like Lindsey as a DJ - he's like a baby Dave Angel and can beatbox
into the bargain. I saw him the night before with Ian Pooley.

Peace

I just got home from there as well! He was heaps better this time than
when he played @ dome last year, he played a much harder and danceable
set I thought.

Also it was good in a small club where you could walk right up to the
decks and see what was going on.. though I think the constant
handshaking etc was starting to bug him as he was on the job - plus all
the people dancing around him waving glowsticks in his face etc... but
it was still good to see him in a smallish packed venue instead of far
away on a stage or up on a podium like the last 2 times I heard him.

Also Jeff Tyler played an excellent set afterwards, though I left part
way through it. Only minor downer for the night was SOME ARSEHOLE
STEALING MY FUCKING JACKET but I'll get over it.
