[AMRadio] CRYSTALS FOR AM BANDWARMING ? ?

2006-11-19 Thread Brian Carling
From: Donald Chester [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Frequencies I hear discussed are 3685, and down on the low end near 3610.

FYI guys - I have crystals right now for 3615, 3645, 3655 kHz,
3686 and 3700 kHz

I can try to get some made up for 3685 kHz if a lot of folks
want them, but it will take a few months. Let's gauge the interest
then.

What about 3680 and 3685 kHz? Kind of like a mirror of
3880 and 3885 kHz - very easy to remember.

73 to all - Brian, AF4K

Re: [AMRadio] Ranger stuff

2006-10-24 Thread Brian Carling
Jack - the typical, normal HV winding of a plate
transformer consists of this:

RED/YELLOW = center tap.

RED X 2 = HV AC to rectifier plates.

Better check the schematic of the Ranger, but I am
99% sure that is going to be where they should go.

Bry

Now I have a mystery. I am pulling out the solid state mod in the power
supply and putting tubes back in.

The mystery is that there are 13 wires coming out of the power xformer
and only 11 according to the manual.

After removing all the junk, all the voltages are correct. The problem
is that the HV wires going to the plates of rectifier are not red but
 yellow with red stripes.

The red wires seem to be the extra ones and seem to go to the power/mode
switch but I can not say for sure. They come down from the xformer, are
neatly laced into a bundle, travel to the front, up a hole and into the
 switch or key deck.

I haven't a clue what they are for and do not agree with either of the
 manuals I have.

Anyone out there have any clues?

 Brian Carling wrote:

Problem is, this apparently isn't normal.

The red leads go up to the function switch.

Jack the ONLY thing from a Ranger power transformer
that should go to the function switch, is the PRIMARY wiring,
which should be BLACK wires.

Red is for the high voltage secondary. It very much sounds
like someone has mis-wired this transmitter.

The BLUE wires are for the low voltage secondary.

See pages 6, 7, 20, 21 and 22 in the manual for all
the advice you nbeed for troubleshooting, and use the
schematic to help you rewire the thing according to
the proper connections. PLEASE be careful around that
high voltage, OM!

Do you have a schematic? Here it is if you need it for a free
download. It's the last page of the manual.

http://bama.edebris.com/manuals/johnson/ranger/

It should help you find the problem pretty easily.
You should have two red wires going to V11 pins 4
and 6, which are the plates of the 5R4GY.

The center tap which is red and yellow striped
is supposed to go to ground.

If those red wires are connected to the function switch that is a
SERIOUS error.
DO not turn it on like that!
Each one of them has about 750 to 800V AC relative
to ground (red/yellow) and a total of 1500V AC between
the two reds.

Re: [AMRadio] Octal Sockets.... more Ranger stuff

2006-10-22 Thread Brian Carling
Sometimes octal sockets will have less than 8 pins.

If an application was for a tube that didn't use all the pins,
then manufacturers would save money leaving one or two out.

Question: can new pins be inserted into such a socket to
repair it? If so, where would one get replacement pins?

It is possible that someone at the tube socket factory screwed up way back
when. Just make certain that you are counting the pin
numbers right. If so, then see if there are enough contacts in the socket to
make the necessary connections to the tube. You may
be able to remove unused contacts, and move them to the right places. You
might be able to steal some unused contacts from a
rectifier socket, too. But if the contacts were moulded into the socket,
 then that won't work.

You could also take contacts out of a similar socket from a junkbox, and put
 them in.

  My

Sorry Clay - I cannot grant your wish.

DX stations all ove rthe world buy crystals from me.
Besides I only have ONE crystal on 3790 kHz.
Perhaps sanctions would work? (grin!)

 Brian,
As an active AMer and 75M DXer, I request that you please not offer crystals
within 10 KHz of the 75M DX window which is from 3789 to 3800. Its a very
small window and many of the signals there are very weak. We know how much
we hate it when SSB QSOs start up on top of our QSOs. Let's not do the same
to the one portion of 75M where most of the operators are gentlemen who will
actually stand by so someone else can work a new country.

Re: [AMRadio] Phone band expansion

2006-10-14 Thread Brian Carling
Actually no, AM has been used in the region of 3837 kHz
for some time, and down around 7160 kHz too - hardly the
to of the band. Why do you think it is wrong?

Considering the fact that you are outnumbered by 500 to 1 at any given time,
I would think it wise to stay up at the top of each band and not go sit in
an area where DX is typically found, which is usually at the bottom of each
band. Also, since a strong SSB signal can wreak havoc with an AM signal,
you're not going to win the battle for the frequency. I operate SSB and AM
and I have seen the results of head to head confrontations. Back in the
50's and 60's when SSB was just emerging, they were allocated by gentlemen's
agreement to the top of each band because they were the minority. Now AM is
the minority so it makes sense for AM'ers to inhabit the top frequencies.
Why fight a fight that you can't win?

500-1? I think you need to get on a bit more often, Bob. AM has made a
huge comeback over the last decade, and the 'gentleman's agreement'
you mention seems only to be respected by the AMers. Just check 3870 -
3890 any night, you'll hear them trying to make problems. The reason
there haven't been AM issues in other areas in only because the AM
group tends to stay up above, certainly not because of any agreement.

Exactly Tom - he must not be hearing what I'm hearing.

Re: [AMRadio] Best AM BoatanchorReceiver or AM RiceboxReceiver Discussion

2006-10-01 Thread Brian Carling
The SYNC-AM works EXTREMELY well on the Sony
ICF-2010 receiver!

Hi Jim (JO): I have an R-75 also but only the stock filters. My S-AM has
rarely shown (if any) improvement. If I use my imagination, on weak signals,
the S-AM seems to work a little bit. Otherwise, especially with good head-
phones, the R-75 audio has a lot of lows and enough highs. Works as good or
better than my BA receivers but I like the BA stuff when working AM.

Hallicrafters SX-101 is a great receiver.

I am not a big Hammarlund fan!

   Hi Everyone,

I am new to boatanchors and need some advice. I am beginning to collect
antique radios. I want suggestions on what my first one should be. I am
living in a duplex so a xmitter is out of the questions, so I thought I'd get
a nice receiver to listen on. I would prefer something that would also
receive SSB as this will be my only reciever for a while, but not at the
sacrifice of selectivity on AM. I had a TS-850 that I unfortunately had to
sell a few months back for a move for a new job. It had great receive
(and Xmit) on AM, and so I'm wanting something in that caliber. I've read great
things about the HQ-180A but I think it's only AM and a little out of the price
I'm looking for. I'd like to find soemthing in the $300-350 range. Any
suggestions???

Well, it's been almost 7 years since I lived there, but I think
that is the 50.4 MHz group on Sunday mornings.
Back then they told me their net had been in continuous

that I can remember it was around 9 a.m. on Sundays
but I could be mistaken.

Hey, Brian. What band...2M or 6M. Freq? -73- Peter

Re: [AMRadio] VHS Video of AM Operators

2006-09-19 Thread Brian Carling
Eddy you really oughta make a DVD copy of that thing for posterity.
VHS won't last forever!

Then you could pass it along to the archivists.

 Good Morning All,

This talk about OT audio recordings clicked a bulb of remembrance from deep
 withen my feeble brain...

Way back, in the early 90's, when dawn AM roundtabling on 1888-KHz ---
spearheaded by none other than Dick (W2UJR) --- was in vogue, Brian (WB8JBT)
got the notion to start a pass around VHS video tape of the different
regulars. Every participant who received the tape was obliged to film
himself his rigs/antennas, and then pass the tape on...

Well, mine was the LAST entry onto the tape, before I passed it on to Dick
for a look-see, who, in turn, returned the original to Brian (this was
before he moved south). I made a copy for myself before I mailed it,
 though...

 The tape shows WB8JBT, N8UJR, KB8QF, myself, and a host of others...and I
still have it, and enjoy viewing it whenever the mood strikes me.

I wonder if such a thing might not be a bad idea to repeat to-day...?

Re: [AMRadio] Vintage recordings and preservation

2006-09-18 Thread Brian Carling
It would be really good to try to include some recordngs from
the 1940s and 1950s though I suspect they will be much
more difficult to obtain.

There are bound to be some folks out there who have possession of
vintage on-the-air recordings from the 60', 70' and 80's, maybe even
earlier. I know at one time Otis (K5SWK) had many, and some dating
back into the 50's. If these exist, they should not be allowed to
deteriorate or be overwritten before first getting them on digital for
preservation, either on the web or CD/DVD.

I propose that if you know of any such recordings, we somehow get
these copied. I would be willing to do some of them myself. Any
 other takers?

It would be nice to have such a nostalgic and historic resource for
QSOs forgotten placed on a website or available on CD. Gary at
amfone.net might be willing to utilize space for such media, or I
would be willing to dedicate webspace for the project...gigs if
 needed.

Let's get together on this and try to gather what we can for now and the
 future!

Anyone have contact with Otis lately? John/BXO? I know he used to
mention on the air that he had quite a library of tapes, however that
has been a long time ago.

I have also posted a message similar to this on amfone.net...

Re: [AMRadio] 6 meter AM

2006-09-06 Thread Brian Carling
Sadly I must report that the Central Florida Tuesday evening
net on 50.4 MHz AM has migrated to SSB.

Perhaps I can help revive AM in this area with some
other guys if life slows down a little for me.

Does anyone know if the DC AREA 6m AM net is still
going? I think it started over 40 years ago. The last that
I heard they were still running that net! I think it may
possibly be on Sundays.

73 de AF4K, Bry

I know not too many folks are in the Western NC or SC
area, but we have had a nice net going on for a few
years now on 50.4 Mhz AM, starting at 8 PM on
Tuesdays. Besides a couple of more modern rigs, alot
of classics are still radiating. Benton Harbor
Lunchboxes, Ameco TX62's, Clegg, to mention a few.
Have not had much luck migrating the group to 2 meters
yet though. One thing VHF nets prove though, is why
repeaters were invented. You could wear out a couple
rotors trying to work everybody on one evenings net.

[AMRadio] VHF AM REPORT - 2m Amplitude Modulation

2006-09-05 Thread Brian Carling
Two Meter AM is going strong in Europe.

Here's a report about some cross-channel contacts
from the Netherlands to England etc. on 144 MHz AM!

Looks like they use 144.55 MHz there, just up from our
144.450 MHz calling frequency. Some of you with the old
tube 2m AM rigs would be surprised what you can do with
them with just a few watts.

= = =

In view of the VHF contest activity this evening (5 Sept)

  http://www.vushf.dk/sider/contest/contestsoz.htm
  http://www.vhfcc.org/rules/06rules/2006calendar.html

and also

the potentially promising tropo condx

  http://www.dxinfocentre.com/tropo_nwe.html

I'm hoping to be QRV this evening from a /P location from about
19:00 local time (=17:00 UTC)

The evenings are getting shorter now so I may only have abt 60 -
90mins of useful operating time (before it gets too dark)

My main operating mode is J3E - but my /P 2m station is A3E
capable

I'll try to remember to put some calls out in the direction of the
UK on 144,550 (+/- QRM)

Otherwise if anyone hears me on another mode/QRG then I would be
happy to QSY and try for a contact on AM

Unless I'm completely mistaken I believe that the crystal inside the
 holder
(a large octal based oven) is an HC6/u type. One can plug in FT-243
 type
xtals in the oven sockets, or use modern style HC6/u with fat pins.

Thanks Ed - I can supply 3870 kHz crystals (and others) in
either one of those two cases - HC6U or FT-243. Just specify
what you need rather than a transmitter model.
I don't keep a roster of the old broadcast rigs so as to
know what crystal case is required!

The following AM frequencies are readily available:
FT243:
3800, 3805, 3810, 3816.8, 3825, 3830, 3837, 3840 kHz
3855, 3865, 3870, 3875, 3880, 3885, 3890, 3900 kHz
3912.5, 3915, 3930, 3935, 3940, 3948, 3983, 3993, 3996.3 kHz.

Many of these are also available as HC6U types.
E-mail me off the list for details.

Re: [AMRadio] Re: Value of Homebrew RIgs

2006-07-13 Thread Brian Carling
Todd - tell us which is the BEST of these three:

1) Rig gets put in garage or attic to rust or rot.

2) Rig gets put into crusher or land fill never to be seen again
(modern military approach)

3) Rig gets put on display like a piece of art work in a
ham's private Museum - but never transmits or receives.
Yet COULD be made to do so at some later point.

1) and 2) make 3) sound like a VERY acceptable alternative
to me... think about that.

I'm a big fan of free enterprise, capitalism, and freedom in general.
Anyone spending their money can do with it whatever they wish. My
remarks deal mainly with those who choose to turn a nice old receiver
or transmitter into a 'piece of (non-functioning) art' instead of
using it as a radio. It really has nothing to do with age, more
mentality. You really can't do much with a Monet other than hang it on
the wall or use it as a beer tray. But IMHO those who get nice old
cars, radios, or whatever else simply for the bragging rights and not
to use and enjoy are better suited to stamps, pantings, or other
inanimate objects that don't require any interaction beyond staring at
them. Besides, it's much more impressive to say I paid 4 million for
this painting than to say I paid 4 thousand for this old radio. Who
beyond other radio collectors would be impressed?

In the end, you can use an SX-88 or KW-1 for a 30.06 target if you
want to, no argument there. I'm far more impressed when someone has a
nice rig and know how to use it than by how much they paid for it.
Even moreso if they can fix it, or built it.

It's strictly my opinion mind you, but I believe more BA folks
appreciate a piece of gear for what it is and can do, not its
potential value as an investment. Collins gear is some of the best
gear ever made, yet look at how many real 'hands on' radio folks think
less of it because of the ridiculous 'mine's bigger than yours'
collector mentality of a self-absorbed few?

Age isn't the issue as far as I'm concerned. It's attitude. God Bless
anyone who makes it to retirement and actually has money to spend on
whatever they enjoy. There are some in gov't looking for more ways to
take it from you to redistribute to others, so spend it while you can!

Re: [AMRadio] do not ground tower

2006-06-14 Thread Brian Carling
SHUNT FEED works fine with a grounded tower.

That is what I used on 160m at one time and it worked
very well.

A grounded tower is safer.

4K

I recommend not grounding the tower. Makes it harder
to load up. Find a good ceramic insulating base like
you're supposed to have, and the correct guy wire
insulators spaced to minimize interaction with the
 radiating element, the tower.

Here, you can see how we tried it the other way and I
just couldn't get the loading to set.

Re: [AMRadio] do not ground tower

2006-06-14 Thread Brian Carling
For my 160m shunt fed tower I had a Rohn 25 - a 60 footer
with a few feet buried in concrete...

So I dug out some old articles on how to do it.

Now, I DID have a good capacity hat in the form of
a 4 element Swan TB4HA beam at the top.
AND an 11 element Cushcraft bean on 2m FM above that.

I had deliberately installed insulators on the guy wires,
so that was not a problem.

Ran a piece of #12 gauge solid copper wire up the side
about 12 off the tower to a copper pipe standing off
at about the 40 or 50 foot level and attached firmly to
the tower with two U bolts. This is all from memory.
There was a sreries variable capacitor at the bottom of
the shunt line, and it worked really well. Flat SWR
anywhere I wanted on Top Band!

73 de AF4K, Bry

Don K4KYV writes:

I prefer the base insulator and series feed myself. Shunt feed or unipole
feed works great if the tower is close to a resonant length. It becomes
more difficult if the tower is much shorter than natural resonance.

Sometimes top loading will make shunt feeding easier, since it raises the
resonant frequency of a short tower. Series feed, if you can find an
insulator, gives you a lot more options in tuning up the tower.

Of course, if you are stuck with a typical ham radio style jury rig where
the bottom section was embedded several feet into the concrete base, you
have no choice. Unless the tower is short enough to stand without guys,
that is about the worst possible way to erect a tower. A tall guyed tower
is subject to much additional stress when the base is rigidly set in
concrete; it cannot sway or rotate in heavy winds, and that can cause
failure of the tower structure. If it is mounted with a base plate and pier
pin, or a ball-and-socket insulator as AM broadcast towers are constructed,
the base of the tower can follow the movements of the tower instead of
having the entire tower bend and twist under high winds.

Re: [AMRadio] RE: REPLY and REPLY-ALL The Same?

2006-06-13 Thread Brian Carling
When the list is set up the old way, hitting either REPLY or
REPLY-ALL in MS-Outlook does exactly the same thing--it replies only to
the list. The only way to reply to the individual is to go back into the
original e-mail, copy the individual's e-mail address out of it, go back
to your reply and paste the individual's e-mail address over top of the
 list name--not too convenient.

Or get a better (uncrippled) e-mail program.

[AMRadio] RE: K4KYV on How the reply button works

2006-06-12 Thread Brian Carling
Exactly, Don this is the issue in a nutshell... you have
to remember. That is something that us senior citizens are
not too good at!

Just look at all of the dupes we get from AM Radio and
on Glowbugs!

It's not a huge issue, but Outlook does put that limitation on
us because it only gives two choices - REPLY or
REPLY-ALL.
So it is extra work for one Outlook user to delete the
excess addresses on one end, OR extra work to delete
the excess messages for several hundred people on
the other end, hi hi.

Don, K4KYV writes:

I seem to recall that most lists, when you hit Reply, the message goes
 to
the sender of the message only. When you hit Reply All it goes to the
sender AND to the list, so the sender gets two duplicate messages. To
 avoid
that, you have to delete the sender, so that it just goes to the list. If
there are other addressees on the original message, the Reply all
 message
goes to each of them as well.

I have inadvertently sent what was intended to be a private response to
 the
entire list more than once. It can be embarrassing. It could conceivably
bring on legal liability as well.

Please have it EITHER reply to the LIST OR to the individual,

Every other list that I subscribe to operates the way you now have it set.

On various threads about including previous text I have tried to make
the following clear, but it seems that I have not been able to get my
  point across.

First of all; I do not mind people posting for sale ads on the list so
long as they are items that are somewhat related to the items needed
by a lot of BA owners, builders, etc.

  The problem is as follows:

Sellers are required to post at the TOP of your list of items for sale
that the buyer reply to you directly. Do so in capital letters... I
have asked sellers to do this at least three times in the past three
or four months. From this point forward, you will have a three
strike, and you're out policy on your membership.

Same goes for buyers. There is absolutely NO reason to post your
desire to buy something, along with the entire list the seller posted
in the original message back to the 500 or so members of this list!
The rest of us don't need to see the list again, not to mention what
YOU want to buy! Three strikes and you're out too...

Sorry it has to come to this, however I've tried several times to
convey this rule without being a total AH, and it hasn't worked. If
you missed it, look in the archives.

  Let's make this happen!

So, a kind of random mix of 40m and 30m and 12 meter
rocks. Fun for homebrewing.

One has the pins slightly squeezed in but it still works fine...
All are CR1A rocks (8) except for the 7038.9 crystal which
is in a DC35 holder from :Silver Cut Crystal Co. and has
one slightly munged pin. Kind of a mongrel group, so
the price is low, he he...

The first $18.00 plus $6.00 shipping takes them home.
E-mail me if you would like them. 73 - Brian, AF4K

AND at:

I hope it's helpful!

Some time back in 2005 I found a guy that rewound the power transformer for
my HRO60. He did a great job and his price was reasonable. I have another
transformer that needs to be rewound and I can't locate his name. Can
anyone help me find this guy? I think he was somewhere in the East. Maybe
 in 3 land, not sure.

Pfft! How DARE anyone get excited about band openings?
QUICK, throw water on them! LOL

On a good sporadic E opening, you can have solid audio and strong
signal levels. The key is being there when it happening. Since we're at
the bottom of the sunspot cycle, consistent and/or long term great
conditions, can only be a dream.

[AMRadio] White Face Johnson

2006-05-27 Thread Brian Carling
Richard, Mike, Pete etc.

Thinks... I'll tell 'em where to put their Johnsons! - LOL

Mike wrote...

I still, however, think it would be fun to put one on 15 meters since that
band will wake up before 10. As someone indicated, that would take a bit
more work, but probably not as much as putting one on 160.

Speaking of multi-band AM rigs... one of the popular schemes
in the early 1960s in the UK was to homebrew an AM transmitter
for both 160m and 2m AM!! Or sometimes they were for 160m
AM and 4m AM (70 MHz band) - not that we have 4m in the
USA, but it is kind of equivalent to 6m, I suppose.

Those rigs would leverly use a single local oscillator with
the appropriate mutipliers and mixers and voila - two band rig
for 160m and VHF in one box!

160m AM was THE local band/mode for there in the 1960s,
before 2m AM caught on, and LONG before 2m FM kicked in.

THOSE were the days! 10 watts were all anyone needed for
either band!

For those who love the old rigs and remember the old days
fondly, WE will hang on to and cherish our older rigs but,

For those who hate nostalgia, and have only miserable
memories of the past - sure - go ahead and put your old
WhIteface Johnsons in the trash!

I suppose there is a type of magic using a converted CB, but I would
probably find a Ranger, AF-67 or such to use. It does have a bit more
 power
but that is a bit of a plus with the propagation of today. One can also
move to 15 meters with them which the CB would not do without extensive
 modifications.

One man's magic rig is another man's dumpster destiny,
and another guy's dumpster-diving treasure!

Beauty is often in the eye of the beholder. Those who have
never run a converted Johnson whiteface or chromefaced
rig on 10m AM will never know how much fun they are
missing!

N4XY responds to Pete's comments about the recommendation
of trashing an old, NIB Johnson Whiteface transciver:

QUOTE:
Since I can't let Pete's comment(s) sit, I'll make one last public
remark, then drop it on the list as far as my own comments are
concerned. The trick is going to be to do this without flame. So here
goes:

Where else does one put an NOS/NIB radio with all the papers/etc? It
would be fine to get it out and operate on occasion, but since it is
CB, I just wouldn't do that. Yet... I would have considered buying it
(these days I probably couldn't have afforded this particular jewel:
it's an allocation of resources thing) if I was suitably flush. Why?
Because, as I said, I consider it to have serious significance within
a Historical perspective of the HF Spectrum. THIS radio was THE radio
CBs were compared against for years. I only know about it at all
because of the number of 'Citizens' I heard/overheard talking about
White-Face-Johnsons. I believe its place in the chronicles of HF
Radio in general is a significant one; and it just seems like a shame
to find a NEW one and chop it up. Now that I think about it, if I WAS
flush, I'd try to buy this myself in a heartbeat. I think it is that
significant.

Now for the difficult-almost-flame part: Why in the world are you
even ON a reflector like this one Pete, if radios-to you-are just
bundles of components? And if it's just CBs ONLY that you feel that
way about, why is yours an opinion even worth remarking? As folks
like to say these days: whatever. Please feel free to disparage all
you like off-list-and I guess even one good shot ought to be allowed
ON list since I took this one. I actually do not mean it as an
insult, but am mostly just curious. You seem to have no respect for
equipment at all.

One small aside: I do not mean to be wearing false colors: I am the
Reflector Manager for the QSL.NET EFJohnson email Reflector. I cannot
recall EVER seeing anything about CB on there. If there ever has
been, it has been so infrequent I just don't remember it (and
wouldn't have paid much attention to it anyway.) I just didn't want
somebody thinking about it later and seeing some agenda in this.

approximate 4%. Usually 5% is where most people go since it takes such

I built a power supply with an 8 Amp transformer from FAIR RADIO

From what I understand the filaments and auto tune on the ART-13

REFLECTED power goes back into the RF final and is disippated

or so-called FALSE STATEMENT. I am not so sure it is false
 though!

 That is a myth.

Thanks - I stand corrected. I think I read that in some
ham magazine years ago and it got stuck in my head!

I can accept the idea that most wattmeters give false readings
on FWD power too!

Re: [AMRadio] 160 meters

2006-04-23 Thread Brian Carling
If I remember right, 1.880 - 1.9 or so had most the AM activity. There used
to be an ol' buzzard BC-610 group that met around 1.985 or so, but I don't
know if they are still around. I haven't been on the air in some time
(fixing to change that), so someone else might have better advice on this.

 73,
 Brian / w5ami

There are also some very active groups on 1885, 1945, 1985
and occasionally on 1900 and 1930 kHz.

In the U.K. the popular AM frequencies are 1915, 1925 and
1930 kHz.

RE: [AMRadio] antenna tuners transmision lines and more

2006-04-23 Thread Brian Carling
Some of these MYTHS may actually be myths about myths.

Actually there are a number of commercially manufactured tube
RF finals that DO indded use toroidal transformers.
Dentron, for one example - they made a number of linear amps
like that, and they were/are not alone.

When we speak of SWR, we are actually measuring VSWR
in most cases, i.e. VOLTAGE standing wave ration - not
current. Although they are related of course.

The power may not be wasted very much in the tuner, BUT
REFLECTED power goes back into the RF final and is disippated
in the famil amplifier device(s) - at least many people have
written articles for decades describing that marticular myth
or so-called FALSE STATEMENT. I am not so sure it is false
though!

You are correct Gary, it is very confusing to many and I was one
confused guy for many years. It's not easy to get a grip on things of
this nature. Invisible radiation and weird parts that have no movement,
makes it all seem like wizardry and magic. Of course this is what makes
it fascinating. I'll just add some more to the confusion.

I am by no way a XPERT on this stuff but I have been told that I
have a way with words as long as I can get a spell checker working. I
have been asked to do some of this writing. I feel that I should share
this with others and I have chosen this place to do it. I don't have a
lot of opportunity to go get on the air much any more. I get stuck here
at home watching kids once in a while and so this is when I type up
 these long stories.

So please excuse the long winded transmission here.
I hope some one gets something from it.

 Old Wives Tales (Misleading statements)

FALSE STEAMENT #1 -- A high SWR reading is an indication that a lot of
power is wasted and not being radiated. -
TRUE STATEMENT --- SWR is the ratio of currents measured at physical
points on a transition line. It is the ratio of the maximum current on
the line verses the minimum current on the line. These two physical
points will be 1/4 electrical wavelength apart. They do not necessarily
have to be at the load end or the source end. IF the load end is
representative of a pure resistive load then the SWR will be the ratio
of the load resistance to the line characteristic impedance. If the
load resistance is non reactive and equal to the line characteristic
impendence then the SWR is 1:1 and current will be the same at any point
on the transmission line that you care to measure it except for the
normal loss due to line characteristics. Even a perfectly matched
load:line such will have slightly less current and voltage at the load
end than at the source end although as some one earlier pointed out, It
is generally a negligible difference. It would need to be a very long
line to be significant on 80 or 40 meters.

FALSE STATEMENT #2 --- There is no need for a tuner if the antenna is
resonate and the line is matched.
TRUE STATEMENT -- If the antenna feed point is equal to the line Z and
the transmitter is made to work into this load then there may be no need
for a tuner. This is an almost impossible task as some one pointed out
earlier, and even if it were to be done it would only be true for a very
small range of frequencies. QSY would be a compromise.

FALSE STATEMENT #3 --- Tuners waste a lot of power and just make the
transmitter think the antenna is right.
TRUE STATEMENT --- A tuner consists of coils and capacitors neither of
which by mathematical definition consumes energy. The adjustments of
the coils and capacitors change the phase as well as the voltage to
current ratios of input and output. The slight amount of energy that
may be consumed by tuners is generally so negligible that it is very
difficult to measure. In some cases a tuners components maybe made of
poor quality material and too small for the job. These types of
components will get hot. Heat is an obvious point of loss. I had a
small MFJ tuner that was manufactured some years ago. It was just a
small external Pi-Net device and I found it to have a measurable
insertion loss. It turned out to be the rivets that held the connectors
on the little chassis. I soldered braid across the connectors to the
chassis and then the loss was then immeasurable.

Modern solid state equipment is designed to work into a 50 ohm non
reactive load. Connecting a dummy load of 60 ohms instead of 50 ohms
will cause the rig to put out less RF current and make the automatic
drive level circuitry start pulling back on drive prematurely. If the
load becomes slightly reactive as well then the RF production will
decrease rapidly. A tuner is nearly a must for these rigs.

In tube type XMTRs the use of toroidal transformers for the output is
impossible because of the high output Z of tubes. These rigs used
instead a Pi-NET or link coupled tuned circuitry to do the job of
matching the tube to the low impedance output. This type

 I don't believe in them.

If you can't resonate your antenna, then what are you doing?

You ar etransmitting some energy and you are getting a whole
lot of reflected power that is wasted. You might also be cutting
back a lot of your power in the final RF amplifier of a modern rig.

If you use a tuner, you are creating a voltage divider effect that
creates a reactive load in your shack, to ground that makes your antenna
 feed line + radiating elements.

Maybe - what if the tuner is outside at the base of the antenna?

Over the years, the importance of having at least a 2:1 match with at
least 1.5:1 some where in the the antenna design.

Huh?

Over the years many of us have transmitted with a 3:1 SWR and
no tuner and made plenty of contacts - tube finals of course!

Proper antenna design for your favorite frequencies is the best choice.

But some of us can't always get what we want. When you MUST
compromise, there is a LOT of good that can be said about
a matching network for one's antenna. It is usually an impedance
transformer rather than a voltage divider.

 I currently use a multi-element dipole to cover 80,40,20,15 and 10 meters.

Just like microphones in the sound work I help out with at church. If
they are not singing into the mic, I cannot fix it without creating a
gain structure that is sucking up to feed back

Different entirely from an antenna tuner.

You need to fix your problems at the source.

The antenna is the load.

I our cases, it is resonance of your antenna, by some means.

Even my hamstick on my jeep

I have had GREAT success RESONATING antennas with a matching
network. I don't understand why anyone would not believe in
something when they are so effective.

Re: [AMRadio] DX-40

2006-04-18 Thread Brian Carling
I have heard some DX40s and DX60s that sound really great
on AM using a D104 with no modifications. I get good reports
on my DX60 with the D104. These rigs are a bit finnicky on
adjustment of the drive level, drive tune, loading, grid
current etc. If things are not just right, they can act strange
and probably won't sound as good.

 Ken,

Don told me of a modification to help control the over drive caused by
the D-104 and I think I'll try it when I have time. The DX-40 should
sound real good once the audio is adjusted properly. Hopefully, we can
compare notes on the air real soon.

   Hi,

I am running an HR-10 RX in my shack outside and am wondering how
   to cure an
annoying fault. Or, this may be bad design, but I don't remember
   this from when
   I was a kid.

When i turn up the RF Gain, and end up close to full on it, I get

   back.

The RF Gain is in series with the Cathode of the first RF stage of the RX.

perhaps a Zener diode to cure it?

And if so, I guess I should measure the voltage someplace and
   clamp with a
zener, but then again, I would be modifying the whole circut.

Anyone know how to fix this?

Re: [AMRadio] AM filter for an SB-300

You can find those AM filters around.
I found one for about $35 - 40 for AM on my SB300 the best

I have seen some for more, but just watch eBay. A lot
less work than making your own, and not too expensive
usually!

 re-thinking it.

I just did exactly this. I tried modifying an SSB filter - no luck at all.
The closest I could get was to eliminate two of the crystals but the blow-by
outside the main passband was unbearable. Then I changed the four crystals
 in
the SSB filter to the frequencies in a Heath AM filter - that worked really
well. To keep the costs down I got the crystals from Petersen Radio at $11
 each.

I used my spectrum analyzer with tracking generator to confirm operation and
 tweak the parallel cap values.

Re: [AMRadio] cb to 10 meters

2006-04-04 Thread Brian Carling
Could you move them up instead by 2.035 MHz and hit 29.000
MHz OK?

Is there still any AM activity cenetered around 29.100 MHz also?

On 3 Apr 2006 at 22:20, Mike Duke, K5XU wrote:

Most of the older 23 channel units used a mixing scheme which involved one
set of 4 crystals, and one set of 6.

The standard conversion was to shift the set of 6 crystals up by 2 mhz each.
Back then, the crystals were cheap. Now, I doubt you will find them for less
than $10 or more each. Of course, you could only change one or two crystals,
and you would have a similar number of new frequencies (4 per crystal).

Moving these crystals upward by 2 mhz placed channel 1 at 28.965, etc. As
someone has already mentioned, this pattern skips right over 29.0, but does
fall onto 29.005 for channel 4.

The later 23 channel pll units, and every 40 channel unit that I saw from
the late 70s and early 80s could be converted by moving one crystal upward
by whatever amount you wanted to move the rig.

I have a 1980ish Sharp 40 channel rig converted this way, using the standard
2 mhz upward move, and it works great when the band is open. I bought it
from a BC engineer who did a really neat job with the conversion, and it is
otherwise unmodified. My first contact with it in 1998 was with a kh6.

Someday, I may ask someone to add at least one more crystal, 5 khz higher or
lower than the one currently in the unit. This will give me 40 more
channels, and allow operation on 29.0, 29.010, etc.

I bought a new pll board for a late 90s Maxon rig, and it fell flat as a
pancake. The receiver worked fine, but the transmitter wave form and audio
were awful. Having already spent more money that the thing was worth in the
first place, I scrapped it and bought an HTX10.

It's amazing what the converted cb sets will do with the right band
conditions. If you have one, drag it out, change it over, and have it ready
to go when the band comes back. If nothing else, it will be a wonderful
monitor complete with a good squelch circuit.

In a 24 hour period, the W1AW bulletin transmissions generally last 10

as if that somehow made it legal and made K1MAN illegal.
Faulty logic if one is trying to say or imply that!

If it is not an issue according to the rules, then why even
bother bringing it up? Our opinions about the length of
someone's radio transmission are no more important than
our opinions of the length of anything else.

I am not saying I support everything K1MAN has done, but I
certainly don't give blanket support to the fanatics who
persecute him either.

Never said there was a FCC rule limiting Bulletin time. I timed them on

worry about only W1AW alleged QRM, we should be very happy. They are
small fish in the overall amateur band QRM problems.

What does any of this K1MAN/W1AW stuff have to do with AM discussion?
 Let's
get back on track here folks.

Actually, there is a connection with the AM community that hits some raw
nerves, besides the longtime QRM to the AM window caused by his 3890 kc
bulletins. Back in the 1980's during the FCC's AM power proceeding, K1MAN
filed a lawsuit in federal court challenging the FCC's decision. There was
supposed to have been a 7-year grandfather period under the old power rule,
after which the FCC had promised to reconsider, if there is any
 justification to do so.

During a discussion of the issue with ARRL officials, Dave Sumner mentioned
that K1MAN's lawsuit had hardened the FCC's position, and he thought it
would be very difficult to get them to change their minds at that point.

When they went to court, Baxter totally blew the case, according to other
AM'ers in attendance. He acted as his own attorney, and during the court
proceedings got completely sidetracked onto some tangent about his disaster
relief efforts with I.A.R.N. following the Mexico City earthquake (which had
absolutely nothing to do with the AM power issue). The judge ruled in favor
of the FCC, saying that the court was routinely deferring to the expertise
of the regulatory agency (the FCC).

Afterwards, I attended an FCC Forum at Dayton, where Johnny Johnston was
presiding at the Q-A session. I posed the question, if the FCC was planning
to follow up on its stated commitment to reconsider the AM power issue at
the end of the grandfather period, in 1990. Johnston's reply: You took us
to court, remember? When I pointed out that it was K1MAN who took the FCC
to court, Johnston's replay was, As far as I'm concerned, it was the
amateur community who took us to court. That's an issue that got caught up
 in 'circumstances'.

The historic AM power limit may have very well fallen victim to a petty ego
struggle between Johnston and his hinchmen at the FCC, and K1MAN.

I've already had two people leave the list
 today.

If someone left the list over something so trivial as that one thread of
discussion, they must be pretty thin-skinned. I doubt if they were
contributing very much anyway. We're probably better off without them. Is
the delete button broken on their computer?

Interesting stuff...

The DISCUSSION section about mentioninmg a web site is
interesting - that may now be an issue, but I didn't see any firm
conclusion.

Also I would think ARRL in Newington should be VERY
careful before they fire up their W1AW Broadcasts now.
This precedent could easily be applied to them, if someone
wanted to entrap them. I can't imagine that happening at
the moment, but if in the future the ARRL becomes very
unpopular, radio amateurs and the FCC could easily go
after W1AW with these same legal reasonings.

I wonder if he will file an appeal with the Department of Justice
or the superior courts etc. In the past this guy has always found
so many options in the courts. The whole thing has this flavor
of and old time feud... seems like it should be tried in rural
Kentucky rather than in Maine or Boston!

Hello Mark,

Do you need a 29 MHz crystal (FT243) for the DX60?
I have them on 7250 kHz (X4) if you know anyone who needs one!

 Hi Mark,

I had to leave right after our non-contact to pick up my wife from work
since her car is out of service at the moment. If I had been available I
would have tuned up my DX-60 to try that contact although I guess my HTX-10
and amp is about equal to the DX-60 barefoot.. See you on the air sometime.

 Hi Tom --

I'm South of Red Lion (which is south of York), and the beam was
pointed to the west, so I was 90 degrees off from you; I should've
 swung the beam around!!

 Thanks for trying !!

This look good for some free time then. Will be on 29.0.

Jim -- I haven't worked on the RCA at all yet. I'm trying to get the
DX-100B back together and off the bench, then it's time to recap the
SX-101A. That should take me to summer, when I plan on hauling the
RCA out onto the driveway for some serious cleaning.
