Adam,
GPON is 1310/1490. There are definitely ways to overlay DWDM. We
overlay 1550 RF video over our GPON and it's probably a way wider
signal than DWDM would be.

everyone there has already had it?

How can a county of 2.6 million have 300 cases a day but a county of
110,000 has 34-50 new cases a day?

Fujikura 40 S, used to be a ton of money, you can get one used sub $1500, good
quality if you don’t want a cheap Chinese unit. The convenience alone will
probably make you happier than you were before.

I have had pretty good luck with my Inno splicers. The ribbon splicer seems to
have more loss than expected.

We tried the Speedwolf from Amazon and it was awful. We wasted days/weeks
trying to figure out our problems. Tons of people have had good luck with
various $1000 ones, but not us.

We won't spend the money on a $1000 splicer from Amazon when we can spend $3000
for a Sumitomo. Not only does it work more reliably, having the pucks make
work so much easier.

There really isn't a reason to not have a splicer in your tools set if you
work with fiber to any extent. You can still farm out the work or use pre-made
cables, but at least you have the option of doing it yourself. The option value
alone is worth the up front cost.

Re: [AFMUG] Who is going to WISPAMERICA?

2021-04-05 Thread Forrest Christian (List Account)
Here's the deal:

Without the vaccine, if you come in contact with the virus in a high enough
dose to catch it, you're almost certain to catch it.

If you catch it and have high-risk medical conditions, you have an
unreasonable chance of ending up dead.

Even if you don't end up dead, there is a very good chance that you'll have
long-term damage as a result of the virus. Heart problems. Lung
Problems. Brain function problems.

Vaccinations reduce the chance of catching COVID to something like 10% for
Pfizer.

Plus, if you do catch it, the severity of the disease is much reduced.
All of the vaccines are almost 100% effective at preventing
hospitalizations and death.

This means that with the vaccine, we're more in the statistical range (or
less) of dying or having long-term effects from the Flu. I'm willing to
take that chance.

The only wildcard here is the variants, and if we'll squash this before
there is a nasty variant that pops up which gets around the vaccine.

As was mentioned elsewhere in this this thread, let’s not start down this path.
I don’t think links like this are helpful and this is going to end up in a
political discussion (again).

If you want to go to WiSPAmerica, go. If you don’t want to go, don’t go. No
need to debate or tell anyone why. 

There is a lot of false reporting by fearmongers in the extremes on both sides
of the situation.

If it gives me a chance not to die from Covid and lessen the symptoms if I do
get it, I will take it. Thats what these vaccines are supposed to do. Pfizer
and Moderna are supposed to be like 80% effective 2 weeks after first
vaccination. I am getting my second vaccination for Moderna in about a week or
so and the process to get it was simple and well organized. I think the biggest
problem is false reporting of possible cases being touted as positive cases.

2021-04-05 Thread Robert Andrews
The important part of that is that they are testing positive with minor
symptoms, unless you have some hard reports of more severe cases? But
minor symptoms can still make you contagious to someone who isn't
immunized or if both aren't masked.

We had basically decided a while ago to not do any business

we didn't make any plans. Part of what we were waiting for was
for either cases to settle down a lot more than they are even

I was more comfortable in attending.
As it turns out, it probably would have been ok for us to go as
both Debbie and I will be fully immunized a couple of weeks
before the show. But, unfortunately, as a vendor it's not
really possible to get everything together that quickly to
attend.Plus we have some internal projects in progress we
would have to put on hold which can't really be put on hold at
this point. So we're going to have to miss this one.
Assuming everything continues trending in the right direction,
we'll be in vegas. We also have a show in I think August that
we're planning on attending.

WA historically has been the "engineering" show.
Deeper dives. An "Animal Farm" track (vendors doing
their deep dives like the old and much cherished
Animal Farm shows). Turn-out is always smaller
because there are less business/accounting/HR focused
tracks.

Obviously the circumstances could be better - but WA

When I got my shots there were hundreds of people at the vaccination
site, and it's 10-14 days after the second shot that you have maximum
effect.  So I've definitely wondered how many people end up getting
infected at the vaccination site.

Re: [AFMUG] Who is going to WISPAMERICA?

I am not going to the show this year. Texas politics and lax attitude
towards a pandemic and other issues is a big concern.

 Sam,

I'll be there. I think turn-out will be pretty good all things
considering... but probably 2017-2018 type attendance levels than what
WISPA was projecting for WISPAmerica 2020 before it was canceled.

WA historically has been the "engineering" show. Deeper dives. An
"Animal Farm" track (vendors doing their deep dives like the old and much
cherished Animal Farm shows). Turn-out is always smaller because there are
 less business/accounting/HR focused tracks.

Obviously the circumstances could be better - but WA has a very
different feel than WISPAPALOOZA. I love both shows (and I'm not just
 saying that).

Just wondering if during these unprecedented times if there will be a
crowd or a ghost town in Grapevine TX.
I've been to the LV WISPaPalooza shows a couple of times, is this any
more informative and better organized or??

Re: [AFMUG] Osprey on towers

2021-04-05 Thread James Howard
I was out chatting with the farmer at one of our tower sites on a grain leg
about a week ago and he told me that he had a pair of Ospreys build a nest on
the top of the leg last year. He said he called a friend of his at the DNR and
talked to him about it. The DNR guy said that if there are no eggs he was fine
to tear it down but if there are eggs he needed to wait till they hatched and
left before tearing it down. He had his nephew climb up and there was an egg
but the egg had a hole in it so they took pictures and sent to the DNR. The
DNR said that the birds often puncture their own eggs trying to move them
around in the nest but since that was the only egg in the nest he was fine to
take the whole nest down. He said he threw it all off and put an orange cone
up there which has kept them off so far. As mentioned earlier, there are
federal and state regulations so your mileage may vary depending on how your
state (or possibly even who you talk to at the state).

I wouldn't want it coming after me even if I were on the ground let alone a
ladder! Most birds will defend their nest. Get an outdoor speaker, mount it
as close as you can get it to the nest and play a looped recording of a yapping
chihuahua. Birds don't stay around where they can't listen and talk to each
other, even anti-social ones like raptors I think wouldn't like it. These are
a world-wide species, why is it protected?

state DNR but no response yesterday and today being a gov holiday I don't
expect a response until next week. Kinda freaking out here. I need to mount a
few PTP links. I was planning on a climb today, but am holding off to hear
definitively. This is the main tower for my WISP.

Google kung-fu led me to a NATE presentation that says that climbing can be
done with precautions. Talked to the tower owner (a small private owner, not
one of the big three) who suggested adding a ring below the platform with the
nest for the new PTPs. Can this be done with the birds on the tower?

Has anyone dealt with Ospreys before?

I'd rather have huge terminals though =\ so much easier to just deal
with bare wire that gets screwed in.

I have done something similar to Gino on the LTE deployments where
Telrad used a 4-wire connector.  I.E.: Use a surge suppressor or other
connection point to transition from 4 wires to 2 wires.  You do have to
up-size the two wires appropriately.

I can't speak for Cambium as to why they chose a 4-wire connectorbut
use a DC wire size calculator and consider the more extreme cases with a
tower deployment.  4-wire lets you reduce the wire size two steps
compared to 2-wire. So 10ga becomes 14ga, etc.  I'd guess they were
trying to avoid putting huge terminals on the radio head.

Fiber, I'm using fiber from Benton Cook at CTI.  Lanshack also sells
pre-terminated outdoor micro armored.

Power -- is a pain in the backside.   Talk to Benton at CTI... he's got
some cheaper Belden cable... but seriously, Cambium needs to do away
with the 4 wire.

You will need to buy special glands for the fiber (PG-13 or
something is
the part number).

Re: [AFMUG] Splicer purchase

2021-04-05 Thread Josh Luthman
We tried the Speedwolf from Amazon and it was awful. We wasted days/weeks
trying to figure out our problems. Tons of people have had good luck with
various $1000 ones, but not us.

We won't spend the money on a $1000 splicer from Amazon when we can spend
$3000 for a Sumitomo. Not only does it work more reliably, having the
pucks make work so much easier.

Thanks!

Re: [AFMUG] Splicer purchase

2021-04-05 Thread fiberrun
If you are only doing short haul stuff or drops then you can just get one of
those el cheapo Chinese splicers with all included for less than a grand.

There really isn't a reason to not have a splicer in your tools set if you work
with fiber to any extent. You can still farm out the work or use pre-made
cables, but at least you have the option of doing it yourself. The option value
alone is worth the up front cost.

Since fusion splicers arent 5 figures anymore, how close to becoming a standard
shop tool are these.

Depending on circumstances we will pay 20 to 70 per splice. In it's own,
relatively cheap, but then theres setup fees, trip charge, etc.

I'm at a point where I dont see the process being much more tech savvy than an
rj45 with as dummy proof as splicers are now. Probably actually less inclined
for error with the machines doing all the work.

We bought 8 licences links, none of the premade cables were spot on, 2 were
short.

I'm just looking for any reason not to get one, but I really dont see why
splicing isnt something we arent doing in house.
