Actlog shows failure when backups complete.

2001-08-02 Thread Palmadesso Jack

We just moved one of our Netstore machines to 3.7 (on the way to 4.1)

Ever since we moved to it one of the oracle boxes shows failure in the
morning even though I can see it completed by checking its filespace. This
particular box is an NT box running Oracle. There are about 15 9 gig files
that are captured selectively every night. Anything over 1 gig goes to
tape. Is it possible that the new server code is trying to start multiple
sessions? If so how do I limit the number of sessions a client can start?
My best guess is that multiples sessions try to start but when they try to
go to tape one of them does but the rest are waiting for a tape mount
(filespaces are collocated) so they just time out and report as failed. The
one session that survives completes the backup normally.

Thanks for any help

Are you using the search parameter? Try checking the new volume in with the

Have you tried looking at the devconfig.out file to see if it shows the
tapes being removed. I have had a problem where it had empty slots but it
would not take a tape. Some of the tapes ended up showing in two different
slots. Once I made all the changes things worked like it should have.

Hello all fellow TSM'rs

I'm trying as I may to change a vol in a tape library. I succesfully
CHECKOUT a empty scratch volume and then try to CHECKIN a previous vol for
a restore I'm trying to do. When I check tha ACTLOG it tells me the library
is full. I've tried running an AUDIT and it shows only 9 or a possible 10
volumes. I can't seems to get past this. What am I doing wrong? I even
tried another CHECKOUT using the SWAP option and again it successfully
removes a volume but still thinks the library is full

Re: 3 weird Linux problems

We also run a few linux boxes here.

#1 You should consider using the dsmscheduler. It is not very difficult
and is easier to
centrally manage because you manage it from the TSM server.

#2 The web gui uses Java heavily. Make sure all the java options are
turned on in Netscape
or try upgrading Netscape. I get a gray box in Netscape and IE but they
go away. This
seems normal to me. Also make sure you are using Netscape. I've had
wierd results with
other browsers like Konqueror.

#3 We also show more processes than other platforms but it does work and
has been working
for over 8 mos now.

All in all, no problems backing up either of my two redhat 7.1 servers..

Subject: 3 weird Linux problems

I have 3 unusual (to me) problems after installing Tivoli ADSM client
4.1.2
on a RH Linux 7.1 machine with plenty of disk, RAM, etc. I haven't
given
up, but if you have any hints that would be wonderful. Note: our ADSM
server is performing fine with many Windows machines and an AIX.

1. Cron job often segmentation faults.

We're using cron instead of the ADSM scheduler because it's one less
thing
to know. Our VAR says it's probably the cron job running out of RAM and
directed us to /etc/security/limits.conf, but so far I'm clueless what
to
put there. I see references to this in the ADSM mailing list archives
at
http://www.mail-archive.com http://www.mail-archive.com

2. Can't browse to ADSM web server (dsmcad).

Paints a gray square and quits. VAR says to make sure my web browser
has
Java Virtual Machine installed. I believe it does - IE 5.5 and IE 6.0 -
works with another site that requires JVM.

3. Four dsmcad processes.

When I stop and restart dsmcad, 4 processes start up. VAR has no ideas.
The only thing 4 about this machine that I can think of is that it has
4
processors. VAR does not think this is causing problem # 2.

Thanks!

Audit vol fails

2001-07-12 Thread Palmadesso Jack

Good mornining all,

One of my DLT IV tapes seems to have gone bad last night. When I try to run
an audit vol fix=yes on the volume the system complains that there was an
i/o error while trying to read the vol label. This causes the process to
fail. I have no way of mounting this vol and there is data on it. Other
than recreating the vol from the copy pool is there another way to fix this?

I have a IBM 3575 library and have had similar events a couple of times. My

understanding of what happens is this. Some error happens on tape drive and
tape won't dismount, so *SM still thinks tape is mounted - drive in use.
Then we
dismount tape through other than *SM methods. *SM doesn't know this. The
only
way I have found to fix is to restart *SM - and I always run a library audit
to clear
any tape location issues.

To clear tape, if it's not damaged, I would do a MOVE DATA on the suspect
tape.
Could also do an audit volume to check it.

Hello all and welcome to tape/drive hell.

Last night I just happened to be looking at TSM from home when I discovered
2 tape drives offline. When I tried to change the status I received the
following message:
07/11/01 20:41:26 ANR8413E UPDATE DRIVE: Drive RMT4 is currently in use.

07/11/01 20:54:15 ANR8413E UPDATE DRIVE: Drive RMT1 is currently in use.

I called operations and discovered they had had an alert on rmt1. A tape was
mounted and could not be removed by TSM so they removed it. Seems as though
an almost exact thing happened to rmt4 and the tape would not come out. Did
they call me, no...did they call IBM, noI took care of that, fortunately
I just happened to be online and discovered this.

I still could not get the drives online, even after IBM says they fixed
things, so my solution was to restart the system. Sure maybe I could have
brought down TSM and restarted it alone, but I didn't feel like wasting time
and then discovering I needed to restart the system anyway. This way I'm
covered all the way around, if this didn't work IBM would be getting another
call. The restart workedbut for how long? I'll have to keep an eye on
things today while the drives are busy copying data. In the mean time I need
to figure out how to get the data from this tape(s) moved.

The other burning question is, after IBM fixed things, why couldn't I get
the drives back online through TSM? Why the restart?

I have recently implemented TSM v4.1.3 and have encountered a problem with
my diskpool volumes. I currently have disk storage volumes in three
locations: locally on the TSM server, NAS (network attached storage device),
and on another network server. What is happening is that the storage
volumes that are not local on the server are changing their status from
read/write to readonly and/or varying themselves offline while the local
volume has never mysteriously changed its' status. Initially, I suspected
it might have had something to do with the NAS so I defined several volumes
on other network servers only to have them do the same thing. I haven't
been able to identify an event that might cause this to happen because it
seems random. I have had them change their status within minutes of
correcting up to a day or so. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I thought that what I would have to do is

 1) do a full database backup of the 3.1.0.5 instance

 2) copy my relevant files (dsmserv.dsk, etc.) to the new
DSMSERV_DIR (/usr/tivoli/tsm/server/bin)

 3) start the TSM 4.1 server with 'dsmserv upgradedb'

 4) re-register all of my licenses

Hi there,

In our test-shop we are trying to migrate our ADSM 3.1.2.90 database (on AIX
4.3.3 - IBM S70 server) to TSM 4.1 (on OS/390 v2.9). Both servers are using
3590-E drives. We are experiencing problems however. This is probably a
configuration error on OS/390. But before we continue, we would like to know
the following;
I've read somewhere that it isn't possible to migrate from 3.1 to 4.1
without updating to 3.7 first. Is this true?

Is it in anyway possible to move from 3.1 based on AIX to 4.1 based on
OS/390, and if so, can anyone tell us what path to take to get this to work.

Why are we doing this tests?
We are trying to find out if it is usefull for us to run TSM on mainframe
rather than on AIX.
If you are willing to share your experiences with us, we would grately
appreciate it.

Thanx in advance.

All,

We just had a meeting with our support people for TSM, regarding
finishing
the project we have.

To cut things short, one of the options we required was Bare Metal
Restore
of NT and Unix servers.

Our TSM server sits on an NT server.

We were just informed (and this is what I want to ask about) that
the BRM
server (TSM) module, does not operate if the TSM server is on an NT
server.
(As I understand from their explanation, there is the TSM server
side module
and the client module).

So in effect, we cannot impliment BRM due to this factor.

Does anyone know if this is true ?

Expanding ADSM DB Using Raw Logical Volumes. help please

2001-04-16 Thread Palmadesso Jack

One of our older ADSM servers DB hit 98% over the weekend. I am putting
together a proceedure to grow its DB. As far as I can tell these are the
steps I need to take. First here is the hardware and software levels.

RS6k F30
ADSM 3.1.2 level 40 (has been running smooth as silk for years)upgrade to 4
in progress
AIX 4.1.5 (I know its old)
Breece Hill Q47 w/3 DLT 4000 (attached as standard SCSI Library)
All Storage pools and DB vols are on Raw Logical Volumes.
We use ADSM mirroring for DBs

These are the steps I've come up with.

1. Move Data from chosen storage pool vols

2. Vary off the volumes I have already chosen from ADSM

3. Delete the vols from ADSM

4. In Smitty rename the volumes to reflect new status of DB vols
instead of stg vols

5. Peform DSMFMT for DB on newly renamed vols.

6. Add vols (1 primary and 1 mirror) to ADSM DB

7. Extend DB

Anybody see anything wrong with these steps?

Re: Expanding ADSM DB Using Raw Logical Volumes. help please

2001-04-16 Thread Palmadesso Jack

Thanks to everybody who helped out today. The Db extend went great and was
actually quicker than doing this with a jfs file system because you don't
have to do a dsmfmt.
Here are the steps I took:

chose 2 stg vols on different disks.

made sure no sessions or processes were active that could affect those vols

performed a move data on both vols

varied both vols offline

matched vols in ADSM with those in AIX and took note

deleted both vols from ADSM

In Smitty I was able to rename both vols instead of deleting them

Added the new vols back into ADSM
if you ever do this make sure you name the new vol with a leading "r" This
is nessasary to let ADSM know that it is a raw volume.
example: /dev/radsm_db4

performed an extend DB

:-)

actually you should be able to vary offline a storage volume...
if you have clients currently accessing your server (pushing data) the
proper way to set a stg volume to readonly so you may move data off it and
delete it would be

vary offline some_stg_vol
upd some_stg_vol acc=reado
vary online some_stg_vol
move data some_stg_vol
(when done)
delete some_stg_vol
then do the smitty voodoo magic to delete the logical volume and redefine it
with the new name of your choice, followed up with
define dbvol xxx
define dbcopy xxx yyy
extend db
then :-) :-) :-)

Thank you. I have not went ahead with anything yet. I was suspicious of
the dsmfmt command because there is no filname to specify with raw volumes!
I inherited 2 old ADSM servers that are using all raw vols for ADSM. I've
never had to work directly with the volumes before and the admin V3 manuals
really don't say much about them. So now would this be the correct
proceedure? Database backup already performed by the way.

1. Move Data from chosen storage pool vols

2. Vary off the volumes I have already chosen from ADSM
Storage pool vols cannot be varied off so I guess move to the next
step?

3. Delete the vols from ADSM

4. In Smitty rename the volumes to reflect new status of DB vols
instead of stg vols

5. Define db vol and copy

6. Extend DB

And it should all be happy?

OOOPPPSss
with raw logical volumes you can't run dsmfmt against them...
you just do a define dbvol define dbcopy with the /dev/rblah
I've used raw volumes in the past for db log vols, that works...
now though, I tend to go ahead and use JFS files for db log and raws for
storage volumes but I went through a wave of improper handling of raw
volumes in AIX 4.2, you should still be OK in aix 4.1

Re: Backup of Remote Sites

2001-04-04 Thread Palmadesso Jack

We do this also with over 150 sites. Normal file restores are not a problem
but if the box fails or corrupts itself then we rebuild a box here and let
them run over the WAN until we can ship it out over the weekend. For boxes
coming in over the wan I have a client option set that makes sure they use
compression since some of our links are very slow (56K) Its all been working
well here for years.

The only warning I would give is if you are using any type of connect agent
you may want to make sure you are using a fast enough link. The exchange
agent especially is not very forgiving of "bumps" in the network. I believe
this is a safety mechanism built into the agent that protects the integrity
of the stores. When we first started using Exchange some backups would take
over 36 hours. Any "bump" in the network would cause the whole thing to
fail and we would have to start all over again. Now all sites that warrant
their own Exchange Server automatically get their own TSM server.

they run fine but my network speeds are a little better than what you've

dedicated lines. Theses sites currently are running
their own backups via NTBackup. We are concerned that
these backups are unreliable/not offsite/not being done.
The dedicated lines are mostly 256Kbs lines but a few
are smaller. Is it a good idea to try to back up these
sites across the WAN using *SM? We realize that the first
backup would take a while, but after we suffer through that,
the amount of changed data would be small. Is it a good
idea in this case to turn on client compression? Any
 suggestions would be appreciated.

Re: SAN Solution

2001-03-13 Thread Palmadesso Jack

Hi Geoff,
One of my machines is configured exactly the same way except for the TSM
part(in the works.) We have recently installed a large EMC backend for our
Solaris and NT machines. I've been asked the same question as you. Here is
what I found out. Yes you can backup over a SAN.

BUT it currently only works with certain agents. From what I was told you
can use the Oracle, Exchange and SQL agents. Currently the normal
backup/archive client software does not support SAN backups but is in the
works.

From a hardware perspective if you have 3590 E drives then you can convert
them from SCSI to Fibre Channel and put them on the SAN. This is the
supported config. The biggest problem right now is that the 3494 itself
does not have SAN capability. Unfortunately this was the show stopper for
me. For the time being I am preparing for eventual attachment to the SAN by
upgrading as many other things as I can with the last step being the upgrade
of the 3494. Things are changing very quickly in this area so what may have
been so last week no longer may be true. You definitely want to talk with
the TSM folks and your backend storage provider.

My answer is always no you have to restore everthing or you have to change

Re: TSM Trivia Question

If that little lightning bolt is there then that means you specified its URL
for the Client acceptor piece. If you click on it it should bring up that
nodes web client. You can use that to perform client functions
(backup, retrieve, archive, restore) Three things have to be in place for it to
work. You must have the client acceptor and remote client agent installed
on the node. The client acceptor must be started but leave the remote
client agent alone in manual. The node must be able to be resolved somehow
either dns or a host file. I would assume netbios names would work if you
are on a windows box but its probably best to use dns.

Anyone,

I have just installed the 4.1.1 Netware client on one of my servers, after
we shifted from ADSM to TSM server.

After I enter the line to start a scheduled backup, I get the following
prompt :

Please enter NetWare user for "nwserver":

In the previous clients, If this happened, I entered the user who has rights
for backup, using the full contextual name, ie, .backup.organization

When I do that now, it throws me out, and the log file (error) shows the
following :

The log file shows :

03/05/2001 17:08:19 Scheduler has been stopped.

Does anyone have any idea what format the user name should take to be
accepted ?

I have only one user who has backup rights, and I do not want to create a
user for backups on each server.

Anyone ?

Make sure the client acceptor piece and the Remote client agent piece are
installed. Also make sure the client acceptor piece is started. If they
are you may want to try reinstalling them using the dsmcutil program

How is your policy defined on your disk storage pool? It is possible that
the file that is being sent is too large to fit in your disk pool or your
policy dictates that any file over X MB goes directly to tape.

Hi all,
I trying to implement a server to server infrastructure. I plan to have :
1 "Master" Server in HQ with a tape library (STK L700 with 6LTO drive,
connected to a 8xPIII NT server)
1 or more "Slave" server in other site, connected to HQ thru a WAN
connection.
This solution will be used to backup PC during the day (Has made now on the
HQ Site only).

The idea is to used the slave server as a "Buffer" server during the day for
the backup, and transfering data between slave to master during the night.

I define a destination Disk StgPool (To receive data from slave) with a
migration on Tape StgPool on the master.
My issue is that data goes directly to tape. And I don't want, the WAN
connection does not provide enought bandwith to feed the LTO (15MB/s).

I try to put offline the tape drive, but the process Failed with the
following message :ANR0522W Transaction failed for session 2531 for node
_TSMSRV_BKP00 (WindowsNT) - no space available in storage pool BKP0X_BUFPOOL
and all successor pools.

Does anybody has already implement Server to Server infrastructure thugh WAN
connection ?

Thanks.

Hello ADSM co-workers

I am running ADSM 3.1.2.2 on a NSM C00. We have a disk storage pool called
INCDISK with the high threshold set to 70 and the low set to 30. Our main
clients are SQL servers. All clients backup to the SQLFLAT backup copy group
which is tied to the INCDISK storage pool. The INCDISK storage pool will
migrate to the INCTAPE storage pool when necessary.

The issue that I have observed is that when the %utilised went over the 70%
high threshold then migration did not kick in. I waited until the %utilised
reached 92% and still migration did not occur. Query mount showed all drives
had tapes mounted, but when I queried the activity log to try and understand
what had mounted these volumes I could not come to and solid conclusion.
However I do suspect that restore operations where the culprit. This was
further backed up by entries informing me that earlier migration processes
had been pre-empted. I eventually dismounted the volumes half expecting
migration to kick in, but it didn't. I eventually got migration to work by
lowering both thresholds to 0.

What I am not too sure about is whether migration is actually pre-empted by
a restore operation. If this is the case then surly this is wrong. Surely
migration is more important as this is the safety valve before the storage
pool reaches 100%. Does anybody know the order of precedence for
pre-emption?

Can anybody confirm or add to me conclusions. Thanks for your time.

First stop the scheduler on the node then disable sessions on the server and

Re: commvault

2001-01-24 Thread Palmadesso Jack

Thomas,

We had Commvault give a presentation here late last year. Here is the good
and bad things I gathered up.

GoodStuff: Comvault has the ability to backup and restore indivudual
Exchange mailboxes and documents. From what I remember you have the ability
to backup and restore Exchange up in 3 ways. Supposedly MS uses this
product themselves for some of thier Exchange enviroment.

1)The full online backup/restore
2)Backup/restore at the mailbox level
3)Backup/restore at the document level

BadStuff: Comvault will have you belive that all of these backups take place
at the same blazing speed but anybody who has any experience with the ADSM
Lotus Notes 4.6 Agent knows differently. You will take a GIGANTIC
performace hit if you do document level. Expect the initial document level
backup to take a few days to finish. Also expect your backup servers DB to
grow 3Xs its size when it started. Normal everyday incremental backups will
probably take most of the night. We did get them to admit that you would
see very serious performance hits you wanted to back Exchange up in any
other way than the Full Backup method. The API Comvault uses is NOT a
Microsoft API so you can forget about any support from MS if you need to
recover. Comvault becomes your support when you use thier product.

There would be no other reason to use Comvault unless you used its ability
to backup and restore individual mailboxes. We were impressed with the
ability to do lower level backups in Exchange. This would definitely be
useful because its a real pain to rebuild an Exchange server to get one
mailbox. From past experience with the Notes agent it sounds like too high
of a cost. We have been doing ok with the deleted item recovery so far. I
would like to hold out for Exchange 2000 with its multiple information
stores and deleted the mailbox recovery additions. At this time we have not
yet decided to test this product.

std input sounds like stdin which would be your keyboard. Check to see if
it plugged in. If it is then you may have a bad keyboard. Try another one.
If that doesn't work you may have a bad port. You can still control your

I believe all the problems you are describing can be taken care of by
applying the latest service updates. In the past when I would encounter
these problems the only solution was to stop and restart the server. If you
are nervous about that just make sure you have a good db backup before you
experiment. I remember seeing these problems come up when certain commands
like q node was executed while expiration was running. It would hang until

Re: SMS Scripting for NT installation

2001-01-16 Thread Palmadesso Jack

The new windows installer service that goes in with the new client is
responsible for at least one of the reboots. Someone one the list said
awhile back that if IE5.5 exists on the client already then a reeboot will
not be necessary. I tried this one one client and it worked without a
reeboot. We also tried putting the new MDAC(MS Data Access Components) this
added the windows installer service but in some cases it still required a
reeboot. All in all its not very consistent behavior. All NT boxen are at
sp5 at least (very few at 6a) and all were upgrades from ADSM client 3.1.7.
I blame the new MS code that is introduced in the new clients probably put
there for w2k support.

As far as scripting an install there is a lengthy one line command that
interfaces with the new MS installer service that can be used to install the
client in the background with no intervention (silent install) On every
machine I've used the command on it caused a Dr Watson. The install
finishes anyway and the client seems to operate just fine but I am not about
to release that out to the NT admins. I am sure they will have a cow over
that. So I just wrote up some docs to walk them thru the install. So far
there have been no problems. You may be able to get around the pop up by
directly running the setup.exe instead of the .msi file.

For this reason I use the Backup Client on my workstation with the Nodename

Then I select the files to restore and start the restore to the original

When the Administrator of the NT-Node does the same from his workstation
everything works fine.

Why is this so? Does NT check the NT-User-permissions or what? That would

that every ADSM-Admin

restore the files, right?
This would be stupid, or not?

Re: Recovery Log Problems while in Normal Mode

2000-12-06 Thread Palmadesso Jack

You may want to expand the size of your recovery log. That would at least
reduce the chances of crashing due to a full recovery log.

The logs will usually fill up if you have alot of sessions going at once.
Or especially if you use the Lotus Notes 4.6 agent. Its my understanding
that some data just cannot be committed to the ADSM Db until the client lets
go of it. In my experience this is not a problem with regular clients but
with ADSM agents this can be a problem. If you have been experiencing some
growth then you will have to expand the DB and Logs eventually. Just
remember the max size of the ADSM recovery log is 5.5 gigs. I wouldn't
expand past 5 gigs to be safe.

My recovery log filled up and crashed the server this morning. I have the

impression that the recovery log would not fill up and crash the system
while in normal mode. The log is 1.5 GB and the DB is 13.5 GB. We do a full
DB backup once a day, sometimes twice. When I restarted the server the log
showed up as 0.1% utilized. Does anyone have any idea as to what might cause
the log to fill up? I am running TSM 3.7.3 on Solaris. Thanks,

I have a few clients that recently had the new 4.1.1.16 client for Windows

They've never had another client on them.

Some are running without errors, but several (2 of 20) are getting an error
from
a long time ago:

"The library file ""dsmcperf.dll"" specified for the "TSM Client

The old problem reports on this identified it only with a few client
versions
which I thought were corrected. Also, the error was identified as missing
registry entries. I've checked "well" and "sick" clients and the registry
section similar to the old APARs description was identical.

Has anyone else had these problems? The clients are NT4 SP4, but I have
other
clients of the same OS/SP working just fine.

I don't want to hack the registry and I'm getting complaints from the owners
who
are seeing an log record every 2 minutes.

Re: Your experience with Tivoli Data Protection for MS Exchange

2000-11-13 Thread Palmadesso Jack

I'd have to say we are happy also. We have over 18 exchange servers with 10
to 30 gig dbs. All 18 incremental finish well within 2 hours each day.
Full backups take 1 to 4 hours each depending on the load on our AIX ADSM
server. All Exchange backups are done over gigabit Ethernet. One drawback
is Microsoft's lack of an API that allows message extraction from the
backups. We have a mixed Notes/Exchange mail environment. The Notes users
still enjoy the ability to restore deleted messages long after they were
"accidentally" removed. Exchange users have a 15 day deleted item retention
period they have to go by.

Very happy! We have nine (9) MS Exchange servers with 35GB information

fine. Of course, you have to consider the infrastructure here (Gigabit
Ethernet). All in all, it works well and the Exchange admins are happier
with TSM than they were with Veritas.

Re: RV: Re: Client ver 3.7.2 - no SA software

2000-11-10 Thread Palmadesso Jack

You can use the command line or the command line interface in the web client
to send anything to a flat text file and then import it into anything you
want.

Try q actlog actlog.txt

Or use your own variation. Then import it into any spreadsheet you want.
IMHO this is much easier than the GUI. The Web client isn't that bad when
you get used to it. The command line and gui that is available in the web
client makes it extremely powerful.

There are too many things, in the WWW interface that do not work like the
SA gui or are simply not available.

For instance, I collect data transfer statistics. I do this by going to the
SA GUI client, SERVER ACTIVITY LOG, select all 4961 messages and then
SELECT / PRINT them to a file that is imported into a spreadsheet.

Can't do this with the WWW interface. The output is wrapped (if you just
cut/paste). No option to print to a file or with COMMA DELIM, etc.

The dsmcutil utility can also be used to install the client acceptor and
remote client agent. (This capability has always been there.)

The simplest form of the syntax would be:

dsmcutil install cad /node:yournodename /password:yourpassword
dsmcutil install remoteclientagent /node:yournodename
/password:yourpassword

This requires knowing in advance the nodename and password you wish to use.

The dsmcutil syntax allows you to specify other options as well, such as an
alternate options file.

Sounds like you have an MS installer problem... If you haven't already, you
may need to re-install MSI and/or SP6a. Also, consider doing NT
repair-install (from the decision-path that uses existing disk-based backup
files, not the ERD), as that would be least likely to add to your problem.
This might not be useful if you didn't create new ERD (which updates the
config backup files).

After doing that, re-run the TSM install (maybe un-install first; though
I've never found that to be effective, we had an NT box that recently got
its dsmsched.log corrupted with unintelligible date-time stamps... the cure
was un-install and re-install!) Also, verify your install image on the
failing machine is identical to the success machines.

If all this fails, consider using an incident with Microsoft, as that seems
the most likely source of your symptoms; you did already check the TechNet
K-Base articles for symptoms, right? Hope some of this helps.

It is possible to exclude files with spaces. Just put the whole path in

We could easily rename these folders, however, it would involve also
changing names within various programs. Some, of course, are for Windows,

Therefore, how do I write up a folder name that contains spaces in the

Re: DLT Drive Upgrade

2000-11-01 Thread Palmadesso Jack

This library is also single-ended not differential. I am not a SCSI expert
so I am wondering why you would not just leave the library in single-ended
mode instead of changing all of its guts to work with differential. What is
the gain other than the distance you can run your cable? Breece Hill still
offers both models and I was planning on staying single-ended. Although I
am always open to changes for the better:)

From what I am getting about the new media is that first I need to define a
new device class and specify "drives" for the format to get the maximum
capacity out of the media. Also that data written on filling tapes will
remain in the same format which makes sense. Only data written on new
scratch tapes would benefit from the new drives writing format. That also
make alot of sense.

Assuming that there is no problem reading the media what confuses me a
little is why I would want to define a new device class. In the current
environment the device class is "DLT" and the format is set to "drives."
Those are the only 2 that really matter, correct? As long as I associate
the new drives to that device class I should not have to create any new
device classes. I could just use the existing class and let the drives do
the translations from one format to the next. Am I being too simple?

Jack,
We also have a Breece Hill Q47 with 3 DLT4000 drives. It is no longer
our primary robot, but it used to be. It is true that a DLT7000 or DLT8000
drive should be able to read tapes written by a DLT4000 drive. I *think*
it is true that ADSM will read these tapes also, but I do not have
first-hand experience on that. New tapes that are written will be written
according to the format specified in the device class. Check the
documentation on DEFINE DEVCLASS for more info - look for the section on
DLT drives.

However - the main reason I am responding is the following. When we
looked into upgrading our Q47 to DLT7000, we found that financially it did
not make sense. This is because our robot, and drives, were not
differential SCSI. In order to upgrade to DLT7000 drives, we would not
only have had to replace the drives, but we would have had to upgrade the
library itself to be differential SCSI. The cost of this made it
financially not worth doing. Instead, we opted to purchase a new larger
tape library. I would look into whether your library is differential
already or not, and whether you would also run into this issue or
not. Your library may indeed be differential. I think the reason that
ours was not, was because we purchased it before Breece Hill offered a
differential version of the library.

I believe that new data written to an existing tape, will be written in
the format that is already on that tape. I believe that only newly written
tapes will be written at the higher density, and then only if you have the
device class defined properly.

compatible but mostly thats just from the sales people. Some of the people
around here think a DLT4000 tape should be readable in 7000 or 8000 drive.
Is this correct?

If it is correct then is it possible to just replace the drives in the
library redefine them to AIX and ADSM and continue on? In other words will
ADSM even notice? We are running ADSM 3.1.2 L40 on an RS/6000.

I am thinking it should be fine but I am mainly wondering how new data gets
written back out to media? Will new data being written to tape need to
write on a scratch volume or can it just be written on a filling volume?
Or
is all of this too much of a hassle and I should just buy a new library and
migrate the data over to it? Is there any sort of procedure defined

As to why it stopped in the first place look in the nt event viewer also
review your activity log on the server. Also look in the dsmsched.log and

This question was also asked at Microsoft Exchange Conference '99
and Microsoft addressed it by saying that they hold their
position to NOT introduce it into the "backup and restore" API
because of performance issues and having to break their architecture.

They have chosen to take the following steps when it comes to
restoring individual items to alleviate the problem:

- Exchange 5.5 SP3 - Deleted item retention

- Exchange 2000 - Deleted mailbox retention

- Exchange 2000 - Introduction of storage groups that
split the IS into up to 90 databases.
It allows you to manage those db's
  separately...including restoring
  individual databases without
  affecting other databases.

Re: dsm.opt setting on AIX

2000-10-03 Thread Palmadesso Jack

Under the Unix clients there are 2 files that are nessasary. You need both
the dsm.sys and the dsm.opt. At a minimum you'll need the server name in
the dsm.sys on all Unix clients.

The reasoning behind it all is because Unix is a multiuser system unlike NT.
Each user could customize thier own dsm.opt files to exclude or backup
whatever they like. So under a unix system you could have multiple dsm.opt
files but you will always have only one dsm.sys.

Hi:
Just tried the upgrade to the client TSM 3.7 on the AIX side and get:
[backup] /etc # /usr/tivoli/tsm/client/ba/bin/dsmc sched
ANS1035S Options file '/usr/tivoli/tsm/client/ba/bin/dsm.sys' not found

I assume it's looking for the dsm.opt file. It is in the bin directory, but
it appears to have a setting that has the dsm.sys as the options file.

Any suggestions as to where this is set?

Exchange Mailbox restores

2000-10-02 Thread Palmadesso Jack

We recently moved to exchange and have implemented the TDP for Exchange. It
works fine but managment is concerened of the fact that we cannot do
individual mailbox restores like we were able to do in Notes. I am aware
that there is no Microsoft API that allows this (or am I wrong). I've read
about some of you that are using products that allow mailbox restores under
Exchange but most of what I have read has been negative. i.e.- Its slow, It
uses a non MS method, Its unreliable, all of the above, etc,etc

My questions are:

Is there anything new available from Tivoli or another vendor that
will allow exchange mailbox restores?

What are your opinions of these products?

Anybody using Legato with this capability?

What do you think of it?

I would really appreciate any input from anyone

Restoring file permissions

2000-08-15 Thread Palmadesso Jack

This is probably a dumb question but here goes.

Every couple of months somebody with too much admin priviledge will whack
permissions on an NT server someplace. Today somebody whacked a whole drive
and set everything to read only. I was asked if it was possible to restore
just the file permissions instead of the whole file. Is something like this
possible? I already told the administrator that he'll have to restore all
of the files but I thought it was an interesting request and would be a nice
feature.

Thanks for any help,

Server to Server reclamaiton vs move data

2000-08-01 Thread Palmadesso Jack

Boy sure is quiet in here lately. Maybe this can stir things up a bit ;)

Correct me if I am wrong:

I have 2 servers at remote sites that perform server to server db backups
and copy storage pools over our WAN. Reclamation usually takes a really
long time to complete. Especailly as I approach lower reclamation values.
If I set reclamation for the server to server pool at 80 then I have to send
at most 20% of each tape down over the WAN. DLT 4000s have 20/40
compression so I could send up to 5/10 gigs of data down the pipe for just
for one volume!! That could take all day over the WAN!

I am considering using "move data" instead. Again correct me if I am wrong
please.

When I issue a move data on a server to server volume that volume should be
mounted in the remote library as well as another filling volume from that
storage pool or just use a new scratch volume. Since these two volumes are
mounted in the same library the amount of data that needs to be sent over
the WAN is now minimal (I'm not sure about this) In this case the data
would be moved much quicker freeing up my scratch volumes. Also
communication over the WAN is now minimized because no files are being sent
only ADSM DB communication is going on. I know I would need at least 2
mount points available to the storage pool. Can anybody enlighten me on
this.

Thanks for any help as always,

Jack

Re: Recommended ADSM hardware

2000-07-28 Thread Palmadesso Jack

If you need to reuse your DLTs then Breece Hill makes a good little library.
I am using 2 Q47s with 3 DLT4000 drives and am deploying 4 more q 47s with
DLT8000 drives. Each holds 60 tapes in a rotating carasel. ADSM supports
it with the SCSI library drivers. They have been very reliable and their
support is good. Even the call is free. Onsite service is expensive but
who isn't and they hardly break anyway. I know the 2 that are currently
deployed have been in place for almost 5 years. I believe Breece Hills can
still be ordered with the older DLT hardware.
