Yes, it works. The open space district field workers use it all

The best skunk on dog remedy is a blend of hydrogen peroxide (the strongest you
can get at the drugsore) and baking soda. Mixed on the dog. Chemically
denatures the stink.
I think for poison ivy/oak, a mental treatment may be more effective. Weed is
legal in Illinois now, right?

Re: [AFMUG] This is what I had for lunch and you didn't

2019-08-06 Thread Ken Hohhof
FYI, the people on the Internet who say hot water, almost hot enough to burn,
will make the itching go away for a few hours. Feels like getting tazed while
you’re doing it, and may actually not be a smart thing to do, but it can keep
you from scratching it, temporarily.

Supposedly it is an allergic reaction, so maybe some people are more sensitive
than others. Also supposedly subsequent bouts will hit faster. That’s part of
the problem, unless you know how to recognize the plant, you may not know you
got into it for a day or so. Then unlike a bug bite, it gets worse and worse
and worse.

Like they say, leaves of three, let it be. If you look at the photos on the
web, it’s pretty easy to recognize. The stuff I encountered is just like they
say, plants on the ground and vines growing up the north side of a tree.
Poison ivy / brush killer from the store killed it, but supposedly even dead it
has the urushiol, plus it will grow back, and if you burn it the smoke is
dangerous.

I used to get poison ivy every year when I was a kid in Illinois. One year when
I was around 9 or 10, my brother and I must have found a patch that gave us a
miserable case of it for at least a couple of weeks. I never got it again while
I lived in Illinois, or when we moved to Minnesota when I was a teenager.

Moved to California after college, and there is no poison ivy out here, but
poison oak. It's essentially the same stuff. A similar leaf, but a different
plant configuration. The same Urushiol oil. I'd lived in CA for about 8 years,
and never got the stuff.

I got into a motorcycle accident and the bike went plowing through a giant
patch of PO (short name for poison oak). I tore off my leather jacket and
headed down the hill after the bike. Meanwhile, my girlfriend at the time (now
my wife, bless her heart) tells me "Don't go through there it's all PO!" I
ignore her, and shout back "I don't get that stuff."

Well, I had ruptured my spleen. Many hours later, I went under the knife to get
that taken care of. The next morning, I had several little round patches of PO
wherever they had stuck a monitor patch of any kind. They gave me a tube of
cortisone to take care of it. It did not get "bad", but I still got it.

I've had occasional bouts with it over the years. As long as I'm reasonably
careful, and wash it off within an hour or two, it almost never amounts to
anything. I don't get a giant rash or anything; just a little redness that goes
away in a day or so & no "big itch".

That said, for people who are sensitive, it can be really nasty.

Once upon a time, before HIPPA, I was at the Drs office.

A nurse was on the phone with a new bride. She been camping and her groom went
outside to see a man about a horse. Somehow he got poison ivy on his hands,
his unit and shortly thereafter inside his new wife...

She was not happy, I could clearly hear both sides of the conversation
including the things she was saying to her husband.

The nurse was in tears suppressing her laughter.

It still makes me smile when I think about it. Poor girl.

I put on white Tyvek and HD nitrile gloves to clear a patch of
poison oak behind the water tanks the other day. It was only about
80 or 85, but I was dying out there. When I pulled the gloves off,
it seemed like there was a pint of water in each one.

I think it’s unusual to have a multi-week blackout of CBS, NBC, ABC or Fox.

And the AT&T UVerse service was already way too expensive, the channel lineup
was padded with almost entirely crap channels, and the Internet was
ridiculously slow for the price. Even their phone service is way overpriced.

Maybe people with satellite TV have only DISH as an alternative. Or they could
get off their lazy ass and wire up an old fashioned antenna and use streaming
for the rest. In my case I have 2 cable providers to switch to, and I’m going
on my third or fourth week of seeing that annoying screen about poor, poor AT&T
being the victim because CBS wants to charge more, and telling me to use
Locast. Sorry, AT&T finally overcame my inertia. Every month I can’t believe
how much I pay them for how little I get, the CBS thing is the straw that broke
the camel’s back.

This is like Arbys having a dispute with their supplier of little packets of
Arbys and Horsey Sauce, so they give you a sad note instead of sauce, with
suggestions of other places you could go for sauce. You didn’t really like
Arbys anyway, so you just stop going there. I mean, you’d better be pretty
confident in your customer loyalty or lack of competition to piss off your
customers over a few pennies. Unless your margins are really that thing, which
I assure you, is not the case with AT&T.

AT&T is telling UVerse and DirecTV customers to use Locast (which they help
fund) because of their retransmission fee dispute with CBS.

I have AT&T at my house (I don’t live in my own service area), and my response
is to switch providers. IMHO, AT&T is already charging me twice what they
should, and now they can’t even deliver one of the 4 major networks? This is
not my problem to fix, AT&T, for what I pay it is yours to fix. I am either
going to switch my Internet to Wide Open West cable and use an OTA antenna for
TV, or just go ahead and get the middle TV package from Wowway. In either case,
I cut my costs in half or more, I get faster Internet, and I get CBS without
some streaming workaround.

I think AT&T will lose a bunch of customers over this. It’s not like they have
great service or prices or Internet speeds to begin with, and their channel
lineup is mostly crap.

Of course, AT&T has not reduced the $8 broadcast TV charge, and will probably
increase it whenever they settle with CBS. I’d have to check if they also
charge a sports recovery fee. And of course there’s the hardware fee, HD fee,
DVR fee, etc. I think the Wowway broadcast fee is actually $10. I’m not sure
why AT&T doesn’t just settle and raise the broadcast fee, since it’s a phony
fee anyway and they can raise it anytime. But charging me for CBS and then
telling me to stream CBS via Locast is just wrong.

Arbys needs to add a “sauce recovery fee” to their bills. On top of the
advertised price. And whether you use the sauce or not. I mean, what is
Horsey Sauce? Horses? OK, I know, it’s horseradish sauce. The real question
is what’s in the meat. Again I ask, horses? We’ve got the meats!

As a non pilot, I learned something today from the Internet. Airports
sometimes have to renumber runways when the local magnetic field changes.

Those numbers are the compass bearing to the nearest 10 degrees. So runway 22R
would be oriented at 220 degrees, the R designating the right runway of a pair
of parallel runways.

I was thinking that would a way to number AP sectors, instead of what we do
now, which is clockwise starting at AP1 being north. We could have AP0, 9, 18
and 27. Or 0, 6, 12, 18, 24 and 30. But then if the magnetic field of the
earth shifted, we’d have to renumber.

Re: [AFMUG] residential customers that alway claiming "business use"

2019-08-06 Thread Mike Hammett
I assume people do 24/7 phone support because it's easy and cheap enough to do.

I did mean residential truck rolls. It doesn't cost much different to have
someone work 2 - 10 as it does for someone to work 9 - 5. Then you can provide
service when people are actually home.

Businesses that are only open when most people are unable to interact with said
business (because they're at work) annoy me.

Yes, exactly.

I should note that probably 80+ percent of calls are resolved over the phone

replacement POE or router via UPS which gets there next day. Assuming the
customer didn’t wait until 5pm to call in, since we have to drop things off for
UPS by 6pm. And sometimes there are workarounds, like forcing the SM-router
link to 10BaseT because a surge suppressor got degraded in a lightning storm
and is causing CRC errors.

The other thing I tell people is that if Internet access is “mission critical”,
everyone – businesses included – should have a backup. Even fiber and cable
Internet have outages. If you’re losing millions every hour, you need to have
at least a mobile hotspot or a DSL line for backup. And seriously, who doesn’t
have a smartphone with a data plan. If a business has an onsite VoIP PBX from
us, we offer to set it up with out SIP trunk provider to fail over to a
cellphone if the PBX becomes unavailable.

We used to offer all broadband customers a free dialup account for backup, but
of course that’s useless now, people would rather drive into town and use the
WiFi at Starbucks or Panera. And BTW we got out of the dialup business 10 years
ago.

the customer and having them page out a service tech.

For DIA we page and escalate after hours and get a tech out of bed if we have
to.

For SMB we try, i.e if someone is available and willing then we dispatch and
pay the overtime. They aren't going to be offline over the weekend but they
also won't get a 2AM service call like DIA.

For residential it gets fit into the next business days schedule.

I have AT&T at my house (I don’t live in my own service area), and my response

not my problem to fix, AT&T, for what I pay it is yours to fix. I am either

I cut my costs in half or more, I get faster Internet, and I get CBS without

I think AT&T will lose a bunch of customers over this. It’s not like they have

Business class customers get priority treatment on our network. Price is $20 a
month more.
If we have eight service calls and one of them is the business, the business is
bumped up to the top of the queue.

how they can claim they are not aereo in a non profit wrapper. I hope they can
