[AFMUG] site monitor autocycle

2016-12-19 Thread TJ Trout
I know the site monitor can autocycle devices connected via POE, can you
make the onboard relay on the base1/2 cycle by using ind 0, slot 0, pos 0?

I need to cycle a external poe switch

Re: [AFMUG] site monitor autocycle

2016-12-19 Thread George Skorup
Slot 0 and pos 0 for the relay in the base itself is correct. For the
Base-II, "Cycle procedure" is the polarity of the 'value' column for
that slot/pos. To toggle the base relay, reverse it, 1 and then 0.
Because the normally closed position on that relay = 0. Simply click on
the edit icon (pencil) and put 1 in the popup box and it reverses it.

The Base-I is similar, just different naming and obviously you have to
use the SiteMonitor Manager Windows app.

[AFMUG] 450 AP dropping Ethernet in cold weather

2016-12-19 Thread Kurt Fankhauser
I have a 3.65ghz 450 AP that was running flawless for over 6 months until
we got our first really cold spell last week, temps dropped to near 0
degrees a couple nights back to back and when I woke up one morning the AP
was dropping offline. Logged into the Mikrotik 2011 and it showed Ethernet
was flapping. (was originally going through a Sync Injector). I had an old
FSK AP going through the same sync injector and wasn't showing any
problems. I tried switching the ports on the sync injector, changed ports
on RB2011, eliminated sync injector and used a standard Canopy SM power
supply. Finally I even switched the known good Ethernet cable from the FSK
AP to the 450 and the port is still flapping. Won't lock to 10-baseT
either. I am thinking at this point that I am going to have to replace the
AP.

2016-12-19 Thread Bill Prince
I had a situation like this with a Dragonwave backhaul a few years ago.
Every time the OAT dropped below ~~ 25° it would drop offline. I found I
could get it to "live" by wrapping the ODU in foam insulation. Helped me
isolate the problem, and was able to schedule an ODU replacement.

Re: [AFMUG] 450 AP dropping Ethernet in cold weather

2016-12-19 Thread Ken Hohhof
Have you checked the AP log to make sure it isn’t doing watchdog resets or
something? There have been a couple temperature related problems on 450. One
was the ADI Communication Failure problem, AFAIK that was only SMs. Also
there’s the memory controller issue, I think that’s at high temperatures
though, just the same I would make sure you are at 14.1.2 or higher FW version.

Some people have reported water intrusion on 450 APs. I guess if it has water
in the bottom which froze, that could do bad things. You say that you swapped

Re: [AFMUG] T-Tommy Wheeler staying corrupt to the very end

2016-12-19 Thread Ken Hohhof
There’s AT&T and Verizon, which are focused on wireless as Faisal says.

Then there’s the remaining scraps of the old Bell System, which will do
whatever brings in government subsidies. (Centurylink, Frontier, etc.)

The mobile wireless model probably looks like the old ILEC model, where you
charged a base rate plus all sorts of additional charges for usage, long
distance, and software based features like voicemail, call waiting, etc. In
the mobile world it was voice minutes, then text messages, now it’s data plans
and overusage. I’m not quite sure why they keep pushing LTE based fixed
wireless, unless they intend to charge for usage on that also. The obvious
thing would be one family data plan for all your mobile devices plus your fixed
wireless at home, but that’s going to have to be unlimited or have a very high
data cap if competing with FTTH.

The FTTH model probably looks more like the cable TV model, where you sell a
bundle of Internet, phone and TV. Without TV, it looks a lot like a dumb pipe,
and the former Bell companies swore to never be the dumb pipe again. That’s
why you see AT&T and Verizon acquiring content companies. This goes back to
the dialup days, when Ma Bell saw all these startups like AOL offering service
over POTS service, and Ma Bell wasn’t getting a cut of the revenue.

While you may not care too much for this, but the CLEC's business / Wireline

Yes, I am simplifying this.a lot happen when WISP's were 'sleeping'...

Now, I cringe, to see what happens in the coming years, especially since the

If I was to describe what happened in the wireline world, it would be like...
The Republicans shot the small business isp/nsp/clec's in the back, and the

There was a issue with 450’s rebooting in cold weather that was addressed in
recent software versions. If you are not running current software I would
start looking at the release notes to figure out where you need to be.

The issue I believe was traced to a hard to locate instability in the internal
logic power supply when the CPU load changed that manifested only under low
temperatures. Cambium was able to reproduce it reliably in extreme cold
testing (like -40C) but it was still a very difficult item to track down.

Re: [AFMUG] 450 AP dropping Ethernet in cold weather

2016-12-19 Thread Ken Hohhof
My gut tells me I have far more of this port flapping problem on RB2011 than
any other Mikrotik platform, is it just me?

What happens if you pass it through a small Ethernet switch before the 2011? I
am considering replacing all my rackmount 2011 with 3011, unfortunately there
isn’t a desktop version. I’ve had good luck with RB850Gx2 but it only has 5
ports.

When we first started deploying 450 we had some port flapping problems, I think
related to sync over power. After some 450 firmware updates and replacing WB
surge protectors with GigE HV versions, I don’t think we see that anymore. I
do see it happen with the 2011 routers and other equipment like some Exalt
licensed radios and some AF5x radios. That’s why I’m suspicious of the 2011.
On the other hand, we could just have some cables with water in them at those
sites.

Long story….Short version is… . Bought out a major WISP player (ok, THE
major WISP player) – They paid shipping . 6 truckloads – in a lot – from FSK
to 8 ft. dishes almost a year ago. Had to take it all.

And, yep, we actually sell a fair amount to the 3rd world countries. Not very
often, but usually large qty

2016-12-19 Thread Faisal Imtiaz
Yes, Mike while this is a position one can choose to take, I would argue that
it is a position is at best one of 'short term' which would lead to self
destruction.

for many reasons:-

Telco's and ILEC's are working on a 20, 30 year out look, while you and I can
barely see beyond a year or so.
They are big enough to buy whom ever they want. So if you think that there is a
lot of competitive fiber available, check again, and you will see that the
amount of choices in the market place are shrinking due to acquisitions.

Just look at who Folks such as Centurylink has gobbled up in the last 5-10
years.
Look at the count of independent competitive providers by count 10 -15 years
ago vs today.

The larger they grow, the more in-significant we all become in the bigger
picture.

Yes, the FPGA memory controller problem. We had tons of issues with
that. But it didn't seem to do anything with the ethernet. Mostly sync
and registration issues. But if the memory contents are unstable, I
guess anything can happen. I remember telling Aaron we had the most
problems right after the sun went down and then sometimes just after the
sun came up. It has to be temperature related! Sure nuf.

13.2.1 and earlier has the broken FPGA image. OK, not broken, but not
able to handle the insanity. Use 14.1.2 or 14.2.1/15.0.1.

The issue I believe was traced to a hard to locate instability in the
internal logic power supply when the CPU load changed that manifested
only under low temperatures. Cambium was able to reproduce it
reliably in extreme cold testing (like -40C) but it was still a very
difficult item to track down.

Some people have reported water intrusion on 450 APs. I guess if it

The ILECs are focusing on fiber for several reasons:
1)Dramatic loss of land line only customers due to cell phones.
2)Loss of DSL customers to WISP due to long and poor copper.
3)It is a good way to put more rate of return investment dollars in the

2016-12-19 Thread Ken Hohhof
No doubt AT&T/SBC sought to sell products like Metro Ethernet and U-Verse that
they were not required to “share” (i.e. sell at wholesale prices) with CLECs.

I actually think Verizon embarked on their FiOS journey because of the long
term vision of one person – Ivan Seidenberg. Since his retirement, Verizon has
lost interest in fiber and is interested almost exclusively in wireless.

You could also debate the effect on the ILECs of Google Fiber. I learned
through years that big telcos are motivated by two things – fear and greed. So
fear of a competitor like Google Fiber would definitely provoke a response, if
only some symbolic fiber deployments to mark their territory.

While I realize that someone of you have an incredibly deep rooted 'hatred' for
folks from the other party, I would strongly suggest you go back 12/18 years
and see how the FCC has acted under different administrations.

While you may not care too much for this, but the CLEC's business / Wireline
business were decimated under then Republican FCC ...(WISP's were spared and
actually picked up business from that carnage). At that time the larger ILEC's
were focused on wire-line business... Some of you feel the pinch of this when
you go looking for Fat Pipes for your Backhaul and get shafted by the only
option available to you... That is not a random coincidence...

Yes, I am simplifying this.a lot happen when WISP's were 'sleeping'...

Now, I cringe, to see what happens in the coming years, especially since the
ILEC's have decided to focus on Wireless, in favor of the wire line...

If I was to describe what happened in the wireline world, it would be like...
The Republicans shot the small business isp/nsp/clec's in the back, and the
Democrats double nailed the coffins so that there was pretty much no chance of
possible revival.

in regards to your points.

1) Yes, that is true --> and the reason why their is a shift to focus on
Wireless / Cell

2) Have true, might be more applicable in certain areas, but not ubiquitous...
The desire to cripple the copper infrastructure has to do with
a) requirement to allow competitive access to copper wires.
b) WISP's are more like a mosquito to them, they Cable Co's have been eating
their lunch, while being totally non-regulated (line share aspect).

3) Yes, agree, especially when it comes with 'we don't have to provide
wholesale access on a regulated rate of return'.
But for some of them, it is not meaty enough :)

I don't think the "sharing" thing was ever the real objection. Everyone talks
like they had to let CLECs use their copper pairs for free, but actually the
wholesale pricing was supposed to be set at cost plus a fair profit. Some of
the UNE pricing I saw made me question how a CLEC could possibly make a profit.

The objection was to exactly what Congress hoped to accomplish with the 1996
Telecom Act, which was to lower the entry barrier for competition in local
access. The idea was that CLECs would initially rent colo cage space in the CO
for their own switch, and lease copper pairs ("unbundled network elements")
from the ILEC. Congress expected that once the more successful CLECs reached a
certain size, they would start deploying their own physical infrastructure.
None of this happened as planned. The ILECs were very successful in their
maneuvering (a lot of it at state level) to put the CLECs out of business, plus
the CLECs mostly didn't ever bury their own fiber or copper. The whole thing
pretty much fizzled. But the big ILECs wanted to block this attempt to create
competition for them. They wanted to keep the duopoly - 1 telco, 1 cableco per
town. You'll notice the cable companies don't overbuild each other, and the
wireline phone companies don't overbuild each other. I think when the govt
broke up Ma Bell, they expected the RBOCs to build into each others territories
and compete for local wireline customers.

VZ is one of those "Dividend Aristocrat" stocks. They have paid dividends
for at least a couple of decades and have a history of steadily increasing
them to exceed the inflation rate. Those are the only non index stocks I

[AFMUG] Dual Band Wifi Routers

If you have a wifi router that supports 5ghz and 2.4ghz bands and you
set the essid the same on both will devices(iphones, ipads, roku, game
consoles, etc) choose the band with the best connection?

Are you sure it's the cold and not water from the ICE getting into that

Re: [AFMUG] Dual Band Wifi Routers

2016-12-19 Thread Chris Fabien
If the SSID is the same, the device will choose which AP to associate, just
like if two 2.4 APs have same SSID. The logic on how to choose the AP and
when to switch to another is device dependant and not always implemented
well.

We set the SSID different and educate the customer to usually prefer the 5G
if the device can see it. It gets too confusing and hard to troubleshoot
when they are same SSID and the customer can't easily tell which band the
device has chosen.

I am not an expert, but I think the answer is a qualified yes.

Devices will choose a band based on some criteria. Whether it chooses the one
with the "best connection" depends. Also, Apple devices seems to prefer 5 GHz
over 2.4 no matter what.

Re: [AFMUG] T-Tommy Wheeler staying corrupt to the very end

2016-12-19 Thread Mike Hammett
The more fiber companies bought, the more that start up. Not 1:1, but it's
happening. Level 3 started buying up anyone selling dark... then Zayo comes
along and overbuilds everything.

I have confidence that VZ and AT&T couldn't keep up buying everyone.

The larger they grow, the more in-significant we all become in the bigger
picture.

I'm fine with the wireline world being decimated. It's easier to get to
competitive fiber (unless you're in Alaska) than it is to generate the market
demand that sleepy incumbents provide.

Non-the less life goes on..

Re: [AFMUG] T-Tommy Wheeler staying corrupt to the very end

2016-12-19 Thread Faisal Imtiaz
I think you are missing the point here...

You know that Bandwidth Cost is heading down-wards

and Dark Fiber Cost is being manipulated to go-upwards ...
by (acquisition, and taking excess inventory off the table).

Net result is a changing economics where only a few are actively working on
cornering the price of fiber connectivity.

If you want to see a good example of this playing out... take a look at what is
happening in the Caribbean Island connectivity.

The largest ISP's are the ones who are controlling the Undersea cable, thus
setting up the rules of the game, as they fold into each other, pitting them
against each other gets harder

I am not presenting this as doom and gloom, just saying that if you are okay
with this, don't be crying that one day you wake up to find out that the only
choice you have is between bad and worse :)

---
Where is this all leading to ?

Here is what we are seeing, I believe that both the Cable Co and the ILEC are
in a race to make alternate technologies obsolete, raising the game for
'Gigabit connectivity' (don't read this a 1g connection, anything over 300meg
would fall in this category).

ATT is quietly converting all of their ME buildings into a nice GPON based
offering.
Comcast is doing a nice overbuild...
Keep in mind both of them are monopolies, when it comes to serving territory..

So if this continues, the competitive offerings will get starved out, or be
severely marginalized by being limited in service area due to lack of viable
cost-effective backhaul.

You are going to see this in the Major Metro Areas first (starting in the next
couple of years, and building up to full steam pace in say 5 years) and
then you will this spanning out to other areas.

Will you see this in your area ? I cannot say yes or no, but this is where
things seem to be headed.

Just look at who Folks such as Centurylink has gobbled up in the last 5-10
years.
Look at the count of independent competitive providers by count 10 -15 years
ago vs today .

The larger they grow, the more in-significant we all become in the bigger
picture.

Re: [AFMUG] T-Tommy Wheeler staying corrupt to the very end

2016-12-19 Thread Faisal Imtiaz
Your portrayal below is what I can best describe as 'understanding of how the
Titanic Sank' from having watched the Movie.

What I mean by that is, you have gotten the jist of it correct, but you have no
feeling of the depth of the shenanigans which were involved.

While some circles have argued that Duopoly was acceptable to the ILEC's, my
personal opinion is that only happened after the Supreme Court Case of BrandX.
(Which solidified the Cable Operators position of not having to provide
competitive access on their network).

While we talk about copper wires, we often forget that the obligation to share
access to copper wires was a requirement due to the ILEC's being funded by
public funds, which allowed them to build their network.

When it came to sharing, the ILEC's quickly saw that new startups can and will
eat their lunch in the near future, unless they got back to calling the shots.
They like being a monopoly... these days, it is Fiber, Internet and Video (TV
Content).

Just look at the acquisitions... (all rules which could be dismantled, have
been dismantled, new rules were put in place regarding new media, which would
make it more challenging to address,)
If you don't believe me, see what is happening with VOIP and ATT VOIP =
unregulated (loosely speaking) when compared to POTS lines...

We have seen ATT bills, quietly changing POTS line billing to showing them as
VOIP lines on their Uverse Bills Guess why ?

Most of us tend not to realize how much $$$ is in Telecom...
For every nation, Telecom tends to be a significantly large part of the GDP,
and it is all $$$ made from vapor (electrons).
So it is understandable why there is such a close relationship between Telecom
and any Gov.

Some APs have "band steering". I'm not sure what's involved. Maybe it's not any
more complicated than determining a client should be on 5 gig and kicking it
from 2.4 so the device rescans? I'm too lazy to even Google it.

Well here is the Rub on this if you take Wal-Mart for example, on one hand
they have a very successful business model, and offer savings and convenience,
on the other hand they are also responsible (contribution) for decimating small
businesses and small mfg in this country ( I am not say that they were the only
factor).

The question becomes, though which lens do you want to review Wal-Mart from ?

You cannot have it both ways... :)

Besides, Wal-Mart did not build their stores with public subsides.. (cough
cough USF funds as an example ).

The more fiber companies bought, the more that start up. Not 1:1, but it's
happening. Level 3 started buying up anyone selling dark... then Zayo comes
along and overbuilds everything.

I have confidence that VZ and AT&T couldn't keep up buying everyone.

Just look at who Folks such as Centurylink has gobbled up in the last 5-10
years.
Look at the count of independent competitive providers by count 10 -15 years
ago vs today .

The larger they grow, the more in-significant we all become in th

If it has usb 3.0.

If not, just look at the other trend net stuff. been solid for a couple of

Chuck,

Not sure how you are calculating your 16% return... that fund has done
worse than the S&P 500 over the last year, last 5 years and last 10 years???

The S&P has done 12% over the last 1 year, 13.4% over 5 years and 4.73%
over the last 10 years... and your index fund is worse than that
according to the charts I just looked up.
