[AI] Market for Audio Books in India.

2013-09-26 Thread Apoorv Kulkarni
Dear all,

I am currently associated with booksTALK mentioned in the article. While us VI
folks primarily use audio media for consuming content, more and more
non-disabled folks are beginning to enjoy audiobooks. For example, one of our
customer happily reported that where he did not read a single book in previous
14 months, he finished our audiobooks called Jaya (Mahabharatha) and The Secret
of The Nagas in 2 weeks. Many of my sighted friends also enjoy listening to
audiobooks now. I hope that this trend continues so that we have more and more
audiobooks coming out.

Re: [AI] VI persons in politics

2013-06-17 Thread Apoorv Kulkarni
Dear all,

This is turning out to be an interesting discussion.

I understand that the visually challenged community is not of a substantial
size to be able to effectively influence an election. However, how about we
broaden the scope and rally the entire disabled community at large. Further,
if we were able to enlist support of the family and friends of the members
of the disabled community, perhaps we would be able to reach a critical
mass.

Dear All

The following email is self explanatory and needs our urgent endorsement, If
the treaty for the visually impaired is to succeed at all. Please sign the
following two online petitions and also link them to your social networking
sites. Awareness on the issue needs to go viral. It is sad that vested
interests want to derail the labour of many years and keep the blind in the
dark.

Your immediate co-operation is solicited.

The first one is as follows

Dear Friends:Blind and print-disabled people in the United States and across
the world need your help to relieve the worldwide book famine that prevents
us from receiving an education, attaining employment, and fully
participating in society. The World Intellectual Property Organization is
considering a treaty that would make more books available to blind and
print-disabled people all over the world by promoting an exception to
copyright law allowing books to be produced in special formats like Braille
and to be shared across international borders. This treaty is called the
Treaty for the Blind or the VIP Treaty. Unfortunately, publishers, big
media, and other rights holders like GE and Caterpillar, some of whom have
nothing to do with the publishing of books at all, are complicating the
negotiations in an attempt to water down or kill the treaty. You can help by
sending a strong message that you support a treaty that helps the blind and
print disabled get access to more books. Please sign the petition at
https://nfb.org/civicrm/petition/sign?sid=2
https://nfb.org/civicrm/petition/sign?sid=2reset=1Also reset=1Also,
please share the petition link with your family, friends, and others who you
feel will support this effort.Thank you for your support.John G. Par?
Jr.Executive Director for Advocacy and Policy NATIONAL FEDERATION OF THE
BLIND

The second petition is It?s not typical for us to send you an email like
this, but we felt this situation was so important it was necessary. You may
already be aware, but for years negotiations have been moving forward on
what many have come to call the Treaty for the Blind. The goal of the
international treaty is to make it possible for people who are blind, or
have other print disabilities such as dyslexia, to get access to the books
they need for education, employment and inclusion in society?no matter where
they live. It's something we already do, with great success, in the United
States through Bookshare. However, private interests are trying to alter the
treaty in such a way that it would become useless?even harmful. For example,
they?re trying to get language adopted that basically says: ?if you can buy
it, you can?t borrow it.? This is not only an attack on people around the
world with print disabilities?it?s also an attack on libraries, like
Bookshare, and could have a drastic effect on the number of books you have
access to. Our biggest worry is this becoming a treaty that could stop
Bookshare from serving our users in the United States the way we do today.
We need our government negotiating for a treaty that supports a library like
Bookshare. That?s why we?re working with a coalition of disability and
library groups, including the National Federation of the Blind and the
American Council of the Blind, to fight back against the proposed changes by
these private interests. We?ll do everything we can to secure a treaty that
both protects the access we have now and that will benefit people with print
disabilities around the world?but we need your help. We?re asking you to
take a moment to sign a petition on the White House?s website that urges the
President to step up his support:http://ow.ly/lkJVs. If we can get to
100,000 signatures, the White House is required to respond to the petition
and will, hopefully, take positive action. With your help we know we can
reach that number. We also recommend the petition at the National
Federation of the Blind?s site, which is particularly accessible. Thank you
for your time and support. Together, we believe that our collective voice
can make a real impact. If you?re interested in more background on the
treaty, here are some articles and resources you can review:Huffington Post
piece by Jim on how the treaty is being poisoned by private interests:

2013-05-23 Thread Apoorv Kulkarni
Dear all,

Firstly, I applaud use of the Accessindia forum for such constructive
initiatives.

As the discussion around this topic is evolving, I imagine that many of us
may be presently considering getting an insurance policy. If any of you are
interested, I would recommend my agent, who himself is disabled, for
consultation. You may finally avail services of your existing/ preferred
agents for getting the policy, but having a conversation with my agent may
help you gain insights into regulations/ procedures for getting a insurance
policy for a disabled individual.

In case anyone is interested, please write to me off-list, and I will be
happy to make a formal introduction with my agent.

2013-05-14 Thread Apoorv Kulkarni
Hi Ekinath,

This is abnormal. You should visit a service centre or retailer and get it
checked. If your phone is within warranty, you should insist on getting a
replacement. I have got my brother's and uncle's phone replaced for a
different problem, so I know first-hand that replacements are normal in case
of any defect.

For your convenience, your nearest retailer is Maple technology in in orbit
maul, and the authorised service centre is in Reliance digital, both in

Hello,

You can try either of the following 3 solutions, listed in order of
preference:

1. Type '0253 Note that there is an apostrophe or single quotation
before 0253. This will convert the format to text

2. Type =0253

3. Change the cell format to Text and then enter 0253. Note that you
will have to first change the format and then enter the STD code. The
reverse may not work.

Hope this helps

[AI] AI magazine (lakshmi siragam)

2013-05-05 Thread Apoorv Kulkarni
Dear all,

It's wonderful to know that there is some interest around starting a monthly
AI magazine. The good news is that a brail lifestyle magazine called White
Paper has recently been started with its first issue being published in
this month. I believe that rather than starting a new AI magazine, we should
start subscribing and contributing to this new magazine. By c consolidating
our effort instead of fragmenting it by introducing a new magazine we will
be able to generate greater value for the community. Besides, printing and
publishing a monthly magazine brings its own a logistical and financial
challenges.

[AI] Delivering a speech or presentation

2013-04-07 Thread Apoorv Kulkarni
Hello Rahul,

You have a very valid point, body language is critical in public speaking.
There's a reason why it is said that actions speak louder than words. Tell
me something, do you find nodding your head whenever you answer a question
in affirmative? Or do you find yourself cowering back whenever you feel
threatened or dominated? You see, your body is talking all the time. It
doesn't matter if you're sighted or, low vision, or blind, your body does
communicate. So when you say that you don't make gestures while delivering a
presentations, it just shows that you are not completely relaxed. For
example, when I stood to deliver my first speech, I made two important
discoveries. One, I had two hands, and two, I had no clue what to do with
them. So, I did what every self-respecting school boy does, I folded my
hands and started reciting my speech from memory. I guess that I must have
looked like a talking statue, for I swear, the only things moving in my
body, besides my heart which was beating like an automatic machinegun, were
my lips. Over a period of time, I have become somewhat better at public
speaking, and in my body language.

So how do you go about working on your body language?

1. Know what you are speaking. It is crucial that you know everything about
your topic of presentation. This does not mean that you memorise your speech
word for word. It just means that you should know your content well enough
that if need be, you should be able to convey the message in your own words.

2. stick to your style. Do you use ornamented language in your day-to-day
interactions? If no, don't use flowery language in your speeches. As the
saying goes, keep it simple silly.

3. modulate your voice. Ok, this needs some work. Try to modulate your
voice in your regular interactions consciously. Once you start doing this,
modulation will become a habit and will come through in speeches naturally.
This will make your speeches more engaging.

4. Pay attention to your hand gestures, and use them often when you
generally talk to people. This habit will make it easier for you to have an
engaging body language in your presentation.

5. Be relaxed while giving presentations. Don't overburden yourself with
expectations. In fact, think that you are the biggest idiot in the room.
Now, you cannot go any lower in the pecking order, can you? Being freed from
any performance pressure, go ahead and deliver an excellent speech.

Lastly, remember that you should have good content in your presentation. An
ineffective body language will not destroy a presentation, but poor content
will surely do. So have crisp and relevant content.

Warm regards all the best for your future presentations,

Apoorv

Re: [AI] Training

2013-04-01 Thread Apoorv Kulkarni
Hello Kanchan mam,

A topic one could cover is how to communicate once nature of disability, and
how to fine tune job responsibilities to enable one to work most
effectively. A parallel example that I can recall is the training a company
use to give its women employees and its managers to bring out points around
working hours for women, work from home for single or expecting mothers,
modifying work settings during pregnancy, etc.

I think that having a professional and non-disabled prospective on
discussing disability at work place will bolster an individual's confidence
to have a mature discussion, without feeling apprehensive or ashamed about
it.

These titles cost between INR 99 to 499. You can download the catalogue from

[AI] Indian audiobook start-up brings Indian best sellers for you

2013-03-24 Thread Apoorv Kulkarni
Dear all,

I recently came across a Bangalore based start-up called, Books Talk. This
company publishes audiobooks of reputed Indian and foreign titles. I just
finished The Secrets of the Nagas by Amish Tripathi published by Books
talk, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I recommend taking a look at their
catalogue of audiobooks. The audiobooks are in English, Bengali and Kanada.
These titles cost between INR 99 to 499. You can download the catalogue from
the link given in this mail.

[AI] Important: Need insights into accessibility of SAP with JAWS for a job interview

2013-01-16 Thread Apoorv Kulkarni
Dear all,

I have a job interview scheduled with an NBFC on 22 Jan. From my initial
inquiry, the NBFC uses SAP and my role would include working on SAP. I
wanted some insights into the level of accessibility of SAP with JAWS. What
would probably be best is if any of you using JAWS to work on SAP on a
day-to-day basis share your experience.

Looking forward to hearing from you,

Re: [AI] Portals on Jobs, scribe and readers - how can we strengthen the initiatives?

2013-01-15 Thread Apoorv Kulkarni
Dear all,

A helpful step may be to educate the prospective employers. Agreed, reaching
employers across India is difficult, and frankly somewhat inefficient.
Alternatively, we can organise presentations at leading business schools
like IIMs, ISB and others to show the students how visually challenged
individuals work. Having seen some talented individuals from VI community
work using assistive technology would help the students gain an educated
prospective. The business schools too, I presume, would encourage such
initiatives as it helps to groom a mature and informed alumni base. These
students would go to reputed organisations and, hopefully, be more receptive
towards visually challenged job applicants. Once the change begins at the
top (market leading companies) and the base (at business schools), it will
gather momentum and spread.

Regards,

Apoorv

[AI] A brief review of Fleksy - an IOS app to make typing easy

2013-01-07 Thread Apoorv Kulkarni
Anyone who uses a touch screen mobile is surely missing their old and
trusted tactile keyboard. Typing on a touch screen takes longer than typing
on a regular mobile. However, a popular app called Fleksy has changed it
all. Believe it or not , typing on a touch screen is a complete delight now.
In fact it is many times better than even using a hard keyboard. This app is
available for IOS and works on iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad.

Basically, Fleksy uses an ultra-powerful predictive text typing technology
which is optimised for touch screens. The user has to tap the screen
approximately trying to hit the desired key. Don't worry, you have to tap
approximately where you imagine the letter is on a qwerty keyboard. The app
detects the relative taps and miraculously guesses the correct word. Adding
punctuations, spaces, deleting or changing words are all achieved using
simple swipe gestures. You can even type custom words like Indian names
which are not there in the app dictionary. Do you use some words which are
not there in the app dictionary often? No problem. The app lets you add new
words to the dictionary, again using simple gestures. Put all these features
together, and you have one of the most intuitive typing experience on any
smart phone. And the best part is that this app works seamlessly with
voiceover.

The app comes with easy to understand detailed instructions. What's more,
the app is free so that you can try it without any risk. However, in the
free version, you can just experiment with the typing and can't do anything
much. To use the app to send messages, emails, tweets etc., you will have to
upgrade by making an in app purchase. The upgrade will cost you around Rs.
200, but it will be the best Rs. 200 you would have spent.

To see a video demonstration of fleksy, visit
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9YP5goKA4dQ

Overall, the app works like magic and has a very short learning curve. It is
so good that you would want to send text messages just so that you can use
this app. This app gets 5 stars from me.

To get the app from iTunes, visit
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/fleksy-happy-typing/id520337246?mt=8

Re: [AI] Announcing new service of NAB Helpline

2013-01-04 Thread Apoorv Kulkarni
Dear all,

I think that this is a wonderful initiative. I would be delighted to
volunteer as a trainer in Mumbai.

I am proficient with MS Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook etc. with Jaws.
Additionally, I also use voiceover on apple iPhone, iPod, and iPad. I have
limited experience with Mac but can help there too.

I can also help in setting up the logistics and in coordination.

I think that such an initiative is extremely useful and required.

Hope to see the initiative gathering momentum in Mumbai,

Regards,

Apoorv

[AI] Software for creating audiobooks

2010-04-20 Thread apoorv kulkarni
Dear All,
I recently came across a software called “Text aloud” from a company
called “Nextup”. The said software can be used to create audio files
from text/word/pdf files. I am sure many of us would find the same
useful for say, reviewing legal documents, news articles, emails,
ebooks converted into audiobook etc. Bothe Sappy 4 and Sappy 5 voices
are supported by the software. Sappy 5 voices can be purchased from
ATNT and a few other companies. I believe that openbook reader from
freedomscientific is another software which can be a substitute of
text aloud. However I did not have the privilege of using the same.
Hope we all find this info useful.
