[AFMUG] Strict NAT message on Xbox One?

Anyone had this issue? The customer is behind a ubiquiti running NAT with the
ubiquiti using a public IP behind one of our Mikrotik's. The Mikrotik does not
have any ports blocked, either. Any ideas?

Re: [AFMUG] Contacts for fiber - Windstream, US Signal, Zayo

2016-05-06 Thread Jon Auer
When we started working with US Signal I just filled out the contact form
on their web site and waited a couple days. That got me in touch with a
local sales rep who's been pretty reasonable (we're in a different
territory or I'd send you his info).

Re: other comments, I've found their VES service to be pricy but aside from
that they were able to get us connected to random things in AT land where
no one was willing to work with us: Example: "here's a AT LOA/CFA. Yes,
one end is in a CO where you have colo. Please just order it." and they
did.
Their pricing on waves between truly on-net buildings (where they own/lease
dark fiber) has been unbeatable. I've tried national aggregators and they
seem to come in with prices a few points higher than I can get directly
from regional transport providers, but this is mostly minimum 1G circuits
at a minimum. Maybe it's different in the 10-100M bracket.

I had really bad problems with us signal I had to cancel away from them after
week or so after getting it installed. Plus there pricing is high for
100/100meg service and with windstream I got an quote for $800 for 100/100 but
you have to find somebody to get to you like last mile like twc. Zayo that is
an joke they wouldnt even talk to me for bandwidth since I am not in there area
but they do go through lima peering with CNI.

Is that a HV module? Would a non-HV module prevent GigE negotiation but still
allow the radio to power up and run at 100Mb?

We have historically had lower clamp voltages and more greater sensitivity to
surges and impulses than our competitors. That gives the equipment greater
protection but it also causes problems when there is high noise or ground
loops. One of the first support calls I ever got was from a guy trying to
install one of our outdoor surge protectors in an attic and tying the ground to
the ground wire in a nearby romex cable.

Got them to put the thing outside the house and ground it to the house ground
and it actually started working.

But the surge suppressor itself could have issues too. Once in a while one
gets through our process with a problem.

One possible difference is that your changing the impedance of the ground path.
Try using the same wire to connect to ground and ground out the surge module…
you may find that the issue is low impedance causing a ground loop to travel
your cable.

In that event the solution is to give the current a lower impedance path that
isn’t through your cable or at least only on the shield of your cable.

I use shielded patch panels before my surge modules and that creates a drain
for the shield that has lower impedance (generally) then other paths.

Ideally you would run a ground cable up your tower for all of your equipment
that is large enough wire to be the best path to ground.

Remember that this isn’t just about shorting grounds to the earth ground but
you also have ground currents and static electricity created by wind etc that
causes stray electricity that can interfere with your systems.

True.

But I still need all that to tranceive to GigE anyways, right?

I don’t think they have an active Ethernet SFP capable module on the market

99.99 percent of my installs are switching from fiber to Cat5e at the side of

What I really want is a good all-inclusive standard GigE SFP NID/ONT with a 1.5
inch opening for our conduit and another ¾ opening for flex tube for the home
Cat5e that is never outdoor rated.

Companies are so backwards to think in this day and age they can keep their

They still haven’t told me pricing.

One possible difference is that your changing the impedance of the ground
path. Try using the same wire to connect to ground and ground out the surge
module… you may find that the issue is low impedance causing a ground loop to
travel your cable.

In that event the solution is to give the current a lower impedance path that
isn’t through your cable or at least only on the shield of your cable.

I use shielded patch panels before my surge modules and that creates a drain
for the shield that has lower impedance (generally) then other paths.

If either of them gets it right for the right price (under $150) I will buy

True.

But I still need all that to tranceive to GigE anyways, right?

I don’t think they have an active Ethernet SFP capable module on the market
yet, but I think it’s coming?

99.99 percent of my installs are switching from fiber to Cat5e at the side of
the house.

I think the rep is waiting to see if I’m really interested.

We don’t do GPON yet, and my pricing for the entire NID/ONT at a full 1000FDX

pricing a secret to a large community.

They still haven’t told me pricing.

I think the rep is waiting to see if I’m really interested.

We don’t do GPON yet, and my pricing for the entire NID/ONT at a full 1000FDX
made the rep do a double take.

We use a Mikrotik RB260GS. Less than $40 shipped. Less than $10 for SFP module.
The entire cost of parts, NID, splice tray and ONT w/POE is less than $150.

2016-05-06 Thread Sterling Jacobson
Uh oh, you shared a ballpark price, lol!

Companies are so backwards to think in this day and age they can keep their
pricing a secret to a large community.

They still haven’t told me pricing.

I think the rep is waiting to see if I’m really interested.

We don’t do GPON yet, and my pricing for the entire NID/ONT at a full 1000FDX
made the rep do a double take.

I have 3 OneSim phones that I bought last time I went over there. Not sure
how the data rates are but I could ship them to you if it helps. My son has
been over there since January. He just broke up with his girl friend and

Anyway, I can ask him what he does if you want. In total he has spent about
18 months over there in the last couple of years.

Re: [AFMUG] Mobile Data + Wifi in Europe

2016-05-06 Thread Sean Heskett
Europe is tricky because as soon as you cross a border you are in a
different country and roaming fees etc. apply. Even Europeans have
problems, we went snowboarding with my friend from France and as soon as we
got to Switzerland we had to turn off pandora...1st world problems for
sure. last time i was over there i just went to Starbucks and used their
wifi...the rest of the time i enjoyed the silence and figured if the office
called i'd just pay the piper.

if you were going to be in just one country then you could do the SIM card
for that country but once you go to the next country you need a new card.
kinda made me appreciate the no roaming here in america ;-)

We use Altech Corp CBI243A:

We're in a cool climate and the box is in a shaded area so we haven't
put vent/fans in (yet). Probably a good idea to do so just to be
safe.

Re: [AFMUG] Gigabit Ethernet on Cambium 450i only running 100Mbps

2016-05-06 Thread chuck
I will run it through its paces once I get it back.

If you are using RADIUS, their is a way to reboot SM without logging into AP.

We do support Packet of Disconnect from 13.4.1 onwards.
How to use is explained here:

http://community.cambiumnetworks.com/t5/PMP-Configuration-Examples/PMP-13-4-Radius-Change-of-Authorization-Feature-Brief/m-p/39955#M203

Alternatively, you can also use snmp proxy way as well. AP will proxy reboot

even. Reboot AP and it comes back but still no access. SM will not

Re: [AFMUG] Mobile Data + Wifi in Europe

2016-05-06 Thread Cassidy B. Larson
I have TMobile here at home and usually go to Europe for a month each year.
TMob gives its users free roaming with free 2G data and free texts
internationally (for most popular destinations). I can pay extra for 3G data
speeds if I want, but the 2G speeds are fine for me with Maps, and email
checkings on the go. Prior to this option from TMobile I would get a sim card
in each country I visited and load it up with $20 or so. That got expensive and
annoying fast, and if you didn’t get an “in-country” sim card you’d be roaming
and thus eat through your balance quicker. That’s why the Tmobile option is
great for me, I get to keep my number and go wherever I want. I believe it’s
20c/min for calls, but I normally just skype/facetime once I’m back at the
hotel/BnB and using Wifi for free.
