I'm not taking any sides. but to be honest, after looking at these topics
over and over, I feel this has to be named as personal care list.

Initially, I felt this list is going well within an intellectual limit.

How to Brush?

Proper brushing takes at least two minutes, that's right, 120 seconds!
Most

adults do not come close to brushing that long. To properly brush your
teeth, use short, gentle strokes, paying extra attention to the gumline,
hard-to-reach back teeth and areas around fillings, crowns or other
restorations. Concentrate on thoroughly cleaning each section as follows:

Clean the outer surfaces of your upper teeth, then your lower teeth

Clean the inner surfaces of your upper teeth, then your lower teeth

Clean the chewing surfaces

For fresher breath, be sure to brush your tongue, too.

Tilt the brush at a 45° angle against the gumline and sweep or roll the
brush away from the gumline. Gently brush the outside, inside and chewing
surface of each tooth using short back-and-forth strokes. Gently brush
your

tongue to remove bacteria and freshen breath.

What Type of Toothbrush Should you Use?

Most dental professionals agree that a soft-bristled brush is best for
removing plaque and debris from your teeth. Small-headed brushes are also
preferable, since they can better reach all areas of the mouth, including
hard-to-reach back teeth.

After brushing, here is what I do:

Scrape my tongue with a tongue cleaner. Then garggle with a moutwash. The
mouthwash burns like hell, but it's better putting up with this pain
rather

than the pain of a tooth!

Hi all,

I am back with another question.

Many of you might think that I ask these questions just for fun, but

trust me, I ask them because this is the best place for me to get real

and honest answers.

And I firmly believe that every visually impaired person has had these

questions in his/her mind at some point, but most of us are too shy to

ask such things openly.

So, my question is this: How can I ensure that while applying

toothpaste on my brush, no squiggles of paste unintentionally get

dropped and make the whole place messy?

Also, how can I make sure that I've brushed my teeth properly and
correctly?

I have a strange and insane habit of brushing my teeth thrice to

ensure that nothing remains behind and everything gets covered.

This often leads to immense wastage of toothpaste and leaves behind

even more squiggles of paste.

So, please guide me in this matter.

You can mail me off-list if you don't wanna talk about this publicly.

Controversially yours,

Mohit

Re: [AI] Using escalators

2012-05-02 Thread zoher

Hi mohit follow these tips while using escalator.

1. Don't catch anybody's hand while riding on escalator.

2. Fold your stick before you use the escalator, because people may
hold your stick in order to help you, which may lead to accident.

3. Wear shoos or sandals in these types of place, footwear's like
slippers might put in trouble as they may slip from your foot.

4. Put your right foot first on escalator and follow the left foot.

5. After climbing in the escalator, put your both the legs on the same
step.

6. Put your upper part of your leg that is your finger part in the air
and balance your self on the ankle.

7. Take more care in case of coming from up to down because this is
more risky then going up.

Hope this will help you.

Hi Mohit,

As Pranav pointed out, it is easier to use an escalator if you hold on to
the railing on the right as you place your feet on the escalator. This
way,
if your feet are midway between two steps (it can happen, as the steps
come

up or go down when the escalator starts moving), then you can either step
down or step up without losing your balance. Ensure that you always hold
on

to the railing on the right side of the escalator, as the left side is for
people who wish to walk up or down the escalator.

Also, if you are a cane user, place your cane on the step ahead of you. As
the escalator moves up or down, you can feel the steps going up or down.
When the escalator nears its destination, it is easy to spot the final
step

if your cane is on the step ahead of you. You are then not suddenly thrown
off the escalator without you realising it.

Hope this helps.

Court relief for disabled aspiring chartered accountants

http://www.thaindian.com/newsportal/uncategorized/court-reli

Thaindian News
New Delhi, May 2 (IANS) The Delhi High Court Wednesday directed the
Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) to relax the
guidelines for disabled students appearing in exams conducted by it.

The division bench of Acting Chief Justice A.K. Sikri and Justice R.S.
Endlaw told the institute conducting the exam to allow a relative of
every disabled student to act as a writer for him or her.

It also made clear that the writers for disabled students should not
be related with the subjects like company secretary, commerce or
corporate law. They should also not have any association with cost and
works accountants courses.

The court’s order came on a petition seeking quashing the fresh
guidelines of the ICAI for the students with disabilities appearing
for the chartered accountant’s examination that commenced Wednesday.

According to recent guidelines issued by the institute, the writers -
who could write exams for disabled students - should be less than 20
years, no relative could act as a writer and there could only be one
writer throughout the exams spread over 15 days.

The judges directed the institute to allow the disabled students
appearing for exam to change the writer throughout the examination.

They asked the examination committee of ICAI to consider the issue and
make necessary amendments in the guidelines for the examinations in
future, while making it clear that Wednesday’s order was only for the
on-going tests.

Petitioner Pankaj Sinha told the court that it was impossible to meet
the guidelines as it was difficult to find writers below 20 years. He
said most people under 20 years were busy in their own exams.

On the guideline that there can be only one writer throughout the
exams that spread over 15 days, he submitted that it may not be
possible for some writers to be available for the candidates due to
sickness or personal urgency.

Another petitioner Subhash Chandra Vashishth said: “It is difficult to
fulfil the condition and to find writers below the age of 20 and the
examinees with disabilities are most likely to fall in the trap of
missing their examination despite their good preparation.”

[AI] The disabled as an economic resource

2012-05-02 Thread Amit Bhatt
The disabled as an economic resource
Ajay Kela

Posted: Monday, Apr 30, 2012 at 0324 hrs IST

India has a very unique talent pool of an estimated three million educated
disabled. What makes them so unique? The educated disabled have demonstrated
tremendous resilience and have been toughened by the challenges of inadequate
school facilities, lack of accommodating transport infrastructure and yet have
graduated from high schools and colleges. This segment of society reflects an
enormous 'can-do' attitude and is equipped with tremendous staying power which
corporate India can leverage.

Corporate India could derive better business value in terms of higher
productivity, reduced attrition and lowered training costs by employing this
talented pool within existing corporate jobs. Today, the average employment
rate of disabled people in the private sector is only 0.28%. The public sector
showed an employment rate of 0.54% even though the population of the disabled
in the country exceeds 6%.

The inherent reasons for the lack of sensitivity on behalf of the corporate
sector are a matter of concern. But, it hasn't helped that the government too
has fallen behind its plans. 'Scheme of Incentives to Employers in the Private
Sector for providing Employment to Persons with Disabilities (PwD)', which was
launched in 2008, was meant to create 1,00,000 jobs annually for the disabled.
It has barely created a few hundred. The ministry of social justice and
empowerment also seems unable to motivate the private sector through incentives
that encourage the employment of the disabled. The government has agreed to
reimburse the employers' contribution to the provident fund for disabled
employees earning up to R25,000 for the first three years. R1,800 crore was
sanctioned for this scheme under the 11th Five Year Plan. The revised estimate
for 2009-10 was R3 crore, of which only R1 crore was released.

The orthodox routes of disability management focused around welfare,
reservations, concessions, subsidies and other short-term practices have
clearly failed to deliver results. India has a large and unique population of
educated disabled with excellent leadership skills, staying capacity and
unparalleled productivity. Can the past be set aside and can corporate India
realise the business value of the three million educated disabled?

Large enterprises with foresight and taking a cue from western world, where the
disabled fare are already part of the mainstream, are working towards
leveraging this positive slice of the demographic pie. Companies such as Wipro,
Tata, Mindtree, GenPact, Symphony Services and Mphasis have recognised that the
disabled can solve many persistent human resource problems and are hiring the
disabled in encouraging numbers.

Across all sectors companies can employ people with disabilities that map to
specific jobs. For instance, the BPO industry has greater than 50% attrition of
current employees due to mismatch of job aspirations. Back-end data processing
can be handled by majority of physically disabled or those with speech and
hearing impairment.

Recently, Gitanjali Gems Ltd announced a training centre in Hyderabad that
would provide jobs to 1,000 PwDs. Others are creating similar examples in a bid
to use a resource that has so far remained hidden. Today's economy has the
ability to deliver a win-win solution for the disabled in society and for
corporate India.

Businesses have begun to recognise the wealth that exists in PwDs. They are
putting in place processes and support systems that can fine-tune this talent
to meet their needs. It is a momentous change silently taking place within the
folds of corporate India.

Organisations like the Wadhwani Foundation are propelling the change with their
mission of mainstreaming the educated disabled in corporate India. The
Foundation is driving training and placement of 1,00,000 disabled (in five
years) into sustainable high quality jobs within corporate India. They hope
that the companies will recognise the business value through these initial
hires and recruit the remaining educated millions, making it a self-sustaining
model. The Foundation works with companies to identify functional areas and
required competencies for potential jobs within the enterprise; it then
recruits and trains candidates in these competencies; and finally it
facilitates placement and provides post-placement support to the company and
the candidate. By matching skills to abilities of disabled candidates and
providing targeted, market -linked vocational training that is relevant to the
needs of employers, it enables PwDs to offer higher quality of work over a
sustained period of time. The Foundation's approach, which is replicable, has
delivered success in a wide variety of industries such as business process
outsourcing, remote infrastructure management, retail sales and facilities
management.

On the other hand, industry

2012-05-02 Thread Geetha Shamanna
Hi Pranay,

AICB had brought out a book sometime ago with a compilation of articles on
jobs that are suitable for blind/visually impaired job seekers in India.
This book might well be out of date now, but it can serve as a starting
point for Eyeway to embark on a new and a more up-to-date compilation
reflecting current realities.

Subject: [AI] Career/education reading resource

Hi all,
We are looking for a book/reading resource which provides basic information
about various career/occupations available in the country, describing what
it involves, and the relevant qualifications & skills required for them. We
guess there could be a mainstream publication available in the market which
would list the hot jobs/education for students coming out of school/college
education. Certainly such a book/reading resource available in as many
languages as possible would be helpful.

The idea is to share this book with the young boys and girls with
blindness/low-vision, who lack the overall exposure and know about very
limited options, and so do not make an informed choice and sometimes do not
set their goals high enough. Though this book could contain fields currently
inaccessible and unexplored by blind people, knowing all this too would
widen the knowledge of the readers. Even if such a book is available in
print and not available in e-text/audio/braille format, it can be converted.

Would appreciate if anyone knowing about any such material can apprise us
about it. We have seen similar titles available on bookshare.org, but
haven't explored it and guess it would be more relevant for the educated &
exposed, or people in US and other developed countries.

thanks and best wishes,

Re: [AI] Using escalators

2012-05-02 Thread Geetha Shamanna
Hi Mohit,

As Pranav pointed out, it is easier to use an escalator if you hold on to
the railing on the right as you place your feet on the escalator. This way,
if your feet are midway between two steps (it can happen, as the steps come
up or go down when the escalator starts moving), then you can either step
down or step up without losing your balance. Ensure that you always hold on
to the railing on the right side of the escalator, as the left side is for
people who wish to walk up or down the escalator.

Also, if you are a cane user, place your cane on the step ahead of you. As
the escalator moves up or down, you can feel the steps going up or down.
When the escalator nears its destination, it is easy to spot the final step
if your cane is on the step ahead of you. You are then not suddenly thrown
off the escalator without you realising it.

Hope this helps.

Re: [AI] swimming training for the blind

2012-05-02 Thread Vamshi. G
Hi sir,

I have undergone swimming training 6 years ago. I had reasonably good
vision at that time. Luckily, the hotel at which I underwent the
training is at a far away place and hence there weren't many people
swimming. The trainer did not resist at all and was very cooperative.
The only adjustment he made was to orally explain everything to me
instead of showing the movements to me. I requested him to make any
physical adjustments by holding my hand so that I can understand it
better. Overall, it was a good experience without any problem. Even
though I am not an efficient swimmer, I still love to swim
occasionally in pools.

Dear all,

Does anyone has undergone swimming training at a commercial swimming

I am curious to know the experience. Was there resistance from the trainers?
Did the trainers adopt any different method for training?

Hi Mohit,

You can brush your teeth any number of times, but if the technique is not
right, or there is some dental issue you aren't aware of, it won't change
the condition that exists. This is why I suggested a trip to the dentist to
ensure you are aware of the make up of your teeth and the necessary care it
requires. So, just brushing your teeth many times over won't help.

Hi Payal,

Thanks a million for your informative response.
I will surely implement your suggestions.

However, I would like to make a clarification here.
When I say I brush thrice, I mean that I repeat the same procedure of
applying toothpaste and brushing my teeth 3 times in one brush itself.
So, when I brush in the morning, I repeat that procedure 3 times.
I mostly do that because I don't know whether my teeth have become
perfectly white after brushing or not.

Controversially yours,
Mohit

Hi

Can someone help me to resolve this?

Sometimes the number keys don't work on my Nokia N86 phone which makes it
tough during emergency situations. When this happens, I helplessly end up
turning off my phone and switch it back on again to make the keys work.

Thanks

When applying the toothpaste on the brush I first clean my forefinger and
then apply the paste on my finger before I apply it to the brush. This way
I'm sure of how much of paste I'm using.

Collection of 32 or less than that.
But since it is the established practice, and handed down to us by our

We practice it with out any question.
Now, what i feel, in order to get the idea that whether yur teeth have been

yur teeth are cleaned.
Since totally blind can't distinguish whether his/her's teeth are yellow,
red or white, then, tongue has vital role to play.
When I wake up in the morning, and touch my teeth with my tongue I feel ya,
something is there. and when i complete brushing for two or three minutes,
then touch my teeth with tongue, I sense now its fine, something is gone
which was there .

Also, how can I make sure that I've brushed my teeth properly and correctly?
I have a strange and insane habit of brushing my teeth thrice to
ensure that nothing remains behind and everything gets covered.
This often leads to immense wastage of toothpaste and leaves behind
even more squiggles of paste.
So, please guide me in this matter.

You can mail me off-list if you don't wanna talk about this publicly.

Controversially yours,
Mohit

Re: [AI] Applying toothpaste

2012-05-02 Thread Sandeep Singh

Dear friend,
You really dont need to do that. Brushing about 5 minutes is enough,
you dont need to reload your gun again and again. Brush instead in
the morning and after dinner before you go to sleep, that will ensure
your oral hygiene.

Sandeep

So, when I brush in the morning, I repeat that procedure 3 times.
I mostly do that because I don't know whether my teeth have become

Hi,
Just a few more points :
use ultra soft brush, hard brush is not good for the enamel.
As Payal suggests, go easy on your teeth, use the brush gently in
sideways direction and up down parallel to teeth joints. That is what
the dentists suggest.

But of course, you can always go and consult one.

was my first pertinent question when I put myself through rehab, and this is
what I learned...

To apply toothpaste clean and clear on the bristles, hold your toothbrush
between your thumb and forefinger by the bristles. This way you know the
length of the bristles and have a point of reference when you apply
toothpaste. Use the other hand to squeeze the toothpaste onto the bristles
which have the reference of your fingers holding it and no extra will go
beyond the length of them. Start squeezing the tube from the beginning of
the bristles to the end and let it go. Does this make sense?

As for oral hygine, most dentists today give you the exact instructions to
brush, floss and use a mouthwash to ensure you have no food particles or
odour left. Twice is in any case the recommended number of times one should
brush your teeth, but if you feel like you're not sure of how your mouth
smells after a meal, go ahead and brush again. Go easy on the teeth, you may
end up with no enamel and need a capping instead. Just being funny, but I
would suggest you see a dentist and ask the hyginenist there to help you
with the exact technique of brushing your teeth and any other care you may
need. A regular enough routine with that should help.

Long drawn instructions, hopefully of some help there.

Re: [AI] Differently abled CA aspirants oppose new scribe guidelines

2012-05-02 Thread Eyeway Helpdesk
Hi all,
Just learnt from Subhash Vashishth that today he has got favourable order in
this matter from the Chief Justice of Delhi high court. The exams for many
students are starting tomorrow.

Subhash is waiting to receive the copy of the order, and will circulate as he
gets it. In the meantime he asked to share the following points:
The court ordered the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India to withdraw
the 3 conditions - namely the writer cannot be above age 20, the writer not to
be a relative, and same writer to write all the papers. The court has also
ordered them to put up the changed rules on their website by tonight, and to
get it published in all national dailies circulated tomorrow morning.

Do forward this news as wide as possible to reach all students and other
interested people.

Kudos to Subhash, and to those students who took the matter to him!

Subject: [AI] Differently abled CA aspirants oppose new scribe guidelines

*Differently abled CA aspirants oppose new guidelines
Ananya Panda
Tribune News Service*

New Delhi, April 29

Differently abled Chartered Accountancy aspirants, who will take the May 3
exam to be conducted by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India
(ICAI), were taken aback by seeing the three-page document titled
“Guidelines and procedure to be followed regarding granting of writer/
extra time to the differently abled candidates” received just days before
the exams along with the admit cards.

It was a set of revised guidelines on scribes for candidates with
disabilities, none of which are mentioned in the exhaustive section
detailing about the instructions to examinees on the website of the ICAI, a
statutory government body.

The said document, effective from May 2012 exams, was the result of ICAI’s
executive committee meeting held on January 18 and adopted by its
examination committee. Yet the country’s national accounting body chose to
remain silent that has left the section of persons with disabilities,
including those with no vision, blindness, neurological impairment, loss of
limb or temporary impairment, helpless. Those with hearing loss are not
covered.

The recently issued guidelines in question are: the writer should not be
above 20 years of age as on the date of exam; the writer should be the same
person for all the papers of an examination; no request for change of
writer shall be permitted; and the writer should not be a relative of the
candidate.

Affected candidates maintained that the guidelines are illogical, arbitrary
and work against the spirit of The Persons with Disabilities Act, 1995, and
the step is open discrimination and discouragement for differently abled
aspirants to enrol for the course.

The objectionable guidelines have put the fate of nearly 300 examinees in
dark, who have expressed inability in finding writers qualifying under the
new rules owing to exam days.

“The instructions on the institute’s website are silent on the conditions
that are put forth. These instructions are unreasonable and discriminatory
against differently abled persons and defy the objective and mandate of the
Disabilities Act. The differently abled students are in shock, but are
unwilling to speak up in fear of backlash,” said disability rights activist
Subhash Chandra Vashishth, who has taken up the matter with the Chief
Commissioner - Disabilities after the students approached him.

The national accounting body was not keen on listening to the disabled
section’s concerns and told them to drop the year if they fail to meet the
fresh set of criteria.

*Not in right spirit*

   - Affected candidates say the guidelines are illogical, arbitrary and
work against the spirit of The Persons with Disabilities Act, 1995
   - They allege the step is open discrimination and discouragement for
differently abled aspirants to enrol for the course

Re: [AI] Using escalators

2012-05-02 Thread Zujar Shabbir Kanchwala
I use escalators frequently. Once I am on the floor, I hold the
railing and slowly move one foot towards it. When I sense it moving
up, I immediately lift my other foot on to the same step. When nearing
the target, I bend my feet a little for them to sense the floor when
the escalator step slides in and my footwear heels remains in air.
This exercise helps me step out of the escalator safely. I have
devised these tricks for myself after several trips and experiments.
Hope they prove helpful to you.

Re: [AI] Using escalators

2012-05-02 Thread payal
We've had a long drawn discussion on the best practices for using escalators
a while ago with some excellent tips and inputs from persons traveling
overseas and in the country facing the often daunting experience of using
escalators. I think it was Prateek Agrawal who had initiated the thread.
Maybe if you looked up the older posts of the list, all your questions would
be answered.

As for using elevators or escalators, it is a personal preference. Some
persons are not comfortable using the escalator and feel safer in an
elevator, while others prefer things the other way around. I think an
escalator is quicker once you've got over the initial hesitation of using
it. It is constantly in motion and one rarely needs to wait to use it, while
the elevator takes much longer andoften one needs to wait long endless
minutes to get onto one. My own views, these.

Hi folks,

Nowadays, almost all malls have escalators.
So, do you all use escalators in malls, or do you prefer the elevator?
If you do use escalators, then please inform me about the way in which
you manage to use it successfully and safely.

Thanks and regards,
Mohit

Re: [AI] Applying toothpaste

2012-05-02 Thread payal
Mohit,

Relevant questions, these are. Nothing to be ashamed of and certainly better
to ask than be caught with a situation you'd rather not have to face. This
was my first pertinent question when I put myself through rehab, and this is
what I learned...

Subject: [AI] Applying toothpaste

2012-05-02 Thread Pranav Lal
Hi Mohit,

I use escolaters all the time. This is one area where I dispense with
a sighted guide. The trick is to hold the railing on the side of the
escolater and step on to it. Your feet will tell you when you are
going to reach the next floor. Similarly, keep track of the floor
before the escolater. It is distinct and this is true across the
world.

There are also times where you can hear the sound of the motor that
drives the escolater so you know that there is one around.

The shared information below on IBPS CWE Projects may be of help to some of you

This is in response to my yesterday's email regarding procedure for retrieving
lost password of IBPS CWE Clerks Project 2011 in case a candidate has deleted
both his email as well as SMS containing the registration number as well as the
password generated by IBPS after applying online.

The candidate neither will find any option for retrieving the password on the
IBPS website nor will he find it on any of the 19 public sector banks' website
for which he is eligible to apply. In that case or even for resolving other
difficulties related to IBPS CWE projects he can contact on 022-29687249,

Dear students

I want that every student who are doing CA, CS, ICAWA arise voice for
guideline which draws by ICAI because it is not only for CA's students and
it is about all professional course i.e. CS, ICAWA because history is
evidence, "CS and ICAWA institute are try to copy the guideline which is
formed by ICAI"

For instance, CS institute also convert the subjective foundation paper
into objective foundation paper as CPT

ICAI draw new guideline for IPCC and final exam is more extent copied from
guideline which are followed by IIM for cat entrance exam but not for MBA
exam which held in IIM after getting admission and,

There is another guideline for MBA exam is that scribe should be one class
below the candidate [i.e. should be undergraduate ] and second guideline
is scribe may be post graduate but should have be other stream [ i.e.
scribe's stream should not be same the candidate ]

Cat entrance exam is objective based exam and after taking admission MBA
exam is subjective exam, and so, IIM draws two guideline for it.

But ICAI draw these guideline for subjective exam which is not well and
unfamiliar for visually challengeable person

Cat entrance exam guideline are available on websites

www.catiim.in

and then go on link DA FAQS

and read Q.6 and 7

but for another guideline [MBA exam ] you should be contact to IIM institute
because it is not available on websites

I hope that this mail is useful for you

ICAI's officers are not much supportive according to my bad experience with
this institute

Please share yours views on it

[AI] Career/education reading resource

2012-05-02 Thread Eyeway Helpdesk
Hi all,
We are looking for a book/reading resource which provides basic information
about various career/occupations available in the country, describing what it
involves, and the relevant qualifications & skills required for them. We guess
there could be a mainstream publication available in the market which would
list the hot jobs/education for students coming out of school/college
education. Certainly such a book/reading resource available in as many
languages as possible would be helpful.

The idea is to share this book with the young boys and girls with
blindness/low-vision, who lack the overall exposure and know about very
limited options, and so do not make an informed choice and sometimes do not set
their goals high enough. Though this book could contain fields currently
inaccessible and unexplored by blind people, knowing all this too would widen
the knowledge of the readers. Even if such a book is available in print and not
available in e-text/audio/braille format, it can be converted.

Would appreciate if anyone knowing about any such material can apprise us about
it. We have seen similar titles available on bookshare.org, but haven't
explored it and guess it would be more relevant for the educated & exposed, or
people in US and other developed countries.

thanks and best wishes,
