You run it as a VM on your platform of choice, though mine is VMWare. It auto
sets up the whole environment, OS and all.

It's very easy to install, comes as an OVA built on Ubuntu 14.04.

It has a nice TUI for the console to do things like changing IPs, console
password, etc.

The web UI has an 8 - 16 character password requirement. #shittypasswords

That said, I'll use whatever distro the guide I'm reading is based on. I don't

The ePMP 2000's that we just got came with RC firmware, but that I
don't have a problem with since it's a new product and they obviously

For that matter, the whole “release candidate” designation is

Same here, we always update to the current stable firmware and
load a template on every radio before it leaves the office. It's
odd they're shipping these with an RC though... one of our guys
asked me yesterday if he needed to update one to 2.6.2 since it
was already 2.6.2RC.

Re: [AFMUG] Scary thing to see on a UPS

The higher the temp, the lower the voltage.
At 120 F it would be about 13 volts.
At –20F it would need to be about 15 volts.

Easier to overcharge when hot. Harder to fully charge when cold.
Sucks for electric cars.

The batteries should be fine though, if they are sealed AGM?

All of my batteries lie underneath the cabinets in the non-climate controlled

something according to temperature of the batteries.

Yeah, early on we had UV protection issues, sticker material type issues and
thermoformed plastic.
We later went to injection molded plastic, different stickers, different UV
protection, weep holes etc etc.

You gotta remember that was 13 years ago when we started the project. Lots
of changes along the way.

I would have to gather them up and count them. My suspicion was there
wouldn't be any interest, even just for the cost of shipping.

As far as performance, they performed as advertised, which isn't much. I
think it was something like 6 dB gain. Compact but very heavy. CLIP works
better.

Sorry Chuck, we got away from the Stingers because they didn't stand up well
to the weather. Performance would decline after a few years, maybe the
metalized tape inside was deteriorating? Superstingers tended to fill with
water, although the redesign helped with that. And the plastic got ugly so
we didn't want to redeploy used Stingers at new installs. We still have
some 2.4 Stingers in use, but not for long, since we are gradually replacing
2.4 with 3.65.

The LENSes got a bit ugly after a few years also, but you only noticed up
close, and I think they are basically a solid block of ceramic so it was
only cosmetic. They look like they were sandblasted, or like the glossy
finish wore off exposing a ceramic interior.

Re: [AFMUG] RB750p for small sites

2016-07-08 Thread Glen Waldrop
The “enable long cable” command turns off the safety mechanism for the rest of
the POE out ports. If there is a short they will not automatically power down.

The only real problem I’ve run into is feeding the Powerbeam M5. If the device
is plugged into the 750 or Powerbox it powers on no problem. If the
750/powerbox reboots the Powerbeam isn’t automatically detected and powered on.
I have to force that port to power on. I’ve had this on three different sites,
every Powerbeam to Powerbox I’ve had on a tower.

Once set to forced on I’ve had no issues at all.

I’ve got quite a few of these in the field.

I’m going through the rest of the emails on the list to see if there are any
questions I can answer.

The PowerBOX version comes with a 2.5A power supply, and PoE adapter /

2016-07-08 Thread Ken Hohhof
Seems like a questionable practice shipping product with beta firmware, unless
the product itself is still in beta.

For that matter, the whole “release candidate” designation is confusing. Is
that like “presumptive nominee”? It’s either released, or it’s beta.

Same here, we always update to the current stable firmware and load a template
on every radio before it leaves the office. It's odd they're shipping these
with an RC though... one of our guys asked me yesterday if he needed to update
one to 2.6.2 since it was already 2.6.2RC.

Re: [AFMUG] Door to Door sales

2016-07-08 Thread Jeremy
We get very little response from door hangers. Door-to-door guys who can
actually sell usually have a much higher take rate if they speak with the
customer. I think we get calls from about 1 in 200 on door hangers.

2016-07-08 Thread That One Guy /sarcasm
When I started here wi did something like this, generated a ton of
customers. We did door hangars, ideally customers werent home to avoid the
long talk, less door hangars hung. The guy doing it went to the target
areas with a mast and a radio and tested signal quickly, he was supposed to
write the signal on the door hangar and leave it (basically said hey! we
can get you the interwebs, we already tested, just call us, we will install
if for free)

I think he got 25 bucks per take and the installer was getting bonuses too.

The problem ended up toward the end when the door to door guy just went
through all the door hangars and put a good signal on them and hung them on
every door, generated a ton of NLOS truck rolls (I went on one that was a
single story house buried deep down in the woods, door hangar said -64 on
2.4 ghz... nope)

I dont know what his spiel was to the customers, but he was a natural
talker who was likeable.

The biggest benefit was the "guarantee" because we already tested it

Does anyone still use these?

We switched to CLIPs a few years back, and I have a bin or two full of
LENSes that I'm wondering if I should post here on a Friday or just throw
them in the dumpster.

Post them for sale, and see what happens.

Personally, I don't think they worked all that well...
