Ah. Got it. I kind of figured the hardware was somewhat generic since they
are running a Linux kernel underneath.

Been looking at these guys. Never used them but pricing seems competitive.

On the L3 side, they don't have DHCP relay or IPv6 features. They are "roadmap"
items they claim "should" be out by the end of the year. Those are a deal
breaker for us but YMMV. It's definitely a switch/edge device and not targeted
at core routing.

One thing I really like is the smaller form (<14" deep) and dual -48VDC input.
They have AC and 24VDC as well.

We have had very good luck with Juniper switches in unfriendly environments
(our tower sites). There are something on the order of 75 in use at tower sites
and I don’t recall any failures.

Same with the Ciena gear - a good portion of our sites have both Juniper and
Ciena equipment. Very reliable.

We are actually starting to move away from Ciena as we implement MPLS and find
we can do that in the Juniper gear and eliminate an extra piece of equipment.

MPLS isn't very feature rich on EX. There are lots of "gotchas." I
believe EX4600 is "better," but I think most people would use QFX or ACX.

Interesting. Appreciate the feedback. We haven’t used any of their gear.
Most of our switching is various Juniper flavors backed by MX routers.

Anything in particular on the Telco Systems side that warrants the warning?
Bad support? Bad hardware? Bad software? Full of crap! 

One thing I really like is the smaller form (<14" deep) and dual -48VDC input.
They have AC and 24VDC as well.

This depends highly on what your looking for. If you are looking for
something to use in a datacenter/office that is environmentally friendly
then most of the juniper/cisco/brocade solutions will work another good
one is dell.

If you want to retain something that wont die when the temperature gets
high or loose fans in a dusty environment. If you only need basic L2
then I would recommend the ciena 3928 they are pretty cost efficient
with basic L2 license If you need more 10G ports there is the 5160.  If
you are wanting IP features then I would go with Nokia 7210 MXP or for
high capacity 10G and 100G 7250 IXR. I know most people would think they
are crazy expensive, but they are less expensive than cisco with better
features. They can go crazy on the support contracts if you get the full
featured management platform NSP, but at the lowest level which would be
most people its not to bad.

Re: [AFMUG] Good Switches

2020-07-01 Thread Charles Boening
Been looking at these guys. Never used them but pricing seems competitive.

On the L3 side, they don't have DHCP relay or IPv6 features. They are
"roadmap" items they claim "should" be out by the end of the year. Those are a
deal breaker for us but YMMV. It's definitely a switch/edge device and not
targeted at core routing.

One thing I really like is the smaller form (<14" deep) and dual -48VDC input.
They have AC and 24VDC as well.

So who's your preferred vendor for carrier switches?

Suppose you want to break away from buggy Latvian switches, who would
you look at today?

Ciena? Adtran? Cisco? Juniper?

Re: [AFMUG] Good Switches

2020-07-01 Thread Peter Kranz via AF
Complex question.. Linux controls the behavior of the switch, but the actual
switching is done via merchant silicon like Jericho2, Trident, etc.
depending on the switch, so Linux is not actually doing the switching or
routing.

All the good switches are made in Taiwan.

All the bad switches are also made in Taiwan.

Planet is definitely in one of those categories.

I'm assuming Juniper has software for central management? I poo-poo'd

Yeah - the L2 VLAN config on CRS has been frustrating to say the least. I
haven't even tried this "new" method on the CRS317, but it's on my list
soon.

Juniper EX JunOS syntax across models is more or less the same. There are
some minor differences when you get into EX4600 since it uses ELS (enhanced
L2 software) software.

If you know the state they're all in already, and you know the same
command will work on all of them, then I can see how that would work.
I'm working towards that too because the Mikrotiks won't go away.

Re: [AFMUG] Good Switches

2020-06-30 Thread Adam Moffett
Well the CRS 3xx line is actually their best so far.  I've noted at
least 4 ways to set up VLAN's on a Mikrotik and in any given scenario 3
of them are wrong.  On the 3xx use Bridge->VLAN and enable VLAN
filtering on your bridge interface.  That is the only platform where the
bridge VLAN filtering gets hardware acceleration, and if you did that on
any other model you'd be dependent on the CPU.  For CRS 1xx and 2xx you
use Switch->VLAN menu which has different options and capabilities.  For
CCR or any of the other router products you can use bridge->VLAN
filtering, but there's still an older method under Interface->VLAN which
also works and you can either add VLAN interfaces to a bridge, or bridge
the VLAN interfaces together. All of these methods are "right" in the
right scenario, and 3 out of the 4 are always wrong.

A stack of those CRS317's was an alternate suggestion made here. Four of
those would cost 1/10th what we'd spend on an EX4600, but I'm kind of
sick of that whole scene.

If you're in Juniper world and you have two different models, how much
different is the command syntax to do the same jobs?

I'm actually looking for something similar.. I have a few of the

really just need 4-6 SFP+ interfaces for this particular application.

The Cisco Nexus 3064 is another cheap/old option, but seems to work
fine for L2 access (servers, etc).

I just eyeballed the Juniper EX4600.  Wondering if I can stack
chassis using the 40gig ports.

I'm assuming Juniper has software for central management?  I
