>From a performance standpoint, I think you'll be seeing a lot more laptops
at live shows (Ectomorph used one in NYC a few weeks back) and I don't see
a problem with it. You can much more power in one laptop than lugging a
whole bunch of analog gear around. We just did a show in NYC last weekend
and flew in on Northwest from Detroit. It looks like my friend's Juno 106
became the victim of the gorilla in one of the Samsonite
commercials.the pitch wheel was completely destroyed, and several
sliders were broken completely off. I'd rather carry on my laptop and have
the promoter lease anything you may need.

My last post reminded me of something...

I've seen a few live performances in the last few years, the most
impressive of which was Ectomorph's at Solar (The Blind Pig) a couple of
years ago. I've noticed, these days, that more than a few cats are bringing
out laptops and 2 or 3 pieces of gear and running their music from it.
People have told me that seeing Plastikman live was a billy bad assed show,
but I've never seen it. I saw Richie run his DE909 show on New Years Eve
1999/2000 and though it was cool but still expected something better.

What I'm really looking to get is some feedback: Do you prefer the
Ectomorph/Plastikman type of live show or the Laptop/sampler/keyboard type
of thing and why?

Maybe. However most producers are single entities. You rarely see large groups
(or groups at all) in our field of music. I gather this is because once that
happens, autonomy of production is lost and most producers like to have total
control over their work. If you had Earth-Wind-Fire sized electronic groups (7
members or maybe even more), then you could more than likely see these people
get out front and play one (maybe even two) instruments real time live. Its
humanly impossible to control 10-15 instruments with only one person playing
all of them live, so most people use Midi Sequencers to control playback of
the tracks because they dont have 10 brains, 20 arms, and 20 eyes to all
monitor, play, and time 10 or more different instruments at
once. Improvisation can still occur, that's for sure, but the experience you
seem to be after is one more based around other forms of music played live.

Oh, these 3 guys wouldn't be using all their instruments at once or
anything. The bass guy would have his bass rig, the rhythm guy would have
his rhythm rig, and the keys/synth guy would have his. They'd each be
filling a part of the spectrum. I think yeah, this sounds more like jazzy

2001-04-20 Thread george . jones
I just got a laptop yesterday (one of our older models here at work)
and I've been thinking of ways to make it more interesting to use in a
"live" show. I think what I'm going to end up doing is using the laptop as
the master clock for whatever gear I'm using and also to provide a touch of
sequencing and automated patch changes. Everything else will be on me. Drum
pattern changes/augmentation will be done on the fly, playing a bassline or
two will be done live (some of the time, I can let the pc take over after a
while so I can do other stuff), programming effects can be done live from a
control surface of some kind, ect., ect...

Maybe it's just me, but I feel like what I DO up there is just as
important as what come out of the speakers while I'm standing there.

i agree with the coment below...been thinking about this thing for quite
i while, what is "live" and what is "less" live?

i don?t mind people that use laptops, but as for me, i can?t see people
paying
X bucks to see me play live with a mouse and a computer. and belive me, the
thoght
has crossed my mind, while i?ve been breaking my back and my gear, carrying
them
around airports. it would be so nice to just have one piece of equipment
that you
could take with you on the plane. but the only thing is that i?m not sure
how people
would appriciate it and how fun i would have sitting infront of a laptop
and
clicking
away... i got an mpc because i was sick of looking into a monitor while
playing/producing
music.

dunno, feel like an rockmusician that would claim that playing techno live
or producing
it isn?t actually playing music...it?s so ignorant and i hate myself for
thinking that
way, and when reading rythm droids comments, it just reminds me that the
music is the
important thing to listen to but i can?t help thinking of the
"entertaining"
part of a live performance to. i would love to have people just carrying on
dancing during a live-set, but usually, everyone?s just end up
standing/moving infront of the stage as if it was a rock-concert.

bill van loo / demf 2000

recloose / motor
theorem / bob evans on woodward (7/01) or consumed (tie)
metro area / 7th city party 2001
common factor/ all access party
moodymann / all access party

and everyone who hasn't heard it, try and check out magda's mix cd. been

Yep. I'll second that one. I'd also add Kit Clayton on the Formless Form
tour, if that counts as 313. Stewart Walker in Iowa City '99. This was the
"Nothing Creates Stark Imagery" era. Scion w/Tikiman @ DEMF. Todd Sines @
DEMF 2. Does Titonton count, since he has a band (of sorts)? I was quite
impressed @ DEMF2.

Ya know... Boston has got to be the Live PAist capitol of the US at the
moment. Three of my favorites are there, in Stewart Walker, Fred Gianelli,
and Todd Gys. All current or former listmembers.

Has anyone seen Vladislav Delay? I don't recall ever hearing a review here.
His 2-hour mp3 once on the Native Instruments site was done live I believe,
and about 1/2 of it became Anima (in a way). Oh, and on the topic of live on
the net, there's a really nice Monolake and Kit Clayton as Revenge of the
Nerds on the monolake site, and the first half of Isolee live on the
Betalounge is really good too. Hell, we could almost just do a "best of" of
the Betalounge...

Sapporo Reserve is big and good... :)

Re: [313] Live shows

2001-08-31 Thread Mxyzptlk
Speaking of great live shows, I have to say I was quite impressed with
Herbert @ Motor last night.
It seemed like all of his musical personae coalesced and emerged though the
"lounge" style of Bodily Functions. Loved whatching him build tracks from
samples (jewel cases being smashed, bottles clanking/breaking, jaws
popping, vox, etc), tweaking them and then morphing them into sequence and
developing the BF songs. Phil is an amazing pianist - funky & jazzy...Dani
was sultry and fun and Matthew has an amazing sense of rhythm and timing
(great accordianist, too!). It was like Dr.Rockit built the intros,
Wishmountain/Radio Boy would pop up between verses and take the songs into
chaos and then Herbert would bring them back to melody and recognizable
form like ~that~...stopping/starting on the proverbial dime. Nice deep
kicks would emerge now and then and remind you what the man can do with
House. Afterwards the whole ensemble was accessible and affable. Matthew
seemed genuinely enthused to meet me- especially when I told him my name
and that I sent him samples which appear on Bodily Functions (I think I'm
in the track 4 credits). He knew my name and ushered me back to meet Dani,
told me he had "played" me in the set, asked if I could recognize it, etc.
Dani was very sweet...she said something which seemed quite complimentary
to me (couldn't make it out) repeatedly and then pulled me to her and
kissed me :-) (sweetly). Admittedly I was a bit surprised and dazed!
Anyway - great show. I think the live set comes off even better than Bodily
Functions as a record. Much more a hodgepodge of Matthew's styles and a
boatload of fun!

Yeah Todd's set was very cool and the visual accompaniment was a soothing
relief from the Bacardi logos.

Anyone know what software he uses for his visual editing? Also, if anyone
knows of other visual/video artists doing similar work I'd be interested in
knowing about them.

good lord, todd's set at polarity (columbus, ohio...july 21st this year if
i remember correctly) was AMAZINGLY good. i would venture to say better
than stewart walker's set even. :) really nice minimal but yet funky in
all the right places. if you ever get a chance to hear him play live
again, do so. i highly highly recommend it. clicky bleepy funk. :) yum.

as far as the videoediting programs are concerned, i have no clue...he is
on this list (i think) so i'm sure he will pop in to answer. :) and i bet
he might even give you a link to some of his tracks and a live set that
was recorded about a week before polarity. (i have the link at home and
not here otherwise i'd give it to ya...heheh).

good stuff. definitely.
lauryn.

i missed his set at polarity (sorry again, todd) but did you happen to
catch charles noel's set as _the archetype_? good stuff..i also
caught him and kevin ginger's after wedding party "union" in portland.
i highly reccomend. if you have a chance to come to columbus tonight,
rumor has it he's playing downtown at cafe brioso. i will be there for
sure.. drop me a line for more info.

michael

ps. dono if todd is still on the list, but i will ask

pps. both todd and charles have some awesome new materal coming out..
keep your eyes open for it!
