Re: [313] more political crap from me (OT) - Bush

2001-05-05 Thread Cyclone Wehner
Bush was voted in by white males, he didn't get signifcant votes from women
or people of colour.
Traditionally most African-Americans vote Democrat. Also Bush got in by
disenfranchising Latin and African-American voters in Florida - I think this
was to be challenged by the NAACP but I haven't read anything more about
this. I often wonder how voting patterns would change if voting was
compulsory in the US as it is in Australia. Very OT post on my part.

this is not a matter of speculation either, it is a fact on public
record...you only need to care to look.

GM

Actually, it is not a weird conspiracy thing. The Bush family has stong
ties

with the American Intelligence Community, George Herbert Bush was Director
of the CIA in 1970, and had ties with the bay of pigs invasion through his
oil holdings. The republican presidential campaigns from 1980-92 were run
by

ex-CIA spooks. George Herbet was a member of the Skull and Bones society at
Yale...

If you really examine the American Intelligence Community's involvement
with

national politics since Truman allowed the OSS to become the CIA in 1945,
there have been some interesting shananigans. You can marginalize someones
interest in these issues as conspiracy mongering, but if you actually look
at it, some serious questions are raised. The CIA is a huge organization
with a massive budget, that is not accountable to anyone. They are doing
something with all that money...and it goes beyond echlon and carnivore.

Take care,
Mike

she is just trying to re-focus the list. as much as i think those links were
informative, they were also off topic. yes much of detroit's music IS
politically oriented, but what tracks can you name that are totally parallel
to the nature of the discussion? i can't name any.

of

all those nasty laws the provide minimum wages, workers rights, food
inspection, FDA medicine testing, environmental protections, consumer
safety

laws...

ya know, things were so much better for the average person in the 19th
century. Lets forget about how regulation has helped the average consumer
in

the 20th century. It isn't a big deal, I know we can rely on corporate
altruism. It worked so well in the 1800's.

I do not mean to sound like a whiney middle class anti-corporate college

make the US a better place to live.

I think their approach to personal freedom and social responsiblity is
good,

but a complete laissez faire approach to government is unrealistic as best,
and frankly dangerous at worst. All the things that dubya is doing right

Being Canadian, I feel somewhat removed or exhonerated from any duty to
fight back against the US government, but this voice of dissent on a techno
list can only echo so far. I'm totally with you in your fight but if you
really feel it, it's got to stretch further than 313. Everyone's in the
same boat so now's the time to start petitions, email your local
politicians, become part of Public Interest Research Groups, or take some
type of action.

The microsound community is employing their art for political purposes and
is planning a noise demonstration on the White House lawn (a la Black Flag/
Minor Threat - punk for those who aren't familiar). In fact, a number of
noise artists staged a similar "concert" two weeks ago in Quebec city during
the FTAA Summit of the Americas.

Like I say, being in Canada makes me an armchair activist of sorts in this
regard but it seems so unAmerican to see America so passive during this
entire electoral debacle...

RE: [313] more political crap from me (OT)

2001-05-04 Thread K Hawkins

First, let me apologize in advance for nudging 313 further off-topic--

--but: While the Libertarian position on individual rights is an admirable
one, the other side of the party's position is a flat lack of concern with
societal responsibility, or at least an apparently naive faith in human
decency and the all-solving power of free market capitalism.

Definitely, check out the libertarian party, but carefully consider whether
its emphasis on individual rights really needs to be tied to repealing
environmental and workplace regulations, dumping (rather than fixing) social
security in favor of binding your retirement funds to the caprices of the
stock market, abruptly ending all forms of public assistance, dumping the
idea of a public education. Economically, how is this an alternative to the
two major parties?

Frankly, part of the party's appeal is that it suggests that the more
comfortable members of our society should be left alone to do what they
want, without worrying about what happens to anyone else. I'm not suggesting
that this is Ani or Holly's motivation in an interest in the party--from
their previous posts, it certainly doesn't seem to be--or that libertarians
in general are selfish or unconcerned with the fate of others. But, if only
in the spirit of May Day, I felt obliged to note that the libertarian party
does have a right-wing economic bent.

On the 313 front: Picked up the new Mike Grant on Moods and Grooves. The
original and the Mr. G mix are great. Way to use a Maya Angelou sample.
And Rob Hood's "Apartment" is mighty nice, too.

more political crap...

2001-05-04 Thread lauryn goller
what bush has done so far that really makes me angry:

http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/nyt/20010427/ts/house_approves_bill_criminalizing_violence_to_fetus_1.html

http://dailynews.yahoo.com/fc/Science/Environment_and_Nature_News/

http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/ap/20010503/wl/un_brazil_aids_1.html

that's not including the story diane forwarded.

he's basically racked up a lot of policies that aren't very well thought out
(the fossil fuels energy plan...hello...we only have SO MUCH coal...just like
we only have so much oil...) or they are just right-wing policies in disguise
(like the violence to fetus bill and the rehash of the war on drugs)or they
just plain prove that bush is more concerned with money than human rights (with
the fight with brazil about aids drugs)...

pretty ambitious work (and pretty sneaky and underpublicized too i might add)
for only being in office going on 5 months...

blah.

Re: [313] more political crap from me (OT) - Bush

2001-05-04 Thread jkessler
I hated Bush Sr., and the guy was an evil, meniacal, lying piece of shit. But
I gotta say, at least he had SOME kind of intelligence. Bush Jr. is so
insanely STUPID, it's mindblowing! That's the REALLY scary thing about
this guy! It's like he never truely got past fruit loops and Capt. Kangaroo!
And his finger (that was just up his nose) is on the fuckin' BUTTON! He's
talking to the Chinese like they're a bunch of lightweight idiots. God, that is
so fuckin' stupid and un-diplomatic! I personally think that they, and their
potential allies, could stand pretty strong against the US if the shit really
hit the fan. How come Clinton didn't have any significant problems with
them for eight years? And he's so ugly, man! I heard some supermodel
on Politically Correct during the campaign being like, "weell, Bush really
has the charm and good looks that Gore doesn't have". What!!??!!!

I'm no big patriot, believe me. But the guy was a fuckin' draft dodger, pussy
piece of shit, and he's got the nerve to act like Mr. Gung Ho military man.
Fuckin' hypocrite.

Oh, and not to mention he stole the national election The media so
conveniently glossed over the hugely controversial election issue, just
weeks after all that shit went down. Anyone else notice that?

I laughed my ass of when I read that (in a black
comedy type of way). I wish Bush would realize the US

of that fact. Maybe in time he'll learn to work with

Re: [313] more political crap from me (OT)

2001-05-04 Thread diana potts
I think it's really important that people not
actually reject him, but stay informed of him and what
the people in charge are doing. I think Washington is
counting on certain portions of the younger audience
to not stay informed, read the news and be involved
due to who is in office b/c they don't relate. I don't
chase the news, but simply reading MSN or Yahoo
headlines (both postings I got from one or the other)
is important-no matter which political way you go.On
the brighter side, perhaps by stealthly watching Bush
we'll learn what it is exactly we want in office next
timeand apparently it can't come soon enough IMHO.

The white house is turning into a tree house.

encouraging OT.

The other day a friend of mine told me about some survey he read in
which 3 out of 5 African-Americans refused to even recognize George
Bush as their president. Now, I don't know the validity of these statistics,
but it would not at all surprise me.

I laughed my ass of when I read that (in a black
comedy type of way). I wish Bush would realize the US
isn't king of the world. This is just a signal to him
of that fact. Maybe in time he'll learn to work with
the rest of the world, instead of trying to tell
everyone what to do. But I doubt it. :)

p.s. much appreciative of the info
