Eventually more of them got citations, and one of their ringleaders
moved to Texas, so the original group split up. Some of them are
probably SK now. Some of the activity on '92 is a remnant of that group.

1) Rig gets put in garage or attic to rust or rot.

2) Rig gets put into crusher or land fill never to be seen again
(modern military approach)

3) Rig gets put on display like a piece of art work in a

Yet COULD be made to do so at some later point.

using it as a radio. It really has nothing to do with age, more

In the end, you can use an SX-88 or KW-1 for a 30.06 target if you
want to, no argument there. I'm far more impressed when someone has a
nice rig and know how to use it than by how much they paid for it.
Even moreso if they can fix it, or built it.

It's strictly my opinion mind you, but I believe more BA folks
appreciate a piece of gear for what it is and can do, not its
potential value as an investment. Collins gear is some of the best
gear ever made, yet look at how many real 'hands on' radio folks think
less of it because of the ridiculous 'mine's bigger than yours'
collector mentality of a self-absorbed few?

Age isn't the issue as far as I'm concerned. It's attitude. God Bless
anyone who makes it to retirement and actually has money to spend on
whatever they enjoy. There are some in gov't looking for more ways to
take it from you to redistribute to others, so spend it while you can!

I agree absolutely. I would never support prohibition against collecting --

redistribution of anyone's wealth. But, I certainly claim the right to
question the motives or even the sanity of someone who behaves as I
described in my previous post (the lighthearted nature of which I hope
showed through without the need for smiley faces).

If a guy wants to fill his house up with Pez dispensers, or baseball caps,
or whatever, that's his business. When does collecting become hoarding? It a
guys wants a pristine example of every piece of gear that Collins ever made,
and sets out to acquire them, that is great. More power to him. On the other
hand, if a guy set out to purchase every piece of Collins gear he can find,
which then disappear into his basement never to be seen or heard again
(until he croaks, as a John pointed out), I don't think that is fine. I
think it is indicative of mental health issues, and it is harmful to the
hobby within a hobby of collecting old ham rigs as it keeps other folks
from being able to participate. There is an unlimited supply of Pez
dispensers, but there is a very limited supply of old radios. If there
weren't, then a 75A4 would still sit all day in the hot sun at a hamfest
with a yellow sticky on it that says '$100 OBO'.

Just my opinion - if you feel I have stepped on anyone's toes, that's ok. I
probably did. If you have ten John Valiants in your basement I think you
should sell some of them. But while I sure wouldn't support you being forced
to sell them, I reserve my right to question your actions - in a gentlemanly
and lighthearted manner, of course. This is a hobby, afterall. It is
supposed to be fun.

When I was a 13 yesr old novice (WN4YEJ)I went to work after school in a TV

business radio there we used to talk to the service vans. It was right
next to the workbench where I was happily changing out 50C5's and 35W4's all
afternoon.

One day it was making strange noises, like waves breaking on a beach. Then I
heard someone say ... in Arizona. I picked up the mic and said This is
Georgia, and he replied I hear that Georgia station .

I freaked out and quickly went back to work. For the next week I expected to
get to work after school and see an FCC monitoring truck waiting for me!

It wasn't until much later when I saw another White Faced Johnson that I
realized it has been a CB station that I had worked Arizona on all those
years before.

The Brownings had a capacitor that caused the receiver to mute slowly so

caps for a long ping and a short ping, or turn it off altogether.

Really skillful ops would wave the mic in front of the speaker causing the

[AMRadio] 10 Meter AM Frequencies

2006-04-03 Thread Theo Bellamy

I seem to remember that about 20 years ago some folks were converting 23
channel CB rigs to use on 10 meters (by legal hams, of course). I think they
were just changing four of the xtals in the xtal synth circuit and ending up
with 23 channels in the 10 meter band. At the time I think there was some
sort of agreed upon scheme so everyone was ending up on the same 23
frequencies. Does anyone know what these are?

If not, what would be a good choice of frequencies for such a conversion? I
have an old antique tube type CB rig I want to put on 10 meters.

[AMRadio] Homebrew Receivers (was: receiver tests for Theo)

2006-03-07 Thread Theo Bellamy
Brett,

I sure would like to see some pics of your homebrew receiver, and hear some
more about it's design (tube lineup, if strip, audio section, etc). I have
never built a receiver. Lots of amps, some cw transmitters, and lots of
accessories and surplus mods, but no receivers. Did you design it yourself,
or did you pattern it after a published design (like the famous HBR series)?

My requirements are for AM only on 160, 80, and 40, with attractive
classic appearance and controls that are pleasing to use. This is for a
station that will be installed in the den so it can't be an ugly mess o'
wires n' boxes.

My recording setup is an old cassette tape deck that happens
to be rack mount.

The receiver filter is 5.5Kc since my ears don't work well
at high frequencies, so the recording is limited...

I have never taken an analog tape and converted it to
a digital format.
I would wonder how good a typical sound card would work
converting analog to digital.

On the subject of picking a receiver, I got tired of
the limitations or flaws of all the commercial stuff, it
seems every receiver is a compromise between cost and function,
some had great audio but you had no idea of the frequency you were on.
Others did SSB very well, and AM lousy.
Some did AM well, and ssb poorly.
Some looked very cool, some were very ugly.
Some drifted, some were stable.
Some were very quiet (old stuff) some were very noisy (new stuff).
Some had good bandwidth choices, others had poor or no
choices.
Some make no provision for TX muting.

If you don't want to band hop, the r390 series works very well on AM,
although it needs outboard audio and is on the noisy side.

My homebrew receivers were built to function, I want low noise,
low distortion, accurate frequency readout, 160, 80 and 40 meter
coverage, a xtal BFO for zero beating AM signals, a scope output,
an S meter, and good AM selectivity choices.
As an added benefit, I made it look like the rest of the
home brew stuff, and made it so when you switch bands it goes
from 1880, to 3880, to 7290 when you change bands.

They SEEM to work well, but I need someone with good hearing
to really nit pick them.

Eventually, I want to add many bandwidth choices, 4, 5, 6, and 8Khz maybe.

Other than the homebrews, I only have the G76 and an Icom 756 pro.
The G76 has audio amp limitations, the 756 is very noisy, and rolls
off the low end even with outboard audio.
There are many times I could not copy signals on the R390a or the 756
that were good copy on the homebrews, weak signals on quiet bands is
where the homebrews really shine.

I would think an NC300 or 303 with outboard audio might be reasonable
and sound good.
The R390 series has a scope output built in, and it works well
on receive and transmit. Its got muting, its accurate, but it
is expensive and trouble prone..

Just my two cents...

 Theo,

In addition to looking up some AMers around your area,
I'd recommend asking for some sound files from people
who can record from the receiver candidates.

This past weekend Brett N2DTS and myself were in QSO
on 40m with a fellow running a very clean sounding
DX-100. We both rolled tape on a specific part of the
guy's transmission. Brett if you still have that sound
file, maybe render it down to an MP3 and I'll do the
 same?

 We can then describe receivers.

Meantime, there are some other sound files kicking
around that are worth downloading. I've got a few that
I remember what receiver I used:

From the diode of an SP600 at 13Kc selectivity:
 http://www.wa3vjb.com/sound/HUZ-FT102%20(2).mp3

From the diode of an R390 at 16kc selectivity:
 http://www.wa3vjb.com/sound/W2DTC-doodler.mp3

From the line output of an R390A at 8Kc:
 http://www.wa3vjb.com/sound/W0VMC.mp3

Steve, WB3HUZ has a pile o' files too:
 http://www.amwindow.org/audio/htm/audio.htm

Here is the sound of a 51S-1F up on 10 meters AM:
 http://www.amwindow.org/audio/mov/f5hsh.mov

In addition, check this batch of wav and MP3:
 http://www.amfone.net/audio/

These will give a continuum of sound quality for sure.

RE: [AMRadio] 51J3 or 75A3?

2006-03-06 Thread Theo Bellamy

Wow! Thanks for all the great insights. It has me rethinking the entire idea
of putting together a classic AM station for late night Hi-Fi Radio. My
original idea was to recreate the feel of the station in which I took my
Novice test back in '64. It was a 75A4 and a Globe King 500B. But that
notion has since taken a turn to be more focused on audio quality than
nostalgia (while still using classic rigs), hence my original question.

Seems I have lots to learn yet before I decide what to do. The suggestion
that I go visit some collectors and listen to a number of different
receivers is a good one. Any volunteers within a couple hundred mile radius
of Charlotte, NC?

Thanks again all!

Just a thought. Maybe you're worrying over it too much?

Ha! Probably so but researching these things is half the fun. I have
had lots of vintage receivers in the past (especially Collins), but I
usually used them on CW or SSB. The last old gear station I had was a
Johnson Valiant and a 75A4. I thought the 75A4 was doing ok (it has an R390A
AM filter cobbled into it) until I got a 51J4 which seemed much better on
AM. So, I thought for this set up I would spend a little more time learning
from the guys who have been more dedicated to 'Angel Music' that I have
been.

I usually just end up with whatever rig catches my eye at a flea market or
whatever. I am hoping to take a different approach this time.

RE: [AMRadio] receiver tests for Theo

2006-03-06 Thread Theo Bellamy

Paul,

Thanks! Very cool ... I will listen to them again tonight on the ham shack
computer where I can play them back through some good speakers without the
distractions that abound here in the office.

I hate it when trivial work concerns interfere with my important hobby
activities.

[AMRadio] 51J3 or 75A3?

2006-03-04 Thread Theo Bellamy
I am shopping for a receiver to use on AM. I think I want either a 75A3 or a
51J3. Which one is best for AM use as far as making pleasing sounds come out
of the speaker? I used to have a 51J4 and a 75A4, and they worked fine
(especially the 'J4), but I have heard that the 'J3 may have the best
sounding audio section for AM. True?

Thanks,

RE: [AMRadio] wireless cross-technology

2006-03-03 Thread Theo Bellamy
Good thing you have an extra one, Bob. Seems everyone is out of stock on the
900 mHz headset/mics. All they have now are Blue Tooth versions which are
much shorter range ... :-(

If anyone knows of a source for one (Logitech 980118 Cordless Freedom
Headset or similar non-Blue Tooth model) I sure would like to know about it.

In Ref to wireless Headsets...I have a logitech wireless headset with
boom mike on 900 MHz that works anywhere on my property. Not a big
estate HI!!!
I can listen and transmit using VOX from anywhere. One line to the
headphone jack and one to the mike jack. Works full duplex... About $35
anywhere on Internet. It is called the Logitech Cordless Freedom
Headset. It has 20 scanning channels, Base station with rechargeable
Batteries, Don't know the cost today as I purchased mine a good 5 years
ago and have an extra one still in the box. It says up to 1000 feet but
have gone further...

[AMRadio] Looking for a restoration project

2006-02-27 Thread Theo Bellamy
Hello

I am looking for a restoration project. Something between a Valiant and a
KW-1 (quite a range, huh?). I want to do a down to bare chassis strip and
rebuild. The ideal candidate would be a Globe King 500 or Johnson 500 but I
would be interested in other suggestions. Do you have a rusted hulk
languishing in the corner of your basement, crying out to once again make
RF?

Thanks 73,
Theo K4MO
