I registered mtin.net in 2000. Have had my e-mail since then,

Still have two .edu addresses I have had since 1993. Have a compuserve e-mail
that surprisingly still works since 1991. Alas, my Qink address stopped working
4 years ago. It was older than compuserve.

We did the same - provided email since the start. Gave them all 6
months, but we said if they want to keep their email, it'd be
$10/month. About 200 of them did so that easily pays for all the
"headache". The rest were all suspended on 1/3/17.

The number of sites forcing you to use your email address as a login is a bad
trend.

Two other things I hate: password resets via email, and password hints.

FYI, I got a notice from VZW they are stopping use of last 4 digits of SSN as
PIN. Yes, that was very secure. Like the doctors who only disclose your
medical records to someone who knows your date of birth. Or the pharmacy that
only lets someone pick up my prescription if they know my address. Surely no
hacker can determine my SSN, date of birth, home address, or first pet’s name.

Once upon a time, with a different breed of hacker, emails and websites could
be compromised for months or years before the breach was ever used. Even then
the information used was on such small scale to only be noticed by an
individual. The breaches we have now are child's play in their execution.

Haha... I wish... we had 15,000 email accounts (@ida.net) when we sold.
I could charge $1/month/account and make good money. :)

Rise moved all the emails to Everyone.Net within six months after I
sold... and they have had 3 major outages (more than 24 hours long) just
during the last 3 years... more than we ever had in 16 years.
