Grace Jones is awesome, but she is only one act of many The crowd has changed at Sonar too, much in the same way that Movement's seems to have changed. Re: (313) who is going to the festival??? Re: (313) festival roll call? anybody making t-shirts?
Carole Marvin being white, actually, was neither here nor there. That's a whole long crazy story, which you've probably heard most of. It started out the first year she was content to have Carl be Artistic director, and she was content to leverage her experience with the Jazz Festival to help put something together on the Plaza. At some point, though, she kind of lost the plot, and fired Craig, I guess because she felt like the festival was 'hers.' Unfortunately she'd fired a massively popular figure locally and internationally, and came off looking pretty Lady Macbeth. She put on the festival in 2002 with a group of people who traditionally did not get along with the 'Detroit Inner Circle' so well, and ... well I'm sure you can read up on it. She still owns the trademark on DEMF as far as I know. I feel kind of sorry for her because she went from hero to villain in Detroit, and I don't know if she ever quite figured out why. You should try and talk to Alan Oldham some time. He lives in Chicago now. Whatever you hear in Detroit he's the contrarian. He's a great guy, but whatever someone else in Detroit tells you is white, he'll tell you it's black. Ok, I don't think I have EVER written this much to this list. Frank, I think that the data that you put together and your analysis of it all is really important. Yes, you put the words Paxahau and racist together, but I have also heard a lot from local DJs and producers in interviews I have been doing over the past year and five months here. Some are critical, some are not, some are on the fence. So right now, that's where I'm coming from. And...Carol Marvin is white :) But I read ya loud and clear! Alright now, goodnight! I am really really glad that the festival is still going on, and Paxahau is doing a great job. 2) The dramatic change in the percentage of black performers to white performers between 05 and 06 is a fact. I'd worry a lot more about that if I thought the stuff we prattle on about here had any real influence. And it seems to be a sort of "any press is good press" statement, which I don't really think is necessarily true. Reading about R*ch*e or M*by on 313 list wouldn't likely make anyone go out and buy their music. You want to make money -- not just greed at work, but also the 'pinball' part of the job -- if you win you get to keep playing. You want to work with people who are professional, and not a pain in the ass. Benny and Rich are successful professionals who are guaranteed draws. And whatever you might think about their music, or whether they should be headlining at DEMF, it's clear to me that they both were thrilled to be there. You might think they're soulless hacks, but they're not dumb and they know what Detroit means to dance music. In a sense, Moby and Benny need Detroit a hell of a lot more than Detroit needs them. > I think it's way more complicated than just "Paxahau is racist" or > they are just a bunch of guys from the suburbs who don't care about > Detroit. > While I might quibble with some of Paxahau's decisions artistically, I think it's grossly unfair to talk sh1t about their motivations. You do get a glimpse of Minx, briefly. Not that she doesn't deserve recognition, but in terms of the video as a whole she's the person featured least likely to be a draw for the Moby fans. Paxahau are trying to run this as a going concern, and when your concern is how many bracelets you sell, you are going to try and feature people who might have some appeal beyond the rabid techno fans, like the people on this mailing list. And in case you haven't noticed, as a cohort, 313 listers are aging out of the festival-going age group. What percentage of people under 25 even know what an E-Mail list is? We are not the people for whom Paxahau is working so hard to make a festival. We could have a perfect DEMF for the 313 list, but there's only 442 of us (I just counted), and even if we could count on the general awesomeness of any festival WE curated drawing 20 times that many people, it wouldn't begin to pay for itself. Plus even if the lineup was generated by the 313 list, there'd still be all sorts of hating going on about it. If you're going to the festival, look at the afterparties, too. Maybe it's just me but there are more opportunities to see really fantastic lineups for dirt cheap than ever before. And you can see Omar-S during the day at a rooftop party! pgh / technoir audio will be in the D yet again. I've yet to miss a festival, so I'm looking forward to this annual rite of passage. on the Music front: Just in time for the Stewart Walker event here in Pittsburgh last Friday, we got in the tests for TNA 009 from Arne Weinberg, and TNA 010 from Shawn Rudiman. I'll post full details, sound clips and all other pertinent information in near future. Not to start another flame war about vinyl vs. CD/mp3, but for my money there's nothing better then debuting a new slab of wax to a receptive crowd. I get chills each and every time. jw On Wed, May 6, 2009 at 11:50 AM, Lori Draper wrote: > I will also be attending, not that I am anyone special, but I got one > of Todd's shirts last year and hope to see some of'em around the > festival! I will certainly be there! And I will, at some point, be wearing Todd Sines lovely 313 shirt from last year. And lots of great afterparties already: DTM is having a free party on Saturday night I think - free! That's nice and refreshing amidst some of the more expensive dealies. And Bang Tech 12 is having a free afterparty on Friday night. Also, Blank artists party - which I am very excited about. Re: (313) who is going to the festival??? Re: (313) festival roll call? anybody making t-shirts?
I am not. It really hurts me to not go too. My reasons: combination of each/all of my core group of 5 friends who we had shared hotels/flights from every US region/etc are saying no. One is going to Spain (for some shwechno festival - lame), one is in law school, and the rest feel like they've seen enough for this year (whatever that means). For me it's like a pilgrimage, and maybe I will book a last minute flight just to see 6 hours of the festival, but I somewhat doubt it. Reason 2, I am doing a professional exam a week following the Festival. That's my story for now. Manchester is on it. The two sided (wrap) t-shirt has it on the front - right next to Sheffield and Grand Rapids (ha ha ha ha ha ha!) However, Minneapolis is not and we've got Prince. Yup. You're right. It looks a lot better without the x's. a lot better. Thanks. I like the fact that a lot of cool designs have surfaced and I'd like to say before this thread gets officially deaded, that I think this type of thing is great and should be continued (no matter the medium). It may look a little bitted out at first (the hosting company's compression). It's a rather large jpg. It looks a lot cleaner when you view it at full size, though your browser may make you scroll. Just click the image and it should resize for ya. Lemme know if this is what it is. RE: (313) 313 list T Shirts for DEMF? ideas
I was placing the list addy square across the front chest, which should put the other text block under your left tit/teat/pec. I like the font, and probably won't change anything much unless something really makes stupidly obvious sense to me. The real reason I did this one, was because I saw too much thought going into the rest. So consequentially, I won't think much further than I've gone with it (plus I like it). If you have a change, feel free to hook it up though *cough*$tinki*cough*. It'd be interesting to see what comes back. I still wanna see Todd's though. He's really gd. k -Original Message- From: Frank Glazer [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, February 28, 2008 1:03 PM To: Stoddard, Kamal Cc: Michael Kuszynski; darnistle; 313 Subject: Re: (313) 313 list T Shirts for DEMF? ideas best so far!!! except i am not fond of the 3d font and think the whole design needs to be condensed a little. and where are you placing it on the tshirt? across the front or in the upper left hand corner? nobody needs to be reading my gut. Okay, so someone said the more the merrier, so I'll post up a less technical looking (though a bit du jour I admit) option. Yea the 313 tower looking design isn't bad. it does seem to 'pixelate' or approximate the text, like old ascii warez nfo files. Not that that's bad. It just looks a little aliased or something. I realize I'm a tad late responding to this thread, but I really, really like Frank's design a lot! http://www.flickr.com/photos/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/2286376973/sizes/o/ I would actually buy a shirt if it had a design along these lines on it! I like the blocky aesthetic of it. I especially like that I had to look at if for a while to make out the "313" lettering. That said, Frank, I think the design could stand some tweaking because it appears, to me at least, that shapes spell out "AE", which I guess could make it double as an Autechre t-shirt (which is also fine with me). I think the shapes need to appear to spell something more Detroit-techno related, or the numbers themselves need to look a little more evocative of numbers. Like I said, if you make shirts with this or a comparable design and you keep the price reasonable, I'll buy one.

Is there another company that sells wholesale, quality black T Shirts that are US-made or fair-trade imported? I want to punish American Apparel for their president jacking off in front of a female reporter.
Re: (313) 313 list T Shirts for DEMF?
Well, I had heard some stories about him having loose relationships with some employees, but nothing like that! Thanks for that insight. The one shirt I do have - it was sent to me as a promo and it's comfortable. Never bought anything from them. Did go into the new shop they opened in my city this past weekend but honestly found it highly annoying, like their advertising (very bad 80s retro) after I left I was weighing whether ordering online would have less of an impact than if I had to drive/take bus to their shop anything to avoid going back there hipster yuppie shouldn't have anything to do with buying local and organic it's just trendy to do it at the moment which is a shame because that kind of action needs staying power like I said, I don't care who makes it I'll buy the shirt if it keeps in line with my sensibilities - AA doesn't so thanks for the info Tom so - in regard to a 313 t-shirt, prefer something not from AA please thank you MEK "Thomas D. You are confusing marketing hype with product line. American Apparel is a pretty OK company in my view. They treat their people right and that's saying something in the cut-throat and sweated labor world of the garment industry. Then again, not every company stars the founder's grandfather in a photo shoot. http://www.americanapparel.net/gallery/galleryCollections.html fh -- mail forwarded, original message follows -- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: (313) 313 list T Shirts for DEMF? RE: (313) 313 list T Shirts for DEMF?
I think the design is fine, although the GM reference raises a number of problematic associations concerning the company's relationship to Detroit (not to mention balance sheet, market share, offshoring, the lamea$$ comments by Bob Lutz about global warming, etc.). But hey, when you're talking about anything Detroit related, it's all about ambiguity and contradictions. So yeah, Martin's gotten us the postmodern 313 t-shirt design :) fh - GM exec stands by calling global warming a 'crock' Fri Feb 22, 2008 3:04pm EST (Editor's Note: This story contains language in paragraph 1 that may be offensive to some readers) DETROIT, Feb 22 (Reuters) - General Motors Corp (GM.N: Quote, Profile, Research) Vice Chairman Bob Lutz has defended remarks he made dismissing global warming as a "total crock of sh1t," saying his views had no bearing on GM's commitment to build environmentally friendly vehicles. Lutz, GM's outspoken product development chief, has been under fire from Internet bloggers since last month when he was quoted as making the remark to reporters in Texas. In a posting on his GM blog on Thursday, Lutz said those "spewing virtual vitriol" at him for minimizing the threat of climate change were "missing the big picture." "What they should be doing in earnest is forming opinions, not about me but about GM and what this company is doing that is ... hugely beneficial to the causes they so enthusiastically claim to support," he said in a posting titled, "Talk About a Crock." GM, the largest U.S. automaker by sales and market share, has been trying to change its image after taking years of heat for relying too much on sales of large sport-utility vehicles like the Hummer and not moving faster on fuel-saving hybrid technology. "My thoughts on what has or hasn't been the cause of climate change have nothing to do with the decisions I make to advance the cause of General Motors," he wrote. Lutz said GM was continuing development of the battery-powered, plug-in Chevy Volt and other alternatives to traditional internal combustion engines. GM is racing against Toyota Motor Corp (7203.T: Quote, Profile, Research)(TM.N: Quote, Profile, Research) to be first to market a plug-in hybrid car that can be recharged at a standard electric outlet. Lutz has previously said GM made a mistake by allowing Toyota to seize "the mantle of green respectability and technology leadership" with its market-leading Prius hybrid. A 40-year auto industry veteran who joined GM earlier in the decade with a mandate to shake up its vehicle line-up, Lutz is no stranger to controversy. As part of a campaign against higher fuel economy standards, Lutz wrote in a 2006 blog posting that forcing automakers to sell smaller cars would be "like trying to address the obesity problem in this country by forcing clothing manufacturers to sell smaller, tighter sizes." Automakers ended their opposition to higher fuel standards in 2007 when it became clear that proposed changes would become law with or without their support. In December, U.S. President George W. Bush signed a law mandating a 40 percent increase in fleetwide fuel economy by 2020, the first substantial change in three decades. (Reporting by Kevin Krolicki, editing by Toni Reinhold)
