RE: (313) Jeff Mills @ Club Contemporary Classical, Berghain Berlin

2009-07-31 Thread Martijn de Blaauw
Club Contemporary Classical
Jeff Mills, Toca Loca, Kathleen Supové, VJ Safy Sniper
10-9-2009, Berghain, Berlin

CLUB CONTEMPORARY CLASSICAL (C3) is dedicated to innovative mergings between
classical music and club culture, presenting high-quality works which fit a
club interior both aesthetically and aurally. Throughout the history of Western
music, serious music has been paired by composers with popular material,
thereby pushing forward the development of the art form. This tradition
continues today through composers utilizing techniques and aesthetics common to
club culture and electronic music such as repetition, sampling or the
integration of visuals. As an important location for classical music and the
current world capital of the club scene, Berlin makes a highly suitable
location for what is perhaps the first festival to exclusively showcase only
music that blurs the boundaries between these two, usually very separate,
worlds. C3 aims to open the ears of club and classical music fans, widening the
audience-base for both, and to promote creative dialog between both scenes.
Connections between art forms is also a focal point of the festival location,
the Berghain, considered one of the world's top clubs (2007 and 2008 readers'
survey, International DJ Magazine). The artists featured in the C3 program were
selected to reflect the wide variety of approaches underway internationally and
are but a small representation of activity taking place in isolated pockets
worldwide. Their work is presented in short, live sets of approximately 45 to
60 minutes accompanied by visuals. On the final night, DJs take over where the
live performers leave off, building a purely electronic bridge from
contemporary classical stage to dance floor. Club Contemporary Classical is
made possible by the Capital Cultural Fund of Berlin (Hauptstadtkulturfonds)

I'll agree with that. Jeff's set was a very different animal from the
DJ who played right before him.

But as I said before, Jeff's set seemed to lack momentum. It was fun to
watch him work his magic and create such an intricately woven amalgam of
rhythm-and-sound, but overall it sounded like it had no impetus other
than its own intricacy. After a while, it felt like a moto perpetuo in
still life: Dude Descending a Staircase.

That isn't to say that it was bad set, because it wasn't by any means.
In its own way it was really exquisite. It just didn't leave as strong
an impression as the DJ set before his.

Yes, it was at Tangent gallery.

I got there before midnight and the youngish DJ I described below was

Around 1am or so, Juan came on. He played for maybe 30 minutes.

Then Jeff played until maybe 4am (I wasn't watching the time).

Then Juan played again until 6am.

2009-05-11 Thread Joel Gajewski

Eh, that does sound a bit familiar now.  Must have been all the turkey from
earlier in the day that made me forget.  I do remember being really tired.

Was Derrick's set not that good either?

I have heard some not so great on the fly 909 work by Mills and it can be hit
or miss.

My 2 cents...

The show was terrible and trainwrecks throught the evening. The space
is cool tho. And it must have just been an off night, because both
have been on point many times before.

Taboo for 313 or taboo in general?

I've met Frederic, briefly in Paris, and back when I tried to do such
things, had some exchanges via E-Mail with him about booking Jeff
Mills to play in Iowa City. Jeff Mills has not appeared in Iowa City,
so I can't say those exchanges were satisfactory from my point of
view, but I have no beef with him.

He is fiercely protective of and loyal to Jeff. He's been managing
Jeff's career for quite a while now, so obviously Jeff is happy with
their relationship. If you google around, you can come up with some
colorful stories about Frederic, but we don't need to go into that on
this list.

He's a good manager for an electronic musician I think.

He cuts bull**rs down in about 0.1 seconds, in my reckoning, from
personal observation.

On the other hand he seems to be straight up and not particularly eccentric or
rude if he's approached in a sincere way
[or what he perceives to be that.] I just say this from the very few times I've
happened to e-mail or speak with him on the phone. Not recently, I hasten to
add.

Yeah I saw this flyer at Submerge. I got the impression that his

You and me both! I couldn’t even find a t-shirt for less than $100 when I
was there. You could easily drop $1000 on a few shirts or a couple of
dresses.

The shop is pretty chic. It is all black with men’s clothes on the right and
woman’s clothes on the left. In the center there is a big table with
accessories. In the back there are some architecture books and CDs for sale.
When I was there Mills’ mix of Jaguar was playing. Every time I grabbed a
different shirt to look at the sales woman would say in her thick accent,
‘This shirt is from Brazil,’ or ‘This shirt is from Japan,’ or ‘This shirt
is from Italy.’

Mills and Yoko were there too. He was trying on a very shiny jacket. The
only other time I saw those two together in Chicago was at a Frankie
Knuckles show at the House of Blues a few years back. They were both in the
middle of the dance floor, getting down and drenched in sweat. I had to do a
double take because I couldn’t believe what I was seeing!

I hope Mills does well with the shop. But who can afford to buy those kinds
of clothes? I don’t know these people.

suppose that the fact that it's on an extremely limited Japanese Import doesn't
help!

It's a return to form I think after 2 or 3 years of middling work from him. Very lush,
abstract minimal techno in the same vein as Metropolis, which IMHO is still his best
album.

It is a bit frustrating however that a lot of people won't hear this record.
And given that Mr Mills isn't an artist I think that needs return on these CD
sales given his large DJ fees, it's a peculiar dichotomy because in today's
climate a shop selling this CD online will have their stock bought up by
collectors who then sell it on. I guess because it's on CD, it only exacerbates
p2p sharing.

To me, this album was one of the highs of 2006. The sounds actually
reminded me to space and space travel. From this album, Mills` love
for old science fiction movies becomes very clear. The theme, plus the
fact he really makes his machines sing, make this a top album.

me, I think in general, sometimes music of electronic origin
comes across
badly when played in a more 'traditional' sense. in ditching the
electronic
aspect, you tend to lose alot of what the track is about, as it
tends to be
more about actual sounds, and maybe just simple hooks. Most
electronic
musicians dont think about writing actual songs as such I dont think.
someone say like, kraftwerk were always more song based, so their
stuff
generally sounds good when covered because the songs are strong.
but I aint
too sure how jeff mills stuff would fair without all those dope crazy
sounds he uses. they seem to set the atmosphere.

actually i feel like jeff mills' stuff (at least the melodic
complex stuff he does) would sound better than most electronic
stuff. i dont wanna hear the bells by an orchestra, but maybe
like some of the metropolis stuff or the more experimental melodic
stuff would be pretty awesome.

2005-06-21 Thread Stoddard, Kamal
To bw honest, jeffs stuf isn't really too far off from hearing an orchestra go
into one of those totally staccatto songs where the sounds start to bounce and
stuff. I could se it, but then again it would probably just sound like an
orchestra covering mills. So? Only intellectually exciting due to the novelty
of the concept. I couldn't see myself reeling from the impact though. That
said, you'd be surprised to hear some of the sounds that classical musicians
can come up with given the freedom, and if they really let the musicians play
their intruments in non-standard ways to achieve some really techno sounds
(sliding a bow lengthwise down a cello, really fast)then we might have a
very techno moment my friends.
